The End For QD OLED - TVs and Monitors in 2025
According to a recent article from OLED-Info the future of QD OLED may not be what we expected. Between challenges finding buyers, large expenses, and other issues, will QD OLED fall to the wayside in 2025 and beyond in favor of other OLED technologies and Mini LED, or can Samsung step up to the plate and solve these problems before it's too late?

1. You're right that Samsung Electronics never believed in QD-Oled and considers Microled the true successor of LCD. 2. Samsung Display will not go back to LCD miniled production they sold their patents and manufacturing to TCL CSOT. 3. If QD Oled is not seen as competitive in the tv and monitor space Samsung Display will probably speed up development on QD-Oled's successor QNED(Quantum Nanorod Emitting Diode not to be confused with LG Electronics' LCD branding).

i just got my 32inch QD-Oled Monitor from MSI wich is the only one that is somewhat available in Europe at the moment and i have to say i am very happy with it. Colors response times, just the usual quality of an Oled! As someone who only had WOLED so far i must say that the amount of light the QD Oled absorbs is quite irritating. as soon as their is the slightest bit of daylight (not talking about reflections, just ambient light) in the room the entire display looks grey. It is not a dealbreaker for me but its definitely a lot more annoying then i thought because it takes away that inky black look i am used to on my WOLED.

At least for the money I paid for it, here in the Netherlands (price at release was 4400 euro, when it went to 4K a few monts later, I made a deal for a huge discount of 700 off it, as well.), I got what I expected... the best TV A95K at that year. I game a lot and long at nights on a console. No issues there. On the LG C2, I do a pixel refresh or how you wanna call it from time to time, just to be sure. QD Oled for PC use .... I have the Asus on my shortlist, but as a add-on to my normal 32 inch LED monitor. Why throw a monitor away, if I can use it then for displaying the browser, and other stuff I have on screen all the time. PC and OLED, you need to be careful. I just wanna point out that your first point (that Samsung Electronics buying LG WOLED displays means they don’t believe in QD-OLED) is in disagreement with an analysis from Linus on LMG Clips that I just watched. Linus’ take was that Samsung Electronics (different from Samsung Display) was buying WOLEDs from LG Display because they’re cheaper than QD-OLED and they felt that this might put pressure on Samsung Display to drive down the cost of QD-OLED, which would be a win/win for Samsung Electronics. I’m curious what you think of this take.
@hugevibez
@hugevibez 2 месяца назад
It should be noted that Samsung Electronics and Display have been in a large disagreement for some time now. Samsung Display is the result of the S-LCD joint-venture between Sony and Samsung, which Samsung bought in 2012. Around the same time, Samsung Electronics adapted the AMOLED technology from what was then their Mobile Display division to the large screen with little success (low yield), this led them to abandon the technology quickly, but Samsung Display continued development. LG found great succes with their WOLED tech, and was quick to adapt it and Samsung Electonics began smearing the OLED name with their QLED branding, which led to a large chasm between Electronics and Display as Display was already all-in on the development of AMOLED tech. Electronics then started developing mini-LED on it's own (this is now handled by Samsung Semiconductor), potentially because it doesn't share the same belief in the future of this technology as Display does. Samsung Electronics doesn't use the QD-OLED branding on any of it's TVs. There are still a lot of issues and increased complexity with QD-OLED tech that is keeping the price high. QD-OLED uses blue OLEDs, which are notorious for their lower efficiency than other OLED compounds. To make any sort of brightness happen they have to stack multiple layers together. This is not a solved issue even then as you can see in RTings their OLED burn-in tests that QD-OLED does do a lot worse when it comes to burning in compared to WOLED. I don't think it's some sort of tactical move to drive down the cost of QD-OLED, as that's simply not possible in the current state despite moving to inkjet. A higher efficiency emitter was supposed to come out, but it's been postponed in to Q2 2025. Sony abandoning QD OLED before, and a lack of other TV manufacturers jumping in on the technology might indicate that that lack of belief might not be unfounded and there could be some serious reliability issues later on.

Especially since the monitor side right now is seeing resounding success. All of the technical issues are already being solved soon. Samsung Display sold to Sony at huge price , Samsung TVs dumped them on the market . No trust for a 3rd party- I mean 77" QD-OLED for USD 1900 in the States . I read this story a few days ago . Yes workers went to other projects . But they will keep production , probably improve yields etc and tweak. Also probably in a holding pattern, waiting Blue Pho-LED . Apparently both Samsung and LG promising 4000Nits on display side ( not on TVS ) . This is because they want to stack 4 layers. So depends what workers , developers/scientists or project/manufacturing. Maybe some went to develop their own MLA , Samsung likes to copy. So TVs will continue , probably most boost will be in the Monitor space , Samsung needs to up sizes to compete with LG in 42" to 48" , though more 36" needed . Same for MLA+ LG Display probably sells 65" for OK price , but big price for 77" and 83" Yields is everything the Japan Oled consortium struggled for years . TSMC is the best at getting yields with things that take 300 steps plus . Every step needs to be like 99.9% successful and that would only give 74% success rate ie .999 to power of 300 Given that things that were incredibly hard 30 years ago , 2 bit companies can do easy now with right tools

I think QDEL will overtake both types of OLED As long as there isnt some major flaw they arent talking about QDEL is -Single layer(supposedly) with the light and color being created on the same layer -CHEAP AF being able to use existing LCD manufacturing lines with very little modofication(no need to have a vacuum sealed production line, high heat, or special gasses, the real reason i think it will take over is cost, imagine a 25 inch 1440p240hz QDEL thats only $300 and has color/contrast just as good as QD-OLED) -(Possibly) easy to create a pixel layout that follows the standard LCD to help with the annoying fringing around text.

They'd have had my business with their 27" monitor already if the coating on that one wasn't so egregious. Pricing is good on some models, but Samsung QD-OLED monitors just can't get it together with their availability. QD-OLED colors are better but not everyone can live with that magenta tint. I do think in general the tech will be short-lived. I don't know what it is but my eyes agree more with W-OLED in terms of eye strain and comfort.

I'm just sitting here wondering why the old and flawed Neo G7 and G8 are still the best 4K HDR LCD monitors, and Samsung won't seize their lead in this category and release an updated version that fixes their issues. OLED is cool and all, but for as long as it won't reach over 400 nits in most scenarios and suffers from burn-in, mini-LEDs will have a purpose. They shouldn't be completely abandoned in the OLED gold rush.

The fact that Samsung Electronics is purchasing panels from LG Display is just as much geopolitical as it is pragmatic for both entities. Just this year Samsung Electronics is punishing BOE by not purchasing their ADS Pro panels due to some trade secret infringement. LG Display is facing tough times as they have the capability to ramp up production of OLED panels but LG Electronics is not a sufficient seller in the space to sell enough units for their production. So in comes the highest volume player in TVs, Samsung Electronics to buy panels from LG Display to get their production plants to where they need to be to turn a profit. Also for Samsung Electronics, buying panels from their South Korean competitor is better than getting increasingly priced gouged by the Chinese panel makers especially in light of the trade secret fiasco. Your opinion on the S95D, which is purely based on the panel coating is also not evidence of Samsung Electronics nerfing QD OLED. The S95D has been independently measured at 1700-1800 nits 10% window sustained and 2100 nits 2% window. If you’ve been keeping tabs in the first 3 years of the technology, the flagship product implementing it has had a 40% improvement year over year. If anything the anti glare coating is a move to popularize QD OLED displays to a wider audience. Multiple reviewers have stated that the finish on the S95D is also not cheap and plasticky looking like most matte coatings, but its own new implementation that still looks ultra premium. If anything, QD OLED is so good and relatively cheaper to manufacture that it may have stalled the production of other future display tech like micro LED, QDEL etc. from getting into the mainstream consumer space for a decade. Your channel is also dedicated to reviewing about products from 5 or 6 partners of Samsung Display in the monitor space, so manufacturers are buying QD OLED. Also the Sony A95L is fairly widely known to be a 2 Year carryover so the panels are being bought but they’re going into a 2023 model which is why you don’t see QD OLED tech in the 2024 lineup although it will be sold concurrently with it and remain the flagship along with their new Mini LED model. As mentioned above LG Electronics has enough supply of OLED panels and pressure to sell them from their display arm that they cannot purchase from Samsung display even if their wanted to. If you’re looking to be an objective reviewer and a serious player in the testing and recommendation space, you have to start checking more of your biases at the door and accept there are more reasons that companies make decisions that are not driven by absolute performance or to please enthusiasts. Ultimately you gain consumers by making the best product but you cease to exists if you don’t make money on it. All your points in this video I think were invalid in proving your click baity title. You can do better.

Not saying that your 2025 predictions are incorrect but some of your evidence is. While yes there is the original sense of a panel lottery in place(i.e. whether or not Samsung Electronics actually may not give you the panel you were aiming for, which is a at least 2 decades old of a practice), where Samsung Electronics may use WOLED panels from LG Display, not just Sony is using that panel tech in 2024. I wouldn't call that supporting evidence. The Samsung S95D *is* using the latest QD-OLED panel at least for some sizes. There will be plenty of S90D as well that are using last years generation of QD-OLED. Also, the A95K from Sony is a 2022 model. The A95L is a 2023 model and is expected to carry over for all of 2024, or least until summer. That also uses QD-OLED from Samsung Display and are still very much in production. Sony has not abandoned QD-OLED for this year. And now there are other branded computer monitors based on QD-OLED that have an improved subpixel layout for text. Koren Samsung Display wants to make QD-OLED because they are no longer interested in LCD which is dominated by Chinese panel makers that can use cheaper labor to make profit. Samsung Electronic has been reluctant to adopt QD-OLED because they spent a decade attacking LG OLED for burn-in. They have to slowly reverse their marketing.

Only thing QD is superior on now is their colour saturation, other manufacturers have caught up with the brightness and surpassed it, they figure the colour saturation, QD won't be that special anymore.

I dont see QD-OLED going anywhere. Samsung doesn't just develop new technology like this for funsies. I think they will continue to refine the tech, and once more of its flaws are sorted out it will be the only choice for panel makers When a casual sees both side by side, the wow factor comes from QD-OLED colors, not from black levels. With some optimization of lighting conditions you get both.

You are working on a false assumption. Samsung can still have QD OLED even using OLED panels manufactured by LG. QD OLED has a blue pixel emissive layer and a QD color conversion layer for the red and green pixels. For a large enough customer like Samsung a company like LG used to manufacturing panels for other companies would definitely be willing to make a custom line of blue pixel only panels for Samsung to integrate with their QD color conversion layer tech. Given rumors abound that Samsung are having problems integrating the more efficient, longer life blue PHOLED tech that was recently announced it is possible that Samsung are going to just buy this part from LG in the interim.
@mnomadvfx

Another possibility is that Samsung are close to breaking ground on blue nanorod LED tech again.

Samsung doesn’t have a qd oled problem it has a marketing problem. It’s hard to compete when every reviewer downplays all lg flaws and over exaggerates Samsung and Sony flaws. LG has the influencers all in their pocket. No other explanation for the c3 outselling the s90c. Performance isn’t even in the same realm yet lg sales are sky high because of the influencers.

Monitor is a god damn niche and qd oled here are selling rly well they cant risk to sell us future downgrade as we will automatically see it and they wont make any profit.. I had the MSI 27" QD-OLED monitor and it's awesome. There are no problems with it, aberrations, text etc. I replaced it with an LG 240Hz LCD over durability concerns, nothing else. I'm a very intense user. I do want mini and micro LED over anything else. I'm replacing my old Samsung plasma TV with a Sony LCD. If Sony made a 55" microLED model that would be perfect. I think QD-OLED is here to stay and evolve. S90C TVs are flying off the shelves in every BB in my area according to the salesmen I've talked to. They'll get more sales to other vendors as their own sales results increase. The problem seems to be why they're buying WOLED panels from LG, production issues? That's the real question. I love QD-OLED, it's the only OLED I'd buy for a TV. Just prefer being able to use my TV in a living room upstairs with the windows open so I'm more interested in microLED. But you aren't going to beat the S89C for a basement setup.

Samsung Display QD-OLED for TV's have 2 huge problems because they only sell from 2 TV manufacturer's. Samsung Electronics (problem 1): Lack of QC, shoddy build quality (s89 in particular but s90 too), only 1 year limited warranty which doesn't include burn-in and even when it qualifies they try to weasel out of. Firmware updates nerfing performance. Basically the Samsung disease that is Samsung. Sony (problem 2): Sony makes excellent products but because Samsung Display is overcharging for the panel they are priced completely out of their class. When factoring sales outlets, literally twice as much as their competition. Sony has officially abandoned qd-oled panel technology going forward (most likely due to this) and has said they are going with mini-led for 4k nits and to regather profit margins. Meanwhile the LG G4 has now already eclipsed the only 6 month old A95L. Sony also plans to sell a WOLED panel later this year to fill their market niche for these consumers. This is essentially the death nail for qd-oled tech in the high end television markets.
