From the 80's Channel 4 TV show 'The Unforgettable'
The Equals formed in 1965 in North London and were a popular R&B group who were well remembered for their million-selling top of the chart single, "Baby Come Back."
The group was formed by vocalist Eddy Grant with schoolmates in the original line-up: Lincoln Gordon on guitar, his twin brother Dervin Gordon who was vocalist, Pat Lloyd on guitar then bass, and drummer John Hall.
The Equals released "Viva Bobby Joe" in 1969. It peaked at No. 6 in the UK Charts and No. 3 in Ireland.

Went looking for "Winnebago - Cheating on your Heart" and somehow ended up here...how lucky am I? This takes me back, way back to my youth and a reminder of better days. I loved this song then and to tell you the truth it does not sound too shabby fifty years on. Thanks for the memories.

This sounds like a Ramones song - by which I mean it sounds kinda like a Beach Boys song. I just discovered The Equals, and I gotta say, they're brilliant.

Yes L. Derv was always the lead singer.,and still is ( the old boy like me! #). I think Eddy Grant is still luxuriating in Barbados.... He was the guqv and amazing what that three chord, but great "Baby come Back" made him a fortune!

The Equals visited Zambia once,no? Was it not Eddie Grant that spotted the talent in Paul Dobson Nyirongo? Wasn't it he that left Paul ( A Paulo) Dobson the wailing Fender Lead guitar he played through out his musical career? Where is that guitar? Why not bring to Auction & donate proceeds to his offspring? What a great talent the Equals were! & Indeed, what a great talent Paul Dobson " Ngozi" Nyirongo became!

On this day, I remembered this song but mainly because we always sang "Bobby Charlton" Viva "Bobby Charlton" back in the day. RIP Bobby, a real Gentleman and Hero. So unlike the arrogant fans who came after you....and are still waiting to repeat your successes. Maybe its because those miserable Cu### don't deserve it or You.

Eddy Grant called when he got the word, he said I s'pose you've heard...about Bobby. Well I rushed to the window and I looked outside, and I could hardly believe my eyes, as a man pushing a giant wheelbarrow rolled up into Bobby drive. And after 53 years I'm still left with one vital question: "Who the f*** is Bobby, Joe?"

@Straker1923
@Straker1923 10 лет назад
The singer is Derv Gordon, who along with his brother Lincoln were founder members. Eddie probably had gone solo when this vid was made...look's like the '80s to me? Pat Lloyd is on bass I think and John, who was the original drummer, may have left the band?
@quaker57
@quaker57 8 лет назад
+Straker1923 This song was released in 1969, it looks like top of the pops so highly unlikely they were singing the same song in the 80's Eddie Grant left the band in 1971 after suffering from a collapsed lung and a heart infection, he returned to Guyana where he decided to go solo, so it is a bit of a mystery as to where he is.

i have watched 3 videos of the Equals so far performing live, and the lead singer i see in all 3 is not Eddie Grant. in 2 he is playing guitar and on back-vocals, in this, Viva Bobby Joe, i don't see him. i know Eddie very well. he lives here in Barbados.

This info is direct from an original member of the band. The song is about a popular cyclist from the late 1960's. Bob Jones. There's very little info about him on the internet but he was winning a lot of races in the UK around the time Eddy Grant was writing the song and is still alive. I wonder if he knows the song is about him? By the way, every lyric website on the Internet has it wrong. It's "Bobby Joe and his FOOT machine"
