In this video review, I look at Canon's second-generation eye-focus advanced consumer camera, the EOS Elan IIe. A camera that screams the 1990s in form and function. And while it certainly has its weak points, it's not bad for a plastic camera.

I bought this camera in 1997 and I’m still using it. In Australia it was known as EOS 50e. It has always given great results. It has had some rough treatment over the years but is still in brilliant condition. I stopped using the eye focus when I started wearing glasses.

They are fairly solid! And yeah the glasses thing was fixed with the 7e! Thanks for watching 🍻

Hi great video, I've owned my 50e a couple of years now and love using it. I have the battery grip attached most of the time. I use rechargeable batteries. There is a learning curve with 50e. The eye focus works fine for me, and I'm a glasses wearer, I did plenty of calibration, so my 50e knows my eyes accurately and easily. I don't agree with your closing comments I have no problems with my 50e, I'm gentle with all my film cameras, the eye assist focusing and depth of field (which you didn't mention) assist I find superb, it's best to calibrate a few times to train the system to accurately 'see' your eyes. Of course others may differ in their views of the 50E and that's fine. But I'm one happy user of the Canon 50E/Elan. Many thanks for this video Regards Rob (UK)

I'm glad that your copy is working well! I think mine had a lot more problems than what the person who gave me mine cared to admit, which I'll be explaining in my review of the Elan 7 that replaced the IIe. Thanks for watching 🍻

Another great review. I really like how you present these videos with the studio and field segments. This camera reminds me so much of my Canon EOS 5 and yet is different in details. I particularly like the fact that you use dials instead of menu setting for certain things like focus settings of single or multiple shots. Thanks for sharing this Alex.

The EOS 5 is a great camera! And thank you! It has taken a bit to find the right balance but I think I got it with this camera. Thanks for watching 🍻

I bought this camera new in 1999. I still have it and it works very well. No problem for me with eye-controlled focusing, and I have glasses... Maybe it depends on the correction of the glasses, or a badly done calibration... As for the grip, I've dropped it since you can find rechargeable 2CR5 batteries for cheap. I prefer a lightweight configuration. Even if the autonomy is a little less, I always have a spare battery with me, and in the evening the first one is quickly recharged... The only small drawback I find with this camera is that it's not as quiet as the EOS100, and that's why I've been using the latter lately...

Ah, good to know, I think in the case of my copy, the whole camera was starting to go and has since died (replaced by the Elan 7) glad to see that your copy is still going strong! Thanks for watching 🍻

Bought a Canon Elan IIe in 1997-8 after my wife won a Canon Rebel G. I fell in love with the autofocus since i was shooting manual focus Minolta X-370’s at that time. A lot of Canons of that era shared the film door latch and were interchangeable except for the fact that the part that broke was in the body and a pain in the ass to replace. Somewhere in my stuff, i have 7-8 of those latch assemblies “just in case”. This was my last 35mm camera before the digital Rebel came along when i bought one in September 2003. Of course once I started hoarding, er, collecting cameras i now have a bunch of them. A lot of Costco Color film went thru that camera and got fantastic images with the Canon EF 28-135 lens that lived on it.

I do like Manual focus but sometimes you just need something to do the hard work for you! Yeah that film latch! Someone suggested a 3d printed replacement which makes sense! Thanks for watching 🍻

I've had an Elan IIe since about 1998, I used it as my main camera for about 8 years. I don't recall what year the first door latch broke. The eye control function worked great for me on all three of them I've had.

You've covered the camera very well in this video! I have both the Elan and Elan IIe and I must admit that even though the eye controlled focus does work pretty good for me, I do like the original Elan a bit better because it's not as noticeable as the Elan II. I'm more of a focus and recompose kind of shooter so the eye control doesn't really add much for me (except for eating batteries!). The option to leave the leader out is a big plus though, something the OG Elan is lacking. Paired with the EF 28-105mm USM it's as if you're shooting with a modern dSLR, it has just about all the features of a new camera, while shooting on film.

Nice, thanks for the review! Are you using the Elan name system because that was the standard in the us/canada compare to just using the number system eos 50E?

I’m using the Elan name because it was the North American branding. And it’s the branding on the model I have. Thanks for watching 🍻

I was gifted a EOS 10 with the bar code reader. Cute gimmick though I never really used it.

I've had both the EOS 650 and the Elan 7E. I still regret selling the 650 but the Elan 7E was without a doubt the worst Canon camera I've ever owned. I'm willing to say it may have been a lemon but I never had decent results with the camera. The eye focus never worked well for me because of my glasses. When the body died after 2 yrs there were no tears shed and i was more than happy to toss it out in the trash. When the first Canon digital Rebel came out I got that was very happy. As of now the only Canon EOS film camera I have is the EOS-1 N RS

I’m not sure that the Elan 7E as a line was a lemon but the body I had surely was. The eye focus wasn’t the only thing to be iffy on the body I had. There were communication issues with the lens that I never had when I used the lenses on the 650 that I still had. And just the overall fit and finish of the body I had was cheesy to say the least

@@sophietucker1255 - you had a dud when it came to the Elan 7E (EOS 30 here in the UK). I owned one of these from new in 2000 until I broke the film door hinge in 2012. It worked great and took great photos all of which, I still have in my photo albums. The eye control worked like a dream for me but that was before I had to start wearing glasses. One thing I did notice however was that you did benefit from calibrating it every now and again, as this was cumulative every time you did it, and the system improved the more it was done. I found that if the camera started mis behaving in this regard, a quick re-calibration fixed the problem. Sadly the eye control system isn't so good with glasses. I now have an EOS DSLR and recently bought a mint condition EOS 3 film body which is just a joy to use. It too has eye control and as I now wear glasses, it isn't so accurate. I have to say though, I does sometimes work so I might keep adding calibrations under different light settings to see if it improves.
