On one night in the early 1980's a murder occurred so horrifying it is the inspiration for the movie, The Strangers. In rural Keddie, 3 people were brutally killed, and one missing without a trace. Still unsolved (kinda) to this day, let's look at the Keddie Cabin Murders.

The whole "arguing with the bartender" about the music and calling to complain was a deliberate move made to help the bartender recognize them to back up his alibi. He totally planned it out.

This was a community of two dozen cabins with many having lived there for over a decade. Any action (or inaction) would have severe consequences on all living residents and their families. Not being able to convict the guilty men would leave the officer’s family at deadly threat. The ones who suffered most (the surviving children) moved away from the community right after so he wouldn’t have to face their pain everyday. He did knowingly live with murderers around him and they knew where to find his family. The FBI should’ve never rested their case. Any place where a fifth of the village’s population is violently murdered shouldn’t be left to the (fully unequipped) local sheriff.

For reasons like this, I believe therapists should be able to break doctor-patient privilege. I mean we are talking about murder(s), not random drug use or petty theft. The privilege extends to the death of the patient and being that the therapist told what Mark said, you can tell it’s been eating at him all along. I highly doubt anyone would randomly confess to murder to his therapist, unless they really did it. Yes, there are people who make false confessions, but it’s to get notoriety. A patient’s therapist can’t tell anyone what was said, so there’s no reason he would falsely confess to him. Even though the therapist came forward with Mark’s confession, the police still ignored it??? Wow!!! We have all seen people tried and convicted with less evidence, but this case remains unsolved. Even his wife came forward stating she believes he did it and why she believes it. This is making it debatable as to which was worse, the killings or the investigation into the killings.

Yeah I was curious and went and looked it up. It appears to be entirely up to the Dr./therapist. I doubt anyone would stop going to them because they cooperated with a murder investigation. @@joshmattingly8056 yea, I was gonna say doctor/patient confidentiality definitely does NOT extend to covering up murders. I guarantee no doctor on earth would face any kind of backlash from giving that information to the right authorities. From one of the sources I looked up: "Exceptions to doctor-patient confidentiality under state law require doctors to share confidentiality information in certain situations based on public policy concerns. For example, doctors in Maryland are obligated to breach confidentiality to report signs of child abuse. In other states, such as New York, hospitals are legally obligated to report gunshot victims. " and "Other legal exceptions to a breach of doctor-patient confidentiality include: Medical treatment of injuries that could relate to criminal conduct (e.g., gunshot wounds, drunk driving, hit and run)." ...so yea, it isn't even just murders that wouldn't be a legal breach, it applies to many different serious crimes, as it should. A doctor shouldn't be obligated to hide a crime for anyone. Legally I'm sure there's a line drawn somewhere but that line is much lower than murder.

I was just thinking the same thing. The mental health field is still relatively young now, let alone back then, but surely they already had rules in place about coming forward with information like this. You could pay for silence in the 70s and 80s. Small towns like Keddie probably took a carton of smokes. It wasn't up until fairly recently, around Columbine times, that if a patient was admitting terrible thoughts or actions to you did you have to call it in. Still should have been taken just as seriously back then but the shrink was likely labeled as the bad guy for saying anything.

@jessieqk12

Actually it does. The police have to get a warrant to receive information and the therapist can usually only tell them what is relevant to the case. This doesn’t apply to children however. If children are involved, they must come forward and if someone’s life is currently in danger (child or adult) they must also come forward.

@@ThatChapter Just found this: Some investigators who picked up the case when it reopened in 2013 tie the slayings into an even larger plot. To Gamberg, it is clear that the DOJ and Thomas-run Sherriff’s Dept. “covered it up, is the way it sounds.” He alleges that Bo and Martin fit into a larger drug smuggling scheme which involved the federal government. Martin was a known drug dealer and Bo was connected to Chicago crime syndicates with financial interests in drug distribution. This might explain why the Sacramento DOJ sent two allegedly corrupt organized crime special agents instead of agents from the homicide department. It also provides an explanation as to why the two lead suspects were seemingly given a free pass and told to leave town by Sheriff Thomas. Furthermore, it suggests an answer as to why this case was handled so sloppily, remains unsolved and is seemingly not a priority to the Sacramento DOJ.
