In this video, Transition Video Magazine took a trip to, Alpha Records, hoping to learn how those lovely LPs go from little balls of plastic to turntable ready works of art.
In the end, we learned a bit about the history of vinyl, selfless dedication and faced a bit of tragedy.

What a great story, sad to hear Dick passed away, seemed like a very proud and humble man. Ive been listening to vinyl since I was about 2 or 3 years old, grandparents and parents listening to it. I still buy vinyl now and I'm nearly 26, I really hope vinyl continues to be made and sold, I couldn't imagine life without it. Great video....

A great video that brings back a lot of memories!! I am a reformed vinyl nerd and ex QC Manager of a pressing plant.My late mate ace mastering engineer Boppin' Bob Jones would accuse me of having cloth ears, but I am quite happy with the quality of CDs!! MP3 tracks though can be a bit fuzzy and lacking detail. On a purely personal note, I never liked Lened Presses - particularly the 12 " versions - the gripper arrangement was crude and often failed. Hamilton or Toolex Alpha were better IMHO

Actually, most of the old 78s were shellac, and Edison's Diamond Discs were made of a phenolic resin similar to bakelite. Vinyl really didn't come into play until the introduction of the 45rpm record in 1949, and some manufacturers used polystyrene for their records. With that in mind, over 60 years is actually true- from 1949 to 2013 is 64 years, even though PVC was invented in 1872 (but never patented until 1913).

Most people today have absolutely no idea what you talking about. Many younger people have never even heard a vinyl record. And if they have it was on some turntable someone pulled out of the basement.

How would one get into this business?
@ResilientME
@ResilientME 11 лет назад
Maybe you just need a better turntable ;) . I buy records because the digital versions of the music I like are brickwalled during mastering and sound atrocious. When I come to a well mastered album I have a difficult time deciding what format to buy it on, I voice my analog setup toward accuracy rather than warmth and I've got a good DAC. It's surprising how similar the two can sound with well recorded music.

Why do those records have such a large hole in the centre? That's way too large for the spindle.
@brynot
@brynot 8 лет назад
They are 45s. You put an adapter in the hole in order to play it on a turn table. I imagine they started doing that in order to save money by using less material?
@79frankja
@79frankja 8 лет назад
7" 45's had a bigger hole to make it easier for them to automatically load on jukeboxes.
@tomfurgas2844
@tomfurgas2844 6 лет назад
RCA Victor was the first record company to issue 7-inch 45's. They made them to be competitive with Columbia, which had recently came out with the 12-inch 33-rpm album. They made the holes big so that they would work in the specially made record players, designed to play 7-inch 45's. The record players had only a large spindle and could only play 45's with the big holes. After RCA other record companies adapted the 45 format, and maintained the large holes so that they also would play on the RCA record players.

Dying art of pressing vinyl? Vinyl sales are up 45%
@brynot
@brynot 8 лет назад
First, this video was shot 11 years ago. Second, the sales are up 45% from what? The year before? Understand that vinyl records was THE format that was used in commercial music until the CD took over in the late 1980's. So sales may be up, but they're a pittance in comparison to the hey day of vinyl records.

D. Fănel It's great that people still have an interest in vinyl. However, in comparison to when vinyl was the most popular medium in the world, it's hardly resurrected. Still, totally happy that it's not dead 15 years after this piece was made.

Take a look at this: www.statista.com/statistics/297763/vinyl-record-sales-worldwide/ Also, I want to make clear, I wasn't in any way criticizing the title you have chosen for your video which was totally accurate at the time of upload. +Carl Rudd Dead? Not by a long shot!! Paraphrased from a 2014 local TV news story (video accompanying this story is no longer available): A record pressing plant in Nashville is running 24 hours a day, 6 days a week and still can't meet the booming demand for vinyl. They are having 16 new presses custom built to go in a expansion facility. Original story at www.wsmv.com/story/25417309/united-record-pressing-adds-facility-to-keep-up-with-demand I feel sad that Dick Smith didn't get to see the resurgence of vinyl.
@carlrudd1858
@carlrudd1858 8 лет назад
Vinyl is in continual use in manufacturing. Floors, shoes, luggage. There is no resurgence of vinyl. And stop calling records vinyl. You seem unclear on a few things. For instance, tons of records were pressed from polystyrene. Vinyl is just a material. You millennials piss me off.
@d.e.bunker5311
@d.e.bunker5311 8 лет назад
+Carl Rudd Not sure of your definition of a millennial, but I doubt I qualify. I'm old, but not 1,000 years old. Vinyl is a fond term for late 20th century recordings because some form of vinyl has been used to make them for over 80 years (and still counting). So I suppose we have every right to call them vinyl.
@carlrudd1858
@carlrudd1858 8 лет назад
It's not a format, it's a material. Only some records are made of vinyl. Lots are made of polystyrene. So, call it the polystyrene 'format' haha.
