A big issue with compilations like this, at least for me, is it’s nearly impossible to sum a year up with just one song as far as music evolution goes

Fun fact about Evanescence. The producers/record label wanted them to have a rapper in the band, but the band didn't want that and fought hard against that decision. When you listen to all other songs by Evanescence, there's no rap verses at all. And that's great that they're a band that didn't try to copy what was popular at the time.
@SavedByGrace_CitizenEmperorユウ
Yes, exactly. I must say I like the raps on "Bring me to life" but I also get why the band was against it. Compromising for a song to get the commercial push isn't too bad / actually very clever. Still I think Evanescence isn't too far removed from Linkin Park. Melodies and metal mixed together, so there's pop appeal but also really heavy dark parts. Probably the reason why I liked and still like both bands from their early years. I'm not into heavy metal but great singing, emotions, beautiful touching melodies, personal lyrics, punching guitars combined with enough pop appeal is something I really can enjoy a lot.

@@Bat_Fiend. You're welcome. Resident Evanescence and Linkin Park fan, so I like knowing facts like this. I enjoy all versions of Bring Me to Life. If you haven't yet, check out the cover performed by JRock band called Wagakiband, also featuring Amy Lee. It hits different with the instrumentalization used, since the band uses traditional Japanese instruments along with the regular instruments you'd expect from any rock band.

This, 100%. Evanescence agreed to do 1 song with this male rap/rock singer. They originally said no, and walked away from their contract. The label came back saying if they just did the one, which was for a soundtrack, then they would not ask for a male singer again.

Not to mention the absolute lack of Beyonce in the 2000s, while metal is def more my jam I listen to literally everything and MOST of these songs certainly weren't defining for their time when we got into the more modern era. Tbh most of these choices seem like they were just picked by an angsty teenager that slowly made their transition from metal to rap, whoever made this is some early-mid twenties dude for SURE. Edit: Also One Direction, Bieber and Jonas Brothers? Come on man, those were def influential in the mid to late 2000s.

Yeah. Have to agree that the person making this compilation had a huge metal/rock bias. They should also have looked more into early classical music (Purcell for instance), both for harpsichord/pianofortes as well as lute based songs. I consider the latter the direct precursor to a lot of the folk acts in more modern times. "Fine knacks for ladies" by John Dowland is an excellent example of that kind of stuff. The vocals there is somewhat different to modern day vocals, but... I would also have looked at the more synth heavy parts of the 80s and the more r'n'b influenced stuff of modern times... I also lament the lack of "regular" folk music in the compilation...

I really feel like this suffers from showing old music only as those pieces being written for the church or for the king. There were all kinds of ballads and folk tunes going on during that time. There were also periods of time where the news for an area were incorporated into folk tunes. Like, I understand why the major pieces were included, but its those odd little folk songs and bar ballads that you can really trace modern music to. It's also incredibly eurocentric, but even if you wanted to stay within Europe, you're missing the part of musical culture that actually informed pop . It didn't suddenly appear out of nowhere one day, it was there all along.
@monsev.arellano9125
@monsev.arellano9125 2 года назад
Couldn't agree more. It's very eurocentric and I also noticed discrepancies between the eras of music. I thought it wasn't a good representation of how music has evolved. There is no way we just went from chants to elaborate orchestras all of a sudden lol
@Essex626
@Essex626 2 года назад
Thing is, folk music was written down a lot less than the music of the church. So the songs and tunes didn't survive as well until the baroque era.
@cassieprofitt7560
@cassieprofitt7560 2 года назад
@@Essex626 That's fair, the older it is the harder it is to tell. But from what scraps of lyrics we do have, a few rough approximations could be added (Like, no one knows how the bone flutes were played, but they did an approximation). And certainly some of those folk songs were noted in detail before the 1900s, where this compilation started to show any lyrical music other than chants.

Towards the end, there felt like there was definitely some personal bias effecting the list. Some great artists were completely ignored. Some honourable mentions below I think would be better than the list in the video for 2007 - 2021: [2007] (Rhianna - Umbrella) [2008] (Beyoncé - Halo) (Katy Perry - I kissed a girl) [2009] (Owl City - Fireflies) (Jay Z ft Alicia Keys - Empire State of Mind) [2010] (Eminem - Not Afraid) (Rhianna - Only Girl) (Katy Perry - California Gurls) [2011] (Lady Gaga - Born this way) (Gym Class Heroes ft Adam Levine - Stereo Hearts) [2012] * (Carly Rae Jepsen - Call me maybe) [2013] * (Pharrell Williams - Happy) (Miley Cyrus - Wrecking Ball) (Lorde - Royals) (1 Direction - One way or Another) (One Republic - Counting Stars) [2014] * (Taylor Swift - Blank Space) (Iggy Azalea ft Charlie XCX - Fancy) (Mark Ronson ft Bruno Mars - Uptown Funk) (Katy Perry - Dark Horse) (Jessie J ft Ariana Grande and Nicki Minaj - bang bang) [2015] (Wiz Khalifa x Charlie Puth - See You Again) (Shawn Mendes - Stitches) [2017] (Luis Fonsi x Daddy Yankee - Despacito) (Ed Sheeran - Shape of You) (Charlie Puth - Attention) [2018] * (Post Malone - Rockstar) (Cardi B ft Bad Bunny and J Balvin - I like it) (Camilla Cabello - Havana) [2019] (Lil Nas X - Old Town Road) (Billie Eilish - Bad Guy) (Shawn Mendes and Camilla Cabello - Señorita) [2020] * (BTS - Dynamite) (Cardi B - WAP) (Dua Lipa - don't start now) [2021] (The Kid Laroi - Stay) (Olivia Rodrigo - Driver's License) If you believe I've missed any, feel free to reply. I've probably introduced my own personal bias into this list too. * note, I do believe the list had some good mentions like Avicii in 2013 and The Weeknd in 2020.

Once you start to get into music from today, the sound to represent all of our music starts to become arbitrary. There's so many different genres, artists, and sounds to really get a good grasp on our "style" of today. You can get stuff from people like taylor swift, then go all the way to the other end of the spectrum to people like The Hu and have just as amazing a sound. It'd be interesting to have a bigger mesh of genres though (like The Hu are Mongolian throat singers but in the division of rock too). If you want a great female lead singer metal band, try Otep. They're actually really good, and the singer is awesome with her vocals. Zero is my favorite song by them, as she makes it such a slap in the face with insults!

I mean... I can't really say I think this is the Evolution of Music. Hardly any female artists represented, Extremely US/Eurocentric and the historical music 1600-1900 mostly had classical orchestral music and literally no folk music of any kind, you know the kind of music everyday people were playing of which there are several bands out there recreating it now. And for anything before 1600 we have several examples of amplified historical music bands like Heilung etc who does bronze age music and I'm sure there are other examples out there around the rest of the world. I mean ffs there are genuine tribal african music that has hardly changed for centuries that has sick beats!

@MaggaraMarine
@MaggaraMarine Год назад
I think it's a bit strange to complain about the "Eurocentricism" of the video when it wasn't even a particularly good representation of that music. As they pointed out, the person who made the list obviously had a bias towards rock/metal. (I mean, for example the 70s is missing disco, funk, reggae, prog, punk rock, early electronic music... Most of this list is just classic rock. The 80s is missing at least new wave, glam metal, early hip hop, and a good representation of synth pop. If the video isn't even going to talk about these styles, then demanding it to talk about the music of other cultures is way too much to ask. Instead of listing all of the classic rock hits of the different decades, it could have explored a lot of different styles and given a better representation of how the different decades sounded like.) Another thing to point out would be their focus on music after the mid-1960s - as if that's when "real music" began and all of the evolution happened, and almost every single year needs its own hit song, whereas before that it was only a couple of songs per decade (and before the 20th century, it skipped many decades, as if nothing happened between 1810 and 1850, even though that's the beginning of the romantic period). There are so many issues with the list that I feel that complaining about its "Eurocentricism" is kind of missing the mark. It isn't even a particularly good representation of Western music, so even if the name was changed to "the evolution of Western music", it still wouldn't be a great list. Generally speaking, I think the list would have been better if it had only focused on Western music written after 1950. This would have made it possible to include more examples from different styles. Or maybe it could even have only focused on rock music (because that's obviously the style the person who made the list is most familiar with). Because now the list kind of lacks focus. It feels like it moves too fast in the beginning, and too slow in the end (while being too biased towards one style).

So as far as I know August is actually right about "Bring me to life" by Evanescence. They originally didn't have a rapper in the song but their label pushed hard to do it because of Linkin Park's success at the time. They ended up agreeing but worked 1 on 1 with their producer to make sure the song still held on to the original message which was actually pretty deep.
