Jabba the Hutt is a character that was in some of George Lucas's earliest drafts of Star Wars. But his design has changed drastically over the years, and today that's what I want to talk about! The other versions of Jabba the Hutt we almost got to see on screen.

I mean he has the structure of a gigantic bean bag with arms. In fact, I had a gigantic bean bag when I was a kid that was filled with foam instead of beans, and I always imagined if Jabba wasn't slimy with a lizard like texture that he would be the kind of thing you could just chill on its belly kind of like how the little girl lays on Totoro.

Ever since I was a kid and RotJ was the first movie I watched in the theater, I have wanted to own the original Jabba puppet. If you ask me the guy who got paid to row Jabba's tail had the best job in all of Star Wars. Also some of the unused maquettes that were made during the design process were great too.

Diego Talking about Jabba just makes me hope he goes to Celebration to promote Andor! He is hilarious! And props to the puppeteers havign to make jabba move. I used to have nightmares of Jabba as a kid cause he was so creepy and gross how quickly he ate creatures without chewing. I dreamt I was gonna get eaten by him but I loved episode 6 so much because of the Battle on Jabbas sail barge so much as a kid.

the special edition version of the scene has always been interesting, the way it was shot, cut, then edited years later to better fit what had been made in its absence, it’s a really interesting story
@crithitjace
@crithitjace 2 года назад
I have to agree with that. While a lot of people see it as excess and George Lucas meddling with the film, I see it as integral to building Han's character as an outlaw and to show the reason why he was frozen in carbonite and taken away by Fett in Empire Strikes Back.
@Vinny792
@Vinny792 2 года назад
@Lefty Gurl The development and evolution of that scene being created is certainly an interesting story in it of itself. But the actual scene is mostly unnecessary and redundant to the story. All the story beats that are talked about within the scene were already explained in the Han and Greedo scene. It also takes away the mystery of who Jabba is before seeing him in Return of the Jedi as well as seeing the Millenium Falcon for the first time. Which is a mystery that’s worth retaining. On a technical level, it’s very cool seeing Jabba the Hut being out and about slithering on the ground away from lying on the bed in his palace. But at the same time when Han walks behind Jabba and steps on his tail, there’s artificial motion blurring of Han moving up and down that has not aged particularly well. There’s also a continuity error in the editing of shots in which Chewie is on screen holding his weapon and making sure Han’s conversation doesn’t go south. The exact spot where Chewie is standing changes from two different shots.

I actually came up with a slight redesign for the Hutt species, where during their youth they gain long snake-like bodies, capable of great feats, and they only become giant slugs when they're older. They rise to power during their prime, then exploit that power when they're older.

2:59 Even before the Special Editions, there was already information included in this scene that was taken originally from the docking bay Jabba scene. In fact, the audio of Harrison Ford speaking the lines “Even I get boarded sometimes. You think I had a choice?” are lifted directly from the deleted docking bay scene and inserted into the Han and Greedo scene. So it’s all the more redundant for the audience when watching the Jabba scene in the Special Editions of A New Hope.

Instead of CGI Jabba they should have gotten the original stand in to record new dialogue to make his character an enforcer sent on behalf of Jabba and they should have changed the clothes on the rodians or replace them with new characters.

Probably ALL species have a history of calling "decent" individuals shining examples of their species. We have words like "humanitarian" and "humane" and Han’s phrase. You might imagine Admiral Ackbar saying to Leia, "Princess, you are a wonderful Mon Calamari" as a way to honor her. In Han’s case it seems to be passive aggressive because, it technically is an honoring phrase, but Hutts consider themselves superior to humans.

@@joncarroll2040 The differences between the comic adaptation and the film caused me a lot of confusion when the first film finally hit HBO or whatever channel it was, since I'd only seen the film once or twice before ESB came out, but had read the comicbook so many times. I was like "where did This Scene go? Where is Jabba? What happened to the other scenes with Biggs?" I had no concept at the time of how stuff could be cut out of a film, it was just not something that had occurred to me yet.

I once heard from this really old star wars fan an IG comics nerd from the inception of the series that there was a comic where we learned via a flashback that Anakin and Vader were separate people and we got to see this including Vader's fall to dark, now was this real or was he just BSing me?
@Quirderph

I don't think it's quite true, though there was one comic where Luke meets someone who once met Obi-Wan, Darth Vader and "the man who carried that lightsaber" (obviously meant to be Luke's father.) Years later, an EU writer actually fixed this continuity flub that explaining that the third guy was actually another jedi who had borrowed Anakin's lightsaber because of reasons.
