DOOM 3 is the most underrated Doom game of all time! Id Software made Doom 3 as a horror focused Doom reboot in 2004 and polarized audiences on release. The Doom 3 campaign, the Doom 3 Resurrection of Evil expansion, Doom 3 BFG Edition and Doom 3 Lost Mission will all be given a closer look at today. This is the Evolution of DOOM 3. #Doom3 #Doom #IdSoftware

Just a few things I noticed in the video: the textures looked muddy because the graphical options are bugged on windows 10, they can be changed by editing the config.ini file in the game folder. The other thing is that the grabber in RoE can be used to grab small enemies too, which instakills them. This makes trites, forgotten ones and cherubs a non-threat.

I'm not much of a horror fan, but for some odd reason I've played through Doom 3 like 8 times. I'm glad Doom went the more cheesy sci-fi action route in recent years, but 3 has a certain look and feel to it that's so incredibly iconic. Also, I'm glad I'm not the only one who got Campbell and Kelly confused.

Nowadays Doom 3 has another solid point on playing it. It's probably one of the best VR first person shooters. Yes, you'll have to install mod to run it in VR (or install VR port if you have Oculus Quest) but it's no harder than loading custom WAD in ZDoom and it's definitely worth it. Playing Doom 3 in VR is completely different experience but it feels really good and wide customization allows player to set their game in the way they prefer. I adore ability to have flashlight in one hand and gun in another, and using my own body to turn around, being limited only by roomscale protection walls.

@BrickManLive

5:40 Naaah, I disagree. Played the og version of Doom 3 for the first time recently (on veteran) and never ever used the pistol after getting the machine gun. Also there's not much need to save ammo as it literally never ends (if you look around that is). Even for basic zombies it's faster (and more satisfying) to just bonk their head twice with the flashlight. Speaking of weapons, that's also where Doom 3 has failed - all automatic weapons (machine gun, chain gun, plasma rifle) share the same exact function and you just end up always using the one that currently has the most ammo.
@DeadPixel1105
@DeadPixel1105 3 года назад
As a 'veteran' of the original (non-BFG Edition) of Doom 3, I actually like the BFG Edition more than the original version. Although the increase in level brightness, the increase in ammo, and the shoulder-mounted flashlight ruin the atmosphere and intensity that was originally intended, these changes allow you to play Doom 3 is a way that is much more similar to classic Doom, Doom 2016, and Doom Eternal. These changes to Doom 3 allow the game to be played in a much more fast-paced and aggressive manner. id Software basically took all of the aspects of the game that fans say make it feel like "not a good Doom game", and changed them so that it actually does feel like an actual, legit Doom game. In my opinion, anyways. With the original Doom 3, I would creepy through the levels slowly and with hesitation. Very tense. And I'd rely on cover and concealment to avoid damage more than mobility and speed. But in the BFG Edition, I can really blast through the levels and have tons of fun. Sprinting into battles, bunny-hopping all over the place as I fight through a crowd of demons, sprinting from enemy to enemy, blasting them all point-blank. Just going absolutely nuts. I rely more on mobility and speed, instead of cover and concealment - just like every other Doom game. I ask all people who hate the changes to BFG Edition to do something: Sometime in the future, fire up BFG Edition. But pretend like you're playing classic Doom or Doom 2016. Play it in the exact same way. I guarantee you will have a blast. And suddenly, Doom 3 won't feel so out of place in the Doom franchise. It will feel just like every other Doom game. Just pretend it's classic Doom when you play. Just give this a try. It's awesome.
@rodrigof.r.desouza3587
@rodrigof.r.desouza3587 3 года назад
I share this exact same opinion. Also, as far as I remember, basically everything they changed on the BFG Edition were the things that people complained the most when the original version was released back then. That's why I never understood the hate it received, if in the end, of all things, it made the game closer to the classic/expected "Doom experience".

Doom 3 is perhaps my favorite Doom next to Doom 2. So when I first found the BFG edition I was super excited. I bought it right away and loaded it up only to find they ruined the entire flashlight mechanic. There are entire sections of the game designed around the concept of having to switch between the flashlight and the gun, thus ruining a good portion of the game straight out of the gate. That said, I can always go back and play Doom 3 on Steam so it's fine. I just wish I never wasted money on the bfg edition.
@brians1793
@brians1793 Год назад
Talk about a polarizing feature, I get why it really bothered people and didn't seem to make logical sense that weapons wouldn't have flashlights(or it wouldn't be hands-free), I agree it was an important part of the mechanics for creating tension and atmosphere. At the very least they could have had the option to simultaneously hold the flashlight and the pistol, that could have been a good compromise that would have made sense you could fire the pistol with one hand, and in that case the spread suffers. Or hell, you could even throw the flashlight on the ground to illuminate a fixed position. Yet another idea, seeing as how the game is paranormal anyway, the flashlight could always malfunction at key times(iirc I suppose it does do that but haven't played in so long) or there's limited battery and also a chance of the battery totally draining from paranormal activity draining it. Fixing a flashlight wasn't the best idea but I guess it's what a lot of people said they wanted so I can't blame them.

They did mess up the original D3 campaign in BFG edition - some encounters were changed. I remember couple of commandos were swapped for imps and overall monster count went down. And I hated how PDA was redesigned. I also liked how you interacted with computers and panels. It was really immersive and having HUD, weapon indicators, and PDA in similar visual style did build upon it. In BFG edition they remade PDA for wider screens and it wasn't just designed differently - it had a different colour! Overall, I would recommend to play the original D3 and RoE with mods - far better experience.

As I recall in early 2000's Id was working with Microsoft and there were plans on the next Quake game. Even Trent Reznor should have been making a soundtrack and in 2002 he released unofficial demo-like album, which was called "Quake IV unofficial soundtrack" with some unique tracks! But unfortunately for some reason game was scrapped. My point is, if you keep that fact in mind, you will clearly see some echoes of Quake in Doom 3. If you look at the concept artworks, you will see a lot of eldritch lovecraftian tentacled monsters along with techno-themed, cybernetically enhanced foes. It feels like Id were planning to merge Quake 1 and Quake 2 themes in one. A gameplay itself, with limited amount of monsters, levels with objectives and missions feel more Quake-ish rather than Doom-ish. The usage of artifacts to beat the powerful boss somewhat feels like a tribute to Runes in Quake 1. The monsters don't look like stereotypical demons(although these designs were scrapped during Doom 3 development), but instead like something would fit in the Quake game. I mean, look at the hell knight - he is giant pale eyeless humanoid with huge bloody mouth - exactly like a Shambler! Vagary - spiderlike fiend who throws spiky projectiles at you - sounds like a Shalrath from Quake.

action-horror is about riding the line between empowerment and disempowerment, a sort of cyclical dance that ebs and flows. Most modern action horror games employ this dynamic in their tone and pacing, which doom 3 lays the groundwork for. Most modern action-horror games do not, however, employ this philosophy as thoroughly into their game design as Doom 3 did. Every mechanic which empowers the player is designed to be short lived and yet endlessly repeatable, from simpler, obvious elements like the limited sprint meter and the necessity of reloading weapons, up to more complicated inclusions like the separation of weaponry and the flashlight. You're meant to oscillate in Doom 3 between fear and badassery, and the mechanics force you to play that way as well. It stays consistent because both of these things (fear and badassery - horror and action) serve to put pressure on the player, to amp them up and fill them with adrenaline. It's intimate and visceral.

The BFG Edition also nerfs lighting engine and physics as well. In the original dead bodies would interact with each other (dead bodies could stack) and also projectiles like the Plasma gun no longer cast light on the surrounding environment, which really loses some of the atmosphere. Shadows were also dialed back from their fullest setting on the original. My guess is that these changes were made to make absolutely sure the 360/ps3 could hit their framerate targets and they just carried over into the ps4/One/Switch versions. Speaking of the Switch version, it is cool as hell to play this game portably, but wow is the framerate bad. And thanks to the variable resolution, a lot of the time the game is running at a super low res looking very blurry while running sub 30 fps. This is especially bad in ROE and the lost levels. It's not one of Panic Button's better efforts I'm sad to say.

Really enjoying these vids, but holy hell my dude, you find the lost souls annoying because you are fighting them wrong, you DONT have to use hitscan automatics on them, use the shotgun or the plasma rifle, the shotty will kill them in one hit and if not, stun them, the plasma rifle can stun lock them EDIT: its worth mentioning that the console version of BFG has a different source port for doom 1 and 2 based on PRboom+, it has split screen coop and deathmatch.

I kind of wish Id would just make their checkpoint systems optional. At least in Doom3 you could save whenever you want and pick the game up again from there later, but one of my criticisms for the new Doom games is the fact that checkpoints are the only save system and I just don't like that.

Originally doom 4 should have been a COD like but ID decide to follow antoher path.

My memory of Doom 3 is very sketchy at best. I played through it 2-3 times back when it came out along with Resurrection of Evil and that was it. Never went back to it but I did remember enjoying it quite a lot. Think I might have to give it another go soon. One thing I do recall, however, is that I remember thinking that the grabber gun in ROE was basically just a cheap rip off of Half Life 2's gravity gun and could have probably been left out of the expansion entirely.

Still one of my favourite games of all time, and that's not even counting how much I like the look of idtech4 just in general. Shame it was only used for a few games. The controversy I've never really understood is just how vehement people got about that flashlight... sure, the UAC's a little bit gloomy, but I almost never found the game so dark that I actually needed to use it. Even in those few places where it did get pitch-black, most enemies would tend to have some light of their own to aim at. Yeah, yeah, so maybe I do just have the senses of a cat-thing and you guys don't... :) At the very least it means I can somewhat enjoy both versions of the game (even if I prefer the original). Since the biggest change between them is to something I don't really use anyway. It's not like I don't have a few complaints of my own. I have to admit I dislike the base campaign's hell level, but not for the same reasons you gave... throughout a number of maps before it, hell's built up as this massive world where people get lost, can go for days without seeing any sign of life, and where Betruger has a cunning plan to hide the soul cube from you. Once you actually get there, the game gives you what comes down to a series of rooms, flooded with demons to fight, which leads you straight to the thing it was supposedly trying to prevent you from finding. In a game which otherwise takes great pains to stay true to its own lore, this one break from that is pretty darn jarring. One thing BFG edition did that I do like was to add two extra hell levels in the Lost Mission, both of which I think are much better realizations of what Doom 3's hell was originally built up to be. The levels immediately leading up to hell, and all the ones after it, though, have always been my favourite part of the game.

The idea that Doom 3 isn't close to the original Doom is stupid it absolutely is if you look at Doom 3 and doom side by side they are both horror-based they are both meant to be played slow and methodically and they both have the same badass feeling as long as you don't sit there like a Karen and complain about everything the whole time. Doom 3 is literally just modernized Doom that's it the only thing different really is the story. People talk about the original doom and Doom 2 being action action but if you actually look at it it's not it's horror action it's not scary to us anymore but back in the day doom and Doom 2 used to be horrifying but because it's an old game and nobody is scared of it anymore suddenly now it's action action. Doom was never about just blasting demons it was about action and fear if you look at some of the scenery in the original Doom it's kind of freaky but back then you wouldn't want to enter the next room that's exactly what Doom 3 does they're literally the same thing.
@todesziege

Doom 3 arguably strayed a bit further still in the horror direction than the originals, but Doom 2016 went at least as far in the other direction and few seem to mind that. In my view they both carry 50% of Doom's DNA.

@@todesziege I see Doom having two sides both sides should be explored, one side of it is action the other side of it is horror there's nothing wrong with exploring the horror of Doom over the fast paced action. Doom 3 is still fast paced it's just a little slower to amp up tension, but the thing is it's played the exact same way as the original games were when they came out they were played very slow and it was horror based. It really doesn't make sense that people look at Doom 3 and then say horror based bad because they might as well be talking about the past games too if you look at what Doom was trying to be back in the 90s because it was never supposed to be like the modern games.

I really appreciate Doom 3. People like to criticize it for focusing on horror and slowing down the pacing. But refuse to give credit for all the things it did better. Doom 3 has the best art design, monster design, aesthetic and sound design in the series. Take a look at the Imps and Pinky Demons in Doom 2016. They look like jokes. The game's overall aesthetic is just bland. And the weapons don't sound good. Ripping enemies with your bare hands is the only exciting thing in the Doom Reboot which they took from the Brutal Doom mod 🤷

I agree for the most part. But the changes in the bfg edition didn’t really bother me too much. Except for that toxic waist part in roe. But like the flashlight thing, I mean yeah it was cool in the original one but if you really think about it this game takes place in what 2100 something? I mean cmon by then yeah they would have flashlights mounted on there armor or weapons. And doom guy in the original one couldn’t like grab a bunch of flashlights and duck tape and tape them to his weapons or something? That just seems more realistic than having to pull out the flash light every time your in the dark then swapping to a weapon when a monster pops up. And this game is like 80% dark areas. I mean yeah that was cool and it did give the game a little more tension but personally I was ok without it. And roe originally had the flashlight on the pistol. I do agree it would have been nice to have the option. And I didn’t like the auto save in the original bfg edition cause it stops your game and takes so long to save. But thankfully there’s an option to turn it off in the PS4 version. Saving manually doesn’t bother me. In fact I like it better when I can save anywhere I want. It feels more classic. Y’all ever played the first red faction? That game did t have an auto save you had to save manually. Old doom you had to save manually. And about the ammo, think back to the original doom. There was ammo everywhere. Idk bout you but I recall being stocked with ammo at all times. Except for maybe the plasma amo but that’s the only ammo that’s kinda rare in my opinion. So yeah the ammo change didn’t bother me either. Honestly I didn’t really think about it first time I played the bfg edition. And this is coming from a long time doom fan. I played doom 3 when it came out on Xbox. And watched my brothers play it. It scared the shit out of me when I was a kid. But long story short. Or short story long lol the changes in the bfg edition didn’t bother me much. Just wish people would quit whining about the damn flashlight lol. Look at the remake for resident evil 2. You can have the flashlight out with every weapon. And that’s still a tense game. But hey good video man. Enjoyed it

The flashlight issue is kind of a moot point. It's not a stretch to think at the very least, a fucking space marine would be on the lookout for a roll of duct tape so fasten his flashlight somewhere. With that said it does change the vibe of the game somewhat but not enough to ruin it. The beam of a flashlight is a scary thing to look through, no matter where the thing is attached or not.

In terms of the story I feel like they should have taken a leaf out of Half Life's book and replaced all the cut scenes with scripted sequences and set pieces. Agreed -- I think it would have been more fitting for the atmosphere they were going for. It is really a bit odd they didn't go in this direction since they went quite all-in on immersion elsewhere, with the interactive computer terminals and on-weapon ammo counters etc. Still, I'd rather replay Doom 3 than Half-Life 2 when it comes to the gameplay.

Honestly, I LIKE this video, but Civvie did it better, and he did have better Palpatine jokes, too. Still, I DO like this video. Get a Quest 2 and try Doom 3 in VR. I know a guy who's porting a load of classic FPS titles using source ports and he's editing the code so the ports can be run natively on Oculus Quest so you wouldn't have to tether yourself to a computer. All you really need is the original game files. The reason he doesn't get C&D's over his ports is because he ports source port engines, not the games themselves. He's done all the Doom games up to Doom 3, Half-Life 1, Quake 1 & 2, and Return to Castle Wolfenstein as well as just recently adding support for Wolfenstein 3D. And all these engines allow mods to run. It's SICK AS FUCK.
