It’s the 4th of July today and like any birthday it’s a chance to re-evaluate ourselves as a nation. To look within and find our soul as a nation state. While a nation is an abstract entity unlike a human being, I believe that it can have a soul just like a person does. An inner driving feeling, an energy that guides us and in the case of America it is the idea of total freedom. The idea that in this place, this land, we can do whatever we want, as long as we are responsible for it. People across cultures, gender, religion and more differences could agree upon that idea of America. Beyond political beliefs and loyalty to a nation or hatred against its past sins, we can all see how that freedom defines America. We are a complex and multi-faceted place with new ideas cropping up constantly. It may not be a perfect place, but its place where we can discuss everything and keep growing. America’s soul lives within all of us and in the ideals and values of our nation.
