CORRECTION: Katas is the name of the Nameless Namekian's FATHER instead of the Nameless Namekian's actual name. Thank you for those out there who clarified it. :)
I always liked that Piccolo fully starts to change after fulfilling his father's wish. He kills Goku and he is now free to become his own man instead of a direct copy of his predecessor. After all, Piccolo promised to kill Goku, not to make sure he stayed dead. Which makes Piccolo one of the few Dragon Ball villains to actually achieve his evil ambition.
Kokujolong I know and it's funny cause he didint even want to kill at that moment I feel like it was just a side bonus for killing raditz, but if he had a choice I think would have wanted a fair fight
+KingRyan 1995 But that's also the beauty of it. In achieving his goal, Piccolo realized that achieving his goal wasn't what he wanted. At least not how it went down.
You are both right. Piccolo gets what he wanted, just not the way he wanted it and finds no lasting satisfaction in it. And even if he did, Piccolo has to worry about the next big threat immediately afterwards. He has no time to try and take pride in what he did or to take over the world. If he killed Goku in a big dramatic fight, maybe things would be different. But Goku was fine with it and he spends a year protecting the son of the man who killed his father/past-life.
I like this as I think it gives him more credit for growth than the merge with Nail. I thnk MasakoX gave that a little too much credit. I believe the connection to his homeworld Nail gave him made his figh with Freeza more personal to him and established a closer relationship with Dende when there wasn't really time to establish one, but he was still going to protect Gohan.
@Carl Rood Agreed. The merge with Nail matters, but as I've always seen it, Piccolo's tale is how even someone widely considered to be evil incarnate can in fact, find his own redemption. And it is through that journey that Kami is able to come to terms with Piccolo (and vice versa), and Kami is able to realize his mistake in trying to simply jettison all his darkness instead of understanding it. The flip-side to this is that it also means the previous Guardian of Earth was correct in rejecting merged Kami as immature, and Goku was ultimately correct in refusing to kill Piccolo. If you want to get super deep with this, it can also mean that Goku understands Kami better than Kami.
Dragonball: Son Goku kills Piccolo Daima-o by blasting a hole through him. He then births Piccolo, a father-less child. Dragonball Z: Piccolo kills Son Goku by blasting a hole through him. Takes his son, so he won't be a father-less child. Between Piccolo's compassion and Vegeta's character development, pretty much all the supporting characters in Dragonball are more interesting than Son Goku.
That's what makes db great, you have all these complexed developed characters to support the lead character who's utter bluntness drives the action and plot of the show itself...it's genius really
goku did give piccolo jr. a senzu after their fight to the death...say what you will but the reason goku killed piccolo was obvious...his son wasnt as evil so he let him live ..goku showed compassion first
Trubbish DBS just nerfed the "violence". There are 2Scenes in DBS where Piccolos Arm was punched out and both of them looked like cutting of paper. It looked 2dimensional with no violence, just compare it to Nappa punching of Tiens Arm xD
I really hope he has moments to shine in this arc. He's been a long-time favorite character of mine, and seeing him training with Gohan and helping him tap into his old strength was something of a relief to me. Maybe, this time, he won't be relegated to being Mr. Info-dump or get his shit slapped around for the ten thousanth time!
Super is about God power. Piccolo is out of his league there. Also seeing the ending they made it will go beyond the current arc fast in time perspective to probably focus more on the kid sayins. Leaving little room for others. I am surprised Krilin and the droids get screen time.
I had never considered it until just now, but in addition to being evil incarnate, Piccolo Daimao was a father to several children with whom he had an intimate bond. It makes sense for Piccolo (Ma Junior) to be a better father than Goku, who had never known his own cold and ostracizing father.
C Vox i wanna see bardock meet his son....i know the film is not canon buuut... if that's the way it went then who is to say that last moment with frieza might have been a future sighting
My fav Piccolo moments: -emo flashback death speech in the ocean dub saiyan saga -when he meets/saves Gohan on Namek -when he pulls a Batman and confronts imperfect Cell -when he pulls a Batman and saves Gohan in the Broly movie -when he calls Goku out for being a deadbeat ass dad and making Gohan fight -every time he blushes/gets flustered/loses his damn mind when dealing with Gotenks' antics in the Buu saga -when he resuscitated Gohan after getting rekt by Frieza -literally any and every scene about him and Pan-chan in Super
For all the Vegeta and Trunks fanboys, my favorite character is and always will be Piccolo- I'm actually kind of disappointed that he didn't get the Majin treatment and Vegeta got it instead, but... maybe that's for the best. You pointed out, I think, why I like Piccolo so much, and why the Majin shtick wouldn't stick with him: he's the most fully-realized character in Dragonball. His strength rivals the saiyans, he has a complex backstory, but he's above things like pride or arrogance, and accepts when he has feelings of compassion for others, rather than try and act aloof and detached, as if caring about someone was beneath him. Now, if Super would just do him a solid and actually make him comparable to Goku and Vegeta. Or hell, just give him and Vegeta a fight where Piccolo gives the Prince of All Saiyans a run for his money XP
Piccolo is much more a warrior-monk. While goku and vegeta are straight up warriors. Piccolo meditates a lot as well. And is a cunning person. Probably the highest IQ of the entire bunch. It is likely why he and Gohan relate so much since both are very inteligent and the mix works well on screen/paper. Piccolo is able to punch above his weight due to his vast experience and intelligence. Shown when fighting Frost.
I feel like the Frost fight was kind of a "gray" area. Frost, obviously, was Universe 6's counterpart to Frieza. Unlike Frieza, he had been around much longer, so he might have gotten a LITTLE stronger, but we all know that Frieza's power was only equivalent to a base Super Saiyain, which Piccolo had surpassed a LONG time ago. His current strength puts him above Super Saiyan 2, which means he MAY actually be as strong as Super Saiyan 3, right now. This, of course, may be a different matter in the manga, as Frost -unlike in the anime- was more serious and straight laced, not "affably evil" like he was in the anime. I think a good barometer for Piccolo right now would be if he fought Frost in a rematch, but Frost had acquired his "golden" form by the time this new tournament started. I expect Piccolo would have more than a bit of trouble with this, but would ultimately like to see him best Frost. We'll have to see how that goes, though.
at equal power levels, piccolo would beat vegetas ass. theyre both smart and cunning, both fierce with lots of tehniques and experience. BUT...vegeta is way too predictable to someone like piccolo who knows him well and can get under his skin. it would be very close at first, but then vegeta would slowly unravel. just look at gohans fights with super buu: with piccolos brain, he used masterful psychology to exploit gohans insecurities and weaknesses, staying 1 step ahead the whole time.
I think one of the most interesting ways to tell how Piccolo Jr. specifically has changed is by looking at his first appearance at the end of DB and early Z and comparing him visually to how he looks at about Namek-upwards. He looked noticeably more Demon-like with pointed eyes and an evil grimace, but as time went on it softened into something stoic, yet caring. It's a nice detail to compare throughout the series.
The way Piccolo changed made me happy, Goku can just go eat muffins and bacon, Piccolo takes the spot as one of the best father figures in dragon ball.
The one moment that always stuck with me was this... Piccolo is watching Gohan sleep and realizes he's developing feelings for him. He goes to touch Gohan's head, but hesitates. He was afraid to let himself feel anything outside of why he was created.
I don't think even Piccolo realizes this, but the love he developped for Gohan, is really King Piccolo caring for his son Piccolo Jr. that he never got to meet.
Piccolo is one of the best developed characters in all of Dragon Ball. I started with Z and then eventually watched the first series mostly because I wanted to know about King Piccolo and his son. Seeing what King Piccolo was like and then what Piccolo Jr was like before he changed was pretty eye opening. They really did a good job of developing him along his path from evil to good.
Easily best character in the series and one of my all time favorites since I was 8 years old. Oddly enough was only able to learn more of King Piccolo's arc when Dragon Ball aired on Toonami AFTER watching the majority of Z. But even watching those events out of order, it is still an amazing arc and I can understand why Toriyama enjoyed it so much (it really came through in the storytelling). And even though people may argue that Piccolo may not be as strong as Goku or Vegeta right now, he emulates a type of strength that I find incredibly admirable. Pragmatic yet kind. Thank you for doing this video Masako and Happy Birthday Piccolo!!! ^_^
Dude you were made to make videos. TFS is awesome and really influencal and now you've made your own channel you've become one of my favorite (dragon ball) youtubers real quick... keep grinding bro
Piccolo is both a fantastic villain and a great hero, and honestly, I find that his redemption was executed far more convincingly than Vegeta's. I also feel Piccolo was a better rival for Goku than Vegeta, I like the similarities and contrast between them better. Happy belated birthday Piccolo!
The whole father - son/teacher - student relationship between piccolo and gohan is one of the best thing that came out of dbz, piccolo helped gohan to control his abilities and having him face his own fears while gohan's kindness affected piccolo so much to the point of turning into a good (that and him fusing with both kami and nail) and his selfless sacrifice in the sayian arc had pretty much a huge impact on the series which's pretty much well done. Also i love episode 88 of dbs where they portrayed both piccolo and gohan and there relationship which they pretty much nailed it!
Just something I've wanted to say since I started following you, thank you. I don't often follow fan pages for series, many times those running them are often presumptuous and attack others in the fandom for sharing rumors or incorrect information. A little of a year ago I remember watching a video done by such over the 'Evil Goku' rumor that was about. Said person also called anyone who believed such a thing or that Future Trunks would return basically idiots and blights on the fandom. One of my favorite things about anything are people speculating and having a good time coming up with scenarios that could/would turn the franchise on it's head. I appreciate the fact that you don't address rumors and such in that manner, but instead embrace the ideas as "What if?" or just pure fan fun discussion.
piccolo's my favourite character. and you might not believe this but his most recent training with gohan is my favourite moment of his. second to that islight grenade against imperfect cell, that was badass.
I used to ask about using Boss Rabbit against the Saiyans, against Cell, and against Majin Buu but then I remembered that the moon got blown up a time or two and didn't remember Goku ever bringing him back down from it first.
Back in the day, Piccolo used to be my little brother's favorite. Today, he's my favorite as well. His design, his evolution, his abilities. All this stuff makes him so appealing to me. :)
Piccolo would be the perfect man. He has no penis, so his pleasure doesn't matter and he can stretch any part of his body, if you know what I mean (wink).
AH, remember when Piccolo was the demonic king of all of Earth trapped inside a rice cooker; Now he is a Extraterrestrial babysitter. I think I might prefer DB Piccolo over DBZ lol
Some of my favorite Piccolo moments are when he fought Cell (my favorite fight in DBZ), when he burned Neiz to a charred mass in the Cooler movie (because it showed that he wasn't above doing something incredibly brutal to an enemy), and when he fused with Kami. That was neat, when Kami told Mr. Popo that Piccolo had changed.
Vamqir1 I think maybe Dende or another Dragon race Namekian would take over. I think. Like what happened with Kami. I know you're asking MasakoX. But I just wanna say what would happen. Or Piccolo could die.
Piccolo is hands down my favorite Dragonball character. His arc was so interesting and thanks to his training both on his own and teaching other characters in the show as well as his fusions with Nail and Kame, he remains perhaps the most powerful Non Saiyan character in Dragonball.
Expergamez used to be my favourite db RU-vidr. Then I stumbled across your channel. I'm glad I did! As for favourite moments? His sacrifice for Gohan and joining up with Kami to be himself once more.
Masako.... I freaking love your in depth character studies.... Keep them regular! Please consider doing a video analysing the evolution of Goku and vegetas relationship
The one awesome moment for Piccolo that comes to my mind is the power build up vs 17, it's so unreal and on par with Sean Schemel's SS3 Goku transformation scream... And so with voice actor Scott McNeil at the helm, THIS to me is as Sean Schemel is to Goku, which is fitting, considering their history!
I want to hug you MasaloX! Piccolo is by far my favorite character of all media, and he doesn't get the spotlight enough-mainly because the wide spread of Z before the original. (Seriously the two Piccolo arches are dark!) The absolute HUGE redemption arch(circle?) he goes through, and the confusing history and links to Kami is just epic, and I thank you for covering it so well! Piccolo's path, Past, and connections to others, like Goku and Gohan is what makes him the best in. my eyes. He has gone from mass destroyer, to rabid revenger, to all the way to trusted friend and protector. It's great that he has such strong ties now, but I have to admit, I love it when a little bit of the old evil comes through in a smirk or the brutality of his full out fighting style. Dispite his past, the other characters look to him for plans, and what to do. This is huge for any of them that were there for the start. It shows how far he has come too. I really wish his past would be properly revisited at some point, in some way, in Super, but short of a family reunion in Hell, or going into the Demon Relm, I don't see it happening. Still Happy birthday to the character that showed even the worst among us, can become the best (also for giving us a reason to celebrate this day other then the revival of every one who died by Piccolo Senior's hand/order, and that we are not all fleeing from the city destroying lotto)!
Piccolo has always been a favorite character of mine. Though my favorite moments for him include the manga's version of when he took Gohan. Piccolo: I'm taking the boy with me. Krillin: I know! You're gonna eat him! Piccolo: I AM NOT! Piccolo: -After throwing Gohan at that plateau, thinking to himself- Find the power quickly, boy. Or turn to jelly against those rocks. Also, a thing that's worth noting! In the manga at least, Kami makes note of the fact that Piccolo has changed between Dragonball and Dragonball Z as well, when King Yemma says that Raditz was sent straight to Hell. He ruminates on the fact that Piccolo's 'Crude, cunning violence' is no longer there... and we also get a hint that he is something other than a demon when Kami also considers the fact that in Dragonball according to him, someone killed by a demon CAN'T go to the afterlife and their soul spends eternity wandering. Just the fact that Raditz went to hell already meant something had changed about Piccolo.
Piccolo has been my hero for the last 18 years. He is my inspiration to stay strong in the toughest of times and use my brain to think of the best possible way out. To think logically as well as creatively. His quote "it's a lot less scary to just face your fears than to not face them at all" has been the biggest influence on my decision making when i'm scared things might not work, because my anxiety makes me think it won't. He's influenced my artwork as an artist. I would not have become the artist I am today without putting the most effort into perfecting my drawings of him, which lead to drawing other characters, as well as my own. You can see his influence in many of my characters. Piccolo has opened my eyes to gender and sexuality. He's taught me kindness, compassion, loyalty, honor, strength, love, and so so many other valuable lessons. He's just the most unique character in all of anime, and no one can compare.
I also think the big reason why Piccolo had a change of heart is because he ACTUALLY killed Goku and got his revenge. And felt empty about it. Then training Gohan gave him meaning.
What I have always wondered is if Piccolo ever tried to locate his foster parents that he had for a short while or if they ever went looking for him after he had a hissy fit and burned their house down? There had to have been some kind compassion in those folks to have taken him in as an egg and cared for him after he hatched.
This was a nice watch, since Piccolo was by far my favorite character. I wish he'd gotten a bit more power for the Super tournament arc, but watching him fight with Gohan and be strategizing and tactical while helping Gohan coordinate the actual team players was kindof great.
Hey Masako, I'd love an episode that goes over all the various forms of the Dragon Balls (Earth, Black Star, Namekian, Super, and any others I'm forgetting)!
Piccolo has always been my favorite character since I started the DBZ manga. Be it in his design, personality, abilities, or character arc, I consistently found him to be a joy to have on the page. This is why I will lose every ounce of investment in Super if he is replaced on the universe 7 team in favor of Freeza.
I love how bad of a father Goku was to Gohan. I always think of Goku as this paragon and it's so cool to see that this actual short coming of Goku is handled so subtly. It might be a stretch to say that Goku failed as a father but the fact is that there was some slack to be picked up and it was picked up by piccolo.
All of this and more is why Piccolo is my (2nd) favorite. I know it gets old for some people, but his dynamic with Gohan never gets old for me and I will watch Piccolo bail him out 1000 times.
Piccolo was my first favorite character when I first started watching DBZ back in 1997. I came in on the 3rd episode, and I was HOOKED. I cried when he died. Vegeta became my favorite shortly after and hasn't changed since. Later I realized they're not that different story wise. They both changed over time. Piccolo will always hold a special place in my DB fangirl heart.
I loved the part in the cell saga where Piccolo tells Goku that Gohan doesn't like fighting and that he's basically a bad father for just standing there, doing nothing.
You know at first Toriyama was going to have Piccolo be controlled by Babidi instead of Vegeta to spark up that old rivalry. The idea soon came back in Dragonball Heroes.
Piccolo would not have worked since there is no frustration with him up till that point. While Vegeta did. Vegeta really was the better choice there. Specially how he went out in his final attack on buu was epic.
Piccolo the only character that some how is both popular and underrated at the same time, yet he will always be one of the most important as well as influential characters in the franchise, happy b-day big green!.
I kinda like how Tenkaichi 3 had Piccolo split into two characters, one representing him from the start of Z and one representing him at the end of Z. While there's literally no difference in the clothing obviously, you do get some idea of how far he's come with the interactions each version has with specific other fighters.
not to mention that time when piccolo cut babadi in half and was incredibly pissed at babadi for unleashing buu and trying to destroy the planet. he even said angrily "you need to be exterminated!" and he was about to blast babadi into smithereens until buu came back.
I quite like Piccolo. Perhaps it was that 5-year time skip between OG _Dragon Ball_ and _Z_ that resulted in him becoming wiser and smarter as a fighter. Fusing with Kami during the Android Saga probably helped too.
Yo! Don't really comment on RU-vid, but I wanted to thank you, MasakoX, for giving me another reason to love Piccolo. He and I share the same birthday. I turn twenty tomorrow. Yeah, he's a bit older than me, but this is still pretty awesome!
I still look back at the episode where piccolo gets his driver's license funny episode, and also GT when he says good bye to Gohan and of course when Goku gives him the senzu bean on DB
