The Expanse: Admiral Winston Duarte explained. Duarte's plans for Laconia and the protomolecule in Season 6. Please subscribe! 👉 bit.ly/PetePeppers
Winston Duarte was a career Navy officer on Mars before the Free Navy conflict. His name first showed up at the end of season 4 of the show after Bobbie had been investigating theft of Martian military tech. At the end of season 5 we heard him referred to as Admiral Duarte and found out he was the leader of the Martian Breakaway Fleet. He helped arm the Free Navy, and used them as a distraction to take a third of the MCRN's ships to Laconia.
In season 6 we meet him on Laconia after one his soldiers kills Xan in an accident. He talks to Cara and explains his grief over losing the dream of Mars and says he wants it to be a sacrifice so it still means something. In the final season we also learn that the orbital platforms above Laconia are an important part of his plans, and that's why he traded ships for the Protomolecule sample.
After Cara's little brother Xan dies in an accident she meets Winston Duarte. She had encountered some strange creatures in the woods near her house, and noticed that reanimated a bird that had died. She decides to enlist their help to bring her brother back, and when her parents find out they're terrified. Cara leaves home with her brother who is no longer dead, but noticeably changed. It's implied that she will die of starvation and expects that they'll bring her back as well.

Honestly, as far as a major cataclysm I found the fact that Mars had to grapple with its population leaving for the ring much more dramatic and compelling than the Free Navy's attack on Earth. For a guy who's been onscreen for a total of about three minutes this season, I feel like they've done a superb job of introducing him. In his first scene with Cara, "No one could stop us. So instead, someone has to keep us safe, or at least try. I don't know if I still can, and if I can't... nothing matters then anyway." Kind of a lot to unload on a kid who just lost her brother. But I think that itself says a lot about Duarte - even at this young age, he's a little disconnected from the people around him. Also, that while Duarte isn't in any simple sense a selfish person, and does actually care about humanity, he still somehow brings his thoughts looping back to his own concerns even when it's inappropriate to the situation - it's a kind of selfish selflessness which is I think really realistic to how a lot of ideologues behave. I really liked how a hint of sheer madness and barely constrained glee was visible on Duarte's face every time we saw him in the final episode - because he was either alone or speaking to people who didn't matter because they were disposable pawns he sent to die, and we see more of his real personality in those moments. Honestly, even knowing it was coming, I was really taken aback by how utterly blunt and cold he was telling Marco he doesn't matter. I get the feeling he wanted to show off just that one time. And his 'Oyadeng Beltalowda' comment, right at the end, showed a nice level of usually hidden contempt for Belters. Like, maybe he is a bit of a bigot beneath all his grand ideas about unifying humanity.
@eds1942
@eds1942 2 года назад
I would’ve loved to see that sink into Marco for a couple of seconds. “You were a useful distraction. But I’ve got gods to kill.” And Marco’s ego cracks a bit.
@robfalgiano
@robfalgiano 2 года назад
Wow, nicely done. You kind of captured it all. I was immediately struck by his conversation with Cara too. They played it so well. He should be consoling her in a completely adult way but instead she ends up consoling him because what he’s talking about goes over her head in her innocence. So yeah, he’s dangerously detached from humanity, but we only get the slightest glimpse there. Good stuff. It would be very cool to see the show renewed to finish the books but they set it up well enough to be imagined without that happening too.

Since they made the effort to actually introduce Duarte in person (and thus a new actor) in the second half of the extra short final season of The Expanse, I'm still crossing my fingers for a soon to be announced spin-off series centered on Duarte and Laconia to fill the 30-year gap (or at least some of it) in the books. It could tell the story of Laconia's rise and the strides made in understanding and employing the alien technology found in the Laconia system. That would pay off the late introduction of the Duarte actor and not just leave him with only about 3 minutes of total screen time.

The writers did such a GREAT JOB in fleshing out Admiral Duarte in such a short amount of screen time. I really do hope we can get more seasons to complete the story of The Expanse, but if worse comes to worse, there are options. One is obviously the books, but there are other forms of entertainment that can help. They could make an animation/anime series which can cut costs on real physical sets/studio production values since all the funding goes to Animators, Sound/Music, and when it comes to voice acting, the original crew can still participate despite the time skip and lack of make up work. They can potentially take risk and make a video game :D For example, Star Trek Online continued the story after Voyager and Nemesis and I have to say they did a pretty good job fleshing out many Story Campaigns that were in depth and entertaining to the point where you would feel like you are playing a role in an actual new TV seasons. Heck, an Expanse game that basically mirrors Star Trek Online one for one would sound pretty fun actually! From Commanding Starships from all three factions and explore the different Ring Gates. Lead Ground missions to investigate what happened to those that came before humanity. Customize your character and starship with gear to help complete your mission. Sorry for the long post! I am just going through a phase where I cannot believe that The Expanse truly ended at Season 6! LOL GL HF Everyone!

The day after Episode 6.6 dropped, I got Strange Dogs on my Kindle. Persepolis Rising just came in the mail three days ago, and it is clear in just the first few pages that Duarte will be a key driving force in the next part of the story. I didn't know that the Vital Abyss was part of the post-series reading list before this video, but skimming the reviews on Amazon it looks like it provides some relevant info about Cortazar, whose perspective is where Persepolis Rising starts. Am going to read The Vital Abyss this afternoon, thanks for the heads-up!

Duarte is so creepy! Another great villain. I know I'm probably committing heresy but I'm skipping ahead to the books after season 6 and I'll go back and read the others. I also loved the dichotomy of the concept of basic assistance on Earth. I am dying from a rare illness, which is shutting down my autonomic nervous system. I receive or am suppose to receive several government subsidized programs to aid me. I currently receive SSD or Social Security Disability Insurance. However right after I received my official diagnosis and began IVIG (infusion treatment), Covid hit, which shut down my treatments for 4 months, ( I got so ill) and almost every single government program. I worked many years, raised a son, spent 7 years working non profit (all monies cam from my hand exclusively) with at risk children and families in crises. I have an advanced degree. Yet the government barely keeps me alive and most of the programs literally shut down due to Covid lock-downs. I live well below the poverty level. I typically run out of food by the second to third week of each month and cannot afford much in the way of healthy food. The State gives rewards me a whopping $50.00 per month in food credit or SNAP card. _Yay I can go buy a gallon of milk and a sack of potatoes!_ I cannot afford my over the counter medications. None of them! I have no transportation currently as I am not suppose to drive; hopefully that will change - soon. I spend approximately $150.00 each month on Taxi services which takes food out of my mouth - as the government programs to assist me with picking up my medications or taking me grocery shopping have all shut down due to Biden handing out Unemployment like it was Halloween candy. No one wants to return to work esp when getting paid a mere pittance; On Unemployment many receive up to 3X more monthly. Why should they? I had to move into HUD (Government Subsidized Housing) 4 years ago. Most disabled residents living here also run out of food and barely survive. Plus making things even worse with my illness is the tons of paper work, "No"s, brick walls of doom, fiery hoops of death , and repetitively smashing my head against the wall until bloody etc daily just to barely live. Then add to that a Obama (does not) Care. Its business model in regards to government insurance is based off a "Pay to Perform" model, which means docs receive substantial pay-outs of they are able to lower a patients BP or Cholesterol for example. I have been refused treatment several times because Docs can't make money off of me. So why should they help me? It's not like they can fix me over night. In a nutshell what I live off of is a Socialistic almost Marxist type system. Young people many in academia who believe this system against Capitalism to be a valid way or both running our current messy governments & living with the results are either in utter denial or just not educated with their heads buried in the sand. Good video, thanks for the explanation! The name Laconia itself is a big indication of his ambitions (and more). Laconia was the region of ancient Greece around Sparta. As people will no doubt recall, Sparta was a militaristic society in which all male citizens served in the army. They were also strange in that they regarded themselves as descendants of Heracles (Hercules) who were never truly Greek and so perpetually alien occupiers of their own territory in Greece.

I was conflicted about the Martian storyline in Season 5. I know they had to keep things secret because the story was for Bobbie and Alex to discover what's happening. But I felt like I needed a few more scenes with the Martians at the ring gate in season 5. I haven't read the books but I was able to follow the story on a basic level. And this channel helped me understand some stuff also. But I like experiencing characters and where they work or live. I wanted to feel connected to the Martians at the ring. I think that's what made me feel disconnected to Laconia in Season 6.

They are supposed to be mysterious. They disappear behind their gate and nothing new is known about them until book 7. The gate entities are also mysterious. There is a lot to do in the final trilogy. Such a huge epic cannot be told in six seasons so I am glad they didn’t even try. They simply set it up. The showrunner says he is “working on it” meaning he continues to work towards an adaptation of the final trilogy in some form. One of the authors asks us to “be patient”. I am hopeful.

@thelemmiebee
@thelemmiebee 2 года назад
I do hope he makes a video about it because his videos are great. But to answer quickly, and this delves into some spoiler territory so don’t read on if you care about that kind of thing: there are beings in a different dimension which killed the Gate Builders and the protomolecule creators. They’re called The Goths, and they can act and manipulate time and space in a way we can’t fully comprehend…. When a ship goes through one of the rings, there is a waiting period before another is able to safely travel through any of the rings because otherwise this disturbs The Goths and they essentially awake and eat all of the energy going through the ring. If ships go through the gates at a certain interval the Goths won’t notice, or at least aren’t as bothered. It’s way more complicated than that, but that’s the gist without getting too much more into spoilers for the last 3 books.

SPOILERS. from up to the end of Book 9 Leviathan's Wrath....................... So are humans just gonna be ok knowing the unknown aggressor(s) are just out there still alive. The end made it seem like the Unkown Agress was also a hivemind but one sitting on a higher dimension(the 4th dimension or 5th possibly). The ring space was what the builders stole from the Unkown Aggressor(s) plane of reality. Essentially they were the monkeys poking at something bigger than them. Because the Unkown Agressor(s) has some sort of manipulative ability on lower consciousnesses he was able to wipe them out easily as their shared a more connected hive mind ability probably as a result of protomolecule research. What intrigues me is if the proto molecule itself sought to protect or find life that could combat the Unkown Agressor or like what Miller seemed to suggest was it looking for something that the builders left behind that could be used to win a war with the Unknown Agressor(s) If the Builders were able to steal the ring space from the Unknown Agressor(s) that means any sentient life could in theory do so as well effectively making Jim's sacrifice something that bought the universe time to prepare. I'm guessing James Holden is officially dead but integrated as a part of the ring stations intelligence along with Miller, Builder consciousnesses, and maybe Duarte?

Based on his hasta la vista message to Marco, he obviously views himself as the guardian of Laconia and he must have a wealth of resources beyond the orbital platform, to be so independent. However, as fascinating a character as Duarte presents himself, I would never follow him and I identify most with the Martians.
