I’m a Korean-Canadian and my hypothesis on why there is more longevity and prevalence of kpop boy and girl groups partly has to do with cultural differences. Korea is a very collectivist culture that values social harmony. There are definitely disputes between members but I think they value the group experience and are more inclined to want to remain in the group setting. A lot of prominent solo acts in kpop had some exposure to the west through living abroad or schooling like Jay Park, Tablo, PSY, Jessi, CL etc. Kpop also has extremely intricate group choreography which looks phenomenal with a large number of people. Finally, a practical reason is that Korean men have to serve in the military so with a large number of group members, they can remain active and create sub groups while certain members are away. Part of the charm of groups is seeing their friendship, group interactions and you can see how they lean on one another during hard times. A big part of korean culture is “Jeong”which is a kind of familial love which is reflected in the language where members calls their older members “older brother” or “older sister” instead of their names. After such an isolating period like the pandemic, everyone is craving togetherness, celebrating life and social interaction which kpop does so well.

ALSO just to add, it’s still crazy to me how to this day boybands are STILL looked down upon. i mean, im a 20 year old with a few posters and albums in my room, and every time i say i want to buy more i always get comments like “again??” or whenever they’re brought up it’s always with this mocking tone like.... obviously my close ones have no malicious intent but it’s rather interesting. like yes, i am a fan of this group, i want more albums/merch and attend their concerts, idk what’s weird. my dad thinks me owning 3 bts albums is a lot lol (there’s also an added layer of the boybands i like being asian.... which i do get comments on as well but that’s another thing) idk i just find it interesting how fangirls are seen as “obsessive” and “crazy” for being invested and passionate about their favourite groups bc they’re young girls but young men being intense about sports team isn’t? like, some men have actually destroyed property and hurt people over their teams losing, but u will NEVER see the media call them crazy or obsessive. there’s definitely a layer of misogyny to the boyband culture lol. needless to say i have a lot of thoughts about this topic as a boyband enjoyer lol. loved this video, very educational, i love seeing how past boybands have influenced the current ones

One of the things that impresses me the most about BTS' success is that their "father", Bang Sihyuk, doesn't seem to be interested on replicating what he created with BTS, and in the interviews he has done regarding the "secret formula" of creating a global phenomenon as massive as BTS, he explains he doesn't know what he did but he atributes the success of the group on their ability to tell the members' own stories in a music form which is so refreshing. Is not so often that we see the man "behind" the success of a certain artist not trying to somehow steal all the credit to himself.

BTS’ impact is so weird to me, it’s the first time I’ve seen a boyband fan base have not only a good chunk of male fans but also have the MAJORITY of their fans be in their 20’s 30’s and 40’s. They definitely helped break the “boyband fanbases only consist of young female audience” that’s been used to discredit boyband as artists for such a long time (which it shouldn’t btw, why are artists with a “ male dominated audience considered more “credible” while artists with majority female fanbases are seen as nothing but thirst traps)

I think a big reason behind the lack of western boy bands now is that the one direction fandom is still so strong and would rather stay as Stan’s of 5 solo careers than jump ship to a new boyband because they know that eventually that boy bands gonna split up and they don’t wanna have to deal with that again

I just love one direction. I know other great boy bands exist, but no other boybands quite get to me like one direction have. So now I just follow their solo careers and thankfully they all seem to be doing well.

When you said Stray Kids I had to rewind haha they got me into kpop! Been a Stay for 3 years now

i think the lack of boybands is due to, like you said, the overuse of the formula but also just because the music industry has changed so much since then, and it’s a bit... outdated? speaking as a kpop fan, the thing that sells a lot with these kpop boy groups is relatability, or at least them being marketed as such. not only songs with lyrics that feel relatable to all ages but also personalities as well. having each member of a group have a personality that can’t just be described like an archetype. with the rise of social media and new platforms, kpop companies come up with new ways to make the fans feel connected to the artists, as if they were their best friend. and THAT really changed how boybands were constructed, i think. if newer boybands emerged with that old formula, they wouldn’t reach the same success as before bc kpop introduced a new mold, that makes the old one less appealing (also choreography. kpop set the bar HIGH for that too. no more silly one step two step anymore). basically, they’re still pretty much the same as their core, and u can see elements that were present in the 90’s, but they’re marketed more prominently now and i strong believe social media had a role in changing the boyband mold. maybe in the upcoming years, we’ll see western boybands inspired by kpop groups? i mean, considering the immense success of bts it seems like it’s only a matter of time. (EDIT: oh and also oversaturation. i forgot to mention it but there are SO many boybands now, especially if you look at kpop specifically. when there are so many that try to become the “next big thing” the attention gets split and it’s hard for one group to really stand out from the others. once bts leaves, which isn’t gonna be for a while, i don’t think One group is gonna be able to take their place. that fame is just gonna be split to multiple groups instead. that’s what i think, at least)

i noticed you mentioned The Wanted on here for 1d rivalries, but i feel like they deserve more appreciation (as i’m a the wanted stan myself) - since they kinda brought popular boybands back after the 90s. Max George (member of the band) has said that radio stations wouldn’t play their music at times bc they would ‘lose reputation for playing a boyband’ and a lot of people dismissed them as they were the first ‘big’ boyband for a couple years (‘big’ as in being able to do world tours and breaking America), but once 1d came along, it was alot different. I believe both bands have their own amazing qualities but The Wanted are often looked down upon and not seen as a ‘popular’ band due to society as i said above.

It is interesting to see BTS slowly becoming one of he biggest artists of current century because they're not all even fluent in English (you know, as western audience would expect for someone global) and yet they literally smacked the doors down and opened the gates for dozens of other Korean/Asian acts to thrive. I've always been a fangirl and a fan of boybands and even though it took me quite some time to get into that BTS-mania, I honestly feel like there's a need for some serious research about their success - one that is not filled with misogyny and prejudice. For bands like 1D it's quite given why they were global, being born in a English speaking country is a huge advantage from the start, and they usually have very successful promotions since debut. And for BTS, I feel like they're one in a generation proof that passion and dedication to their own craft can bring you to the stardom. Not to mention, I think the average and median of the age of BTS fans is higher than other boybands. I know several people in their 40s and even 50s who unapologetically admit they're fans of BTS. And that is probably the reason why they're on the rise so 10 (?) years into their career. One could expect they'd be slowly making the place for younger bands as this is what usually happens when the biggest group of teenage fans goes to college and finds job, unfortunately lack of time is one of the reasons why I stopped being an active fangirl. It's gonna be interesting to look at their career in 15 years, whether or not their success will continue.

I think what you said about reinventing the boygroup formula - bts did so well with that. bc while they still followed the typical kpop boy group concept, they reinvented it by singing about their struggles as young adults and mental health + adding storytelling to their mvs which got fans more involved in their lore, etc

nowadays i feel like the only real noticeably popular boy bands (and kinda girl groups too tbh) have all been from kpop. as a kpop stan i’m happy to see my favs getting all this attention but it would also be nice to see another western boy group make waves around the world again.

I always watch your videos and seeing Skz on the thumbnail made me so happy 😁 Edit:- straykids is in itself a rare phenomenon especially in the k-pop industry , with the leader (Bang chan) choosing his own members , having an almost 100% self composed, self written, self produced discography , creating their own sound and not following the usual route for a k-pop boy group. Their music is even now termed as "noise music" by many people yet they've achieved so much in only 4yrs without ever succumbing to the criticisms and continuing to be true to themselves,their steady growth over the years is insane...

I think for the newer boybands ahead the key lies in being different simply put. They will have to find ways to revitalise and be independent of generic boyband norms.. being directioner/army i think it's because of this reason 1D and BTS have gotten huge.. Like for 1D it was about creating this clean neighbourhood boys image who didn't dance not wore same clothes that worked for them. And for BTS it was about creating songs that connects with you mentally and emotionally to get through rougher times. I think in that respect BTS has really changed boyband norms cause despite the definition of a boyband emphasising love songs, BTS ' discography is very diversified and wide that is not restricted to love songs. So further ahead boybands will have to find a way to be unique and stand different and also connect to people

i've been waiting for this video! it was so nice to see how boybands have grown over time - i am a massive boyband fan. i also agree that for whatever reason, people of older generations as well as men have such a problem with things being built for teenage girls. ive seen book reviews of ya books, written for teens, where adults in their 30s or 40s said that it was a trashy book and they couldn't relate to it... it's the same with boybands. also, it felt like seeing my identity, since i first became a directioner, and im a kpop stan as well now...

as someone who used to love watching big time rush as a young girl to then getting into 5SOS (not boy band i know) then into why don't we, then into on direction, and now a HUGE k pop fan. i love seeing these kinds of videos. boy bands have always been a huge part of my life even though i love do deny otherwise. Seeing stray kids in the thumb nail is what drew me into this video. and i think you doing a video on them and doing a deep dive would be really cool. they might be like any-other k pop group to some, but Stray kids is an amazing group that is like no other. the love they have for the fans is HUGE and the love we have for them is even bigger.

Hmm good video! I don't think there will be another western boy band anytime soon on the scale of previous ones because of how the perception of pop stars seems to have shifted. There seems to be more emphasis on making pop stars seem more authentic compared to before when all pop stars were ridiculed for being manufactured. With the stereotypes around boy bands I think it would be harder to market them with this kind of organic image that is trendy now.

this is such a great video!! as a 29 year old millennial, the jonas brothers were everythiiiiing to me when i was a teenager lol. every inch of my bedroom's walls and ceiling were covered in posters hahaha, i was absolutely insane. i cried like a baby when they surprised the world with their reunion!!

I think another reason why there aren't really big rising Western boybands is cause Kpop is so huge. How can western groups compare with that insane choreography and churn out of music? Why bother when Kpop boy groups are killing it

The most fascinating Boy Band to me is Big Time Rush. Mainly because..... I don't think they were originally made to be successful. The members auditioned to play a role on the show at first, with the original idea was to have fake character names instead of their real ones. Kendall, James, Carlos, and Logan all got the parts, filmed the first season, record some hits for the show, and then went on with their lives. But then it BLEW UP! Those songs were getting big sales, viewship went up every episode, and eventally started getting really popular. BTR opened for Justin Bieber at one point. This lead to them making a whole album, gettimg multiple seasons of their show, and even a TV movie. They sold out concerts and loads of young to teen girls adored them. They ended it in 2014, mainly because they needed a break. When they got back together, concert tickets sold out in a matter of days. Then they started releasing new stuff with a fresh and updated sound. They just had another tour this summer where the sold out Madison Square Garden. The fact that so many people still care about this childhood boy band is fascinating to me. They now have their own label, perform at various different events and places, and make music they never could before is amazing. They manage to mature while still keeping their signature sound and life they had when they were younger. I'm so happy the managed to find a balence and end up becoming big once again. Rusher for life.

OMG PLEASE DO A CASE STUDY ON MINDLESS BEHAVIOR

I think that kpop is the innovative industry for both boygroups and girlgroups at the moment and that's why they have so much success. ( I mean a lot of it is of course based around the fandom culture and building insane parasocial relationships with fans, but that's a different topic). They are mixing things up with different concepts, so there are is always a group to your liking, wther it's a cute concept, a teen/girl crush concept, or a sexy mature concept, etc. Then there are the lineups with co-ed groups like Kard or rotational groups like NCT with all the subunits. You have the AI groups like Aespa and K/DA, or generally groups with a lot of lore around them. And of course, you have the self-produced idols, which I think is what attracts so many people to groups like Seventeen, Monsta X, Stray Kids, BTS, G-Idle, and many more. In fact, having groups write, compose and produce their own songs is one of the most ground-breaking things to come out of kpop (which is ironic, considering how manufactured the industry is). So yeah, I see kpop as dominating the group music scene for a couple more years at least, and then we'll see.

I think when you talk about kpop struggling to break internationally, often time you mean 'in america' or in the west, lol. Great video, tho, as always. It would be super interesting to see a new big boyband coming from America or England. I wonder how would it look like nowadays. Would they go into the pop direction of 1D or more into what is trendy at the moment, like hiphop?

I think even if we do get to a point without popular boybands, there will be another eventually. History and trends tend to repeat themselves.

feels weird to me that you named pretty much but not cnco bc they were marketed together for a little while, and i have always felt that cnco was the biggest boygroup of the time after one direction but skdkdjd i guess they are a very latinamerican experience. now that i think about it i actually miss watching their interviews and stuff, they used to do a bunch of interviews with the girls over at buzzfeed. anyway going off topic. jasmine is always such a joy to watch your channel 🥰

I’m kind of a boyband veteran myself… 😅 When I was 12 I was an official Take That fan club member, I met the Backstreet Boys when I was 17 and started traveling around Europe to see and meet Westlife when I was 18… 😂 Although there were always people giving you a weird look when the topic came up I never regretted being a fan and spending loads of money for CDs, concert tickets, merch and even flights and hotels - I have so many fond memories! 😊🙏 I actually thought for the last 15 years or so that I was kinda done with the phenomenon… but then I clicked on a random One Direction video and… well. Fangirling hard right now… 😅 And, yes, I’m 40. 😂 I have two small daughters and if they’ll ever love any band as much as I used to love Take That or Westlife I swear I’ll pack the up and join that travelling circus again! 😂 I’m also sure that there’ll be another BIG boyband eventually… and another after that… 😜

Love this insightful video. Btw, there are exceptions to the last bit about boybands struggling to reinvent themselves: After their reunion in 2005 after 10 years, Take That came back with a whole new sound and image that not only won 90s Thatters’ hearts again but also won over a whole new generation of fans. Their reunion album (Progress) with Robbie Williams gave them the best selling album by a group in the 2010s, beating even 1D and Westlife. Also, their reunion sparked other boybands like Boyzone and NKOTB to reunite and even BSB and 1D have admired ⫩’s comeback ever since it happened. So, we should never lose hope that we’ll see this happen again x

I always enjoy your evolution videos. They are always very well researched and presented in unique, relatable, and fun ways! Can we get an evolution of Bjork tho? Pleeaaassseeee???? She would be such an exciting person to look into, especially from the perspective of her artistic pop genre and often collaboration with hyper pop artists!

One of the reasons I think it's difficult for any group (boy or girl) outside of the K-Pop Space to pop is bc K-Pop has pretty much taken over the "pop group" space & the only way I can explain that is bc I think K-Pop companies took the Boy/Girl group fourmula paired it with their own training formula made famous by one SM Entertainment! & after years go by members while being in the group would have solos, act in K-Dramas & youtube even (Solar from Mamamoo has her own youtube channal) & yes of couese groups do disband, or a member would leave to focus on their solo endeavors or simply to get away from the company but would still stay in the group & comeback with the group (Taecyeon from 2PM is a great example on this or most recently Wheein from Mamamoo heck Girls Generation (SNSD) a couple months back announced a comeback for their 15th Anniversery as a group dispite most of the members no longer being with SM Entertainment & the group being on hiatus for the past 5 years, & also GOT7 did such a revolutionary thing, all members left JYP Entertainment about a year ago, & all members stressed to their fans they wasn't disbanding & they had a plan, & they didn't, they insted took the name rights & the 7 members are the first K-Pop group to own their name rights & came back a couple weeks ago finally making the music they want to make all the while they will do their solo stuff & are planning to come togeether every couple years to make coming together as a group again special) also every group has a set concept (Example's (these are the easiest to explain so I sticked with these examples, Blackpink & Red Velvet's concept is they have 2 diffrent sides or 2 different concepts, The Pink Concept of Blackpink or The Red Side of RV is the Sweet, Bright & Girly side of the groups while The Black Concept of Blackpink or The Velvet Side of RV is the Darker & Edger side of the groups (& the legendery R&B bops by Red Velvet & their vocals that would leave you shook!!) & NCT (aka NEO CULTURE TECHNOLGY) concept is that they can littrally have an infinate amount of members (currently 22 & counting!!) & can have units (groups INSIDE the group) around the world including Korea (NCT has NCT 127 & NCT DREAM both based in Korea while NCT U is an everchanging line up bc it's basically the members that fits the concept of that particular song) also I think somthing as simple as K-Pop's album packaging makes you intreaged on why does it look so different, why is their different versions of one album, why is their so many stuff in it, why do people make such a big fuss over photocards (which as a photocard collector, it helps me clear my mind & get it off toxic shit, so I'm like EXCUSE ME!!😂) & other stuff like merch, seasons greetings, signing up for VLIVE or WEVERSE, lightsticks, the series of live shows & an act can win those shows (it's like Top of The Pops or TRL? meets The X Factor if I had to explain it), K-Pop is like another world, thats the only way to put it. I do know theres record labels from the states reaching out to K-Pop companies (example would be Olivia Rodrigo's record company & HYBE developing a girl group together & whatever is going on with NCT Hollywood or whatever it'll be called (since NCT China ended up being called WayV & thank God!) knowing that & knowing theres quite a few groups out there that find it difficult time to get noticed I would like to hear your veiws on this?

tmb es que en corea las votaciones son cada semana, cada comeback que hacen tus favs, hay votaciones en los music show (que encima para nosotros cae en horario de madrugada a eso de las 3am o 2am) 22:50 creo que en el kpop el hecho que nadie ande desesperado por el el siguiente "big boy band" es porque la fama les llega asi noma, no es que anden modo simon cowell promocionando hasta las patas. Es como ellos lanzan la musica y los fans llegan por si solos, y con eso la popularidad. Actulamente grupos como: stray kids, ateez, nct, txt, enhypen,seventeen, etc la andan rompiendo. Algunos de los grandes grupos de la 3rd generation andan en hiatus por lo del servicio militar (aka exo y bts). Actualmente en el kpop anda dominando los girl groups (ive, leserafim, newjeans, g idle) Además ten en cuenta que en el kpop, es más facil para las empresas decir "tal grupo se disuelve" que mantenerlos en hiatus. La verdad aqui no tienen porque darle falsas esperanzas a los fans con que van a entrar en hiatus y apliquen la de 1D. En el kpop hiatus significa hiatus (que generalmente es por el servicio militar, depende de la cantidad de miembros y en el orden en que se alisten y de eso demora el hiatus). porque es más facil disolver que poner en un hiatus tipo 1d a los grupos? porque cada dia debutan grupos nuevos, a veces tmb solistas. La competencia es fuerte y generalmente la gente prefiere gente nueva con nuevos conceptos :v

This may be a random personal observation but possibly boybands haven't been as popular right now because personally I have been really gravitating towards women. I want to hear what they have to say, their experiences, etc. I'm less into male artists right now compared to when I was young and longed for that male validation and perspective. Now I want to hear more music that I relate to from my perspective

I’m surprised that you mentioned SMAP. They were actually a part of a lot of kids’ childhood. I actually grew up with SMAP and other Japanese boy band’s music, especially SMAP’s ‘successors’, Arashi. Johnny’s Entertainment, the company who took care of SMAP isn’t talked about much, but there has been so much scandals from them. You need to dig down in order to find research, because there is so many shit that happened that time. They were one of the first companies to use the trainee system, something that could be popular within the Kpop industry.

you should definitely make a video about stray kids, yes they are a korean boy group but many people don't consider them as kpop, in my opinion they are rising to be the next big boy group after bts, personally i didnt like kpop and didnt like bts's music (no hate just not my taste) but after hearing 1 stray kids song I was so blown away by how good they were, their music is so different, they have used over 40 genre in their discography so far, after releasing God's Menu they created their own genre that is now called the (mala taste), the most important thing is they're heavily self produced, they have 99% control over their music, from producing, arranging, composing, writing, creating choreography, etc.... ( fun fact: the members were handpicked by the leader himself, not the company, which is super rare in the kpop industry ). they're also more popular internationally than in korea, mostly because of usual kpop fans not liking their music and often calling it noise music, and another reason is because they have 2 australian members. so after just 4 years into their career they're already the most streamed kpop boy group after bts, and the 4th overall korean artist, what I'm saying is, I'm interested in your opinion about stray kids.

( Btw jasmine did a video on their case) They're so Talented, they all can sing and have different ranges and they all play instruments, you never see a band of 5 that can sing and play instruments, they're known for their amazing harmonies And also concerning the fandom I've seen a lot of people in their 20s or older so it's not all teens You guys should definitely check them out!

Ironic enough, the K-pop boy band world is also starting to slow down, in 3rd gen we got iconic groups like BTS, Seventeen, EXO, Monsta X, GOT7, and many others but now since a lot of them have such solid fanbase that won’t be going anywhere despite military and new K-pop boy bands. Also 4th gen bgs don’t have much mainstream attention like Girl groups rn. The K-pop world is now over saturated with music and Girl groups are in their prime rn and rely heavily on general public appeal while boy groups are reliant on their fanbase and don’t have much general public appeal( Ex. NCT and Stray Kidz have a huge fanbase, but since they have “noise music” many people don’t like it and don’t Stan them, while girl groups like New jeans, Le sserafim, and IVE, etc. don’t have a big fanbase yet and are reliant on the gp, meaning one bad song can lead you to be trashed on( Itzy, Aespa, StayC, etc.)

Yeah on tik tok there are some boybands but I don't remember their name, one it's band full of gay man and it's super cool and original ; in south america there is CNCO which is a pretty massive group, in Italy there is "il volo" which is a trio of opera singers (don't know of they can be considered boy band ahahah)

I have seen this boyband on tiktok that say they were 1d out if the closet which is quite a distastefull joke but at the same time they didn't lie
