Found out that every time Ben at Crimson mentions a particular grit of sandpaper, he's referencing the Euro standard which is different from the American standard (natch). When you're mentioning grits, which standard is used in Canada? It seems I can never reliably guess when Canada is more like the US, and when it's more like the UK... 🙃
@BradAngove
@BradAngove Год назад
I generally use the “p” standard, which is the European one.
@BradAngove

They are quite similar until you get into the really high grits.

I talked to you recently about deft lacquer clear,and thought that it wouldn't act yellow. I was wrong, it does yellow, and that is nitro cellulose. You can get non yellowing
@BradAngove
@BradAngove Год назад
Are you looking for something that doesn’t yellow over time? That would be acrylic lacquer.

How many cans do you normally go through for a guitar? I’m guessing 1 primer and 2-3 colour?? And then 1-2 for top coat?
@BradAngove
@BradAngove 10 месяцев назад
1 primer, 1 colour, and usually about 2 top coat but I could see using 3.

Hey Brad, love your channel. I've got some questions for you: I'm currently painting a racing helmet with Montana Gold Acrylic spray cans. I've got some vinyl sponsor decals that are going on last. How long should I wait in between coats of clear with acrylic clear coats? And are they likely to react with a vinyl decal? As always, keep up the great content!
@BradAngove
@BradAngove Год назад
I’d give them a couple days to be safe. There shouldn’t be any issues with a reaction to the vinyl.

Brad thanks for these great videos! Question - is there a blue stain that will work on mahogany?
@BradAngove
@BradAngove Год назад
Mahogany is quite dark, so I think most blue stains won’t show up well on it. You may want to consider a gel stain or just thinning down some paint. Have you heard of unicorn spit? That product might work.
@coeurdecorbeaurecords9452
@coeurdecorbeaurecords9452 Год назад
Thanks Brad. I’ll check out the unicorn spit otherwise I’ll just do a blue burst on the top and a classic red mahogany on the back of my Les Paul build. Thanks again. Great channel and great advice!

Hi Brad, it’s me, Pat Lis again. I painted the guitar body with a glitter coat , but something went terribly wrong, there are now white dots covering the body of the guitar, unsure if I can buff them out or not. I coated with three coats of triple thick coat and wet sanded with 1000 grit, looks awful. Would send you a picture , but don’t have the option to do that so you could see and possibly provide some advice on how I can fix.

Hey Brad. How are things? Hope that you and your family are doing well. I have a strat body I need to paint. I’m going to do a Marvel Blade themed guitar in black and metallic red with some metallic chrome airbrushed elements. I have a grey primer but don’t have a grain filler. Do you need a grain filler or can you just sand it fine and give it several coats of primer? I’m going for a satin finish, not something overly glossy.
@BradAngove
@BradAngove Год назад
Depending on the wood sometimes I don’t use grain filler. If it’s open grained wood then grain filler is important, but there are several different things that can be used as grain fillers.

I have a blue Jackson that I want to paint it candy apple red. What primer should I use, how many coats and cans will I need of primer and paint will I need. Going to buy from Oxford paints.
@BradAngove
@BradAngove 5 месяцев назад
Oxford probably has a kit for that. But generally the sanding sealer, then white primer, then gold metallic, then candy red, then clear coat. 3 coats of everything up to the red. Red is until you hit your desired hue. I like 6-9 coats of clear for this type of paint.

Can you do a pearl white guitar, it’s seems to be a top secret on how to do it. They will show the guitar but not how to do it.
@BradAngove
@BradAngove Год назад
It would be the exact same except with a pearl white instead of this metallic ice blue.
@SweetTGuitars
@SweetTGuitars Год назад
Todd from Sweet T here! Not overstepping on Brad's turf here but a pearl white it best sprayed as a Tri-Stage method. A base of white and then a midcoat of pearl!! ✌️🤍
@BradAngove
@BradAngove Год назад
Thanks Todd. Would the white primer not suffice for that? With the white pearly overtop? Or would you go white primer, white ground coat, and then pearl mixed with clear for more sparkle?
@SweetTGuitars
@SweetTGuitars Год назад
@@BradAngove yeah man, I didn't think about the white primer. It would work and I'm sure you'll agree with this but the less material you can spray the better the results. Using the primer as the ground coat would absolutely work and it would keep you from having to add yet another step to the "Tri-Stage" process. I would add pearl to the first coat of clear just as you said! The only time I think that white primer wouldn't do a good job is if you were going for a different "white" like maybe a little yellower for that vintage feel or a little bluer for a pure white look. You know the deal brother. I was just adding in my 2 cents.✌️🤍

I’m considering Lake Placid Blue. Other sources tell me that LPB, being a darker metallic, is best done over a grey or silver nitro primer (which Solo doesn’t seem to sell). How important is that difference? - Paul
@paxchristi2014
@paxchristi2014 Год назад
I have painted guitars and cars. With that said a primers purpose is to fill small imperfections while being sandable. The color of the primer does not matter. Hope this helps 😊
@donculig2525
@donculig2525 Год назад
You don’t need a silver undercoat but if you want to use Inca Silver - same deal
@BradAngove
@BradAngove Год назад
Primer color can help you achieve the final color faster, and can affect its hue a little, but is otherwise not important. I don’t see why you would need grey (and certainly not silver) primer, but you could always add one coat of grey or silver nitro (not primer) before the blue to help set the base color.
