HELLRAISER III (1992) - WTF Happened to this Horror Movie?!

After the success of the first two Hellraiser movies, fans wondered where a third entry would go after the finite ending of part two. Enter Hellraiser III: Hell on Earth, which turned up the action, delved more into the history of Captain Elliott Spencer, and put Pinhead front and center. Anthony Hickox, who was hot off of the underrated Waxwork 2, was brought in to direct because of his reputation for working fast and cheap. In addition, Miramax having a blooming franchise on their hands, wanted Pinhead and company to go more mainstream, more American.
With Hellraiser 3 having its biggest budget to date, it also ended up being one of the more troubled productions in the series, aside from the Alan Smithee labeled fourth entry. Part three went through multiple delays, different edits, issues with the MPAA, and much, much more. In the latest episode of our video series, we delve into Hellraiser III: Hell on Earth and ask ourselves WTF Happened to This Horror Movie?
WATCH OR OWN HELLRAISER III (1992)HERE! amzn.to/3vsuNrT
This episode was Written by Bryan Wolford, Narrated by Jason Hewlett, Edited by Lance Vlcek, Produced by Lance Vlcek, and Executive Produced by Berge Garabedian.
SERIES SYNOPSIS: Hollywood has had its fair share of historically troubled productions. Whether it was casting changes, actor deaths, fired directors, in-production rewrites, constant delays, budget cuts or studio edits, these films had every intention to be a blockbuster, but were beset with unforeseen disasters. Sometimes huge hits, sometimes box office bombs. Either way, we have to ask: WTF Happened To This Horror Movie?

Cenobites and the box were Hellraiser to me, not Pinhead per say. I like the idea of different boxes and puzzles and different groups of cenobites that appear to different pain/pleasure seekers. I love the EPICcomics they did back in 89 or something, they were mostly in that vein.

As a hardcore Hellraiser fan (the first two) it's gut wrenching and heart breaking to see what happened to the franchise. From what I understand there's a reboot in the works. I have hope, but I have no expectations. Please, please, be true to the original.

I consider 1, 2, and 4 to be the real Hellraiser. #1 was the spirit, #2 was the body, and #4 brought in the family with Angelique; very memorable characters. The rest were... pretty much trash IMHO.
@ZombieDeathRace

It's not true to the original, it is true to the story originally written. They even have a female playing the Hell Priest, or as he is referred to as Pinhead, which matches with the book beautifully because The Hell Priest was slender and androgynous and has a voice like a gitty girl.

I always liked Hellraiser 3 and Hickox's films. Doug Bradley really shines in this film, in or out of the makeup. To me his performance in this is the best out of all the sequels. Pinhead's dialogue is so spot on for the character. While the ending isn't my favorite, it's still an enjoyable entry in the series.

The church sequence in Hellraiser 3 is one of my favorites in horror movies, many things on that movie could have been done a bit better, but the fact that when Pinhead sets foot in the church it's the church itself that reacts violently to his presence was a fantastic idea, in horror movies churches are usually refuges from evil beings like vampires, werewolves, the undead, demons; but in this case Pinhead's such a dark existence that the holy ground the church is can not tolerate him and starts destroying it self, like an organism infected by a disease it starts crumbling.

"Don't debate with me girl, just come here and die while you still have the option of doing it quickly" .The scene where pinhead goes berserk in church:classic. When it comes to pinhead dialogue, part 3 is my favorite. I love it how Shakespearean dialogue makes you forget that it's a talking head in a statue during the first part of the movie. But more importantly we finally got pinhead's backstory. All in all a good conclusion to the Hellraiser story.

They missed the entire point of this character being an agent of Leviathan. He’s part of a collective, he was never supposed to be a singular villain operating on his own behalf. The “endgame boss” of Hellraiser is Leviathan and Hell itself, while the true antagonist is the savagery of the human spirit.

while the comedic cheesy tone is... a little strange, I love the script of this movie!! so full of great ideas, and love the ending with the lament configuration building, reminds me of a lot of the stories from the Hellraiser comics by Epic in the early 90s. And Terry Farrell is adorable.
@latheofheaven
@latheofheaven 3 года назад
Personally, I always thought that this 3rd entry to the series was great! And, not the least because of the lovely Terry Farrell. I've always really liked her, even in DS9. I could never understand why she never seemed to catch on in films. To me, she is eminently likable and a good actress (and lovely looking too! : ) I find her manner and the way she comes across must be intrinsic to her own personality, similar to other actors such as Alan Alda, etc., who are almost always playing a version of themselves. To me, she is just so DAMN likable, I just never understood why her career never seemed to take off. Anyway, you can certainly tell that I REALLY like Terry Farrell : ) Also, I truly really liked the way the movie comes across. The story is very engaging and I felt the production and effects (for the most part) are done very well. It might have not been quite as 'Dark' and Classic as the first film, but for sheer entertainment value (and YES, Terry Farrell) it is my favourite.

None of the sequels can stand up to HELLBOUND and HELLRAISER, which make a terrific blueprint for a horror series: A solid, small scale original that sets out the rules of the universe, then a sequel that expands on the ideas in the first. After that, the series is merely rerunning the same ideas.
@AriesMarquis

All they did was show Julia doing the same thing as Frank, and show more of Hell. Pinhead and the Cenobites weren't even a factor in the entire Hellbound movie, and got, probably, less screen time than the first one. I, literally, watch hellraiser for Pinhead; he is the face of the franchise.
@JohnInTheShelter
@JohnInTheShelter Год назад
@@AriesMarquis Pinhead is special, shouldn't be overused. How can you complain about Julia doing the same thing as Frank and watch the movies for Pinhead doing the same thing over and over? Besides, Jason, Michael Myers, EVERY lead in EVERY horror franchise does the same thing over and over. We saw glimpses of Frank; we saw Julia come into her own--and once her arc was done, so was she. I LIKE the cenobites being used briefly--they lose their specialness if we get used to them.
@AriesMarquis
@AriesMarquis Год назад
@@JohnInTheShelter You said 1 & 2 were totally different when they weren't that much diff. Hellbound just expounded on hell, which I liked. Julia and Frank are NOT the face of the franchise. Pinhead is. Jason is the face of Friday the 13th. Michael is the face of Halloween, Freddy, Nightmare on Elm Street, etc. Frank and Julia are, literally unknown unless you watch the franchise, meanwhile, we are satisfied with Dr. Chanard taking most of the screen time over Pinhead? There was, literally, no usage for Pinhead or the Cenobites, in Hellbound, at all. None. Then, they just kill them all off. 🤦🏾‍♂️ Hellseeker and Inferno should have done well, because they, literally, went back to Pinhead's neutral, barely visible role, yet the movies still flopped. Even the 2022 Hellraiser is better than both originals, and it isn't close.
@JohnInTheShelter
@JohnInTheShelter Год назад
@@AriesMarquis They are totally different. Read what I WROTE: " A solid, small scale original that sets out the rules of the universe, then a sequel that expands on the ideas in the first." They're completely different movies; expanding the scope to the hospital, to Dr. Chanard's whole plotline, to GOING to Hell, which was merely mentioned in the first. Never ever said Julia and Frank are 'the face of the franchise"--how could they be when they're only in two movies? Again, what I actually wrote: "...we saw Julia come into her own--and once HER ARC WAS DONE, SO WAS SHE" How do you get 'the face of the franchise from that?" You're looking for some kind of argument, but you have to invent stuff I said to get there. That's dumb. Later.
@AriesMarquis
@AriesMarquis Год назад
@@JohnInTheShelter Bro, reread: I never said YOU said they were the face of the franchise. 😅 I, generally, implied that since Pinhead is the face, Frank, Julia, and Chanard should NOT be shown more than Pinhead, especially at the scale they were. The faces of franchises should be shown, and Pinhead is NOT, which is why they weren't better than others, to me. And no, they weren't completely diff: Frank escapes cenobites. Julia escapes cenobites. Frank sucks people to revive. Julia sucks people to revive. Frank uses and betrays his lover, Julia. Julia uses and betrays her lover, Dr. Chanard. Pinhead has 10 mins or LESS of screen time in both movies. Those aren't 100% diff. Differences: Dr. Chanard becomes a cenobite; Julia does not. Kirsty experienced hell, slightly in the first, explored it, more in the second. Gave details of Cenobite origins. As you said, they simply expanded, but did not fully go away from each other, which I'm glad part 3, 4, AND Hellraiser 2022 DID leave those 2 alone (although 3 did pick up from when pinhead returned at the end of Hellbound).

Of all my friends I seem to be the only one who can say I loved Hellraiser III. I've always thought this movie was a fun and entertaining piece of cinema. And yes, I did have a crush on Terry Farrell because of her character of Joey here.
@TracyGJacksonTV
@TracyGJacksonTV 6 месяцев назад
Hellraiser III:Hell on Earth was one of the first films to be released by Dimension Films which was the newly formed subsidiary of Miramax Films as well as the first Hellraiser to be filmed in the United States. There was a lot of things in the original script some was far different than what was seen in the film, one of which was Sandy’s demise because in the script Pinhead’s arms came out the pillar of soul and grabbed Sandy sucking her life force and leaving her a dry husk and The Boiler Room nightclub was originally named The Underground. Hellraiser III:Hell on Earth was filmed the same time that Children of The Corn II:The Final Sacrifice was filmed due to the fact that both films were filmed in North Carolina. Universal Studios almost bought distribution rights to Hellraiser III:Hell on Earth and planned to release it before Dimension Films got the rights.

1 & 2 were excellent. 1 particularly so but Dr Channard in 2 was possibly more terrifying than Pin Head 3 was good. The new Cenobites made it interesting but too much cheese. 4 was watchable at best. As far as I'm concerned they're the only ones that exist.

As a kid the Hellraiser VHS covers use to petrify me. Even during my teen horror movie phase it was a series that seemed to much for me. Then when I was a bit older Hellraiser 3 aired on TV and realised it wasn't that bad. Then much later I checked out all the movies on YT right up to 6. Then Pinhead replaced Jason as my favourite horror icon. I'm not keen to check out the rest because they do look pretty bad. And as good as 6 was it kind of replicated the same plot as 5, which was really damn good and tried something different like chronicling the victims of Pinhead. I feel like this could have made a successful TV show if done right.

There's an absolutely amazing retrospective done on Hellraiser, I think it's even called "WTF happened to Hellraiser". The channel goes over every movie in the series and breaks them down. If you're into this style, I'd suggest looking it up. I would link it but that might be seen as lame to some, so just search it. Worth a watch.
