I was critical of the RAAF F-35 project because of its fixation on the F-35 without considering alternatives. Eventually the RAAF purchases Some Super Hornets. This allowed a bit of a stop-gap and very effective in service with and replacing some classic Hornets. And allowed for some time to consider the F-35 some more. And the F-35 project showed an improvement and began to reach some goals. The RAAF now has about 72 F-35s and 36 Super Hornets. About 30 classic Hornets are still in hand but not operational. Ukraine considered the classic Hornets but went with NATO F-16s. About 10 classic Hornets may now go to the Philippines. They still have some airframe hours and considerable capabilities for the Philippines. Including AMRAAM and Harpoon. Some of these saw service over Syria in 2017. The US should still have plenty of spare parts. They can compliment the PAF T-50 fighters. These classic Hornets support a number of other guided weapons. Australia has been supporting Philippines training since WW2. The Philippines military is growing with more modern systems. The F-35 is now in full operation with the RAAF. The RAAF remains the most capable airforce in the Southern Hemisphere. With a very well balanced capability. Some of the Super Hornets are SEAD G models. One of the Wedgetail AWACs are supporting NATO in Eastern Europe. The Australian military is growing significantly in capability. The F-35s will be supported by Australian built Wingman drones. With KC-30 tankers the RAAF will have an effective long range capability. The F-35 is a vital element of the ADF. Protecting sea approaches. Also giving the RAAF an effective deployment capability to support allies around the world.

A good solution to the scan angles is to have a multi-faceted aesa plate. I guess in effect that's having multiple aesa radars, but with a single structure, common cooling, etc. it's kind of a gray area. There is one other pro/con (depending on how you look at it) with high powered AESA radars, but it's rather shush. GaN will offer about 65-70% improved efficiency. Read that as 65-70% less cooling needed, or 65-70% stronger signal output with the same power, or any combination thereof. It could also be used to leverage larger amounts of power in a smaller package (albeit with appropriately beefed up cooling. This is pretty substantial. "It is incredible how such a poorly conceived and run program may have produced such an outstanding aircraft" That's really the soul of the F-35 in a nutshell. The compute elements are too centralized, yeah. It'd be better off with more numerous smaller computers, with less lines of code each, doing their own thing, and communicating, but much less 'dependent' on each other. When the US government does anything with computers, it's usually a bit of a train wreck. To be fair, you see that in the private sector too though, whenever bean-counters get too fixated on "lowest bid". Overall the F-35's computing works well, but it could have worked better. Granted, a single F-35 has as much compute as the rest of the USAF put together... so it was kind of a big task. It works better than windows 10/11... Concurrency never saves money, in the end. I expect that "if" the XA-100 is perfected, it will be for the B-21 (range & temperature advantages), or possibly NGAD/FA-XX, and then possibly back-tracked to the F-35. There's an "if" and a "possibly" to that, which compounded equals a firm "maybe someday". Though the F135 engine updates are going to end up with just as much thrust, possibly more than the XA-100, and 'some' economy improvements, and sooner rather than later. The competition between P&W and GE burdened the program with choosing between two great options. One rarely discussed LPI radar tech on the F-35 is that it can black-out areas in the tracked flight path of detected targets (even while the F-35 is maneuvering). Obviously if the contact changes heading though, it can bump into actively tracked areas briefly though. This denies targets' ability to track & analyze the F-35's radar emissions, and greatly shortens their window for detection. MPADS & AA guns, agreed, are not really able to be dealt with by SEAD (ergo the obsolescence of the A-10). But they cannot target aircraft at higher altitudes. So if you have SEAD, you can pretty safely fly high in an area. So acting as an eye in the sky is very realistic, assuming you've taken out all the SAM systems of noteworthy size. 1MW peak power is definitely wrong for the AN/APG-81. But the F-35 had about 2.5x the power generation capacity of the F-22, and also greater than 40 kW of cooling capacity (about half engine cold air & half fuel heat-dumping). Some of that will get eaten up by the increased compute capabilities, and the myriad sensors. But overall, the power availability of the radar should be nearly double that of the F-22. With GaN, signal output could be greater than triple. (disclaimer: this is based on pieced together public info, and math, not specific knowledge) Sidekick is easy to install. It's just a wire bundle, a bay door, and a software update. Could likely be handled at the depot level, without going to LM for install. Production model AIM-260 should be "in testing" now at Edwards. I'd expect more info about it very soon. I'd suspect that the new cpu would be highly multi-core, and a lot of the performance would come from that. Handled right, it should work fine. (with computers though, it's always "should" not "will"). Just based on years of release, it's likely something along the lines of going from core2 duo to threadripper. Great compilation video :)

Thanks. I have been looking for that deflection rate. You gave 45 to 60 degrees. I still think moving the radar to different angles can be useful. Even just rotation. Along with other modules around the aircraft. You have some other good information. Good to see F-35 costs coming down. Having seen extensive air combat in Ukraine we can see how capable the F-35 should be. Where even the F-16 is expected to be so capable. Even the older models with some upgrades.

One thin I take with me. If the platform needs to use Link 16 to communicate with legacy platforms it must be sending in all directions thus undermining its use as a Libro. Or am I miss interpreting this? Is there some thing that is stoping the MADL from being integrated on other platforms. LastI want to mention some thing that I have reacted to in the debate. Some times in bedia its reported at the Link 16 is old and the MADL is new and for the future. Which true in it self. But then the underlying tone is abit that the compeditirs have chosen a bad data link. I think we should be clear. The reason why Link 16 is used is because its the agreed up on data link. Its there to be interoperable between nations and platforms. The JSF got around that finaly by having both. A good solution but I feel it is not fair to use it as an argument for how briliant a new platform is.

What's actually happening, is that not one single "superior technology" wunderwaffen of the west have lived up to its hype, some, like the Javelins and Stingers have been outright spectacular failures.
