The chemist poisoned by dimethyl mercury wasn't dumb. She took all the precautions required by lab safety protocols based on information available at the time. It was a tragic accident. I was a lab chemist and field engineer at the time and have had to work with organic mercury, cyanide, chlorine gas and other extremely toxic substances without proper training. This incident scared the heck out of me. I no longer work in that field.

A lava lamp takes about 2 hours to get going so I'd imagine he was trying to quicken the process. It's one of the drawbacks of the lava lamp, and I had thought of doing it, but I was afraid it might get damaged. I never thought it might damage me.

The lava lamp is no mystery at all. In fact, stupidly, I fixed my son's lava lamp by doing the same thing (years ago before I knew it was dangerous). Luckily I had better luck. When the coil in the bottom gets moved, the lava is unable to heat up and the lamp stops working. I heated it up in a double pan of water just long enough to melt the wax and get the coil to go back to the bottom. It fixed it but some of the water inside evaporated.

They're normally isn't a whole lot to say on these I just enjoyed watching stupid people get what they deserve however when it comes to the lava lamp the explanation is real simple we'll start with the fact that the kid is not educated see back in my day and yes I mean back in the seventies and eighties when you went to school and got your ass whipped when you were screwing up..., you learn things instead of the CRAP that they're teaching our kids for the last 20 years trying to program them for a society that just has idiots a bunch of mindless people that can be controlled...., lava lamps are simple you make them warm and they work so he was just trying to make it harder faster have you been taught anything in school he would have known that if you put it on a flame everything expands as it heats and it would eventually explode. But instead of that he was probably taught that at 12 years old you should be able to figure out if you're a boy or a girl well if you don't have enough brains to know that lava lamp was going to explode you sure as hell shouldn't be deciding what sex you're supposed to be
