When referencing the cultural harm of polygamy I am meaning the history of polygamy in Utah under sects of the Mormon church, of course poly relationships in general are not all harmful nor do they have the same harmful cultural history and connotations as polygamy within the Mormon church has had. I have personal experience as a polyamourous woman in a healthy relationship where me and my partner have lost friends due to misconceptions about our private lives. The assumption being that we couldnt possibly work through insecurities through communication and mutual respect. I have people thinking one of us must be abused in the relationships because there is no positive accurate representation of healthy polyamory

I actually have cousins who are mormon and old school ones too....the only one who isnt old school is 1 or the 16 kids who decided to go to BYU in Utah and get married to a so called regular guy and have 1 kid. All my other 15 cousins are married and have tons and tons of kids. Some of them are very into the mormon thing. We all live here in California and it's really interesting. Our family is just Catholic and Christian, so it was strange when my uncle married someone who was mormon and wanted tons of kids. They had tons of rules. I also remember something about the wedding were some of us couldnt be in the chruch because we werent mormon. Which I thought was horrible. Even my uncle the father couldn't go in this certain church because he wasn't baptized yet. So it's pretty interesting.

I've seen many women state that they'd like to be in a polygamous relationship and have sister wives because "it'd be nice to have help around the house" and I hate that because there's the implication that their partner is not helping. This is not giving you freedom. It's simply dividing the workload of the housework which you have no choice but do because it's your only job and place as a woman. Need to watch that episode again. Christine didn't come home and run her to the ER. She came home and said she waited, 5 days. Idk 5 days since she came home? Or 5 days since the symptoms started. Meri apologizing to Robyn for wanting to go back to school just blew my mind. Why on earth would she feel like she had to apologize for wanting to better herself? That makes me so sad for her I never watched the show, I just kind of stumbled upon a video about them one day and went down a rabbit hole. I have a decent idea of what is happening at this point though.
I'm not positive because I haven't watched the show, just several videos on the people involved, but I think it was because they split the housework and childcare, so if she was busy with school, it'd mean the other women would have to take care of the extra work. But again, that's just a guess.

No one really wanted to do it but they gave it the ol college try because Kody made a big fuss about supporting *Robyn's Dream*. After a while Meri was the only one really still supporting Robyn and her dream, which is why it was so "devastating" for Sobbin Robyn. She was losing the last person supporting her dream, which at this point had gone from being a boutique to being "high-end" jewelry, designed by Robyn. The fact that his daughter asked for him after she went through surgery and he wasn't there really broke my heart. My dad had COPD and cancer and when I had to go in for surgery at he couldn't make it because he had to be on an oxygen tank. My dad apparently called my mom constantly asking for updates when I got out of surgery and was waking up I did ask for him. And my mom was like well he's not here. But he's on the phone here and my dad talked to me he asked how I was you know I went home to my parents house after my surgery he doted on me as much as he could being so sick. I look at Cody and I see a man who could be there for his kids who could love his kids. Who has the ability to do the things that my dad who had cancer and COPD didn't and yet still my Dad tried more than this man my dad was dying of an illness and he actually made efforts for me.

Polygamy is a religious tenet of fundamentalist Mormans and is inherently abusive to women and children in so many ways-- physical, se×ual, psychological, financial. This show has shown us why it is always a disaster for the women and children.

Polygamy tends to use religion to justify plural marriage and the plural is always the man with multiple wives and usually in financial control. This show likely gave these women a way out because they had followings and fans that likely built them up and made them realize their was another way of life. Otherwise they would have been to indoctrinated and trapped to even think they could have anything else. Polyamory exist in many forms, but the biggest difference is it is about consent and not justified by religion and closed communities. Also either gender can have more then one partner or they all have a shared all inclusive relationship. But there is no 'ok for one gender, not okay for the other.'
In the opening hearing Kody rang about all the "sacrifices" he made for the first 3 wives. It seems that the wives made all the sacrifices. Instead of dividing his time by 3 after Robyn it was divided by 4. That is until Robyn became his main focus. If Kody and Robyn hadn't ignored Meri after the divorce she wouldn't have been vulnerable to being catfished.
What bothers me is that polygamy is always seen as a man having multiple wives, and never as a woman having multiple husbands. It's not about community or companionship, it's about wanting a harem
For procreation reasons multiple wives to 1 husband works....the husband can have multiple wives pre%nant at the same time. A woman can only be pregnant by 1 man and a time, and it would be a longer time between each child. I think that's why the Bible talks of the one husband version of polygamy. Women seem more willing to share 1 man(not me, I'm not ok with it) men by nature are territorial, and even though wives are not property...they do feel ownership/responsible over their wives and children.

You want to look up polyamory representation, there are a lot of people living that lifestyle ethically and sharing their stories on the internet, it’s everywhere. A woman having multiple husbands is polyandry, not polygamy, and is less common because most societies are patriarchal and view women as property. If you don’t like that polygamy always turns out abusive and unethical, what you REALLY have a problem with is misogyny in society.

Polygamy is commonly used synonymously with polygyny because polygyny is the most common form of polygamy, but they are technically different.
For many communities like this, they don't have a lot of exposure to how things are outside of their immediate communities (who typically also practice the same dynamics), so they don't realize how bad things are until they get that exposure. That's one of the reasons why cults and abusers isolate their victims. So it's very well possible that seeing how other people reacted to their family opened their eyes to how poorly they were being treated. Polyamory and polygamy can both be dynamics that work very well for people, but clearly this particular family had a lot of serious issues that hurt those involved. I'm glad they broke away and that the children seem to be doing okay.

@Haden Blake when I had the surgery it was very scary, because it can very easily go wrong. However, usually if the curvature of the spine is so bad to where surgery is required, it's usually because without the surgery they'll have worse problems. For example, around a 90⁰ curvature is where you start to have breathing issues and lungs collapse. I was around 82⁰ before my surgery. You can be cautious and apprehensive but you have to remember it's about what's best for your kid, not what makes you comfortable. The pain she was in was probably unreal. Even after surgery, in the winter I still get sporadic spinal pain.
If a relationship requires a person to submit to a imbalance of power, then it is toxic. No one deserves that or should expect that... regardless of a religion or culture.

He has absolutely no self awareness & I’m right there with Cruel in wondering not just how long it took for his partners to recognize & flee his toxicity (particularly when his nature was obviously detrimental to their children), but also astounded at how such a blatantly narcissistic, immature & frankly S-Rank Mediocre of a man was even able to charm so many women into marrying him. Honestly, I don’t doubt that 95% of the reason is just that their own uprising & indoctrination into polygamy its justifying religion resulted in them being primed to commit to Kody for his religious identity over his actual personality. As someone who grew up Baptist, I’ve seen so many people from the clergy to church leaders pitch themselves headlong into full commitment to a spouse only to divorce later if they were lucky simply because their relationship was solely built on sharing a religion above nearly every other attributes.
Plus they have a tendency to marry incredibly young, and most people just don't stay the exact same person from ages 17-30. They marry before they ever have a chance to live alone or really get to know their own wants and desires, so they have no choice but to adhere to whatever values they were raised with, or to divorce, which is often met with de-fellowship and shunning from family and community.
I watched this almost a year after you posted it. It is still relevant. What a family. I just hope Christine doesn’t let the show ruin her marriage to David.
Personally, my theory is that Robin fell in love with Cody and then realized later that he had multiple wives. Compared to the other sister wives she seemed like she wanted to be the only wife. This would show why the other three were a little hesitant, because they were a team. Robin wanted a partnership not a team.
They met in their church, though, and Robyn was introduced to Kody by Meri-his first wife. She met Kody knowing he had multiple wives, and it was in a polygamous setting. She also grew up in a polygamous family and married her first husband with the intent to have sister wives, and when he didn’t take other wives after her like planned, it was an added issue in their marriage.
Oh no in my opinion, Robyn wanted the other wives around, she just wanted to be the main wife. Kinda like an Empress and the lower concubines. From clips I’ve seen it’s always the other wives supporting the family while Kody and Robyn seem to focus on each other.
Robin knew from the get go how many wives he had and knew about the show. She set out to worm her way in anderi helped. Meri is the one that set it up.
Unpopular Opinion: I think that the Browns were having problems way before Robin entered the picture. They (and TLC and the Sister Wives producers) were just covering the problems up better. BTW, I think that Cody Brown is a pathetic excuse for a human being. That part of the clip where he says he feels like he's been stabbed in the kidneys really bothered me because in October 2004 I went into a 10 day coma due to kidney failure. When it comes to kidneys Cody Brown has no idea what the hell he's talking about.
Robyn was in her element when she became the legal wife ,I mean who didn't understand this,she's wise when it comes to getting what she wants and she holds all the cards,. If she has to breakup with Kody she can now go after property and cash she knew all along what Ace cards she needs
As someone who has lived in Utah my whole life and raised in that church, I can confirm it's 100% a cult. When I finally woke up and left, I have never felt so happy and free. However it still breaks my heart seeing my family still fully involved. It's such a shame how brainwashed these poor people are
I was gonna say the same thing. I already did a spit take when Cruel mentioned they had 18 kids but then to find out that Mary came from a family of 25 siblings blew my already shattered mind. All 4 wives gained weight while married to him. They ate their feelings. Meri, Janelle and Christine have all lost weight and look more relaxed. I'm so happy for Christine that she found a man who truly loves her and wants to make her happy. He even accepts that Janelle is important to her and will be around and involved. The part where one of the wives was talking about how their daughter had back surgery and after was asking for her dad, who wasn't there, just shattered me. I am CRYING. I didn't have the best relationship growing up with my own dad but, if I ever was hurt or sick and ask for my dad, he was RIGHT THERE. No matter how awful of a teen I was, he was there. As an adult now, we have the best relationship so I just can't fathom or ever imagine how she must've felt, already in so much pain, and having to hear that her father isn't there everytime she asked for him. 😥

I had knee surgery as a teen and I still remember when I was coming out of anesthesia, before I could even talk, I was trying to say “where’s my dad?” I had spine surgery at 27 and the thought of going through _that_ as a kid (SO much worse than any other surgery I’ve had) and having that same feeling of wanting my dad and him not being there, breaks my heart. It also breaks my heart thinking of being Christine and having to tell her daughter over and over again that her daddy’s not there. I’d be torn between heartbreak and fury.

i ended up in the hospital when i was 17 due to an injury during school hours, needed over a hundred stitches... a school admin came with me in the ambulance, staying with me the whole time i was in the hospital, but when i asked where my mother was, the admin said she wasn't coming (she didn't work or anything, just didn't want to drive out; instead i found out she was furious i took an ambulance when i got home lol). i say that because (even tho i couldn't imagine being in the daughter's position where it's such an intense surgery) i can personally tell you that having a parent abandon you when you're scared and in a lot of pain - yeah, it changes the way you view them as a person, tbh.

And blames Covid. Ugh. I was pregnant with my first baby in 2020. My 80-year-old mother came to see me and allowed me to visit her even though we lived states away. I asked her if she was sure she wanted to take the risk. She said "If I die because I spent time with my pregnant daughter, that's a good way to go. I would rather die spending time with my loved ones than live a lonely life in my apartment." And she never got sick, not once and is still kicking today! Kody is just a loser. I would crawl over broken glass to get to my child especially if he needed me.

I love my mum very much, and I missed her and my family - but I absolutely could not, would not, take the risk of giving her or them COVID. So I sat on my own in my damp, cold apartment, no Christmas decorations or Christmas dinner, sick and alone - but I'd do it again, a thousand times over, rather than risk giving mum, or dad, or my family, such a potentially fatal illness.
My two cents? It fell apart because Kody got too old to keep up with adding a fourth wife. Robin hadn't been in the established routine, being younger she would have naturally wanted more time and opportunities than the others, and Kody probably just didn't have the energy to split time evenly between them so he invested what he had in the "newer model" expecting the others to just put up with it. I honestly don't think he ever expected them to divorce him. Which is why when they started voicing complaints and peeling away, he took it like an insecure little brat. "Yeah? Well, I was never actually that into you anyway!" He started to push them out himself instead of coming to grips with the reality that HE was failing his end of the bargin. It's going to be really interesting to see how things go for him from here. He's coasted this long with never having to be the mature one in the room, but now his wives have left, his kids don't seem to like him, and the only wife he has left didn't actually sign up for dealing with him without buffers. Would this all have been worth it if, after so many years, it leaves him with so little to show for it?
“Buffers” is a GREAT way to put it. I really think Robin saw Meri Janelle, and Christine as “buffers” for her own marriage and emotional support sisters rather than complex women with their own needs and lives. That’s why she always talked about being “betrayed” by their desire to move and grow.
It made me really hate Kody watching this show. He did, in many ways, abuse his wives and some if not all of his children. None of them deserved what he did to them and I am glad to see three of them got out of that situation. Mormonism in itself is (by definition) a cult. Though it may be an anger to some people, that is the truth. Christine making it out of her situation with both was great to see.
I think when someone did the BITE test it got like, 75% out of 100. That's only slightly better than what the Jehovah's Witnesses got and they're 110% a cult.
As a polyamorous person, stuff like this is why I struggled for years with non monogamy. It took me a while to realize that there’s a certain type of man who is drawn to poly dynamics because of their ego. He likes having multiple women fighting for his attention. He likes having unprotected sex with them and he likes that he’s had so many children that are biologically related to him, but he doesn’t like the idea of being a good partner. Of actually having a relationship with his kids or being attentive to people he’s been intimate with. I could be wrong but Robyn is the youngest and I’ve seen this happen a lot. He will find someone younger and move on. That’s not really what polyamory is. Having this many kids with this many women makes it impossible for him to be attentive. I’ve seen similar structures work but they never have more than maybe 3 kids with multiple people taking care of them in a way where no one is forgotten. It’s almost impossible to have that many kids and also be a good dad.

All the wives 'belong' to the man and it tends to happen in insulated communities and is usually manipulative toward the women specifically. Polyamory can have many forms usually choosen by those involved, rather they are male or female, but basically it usually doesn't rely on a Patriarchal structure, insulated (cult-like) communities, and doesn't justify itself in fringe religious groups the way Polygamy usually does. Sometimes there can be multiple committed partnerships or one committed partnerships with allowances for dating agreed upon by both parties in the primary relationship. But it's flexible to what works for all involved.

Can I just say that I have always gotten a fear vibe with Kodi. his Tantrums are spooky. As far as Kodi being arrested, I never believed that. I think most people knew that was for the show
I really felt the worse for Mari. She was the longest wife and he gave her so much disrespect and helped her self esteem hit the toilet. She became an older lady that had never really experienced life with 1 child and a husband who has no interest in her in her on any level. Now she finds herself needing validation and a way to build her self esteem back up and move on from the old man that just can't accept that he is no longer some young good looking catch. I never liked Robyn from the start and the only reason she chose to be with him is for the 🏦 and for help with her kids.

In a lot of the clips you've shown I noticed a pattern of Cody basically asking other people in his life to put their life on hold because it would be inconvenient for him. Like trying to talk someone out of getting their scoliosis surgery because you "aren't going to New York." How can you be so self important you think someone's surgery is less important than how much of a bother it will be for you? I think that shows a lot about the guy right there.

I work from home half the week, and listening to Long-form videos like this really help to keep me awake. Your voice is very nice to listen to, and I enjoy the work you put into all your content! My mom used to watch this show, unsure if she does now, and while I do feel that poly relationships can work, the way thos family handled everything was just not a great approach, and it really is a shame. Grateful that the ladies and kiddos got out of there and are living... comparatively happier lives. 😅

I fell so badly for the kids, now young adults , that he has alienated. The daughter wanting her Daddy after her surgery, for his love and strength and him not being there, hurt my heart so much.
I really hope our three blond bombshells stay close but that they also find new love. Even if it isnt romantic. I always felt like Cody kept them isolated so they didn't really have friends outside of each other. They deserve so much more than he ever gave them.

My dad was on drugs when I was a kid yet even high he was a better dad than Kody has ever been. And no, the abusive childhood does not excuse Kody. My dad grew up in the ghettos with violence everywhere and he still knew to do better for his kids. That’s what pushed him to get clean later. Never watched this show until the fall-out of the "marriages". Binge watched all 17 seasons in a month and WOW! If this is the "right" way to succeed at polygamy, I see why it was made illegal. Exactly how much fraud, manipulation, and outright deception has went on is mind blowing. How could tlc film this and not see it happening too?
I'm thinking TLC did see the dysfunction - pretty clearly, actually. I think it's what they hoped would draw people into the show. So there are absolutely some producers over at TLC who value the money they make off this mess more than the people forever impacted by it.

I always felt that there was some sort of favoritism going on between Cody and his four wives-even from season one. I always thought he was a bad father because if he dedicated a day (like taking a kid to the zoo, botanical garden, museum, park) to each kid he'd only get through half of them in one week if he didn't work. Kids need "just me and daddy/mommy" time regularly to have a decent bond with parents. And I also wondered who and how was paying for so many kids. Extra curriculares like sports and clubs can be pricey to a normal household, were those kids allowed to have fun outside of the house?
There is this other polygamist family show on RU-vid where they live out on red rock ranch or something and they seem to have the best I think. The women get to decide if they marry the husbands seem pretty decent too. Very interesting to see a non toxic\abusive Mormon polygamist group. Check it out!

Meri has been through way too much. She feels guilt even though the "marriage" or "relationship" was long dead. They were just co-parents AT BEST. Then having to feel badly to want to do something for herself? That is so much to handle. All of these women tried so hard to make an impossible situation work.
I had a spinal fusion (because of advanced scoliosis; 50°+ curve) The fact that he didn’t go is insane. The first person I called for when I woke up was my dad then my mom. I was in surgery for 7 hours I believe. My dad had to leave for my siblings and work shortly after I woke up, but he was there before and after I woke up. That’s a traumatic, dangerous because of the risk of paralysis in the event of error, and extremely painful experience. Second- it only took 5 months for my curve to increase in 3 places by 3°-4°. He thinks that can wait ?! I’m very disgusted with that. And ignoring his child saying she’s fine when clearly even her siblings are concerned, to the point where her kidneys are failing. Horrible. And it’s caught on live television. I’m sad for those kids
Spinal fusion is AWFUL. I went through it 9 years ago for my scoliosis. I couldn't imagine going through it without my dads support. My curve also got bad fast over a few months and I was pretty much rushed into the surgery because of how bad it was getting. That can't wait, they told me I'd likely be wheelchair bound if I waited even 4 months. Those poor kids, I couldn't imagine what they're going through and for their dad to just go "it's fine, you're fine" when you're suffering so badly. This breaks my heart so much

I do believe they were trying to glamorize polygamy when they started. It didn't take long for them to fail at that, though, they made it look like a nightmare with every season that went on.
It would be so much better if these women recognized that some of them enjoy the friendship part the most. You can live with your friends and raise kids together. That's a good option. It doesn't need to resolve around a man, especially if the bad gets that bad. But I understand that they would need to let go of so much to get there. I really feel bad for these women.
it’s really hard to enjoy friendship when you’re all being manipulated and controlled by the same puppet master. and if we’re going by the AUB and their standards for marriage, the marriage actually does need to revolve around the man. if it doesn’t, they risk their salvation. it’s incredibly manipulative. there’s multiple times in the show where the wives tried to rely on one another but Kody always had a problem with it. your suggestion would probably work in a polygamous relationship outside of the church, but because their marriage is tied with their religion they’re not able to just do as they please.

Robyn lives in 900K home with Kody. Janelle gave HALF of her proceeds from the sale of her house, lots of money from the family funds and Meri have Robyn ALL of her proceeds from the sale of her house. Hell, Robyn entered the family with lots of debt and Janelle paid it off. Robyn NEVER worked or took care of any of the other kids and wouldn't let her sisterwives take care of hers, but she loves the unity 🙄.
