Thaddeus, nice treatment by Chaka of this song. She is a very talented singer. However, to say that this is the "definitive version" is indeed a stretch!

​@@enjoy7024I don't think it's a stretch whatsoever. Her cover version of "My Funny Valentine" is also probably the definitive version although more R&B oriented. From all the cover versions that exist hers is the most accurate regarding the melody and what is supposed to be taken out of the song.

Nora Johnson, you cant compare Julie London to Chaka Khan, Chaka Version sound much better than Julie London, Billy Holiday and all the other I have seen trying to sang this song, Chaka did an amazing at singing this song.

London's version is the sterile and monotone version

This woman can sing any song. She is never trying to do a song better. She is doing it in her own style. She doesn't compete that's why she is such a good singer.

Julie London's version is wonderful. I can certainly see why you enjoy it.

WOW!! Why don't you tell us how you really feel? I was so caught off guard by your comment that I had to play this clip over again to see if I could hear any of the things that you complain about here. Upon further review, I find NOTHING of what you're talking about in this performance. I know that music criticism is purely subjective. But things like inappropriate pitch isn't a subjective matter. Either the pitch is correct, or it isn't. I heard nothing here that warranted your response.

@@beeshor1 open your ears - she sings lot of the notes really wrong - out of tune. Makes me earcancer. Compare it to the studio version. Worlds between... I do love Chaka Kahn, but never heard such a bad Version.. A furthermore answer I just think about now is, that she took the lyrics literally (so I drink...)

I mean you nailed the song and I'm sure that "Lady Day" herself would be beaming with happiness at your attempt. Okay now that I've gotten that bullchit out the way, ROFKMSL! From the way you attacked Chaka Khan's performance you'd have to be Pavarotti himself in reincarnation. How much money did you make or alcolades did you receive when you placed your recorded version of this song on your ALBUM/CD/MP3? I imagine not a got-damned penny since no one has ever heard of you. I'm more than sure that Ms. Khan sounds better than you after she has awaken in the middle of the night to take a well deserved chit. It is always you people that spent 20 minutes in a music appreciation class where you've barely learn the correct musical term for sheet music! If you watched any live performance and didn't like how the artist interpreted the lyrics to any song just refrain from viewing it and move on with your life. But don't sit anywhere and attempt to rip them to shreds on social media as if you can or could do any better.
