I think you are actually right. He was a mediocre coder who coded apps like NippleAlert and got hired by Hooli. Later on, he kept on becoming more and more absent minded, but as his peers already considered him a shitty coder, no one ever batted an eye towards his mental decline. He occasionally showed how he was brilliant (like when he remembered the key to the backdoor), but by the time of the documentary, his faculties have deteriorated considerably.

It would've been better if they'd had an ending where everyone was wrong about what the code would ultimately accomplish; the AI decrypts everything, and most people realize that as far as the common experience is concerned, everyone's roughly the same, in that they're not as noble as they portray themselves, but neither are they monsters. The corruption levels plummet as no government secret can be kept hidden, and massive waves of hearings and convictions usher in a much better governmental structure in the world. Honestly, if an AI's smart enough to do all this, then I think it's foolish to just doom and gloom things when it's just as likely that the AI can figure out what problems to fix.

I don't think Gavin has changed. The man that interrupted Gavin's interview was Rod Morgenstern, the author which Gavin heavily plagiarized from when writing his first book. While Rod gets credited as a coauthor for any books he wrote with Gavin afterwards, Gavin still put himself in the spotlight and highlighted himself as a literary icon, not mentioning his partner. Rod is only shown to us as a shadowy backroom character that has no choice but to work with Gavin. Funny enough, they write "adult romance" - literature that's usually considered trashy in the literary world, more focused on achieving bestseller status (something that Gavin likes to highlight) rather than literary merit. Gavin's need of inflating his self importance has not gone away.

I think the ending made a lot of sense in the current landscape. In the last couple of years we've been asking ourselves what powers "big tech" has and when it's too much. The era of big tech just being the cool/rich kids has evolved and we're starting to ask ourselves "why" rather than just "what" we're building. In this sense, having this notion be the final "challenge" for the Pied Piper team was very relevant. Big tech always has been romanticized (similar to how it was at the beginning of the series), but look also at how polarizing companies like Facebook or Amazon have gotten in recent years.

@MsJavaWolf
@MsJavaWolf 4 года назад
From a CS standpoint I don't know if it's that realistic. Yes, AI becomes more and more powerful but while AI exceds at some tasks, there is still no AI that is close to human intelligence when it comes to general problem solving. And in order to crack encryption? You don't only have to be as smart as a human, there are hard mathematical laws, you might never be able to do it, and if so you could also increase the key length to coounteract that.

@@JinjaOnHere at the end of each season, they miraculously solve the problem and come out on top, maybe the writers wanted to do the opposite in the final season. Silicon Valley has pretty decent writing. For example my favourite episode of the show is the day of the condor, where they have the live stream and Richard goes to arbitration. That was set up several episodes before. Or when Erlich and Richard confront Noah about owning weasels, that was established at the beginning of the episode, rewatching it feels almost like watching some detective movie where it's fun trying to predict the outcome. Or the fact that Richard used Jack Barker's chair throughout the series, small details like that. Of course it's not the deepest story ever, and a comedy doesn't need to be that because the jokes were good, but they still added those details, some depth, some social commentary, pretty good show.

Great video! I would add that the only sad thing in this ending is the fact, that Richard ended up representing an idea that Gavin Belson created, and as we know Richard has always put his honor first. That is a tragedy for such person. Also an obvious thing: Gavin doesn't create things himself. That is why he has a ghost writer (Belson's not a "good author" definitely). I'm pretty sure they're not friends with Hendricks, since Gavin hasn't changed at all and that "friend" that got Richard a job might actually be Big Head.

Gavin could have help him get the job of teaching ethics because everyone started to called tethics (Gavins coined term) so is a big fuck you to Richard

A very heartfelt and deep analysis of the finale. Well done! I wish the ending might leave a gateway open for a movie down the line. Anything to bring back the best show I've ever had the pleasure of watching. Funny, thoughtful/ deep, and about tech. There's nothing else I could have wished for in a show 💗💓💞

that would mean the encryption will evolve to something that no human can decrypt. therefore the algorithm will be untouchable because of the encryption

I'm obsessed by the way they have a game with that yellow-blue ball. They play with the ball while saying "always blue" with a cheerful tone. It means that even though everything they pursue could end up with absolutely disappointing and depressing results (blue), they remain completely ok after all

in season one, when they present at techcrunch & win, a guy calls someone & says that Pied Piper ran a 2 min mile. In season 6 when Richard is explaining that how they need to fail miserably, he references to the guy breaking 4 min mile so that no one ever attempts to run under 4 min.

That was insightful and helpful, especially for understanding Jared. SV is definitely the best tech comedy of all time. I will miss it. They did leave the door open for a reboot, however, because -- as Bill Gates said -- "something doesn't add up."

Gavin Belson is still rehashing the other authors work that we see from the techics meeting, the author just realized he’d be more profitable if he made a deal with Gavin and let him steal from him. Still the aweful Gavin we love ❤️

So Richard and crew walked away from billions upon realizing they'd effectively created 'SkyNet'. I imagine the line of SV Billionaire 'philanthropist's, who'd have taken the money - 'let the buyer beware, it's just business' - would wrap around the globe.
