Nice video, guys. Very informative. Always get excited for a new Flip video. It’s one of the first channels I started following when I started tanks last year. Never had big issues with them. Credit where credit is due. Thank you very much for everything you have shared, Rob. It helped me out a lot!

I put plants in my daphnia tank and a sponge filter on low settings. That way, i dont really have to worry about water changes. I have the daphnia for about a month and haven't had any issues.

Great video! I have killed a few cultures that I bought from Carolina Scientific. You make it sound easy. I did the aged water, tried spring water, etc., but I kept failing. I think I'll try again, thanks to your video!

Definitely give it a try with ours. They are very hardy. I hope you have a ton of success.

The major point in all of this is FEEDING THE DAPHNIA. No one ever really shows how cloudy the water should be. It's very frustrating.

At the 8:15 mark, you say to use 1 tablespoon of the mix in RO water but didn't mention how much RO water to mix it with, and what volume of tanks this will be used for. Eg 1 tablespoon of mix in 1 litre of water with this then spread out over 60 litres of cultures. Hope that makes sense. I've only got a small starter culture so I don't want to put a "too strong" mix into my smaller tanks. Currently have my starter culture spread across a couple of glass jars til I grow enough to start using tanks.

Rob...Great Video. I have one question. You metioned no Filtration, and gave two reasons. One was self explanatory, in that the Daphnia would get sucked into the filter, but the other left me curious. You said the flow would bother them as well. Does that mean that a straight water mover (a.k.a. Wavemaker) is also inappropriate for a setup like this?

How do I start a Daphnia colony in 1st place?
@LupDiesel
@LupDiesel Год назад
A container like the black ones we use in the video, aged tap water, a little crushed coral to hold the pH stable and then an air stone. Add daphnia and feed some dry yeast and you're good to go :)

Daphnia are a great food which I utilize. They are so cool to watch as they swim. One tip I found is not to keep them with scuds because they will get eaten.
@LupDiesel
@LupDiesel Год назад
Good tip! I agree 100% . They are great and fun to watch. I call them my kids to the employees lol I made it my goal to really get them breeding and doing well.

I'm not sure of the type. It may be but they don't get huge so I'm not 100% sure

I tried a 60 litre (~ 15 Gal) tank half filled with tank water (so no ammonia or nitrite, low levels of nitrate) and using Spirulina/yeast powder but my starter sample (750ml/25 Fl Oz jar) seemed to lose them each day to the point where I could barely find any. Tank was outside under an awning that would get ambient light but only direct light for about an hour. Should I move it where it will be in more direct light for most of the day where I know the water will become green? I know you suggested light 24/7 to really maximize breeding but due to electricity costs, would be happier with just using daylight. I know breeding will not be as quick but as long as I don't keep losing them, I'd be happy. Thanks

Where did you get them from? If you got them from us, send us an email and we can share our food formula with you because that is probably the limiting factor!

Has anyone created a frozen food that combines the vitamins and health needs in our pellets and flakes with brine or krilll or daphnia that make our fish go crazy? I guess I could resort to using the coffee bean grinder and just mashing it all up togeather into a daily frozen food? It gets taunting keeping their needs straight🤣- AM you get Northfin Cichlid Algae pellets, Northfin Cichlid color pellets and flakes. PMs you get Bug Bites tropical granules and bug bites cichlid formula and flakes. Except then every 5th feeding you get frozen spirulina Brine Shrimp and Daphnia. Then every 10th feeding you get frozen tubifex worms and krill Am I missing anything they need 🤣🤣

I just raise scuds , feed flare food to the scuds , feed the scuds to the fish...

There are a few good brands out there for frozen foods and mixes. It's been a while since I've bought frozen foods but I know Rods was a brand that specialized in mixes.
