The Disturbing Case of Shawn Grate

Shawn Grate was a serial killer active in Ohio for over a decade. He was, disturbingly, only caught, when a woman who he had kept captive managed to make a terrifying 911 call. But that was only the beginning.

I've been a 911 dispatcher for almost 10 years and I was just holding my breath the whole time hearing this. Also, I'm fucking furious with the dispatcher because she put that girl in GREAT danger by asking her 1,000 dumb ass questions. Keep her on the line and tell her to be quiet. That's all you do after the address and what's going on.

And look, EVERY person thinks we ask too many questions and that all questions are dumb and a waste of time. So not true, but it can feel like that when you’re awaiting help. Also, it’s policy everywhere I’ve worked to ask the address, confirm it, find out what’s going on, and dispatch ASAP. Then ask more questions. Sometimes the call taker is the dispatcher but sometimes it’s a separate person. However, we are always told to tell people (when it’s true, which should be always) that help is ALREADY on the way and our questions aren’t slowing it down.

I’m no expert but after listening to so many 911 calls I’d say it’s to keep the victim on the phone and trying to get more information from them that they perhaps would have missed with another question. It keeps them on the phone while the radar is able to track the location.

Do these emergency dispatchers ever consider lowering the volume of their voice in these scenarios? Or are they told specifically that they can't? It's just...that first call, I really feel like that would easily wake people around me.

@laurenmay2098 2 года назад
That made me crazy, I would be whispering, she was so loud.
@medea27
@medea27 2 года назад
I thought the same to start with... but then it occurred to me that Jane Doe had probably turned the volume right down on the phone's speaker anyway so Grate wouldn't hear the dial tone or the person answering the call. And I'm sure Jane would have shushed the operator if she was too loud. Also, it was important for the 911 operator to communicate clearly the first time since lowering their voice might mean Jane couldn't understand what they said & she'd have to speak unnecessarily.

Here in Ohio, the abuser is always given the benefit of the doubt and the victim is treated as if she's lying about the abuse. Not long ago a woman asked for a protection order from her abusive husband. Even though there were police records of abuse in the past she was denied. Two days later she was dead because her husband killed her. The judge who denied the protection order was told to step down or be terminated. Victims are at a great disadvantage when they're labeled as nothing more than hysterical females. And of course, the abuser always denies the abuse. Innocent until proven guilty and even after guilt is proved, sometimes they're still declared innocent or the judge decides the abuse was justified so he hands down a light sentence. We need more female judges on the bench and less old farts who still believe women should be kept in their place.

The most interesting thing about Sean Grates interrogations is that he was initially interrogated by a male detective who could not get Sean to open up about anything. They then switched to a female detective and Sean opened up completely and poured his heart out, which is strange considering he literally thinks women are worth scorn. Maybe he didn't see her as a threat or maybe he's so ashamed he couldn't say what he had done to another man. Very creepy and very dark.

They've got evil evil evil on their minds, and once alone..there's no one or nothing to stop them. So fight for your life right where you are. You should listen to the whole call if you havent. Its like almost 20minutes long and frustrating! Like damn stop asking thwle same question over and over. Like "Can you open the door of the bedroom?" After Jane Doe already explained the situation very clearly. Door was barricaded and she was scared to wake him.. because it would be loud. Why ask her same question? And also the police got to the house but it seemed like they werent sure which house it was so they get to the door and then werent sure so they left and went to the house next door. Like damn! She already explained it was the yellow house on the left!!! Kick the door and get her out!

@@jenniferallen4420 Man, the call is overly frustrating. I can understand that maybe this kind of story (abductee escapes her bindings to call police on abductor's cell phone and can't get out due to door making noise) can seem far fetched, but the original full-length call made me want to shake the operator a few times listening to it. This type of situation is super rare but that doesn't mean you don't take the call seriously and watch out for the caller's safety. His speech at the end completely terrifies me. The things people like him do are absolutely horrific and the way they can act like they are sorry and that they blend in with the rest of us is horrific. I cannot and don't think I will ever understand how someone can have a mind so incredibly evil. Where does it come from? How do these people have no remorse, no empathy, no understanding at all of how supremely ugly they are and what they are doing? I don't even have words to describe how baffled I am by the psychology of someone like this. Doing it one time and being sorry theres some kind of hope there that makes you think maybe they understand and learn and wont do it again. Multiple women though not a chance. No way in hell is he sorry. If he hadn't been caught he would have killed more women no doubt about it. The way he portrays wanting to be forgived is revolting when deep down we all know he does not give a shit is just trying to replicate human emotions instead of actually feeling them.

I believe my husband was a psychopath. In old photos of him I didn’t even recognize it was him. And we have been married for five years at that time. I also discovered clothes styles he never would have worn. They are shape shifters!!!! Throughout this video this guy look like five different people, same thing with my husband. I found old drivers license of my husband. Three of them, They all had different height and eyecolor on his drivers license. I guess the DMV doesn’t question you.

Insanity this isn’t about men vs women. This is a PSA about violent men for other men or women, clearly she knows women can also be violent. Don’t get upset because she called out a gender you subscribe to. If you want to be productive, say “PSA to all men as well, although you believe she will change in her violent ways, she will not. And even if she does, don’t stick around and wait for it to happen”. Be progressive.

Lex Sao Paolo This specific case and specific comment doesn’t apply to men. This is a PSA to women because the video is in reference to a man being the abuser. Don’t make this about your need to constantly be included in the conversation when OP didn’t say anything like “remember: only men can be violet ladies, don’t feel guilty for leaving them”. I don’t understand why your need to disagree with the manner of how the person said it overwhelms you just saying “I agree!”. Considering 1 and 4 women and 1 in 9 men experience some form of violence, it’s not the craziest thing in the word to only target women (or anyone who dates a violent man) in the comments of a video where a violent man adds to the 1 in 4 statistic. Nonsensical. No one read her comment and thought “ahhh, so I guess women never abuse people”.
