The Execution Of Ernst Röhm - The Head Of Hitler's Brownshirts 

One of the most ruthless ways that Adolf Hitler enforced his power was by issuing purges of those who he considered a threat. One of the most significant purges was the Night of the Long Knives, and this saw hundreds of members of the SA (Hitler's brownshirts) executed included one of his own best friends Ernst Röhm. Röhm was a close associate of the Dictator, and he was also the Head of the SA, and there was a huge worry that he became too powerful.
The SA, Röhm's forces were incredibly loyal to him and many believed that they would one day replace the army within Germany. But because of the threat of the group and Röhm's power, he was arrested and he was given a choice which only would have ended in his death.
