MrChay could be in a bit of trouble if the cables in his animated lift were to snap! For this reason, every lift (or elevator!) has a SAFETY BRAKE!
But how does it work?

Thank you for this video. My preschooler was distraught about the time we'll spend in elevators on vacation, and getting a glimpse behind the scenes helped a lot.

I'm really glad that my video helped someone and thank you very much to take the time to tell me about it. A box dangling in an open lift shaft used to scare me as a kid. I would avoid getting into any lift as a kid, especially the old types that used to look like a metal coffin as the doors opened, example here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-nK6NY9CCnh4.html - but even this one isn't original and is very smooth and quiet compared with other lifts from the 60s/70s. - used to scare the hell out of me! Luckily lifts these days are much better looking.

Interestingly modern lifts are also required to have protections for if a lift were to overspeed in the upwards direction, or if the lift were to move unintentionally

Many of the older elevators have a flyball governor, just like those on the early steam engines. Two metal balls are held by brackets to a rod that rotates when the car is moving. If that car speeds up beyond a certain point, the balls would lift up by centrifugal force, bringing up a collar that first operates a switch to shut the motor off, and second, could mechanically tightens the cable, pulling on the car brakes, stopping the car.

I was looking up about this lift accident that happened 3 years ago in a hotel lift in Killarney, Co.Kerry, where the lift fell down three floors and injured 5 people. I thought if the lift was in trouble it would freefall up to the top floor and hit the roof. The article is called 'Company fined 750,000 euro over Killarney hotel lift that fell three floors'.

I live in a high rise block and recently saw the lift engineers carrying out some maintenance work on one of the lifts, I says am sure you get asked this all the time but what stops you if the cable snaps he laughs and says sarcastically, the ground!! But then says if it was that easy to kill people we wouldn't be in business, you're safer riding in a lift than being in a car on the road.

I personally think the frame wasn't "poorly built" hahahaha but more that the lift engineer did test this in a very bad way. The lift seems to be pretty new, and there should be a test button in the service panel to test the brakes without actually applying them fully. I mean, the frame was not designed to handle the load of the lift car AND the counterweight AND the motor working against it because brakes were applied. Guess that lift engineer was new on this lift and didn't get instructions of "NEVER test the brakes on this lift by impeding the brake cable. ONLY test by designated test button". IF a real fault happened that would mandate brake application, then the frame would of course crash too, but then its "worth it" to save lifes. This is EXACTLY why you should NEVER play or use a emergency stop if there is not a emergency. Because things can fail or break during a emergency stop, as opposed to a controlled stop.

Can we put enough magnets on a elevator and put a layer of copper around the elevator shaft it to slow it down if it fails? Make the magnets deploy if it fails or you pull a switch. cost to much
@Bombiedude.
@Bombiedude. Год назад
Fun and true theorised fact: the ropes breaking on an elevator/lift cant really happen because these were designed for a long time so that if every square inch of the cab is filled the ropes wont break and also on an elevator/lift if the brakes were to fail and it goes into freefall it wont free fall down it will actually freefall upwards because the counterweight is actually heavier than the cab
@germff
@germff 4 года назад
Are you sure about the rope being attached to the counterweight? As far as I've seen it, it always is attached to the underside of the car, via another pulley in at the bottom of the shaft.
@abpsd73
@abpsd73 4 года назад
If the other end of the brake cable was attached to the bottom of the lift car, it would never achieve tension to activate the brake if the main cables were to fail.
@mrmattandmrchay

Yes, the system you are referring to is a continuous loop. This video focuses on the simple design from older lifts.

Take a nap and wait. There is nothing that can be done from inside the elevator and should never be done by untrained personnel
@murrfeeling
@murrfeeling 2 года назад
The space between floors is typically smaller than the height of the elevator door. You can force the door open from the outside and send down a small ladder, then the passengers can exit through the crawl space between the top of the elevator door and the upper floor. In cases where there are very wide spaces between elevator doors, such as offices with severe drop ceilings there's almost always hatch that can be accessed from the top of the elevator.

the main cables will usually never fail. Would be nice if you said that in the video too. Chances of all cables snapping are pretty much none. A two way governer is a good thing, seen as if the brakes on a lift would fail, the lift would plummit to the top of the shaft, seen as the counterweight is heavier than the lift. This will prefent the lift from hitting the roof.

its safety gear matt not safety break, also an over speed govenor does other jobs for instance, a lift has what you call a contract speed, this mostly is .8 mtrs sec, on the osg there is a electrical contact wich is set to trip before the osg locks in, the purpouse of this is that if the drive fails and the lift is out of control on the way up the switch wiil activate cutting the power to the controller and activating the brake, also if you see on some osg they have a smaller pulley, this is for testing the osg, you drop the rope from the top pulley to the lower one and set the lift in a downword direction, the osg will travel faster and pull the safety gear in...... tony
@tonybaines3332

also most safety gears are egg shaped dogs with teeth that bite into the guides.

🙋‍♂️🛗 Thanks for the video but I have a question. *Question: What happens if the Overspeed Governor’s cable breaks before or at the same time as the main cables, does the brake engage and how?* I know it’s extremely unlikely but I figure it could happen.
@mrmattandmrchay
@mrmattandmrchay 3 года назад
This has happened in the past - I give you 9/11. Apparently some cars did plummet when the main ropes and governor cables were severed at the same time. So, you'd have thought that the car brakes would be 'held off' and they apply if the rope were to go slack or, as you suggest, are cut. But it's the other way around. The only other thing I can think of, is a rope grabber in the motor room which is rare, but useless if the main ropes were to brake. I guess that the scenario is so remote that it was classed as 'very improbable' and therefore nothing exists for it. Maybe someone else can provide a different response?
