Do a video on Action (Hack and Slash) games origin and re-tell which game has achieved the most n was created in its own (genre) also are all games were directly inspired or indirectly from Devil May Cry 2001?
MikeD I didn't really have any problems with the new God of War but that's probably because I wasn't really warm on any of the original God of War games.
Imo, the game felt like it tried to be a bit like Silent Hill, with the more open town map, the radio locating monsters, the weird mindfuck area, but it lacked what made Silent Hill so good, its atmosphere
To true. When thinking of things the sequel did better than the first one I just think... Um The knife takedowns are more brutal? You can craft ammo for the guns you want to use more? There are more hot babes in the sequel? (they all die though so that is a moot point)
Ehhhhh I feel like 1 had better horror moments and cool ideas, which makes sense from the OG director, but 2 is much more of a good constant experience. I pick 2 over 1 any day
I love them both different cuz yea the 2ed one doesn't really carry over alot of the good things from the 1st .the enemy are not so good and scary but the bad guys are much better omg .Theodore is pretty cool
@@melvinmerkelhopper5752 The story in TEW2 is way better. At the last 3rd of the game, I was verbally rooting for Sebastian to save the day. Rarely has a victory felt so earned in gaming as Sebastian's redemption story.
If there's one thing I've learned after having played EW1 and EW2, and looking up what others thought of the game and reading the comment sections, is that EW1 and EW2 have some seriously divisive elements. People either seem to love one or the other, or both, or hate one or the other or both.
They are both great but so far I’m living the gameplay of the second game more the first one was mostly shoot and pray that you get ammo in this one I’m playing stealthy as much as possible and trying to conserve resources
@@rancho5709 I finished the first one and stopped on the last chapter for the second on tbh the second game declines in quality after the first couple of chapters both are on par
That last bit about Hyperbit could not be more true. This "Family" (super weird term to use. Sorry) of RU-vidrs is filled with some of the greatest, most genuine content on this blasted website. Seeing Charlie grow as a writer and editor over the years has been nothing short of inspirational. Good on ya, buddy. You're one o' the good ones.
Oni376 Who are some of the other ones; Raycevick, Mark Brown, anyone else? I'm looking for more of this type of content, really the most interesting gaming focused stuff on RU-vid nowadays.
Marcus S definitely not. Matthewmatosis, Noah Caldwell Gervais, Errant Signal I tend to lean towards. There are so many RU-vid reviewers that say a lot of nothing or try to impress with cool voices and jokes. These guys range from smart, informed critiques to insightful, but occasionally stretching analyses. I’ll try find some more for you. (Also ragnarrox and superbunnyhop, though the former has a bit of meh content. When he reviews or discusses hidden gems though he really hits the mark)
Marcus S Valkyrie Aurora for chill but genuine love for games, Super Butter Buns for fun and goofy advice for games, The Sphere Hunter for really solid recommendations, Hell, I'd even count Super Eyepatch Wolf as the same vein of rigorous analysis as all of the above, albeit for anime primarily, though he does dabble in games with semi-frequency.
The Brit lived in Spain for some time of his childhood life, don't know when. In a Kingdom Hearts video he showed a few clips of his old PS2 cooy of the game and it was even with spanish text. So that's probably why.
The game gets better and better as you progress. The characters really grew on me and the story threads regarding Sebastian's past at Beacon come together for a fist pumping climax of chainsaw catharsis.
I was surprised how well they kept up the oppressive atmosphere and surprise scares in an open area. The dressing of it was pretty amazing, I enjoyed it a lot. Plus the fact that all enemies were genuinely dangerous was a very refreshing thing! Honestly I like the house shootout part cause I had fun playing it, but from a design standpoint I see where you're coming from.
Match burning make sense lore wise in the first game due to Ruvik's trauma from the fire. The second game replace the match with stomping although it can only be triggered on downed enemies and it's not possible to do it to enemies that are lying around waiting for their chances to ambush the player.
The first game was jank city but that doesn't mean it wasn't a great game. The second game while good removed everything that made the first one unique and gave it a generic story. Hope they make 3 more like 1. Edit: Almost forgot to point out they made every villain look like a bitch in 2 and ruined the awesome build up the Administrator had in the first game.
I honestly loved this game. Such an improvement over the first in terms of story, atmosphere, art style and even gameplay. Sure it has a fair share of problems, the later open world sections lack polish and it gets a bit too action-focused, but the strong moments very easily overshadow those problems. Where the first game was drowned in ugly brown and grey tones, TEW2 took inspiration from Hannibal, Twin Peaks and Shining to create nightmarish visuals and gorgeous cinematography, making it one of the most beautiful horror games since old Silent Hills despite its technical shortcomings.
@@arsenii_yavorskyi It's no Shakespeare, but it's effective and easily understandable and works well for an adventure story. Each storyline has a point and some cool moment. You get a clear introduction so most of the game can be spent exploring the villains, STEM and Sebastian's PTSD. The first game threw you into a meatgrinder with no exposition and for the first few hours seemed like a badly structured copy of RE4. Many players stopped before even finding out about STEM, the most interesting part of the game. The villain was underwhelming, you never got time to get attached to the side characters. It was a mess with some brilliant ideas lost among clichés and forced references to Mikami's other games. TEW2 took those brilliant ideas, focused the narrative on them and cleared up the rest.
hell no. TEW2 story is dumb and in-your-face. it doesn't work, it makes no sense whatsoever. and I can prove this, so read further. ● Sebastian acts like he did in the first game, i.e. confused and clueless, despite the fact that he knows he's in STEM. he frequently questions the 'reality', despite knowing perfectly well that it's all in his daughter's head. ● Mobius sending STEM-host's own mother into STEM is the dumbest plot contrivance I've ever seen. I mean, for crying out loud, how did they not expect her to turn on them? even if they didn't send her in, she'd still turn on them, because they performed cruel experiments on her daughter. ● in the first game Sebastian's wife acts as if she's been indoctrinated by Mobius, completely loyal to them, but in the second game she shows no signs of any of this. perhaps the realization of what they were doing to her daughter helped her regain free will, but a) this was not mentioned or even implied in game, and b) this makes the decision to send her into STEM even more stupid. ● Mobius connecting their entire organization to STEM (an experimental system that's not been properly researched, but has been proven to be extremely dangerous and prone to unexpectedly go out of whack) is even more stupid than their previous idea. case in point: what happened to them at the end of the game. ● Somehow Mobius didn't notice that Kidman removed her chip, which makes no sense. ● Mobius somehow let a bunch of psychos into STEM, despite having safety precaution procedures in place specifically to keep them out. ● Lily is an annoying, cliche 'dumb kid', non-character plot device. it makes me sick how much the developers wasted her potential. ● Lily appears to be the same age she was when Mobius kidnapped her, despite the fact that at least 5 years has passed since then. they could have been giving her drugs to stifle her growth, but this was never mentioned or implied in the game. if she just appears this way to Sebastian because her only remembers her a this age, then why does she look exactly the same when they're both out of STEM? ● Sebastian's stealth takedowns look way too sadistic for a mentally healthy human being, which is further highlighted by the way he killed one of the bosses near the end of the game. this in itself isn't a bad thing, in fact, I think it's pretty cool, him going crazy from all of the messed-up shit he's been through. however, his mental condition is never mention in the game, making it pointless and not in line with the rest of the story (remember, psychos get superpowers in STEM). ● Most of the monsters (except for Obscura) have no reason to look the way they do, while in the first game monster design reflected the story. ● Ruvik is completely abandoned by the plot, in fact, I don't think he's even mentioned in the game. this makes no sense, since at the end of the first game he escaped STEM and is now free to pursue his sweet revenge. ● The last scene in the game is an groan-inducing sequel bait. this is just off the top of my head, I could probably list 50 more problems with the plot if I replayed the game. but this much is enough to make it clear: the story in TEW2 makes no sense, it's boring and contrived, it's too explicit and literal, and it depends too much stupidity and extremely unbelievable turns of events. this, in essence, constitutes lazy and unprofessional writing. I doubt I'll ever meet the writer responsible for this mess, but if I do, I'll spit in his face. none of this means that you don't have the right to enjoy the game. hell, I did, when I first played it. not for its story (the best parts of this game have nothing to do with it), and there are other problems besides that, but there's still some good in it, hidden among the garbage. too bad it only made the whole thing feel even more disappointing. in any case, feel free to enjoy the game, but don't go telling people that it has good story, because that's a blatant lie.
Really love hearing this from someone who's critique I respect. Always thought I was kidding myself when I had this as one of my GOTY contenders. Didn't really see anyone else share the sentiment but I really loved this game and glad to see I'm not alone!
The Evil Within franchise has to be one of the most "fine" franchise ever. In the sense that "Its just fine". The games don't do anything amazing but not terrible either. I like the first Evil Within slightly more but the sequel isn't bad at all. As for the "open world" aspect, well... sometimes while playing EW 2 I was confused and lost as to why am I doing what I am doing. The story felt that it was directionless.
"This is all absolutely right in the awkward middle ground of action and horror that doesn't manage to pull off either to a high standard" Oh like resident evil 6
I never played RE4, and I loved my experience with The Evil Within. I liked the action, the challenge and the overall ambiance. I was already planning on getting The Evil Within 2 during Spooktober and your video totally convinced me that it was the right call !
My one dissapointment with the second game would be the change of voice actor for Sebastian. I really grew attached to his voice in the first game and felt that it fit perfectly.
I sincerely adore this game, honestly. A friend gifted it to me on Steam a couple of Christmases ago, and I fell in love so hard that I said to him "Hey, you need to play this game yourself." He then bought it for himself and, of course, he loved it as well.
I think the scene in The Evil Within 2 where you are locked in the room with monsters in the forest is an homage to the first game, which I also assumed was an homage to the best part of Resident Evil 4... Surviving in the cabin with Luis during that awesome timed battle
Honestly I subscribe to channels like you and HyperBitHero because of your interesting critiques and thoughts about games. Very well thought out videos
I took your advice and picked TEW2 after much debating and I was pleasantly surprised with how much I enjoyed it. I thoroughly enjoyed the first one and I'm glad to say the second one is just as good in its own way. Each have pros and cons but both are stellar titles. One had better boss fights and mood throughout. Two had solid gameplay and a more enjoyable story...mostly (looking at you Father Theodore). Both compliment each other well.
Strange how Brit liked this more than the first seeing how he hates forced walking segments. Which this game has in bundles. Yeah part 1 might have them but barely and they are very brief. Part 1 was mostly game play focused which I loved. Part 2 takes a massive nose dive half way through. I’ll replay part 1 a million times over before I replay part 2 even once. But I guess I respect your opinion lol.
Glad you like this game. It's one of the best Horror game last year imo. Though personally, not enough boss fights & anima encounters. I was really hoping that anima encounters to be more random throughout dungeon sections. Also, how is this game still have no DLC/expansions?? Clearly there are some characters that need its own story here.
Goddamnit Charlie, my backlog is big enough as it is without you making damn solid recommendations! Kind of a weird situation where you need to play through the medicore first game to enjoy the badass sequel but I trust ya.
Had a blast playing this game, really the surprise of the year for me. Had a blast doing Knife Only on this game, absolutely fantastic! Well made levels, good foes, fun bosses etc.
I loved the shooting gallery for all the great quotes from Seabass such as: “Still got it.” “He’ll....yes!” *followed by fist pump And ”DIS-A-POIN-TED!!”
I highly disagree. The 2nd game is far superior in terms of almost everything from the gameplay to the world design maybe except for the horror aspect cuz i a lot of people didnt find the 1st game to be scary.
@@lapsedilationdrive3943 I can acknowledge a few reasons to prefer TEW2 to TEW1: 1) you felt humiliated by the difficulty of the first game (a surprisingly large number of critics brought up difficulty as a negative). 2) you were impatient and couldn't follow the story of TEW1 (so you feel like the idiot-proof, spoon-feeding approach to story-telling in TEW2 is better). 3) you don't care about the story at all (so you disregard the plot holes in TEW2, and its low quality of writing in general).
@@arsenii_yavorskyi cool story. And all of the problems that you mentioned are just merely your opinions. I enjoyed the story that is provided from begining to end and understood it clearly even with the plotholes. Not sure why spoonfed storytelling is a problem for you cuz many other story driven games also had ultilised the same method of storytelling and most of them are also critically acclaimed. And a lot of people like me prefer the 2nd game over the first one along with the critics. Not to say that its an excellent horror game. Just good but not great. I can understand why the first one is more appreciated towards hardcore survival horror fans but the way you wrote your statements feels like you want to force everyone to like TEW1 which is BS since people have different opinions.
Man, for a second there I paused the video and got worried that Bit died. I paused exactly before Brit says that Bit hasn't died. Got scared for a moment lol Great video as always Charlie. Which anime will be reviewed in Man of Passion this year?
when I finally beat classic mode felt so good and go back for the remaining trophies infinite ammo and kill EVERYTHING!! but I give first credit for the bosses except the final one, each had his way to kill, while here all where "shoot and dodge until they are dead"
Whoever doesn't like The Evil Within didn't play them on higher difficulty. Play on nighmare difficulty and the game is 10x more scarier and enjoyable as you actually need to think how to approach each encounter instead of just shooting everything that moves.
I played the demo for the game and I played it on Nightmare. You want to know how many hours I fleshed in the danm demo? 14 or 15 hours. And I loved all of it. And I just replayed it for the fun of it and just found out how to get the shotgun. I was always intrigued and hooked by the amazing visuals and aesthetic of the whole game. I'm a sucker for real survival horror with a deep story, and evil within 2's demo made me buy the full game because of how the story hooked me in.
One of the few things I did find disappointing about The Evil Within 2 was the fact that Jennifer Carpenter didn't play Kidman. She didn't really have much room to shine in the original but the scene at the end of the sequel when Kidman is going off on the leader of the organization would have been perfect for Jennifer Carpenter.
The story of 2 sucked, and the actors were different because of the writers strike. But they just had to hit that October deadline. Most disappointing game ever, complete trash.
It’s a 4 year old video but if you haven’t played this game in first person you should. It’s kinda jank at times but seeing all the creepy shifting of rooms and monsters in the first person is wayyy more immersive and scary than in 3rd person. Also just some of the imagery is gorgeous when seeing it from Sebastians perspective like the labs towards the end of the game. Entering that stark hallway into the room filled with massive tubes is way more appealing to look at when you aren’t staring at the back of his head and instead seeing what he is
Fuck yeah this is an awesome video and the game is definitely underrated, it’s so good that I ended up getting hooked after maybe a few minutes of gameplay. out of all the survivor horror games this one is definitely up there and worth checking out.
Same. I much prefer the more concentrated bouts of action and crazy variety of levels in that game then the sequel. Felt much more intense and satisfying figuring out how to get through each segment while saving as much ammo as you can. EW2 in comparison was too easy due to just how OP stealth and cover takedowns were. Also no mention of the matches? Really? One of the most satisfying mechanics from the first game wasn't even mentioned in this video. Still, really enjoyed both games.
TheScape55 agreed the first is more challenging. The levels change constantly where as the second is mostly the boring town the whole time. Shinji mikami knows what hes doing
Did anyone else notice the Twin Peaks references in The Evil Within 2? Early on in the game there's a room with red curtains and a floor that has a similar pattern to the Black Lodge. There's also a trophy you can earn titled fire walk with me.
I liked seeing how Evil Within 1 & 2 both tanked and no-one played them, just 4 days after release they were down to £15. I loved them both for different reasons, It felt like I was the only one who knew that they're actually great survival horror games, they were my secret.
It's funny they both tanked for different reasons too. The first Evil Within tanked because no one liked it and the sequel tanked because no one cared about it.
I like both Evil Within games. With the first one, there were SOOOOOOOOO many callbacks to Resident Evil, because Mikami directed the game. Evil Within 2 was waaaaaaaaay better than the first by leaps and bounds.
