I hate how Steppenwolf is a generic conqueror, the OG Steppenwolf was Darkseid's uncle and lead strategist. He was the only person who could talk shit to Darkseid and joke with him because he was supposed to be a legend in his own right and everyone kind of respected him. Now he's some space barbarian jobber who looks cool until Darkseid comes back with the milk. Also, I liked how wonky the original New Gods' designs were.
"Hey superman, I need you to get something into space for us" Of course Mr.president id be happy to help with scientific missions "Oh no it's not for some scientific thing" What is it then? "Space laser" What? "Giant fucking space lasers so I can beam some motherfucker"
@@oldylad Ronald Reagan was pos president known for making the aids crisis worse and ignoring economic problems in the black communities. He's was pretty stupid too wanting to defund particle research in favour of giant spaceasers he thought would be the next big weapon. He also created trickle down economics where he believed reducing taxes for the rich would create more jobs and spread wealth but instead it just made the rich richer and shifted the tax burden onto the middle class making cost of living rise.
After reading Earth 2, I personally would like a comic about that version of the Superfamily. Have a Clark Kent who lost his powers and now is a normal journalist, his wife Lois Lane who is a cyborg Red Tornado and thier adoptive daughter Kara/Power Girl, it would be really interesting to see thier dynamic together, but alas.
20:59 the way how the New Gods work, is that they are always the same variants no matter the universe. Using avatar-like duplicants, with the real forms of them being in the god sphere. Which operates beyond the multiverse. The characterization is the only real issue across versions, minus Darkseid, who’s conscious was shattered during Final Crisis
@@oldmanlogan9616 well we already knew they were above the multiverse since the 80s they weren’t effected by Crisis On Infinite Earths resetting the multiverse. So Morrison just went further by explaining it. But yeah. I do agree it would be better if they were just separate variants across the multiverse. But like other 5D beings, they are always the same no matter the continuity
This is disproven because of countless examples, but one I can think of is Teen Titans Go! Darkseid is a joke in that show. Trying to make them “exist outside the omniverse” is so stupid. Omniverse is all of existence. there can’t be anything outside of it. Sounds like they’re trying to make them OG Mary sues self insert OC who are better than every other character ever
I stopped reading it around Convergence event. Tie-ins were sweet, but the main story sucked. Pretty clear, it was to set up Earth 2 Society and we all know how mind numbing that boy gets.
James Robinson exit really hurt the new Earth 2 concept. It should be a new world to the JSA , where they are legacy characters, instead become a generic world
I wholeheartedly agree. I didn't really like the new 52 because in the beginning it was confusing with what was canon and what wasn't.I felt a lot of the changes felt uncharacteristic but earth 2 was so different that it didn't feel like a pale imitation but a rejuvenated concept. It did sadly dip in quality but a lot of what it introduced was interesting even if not executed the best.
I read The Justice Society from 2007 back in 2018 and while I don't remember much it was a very fun comic that made me realize DC is more then The Justice League. I was wondering if you could do a video on the X-Force books. Like a rise and fall type of video.
So I didn’t have a problem with Alan Scott being gay in Earth 2 but I did when they retconned Old Alan Scott in the main universe as gay. The reason I for this is because Earth was a parallel world so it was fine for a new take on the character. But it didn’t make any sense to change him in the main universe. Also him being gay takes away from his son Obsidian, a long time hero who’s been out for years. Nowadays they don’t give any focus to him which is a shame
I agree. I do think representation of minorities is important and there are great LGBT characters like Batwoman, Obsidian, Constantine, Midnighter, Maggie Sawyer, etc. but when they do that thing of turning characters that had existed for a long time gay, like Alan Scott or Velma from Scooby Doo, and want to make it like they've always been secretly gay. I really doubt the writers that came before wrote these characters with that in mind and because of that it feels fake for me when they suddenly come out of the closet. Almost like a pay-off without a set up.
@@tabarebruch6257 Batwoman was revamped as gay same with Constantine real gay characters would be Hawk and Dove, the others are forced inclusion is just that you do not know the characters.
I've been bothered for years that Steppenwolf was clearly killed off in this series, but has reappeared ever since, with no explanation of how and when he was resurrected. Since then there have been several soft reboots that could explain it. But he reappeared before the Rebirth Era. It just doesn't make sense... But it's DC's practice to ignore their own continuity as it suits them.
turning earth 2 green lantern gay was THE bigest problem that should have buried that run before it properly released wanna make a new green lantern? wanna make him gay? MAKE A NEW CHARACTER don't ruin a character that everyone knows shit like that is why comics are dying painfully don't take known characters and don't fucking change and ruin them make new characters completely and when they destroy everything people know? you have to like it or you're -phobic or -cist while being 100% correct
Eehhh isnt this a parrallel earth? Isnt twisting heroes and exploring new takes the whole reason parallel earths exist? I understand what you are saying but taking known characters and changing them is the reason why the multiverse exists in these kind of stories
I like the idea of pre-reboot characters getting their own section of a multiverse where they can continue to exist while the mainline works continue. If someone has an idea for those particular characters, they can make it whenever. The key is that these stories stay somewhat infrequent to not overuse the setting and advance them enough to be in line with the mainline.
FINALLY, someone talks about this!!! This has bothered me for a decade, also the fact that had this series been successful, it would have effectively replaced the original JSA
First of all welcome back dude love seeing your videos and second I actually kind of liked Earth too, As a kid. Now looking back on it and mainly watching this video yeah it was a mess the only thing I really did like if it was val-zod
Realistically. People would be racist towards Calvin Harris and deny him as being black because he doesn’t have African ancestry. This is based on real life of people say the Andaman Islanders who are considered black yet people deny them that because they don’t have African ancestry. Even though they were labeled the same way Africans were as black. Because many people forget blackness is a label and never a genetic one. With the whole Tyla coloured situation exposing some of that.
2:41 that’s not what’s happening. They’re in separate beds. This panel just makes it seem like they’re sharing a bed, but the literal next panel shows they’re in two different beds. Weird that they share a room, but they are not sharing a bed
Making Alan Scott gay killed the series for many fans right out of the gate. It did for me. Then again, New 52 was also a jumping off point for older fans like myself; it wasn't our DC anymore, with the pandering the most obvious example. Making Cyborg a founding member of the JL meant havoc for Teen Titan history. A black Wally West meant a very prominent character with an over 50 year history in comics suddenly no longer existed. Beyond that, the older fans liked the JSA the way there were: elder statemen guiding a new generation. And did we need a second new universe on top of what the other 51 titles were creating? This JSA was DOA.
Prob because the original Earth 2 characters were removed. If the book had done well enough, that version of Jay would have pushed the original's Jay away from new readers
I grew up reading comics from my local library cuz I didn’t have enough to go out and buy them at comic shops and didn’t have the means to read them online, lots of libraries had books like marvels civil war or dc earth one and earth 2 series, I grew to love earth 2 as a series bcuz of all its problems, it literally felt like a world where it’s characters were always fighting for freedom and peace even when it seemed like it was out of their reach, I always admired that and I’m glad that I now know that they had a sorta happy ending
Earth-2 Worlds End was so bad that Darkseid destroying their planet was the highlight. 😂 The bad guy looked like the good guy ironically. XD He ended there bad failed plot lines.
Loved Earth 2 Society, possibly the only comic book series I read twice. A new setting, a new home, new heroes fitting in old roles. Wished they made a continuation.
I feel the same way. When Earth-2 launched, I was interested because it was James Robinson. I adore his Starman series and if we HAD to have someone do this new 52 version, I was happy it was him. I even enjoyed some of what Tom Taylor did, especially with the final moments of Brutaal. But like you said, things went to hell during World's End. It was like a disaster movie that kept going and going and going. I checked in on Society but the art was an immediate turn off. I wonder how Earth-2 would've played out had Robinson stayed. Would we have eventually gotten a crossover with the Justice League? What was the ultimate goal with the war with Darkseid? We'll never know. And let me finish by saying I loved your Superboy and Kid Flash video, and after seeing this one, I'm excited to see what you do next. Keep up the good work!
I still love and prefer the OG Earth 1 & 2. Reading those stories evoke within me, feelings of optimism and the blind pursuit of a better tomorrow. Similar feeling I get from Alex Ross's DC art.
Yep I remember skipping Worlds End during its initial release. I was already reading Earth 2 and Futures End and didn’t need to get even more depressed. 😢 New 52 editorial really was on a doom and gloom kick back then Read Earth 2, skip Worlds End, read the side stuff for Convergence and maybe give Society a try.
And a daughter, Jade. There are countless gay people who have biological children, even though I understand why you wouldn't make immediate sense, but it's far more common than we'd expect. For instance, Jay-Z's mom.
I've liked Earth 2 New 52 version except they should have kept and Thomas Wayne, Lois Lane, Dick Grayson, Oliver Queen & co out of it. Additionally, I did really hate they turned Alan Scott gay. Dumb move.
I'd like to speak against changing characters' immutable characteristics, like ethnicity, attraction, and sex. Instead of getting "new takes on characters", we should be granted straight up new characters. There's nothing wrong with creating whoever you want to create, but there is a problem with changing a character's, well, core characteristics. Particularly when we're talking about "new official renditions". You want to make Superman Black? Go ahead, in an Elseworld, of course. What if all of a Sudden, Harley Quinn was unmade bisexual? What if Cyborg was Asian all of a sudden? You get it, don't you?
Me following earth 2 run sumerize :Hope, despair, despair, despair, cameo wow, despair, hope, despair, cameo wow, wow moment, despair, despair, wow moment despair, hope ? All I like from this run is : Power Girl Hot, Batman Thomas, Dick when he actually know what is going on and do stuff instead of being that nagging child What I confuse about : so make green lantern gay but .... what did green lantern do and his lover significant aside getting fridge TWICE ? New superman ... cool so why is he not inspiring anyone ? a lot of wow moment but it just feel like cheap bait
honestly, my biggest issue with the 52 JSA is Jay's stupid helmet and Allan's lack of a cape. i could get into my problems with the writting but i'll spare you the time wasted if i did
It’s so odd hearing Dan Abnett get brought up in something not related to Warhammer. He’s a fantastic author and the fact that he managed to drag something good out of the cluster that is this story is nothing short of incredible. I love his Vampirella stories in particular
Man I've been meaning to check out Vampirealla for years. For whatever reason I intend to read it anytime I see it mentioned. Thrn completely forget about it existing until I see it mentioned again. S*its so annoying.😢😂
Man injustice f*cking sucks all the prequels to the game all the sequel to the game the second game is bad all of it you have some fan service here and there or teasing and that it
I hate when writers take pre-existing characters and change their sexuality. You are a writer, write your own character to fit what you want for the reboot. Changing a legacy character to hit a "diversity checkbox" is so uninspired. A lot of people were branded homophobic for disliking the change. Is it homophobic to want a legacy character to be kept consistent? Especially when you can just make a new character. Earth 2 didn't even need a reboot. What makes it iconic is it acting like a time capsule for old comic book characters.
Fun fact, Earth 2 was refferenced heavily in a conversation between Val Zod and Jonathan Kent in the Young Super-Man storyline, although that would be wasted potential after Ultra-Man trapped Val and Red Tornado Lois in the Phantom Zone, and Injustice Superman killed Ultra-man before Johnathan could even make a move in that fight.
20:56 man if I had a nickel for everytime multiversal singularities caused absolute fucking headaches in continuity, I’d have 2 nickels. Which isn’t a lot, but it’s weird that it’s happened twice
What do you mean by vandalism? Everything in the Earth 2 series is effectively undone by Rebirth by returning the Justice Society to the prime timeline. There are multiple JSA led titles out right now, and a new one on the way by Jeff Lemire. The world of this Earth 2 still exists in DC's multiverse as its own, separate thing.
I grew up with the revival Justice Society before the 52 and it took me a while to figure out why I enjoyed it: it felt like a family. There were the teens, the grandpas, some adults. Everyone figuring things out and helping each other and while not always perfect and with conflict, in the end they loved each other like a family. It was nice to see, for example, Alan Scott going from homophobe to appreciate his gay son and his son's partner. Or Coutney and Billy Bartson attempt romance and figuring things out. I was so excited over Kingdom Come Superman of all people showing up! It was an amazing run. I loved Starman, Robinson's run with Jack Knight was simply amazing and one of my favorites of all time, so I had high expectations of Earth-2. I had loathed everything Nu-52 brought to the table. Then... hope slowly but surely got snufed out.
Yeah earth 2 from the new 52 started off strong but slowly declined into mediocrity in my opinion and to make it worse it didn’t really recover after earth 2 worlds end storyline in my opinion.
I never really liked Earth 2. It was pretty generic for the most part. I also never understood why so many people liked Val-Zod. He was a boring character who barely did anything because he was a pacifist. The Calvin Ellis (President Superman) of Earth-23 was a far better character
So many lazy writers nowadays. Too lazy and uncreative to come up with their own characters so they just make Superman black. Batman a woman. Totally new and original characters! Not lazy writing and pandering at all.
Ok, now this book started off awesome. Then quickly dropped the ball so hard. Which sucked cause it could of been awesome. Having a different world yet familiar could of granted a good writer so much freedom. But alas...they done messed it up.
Honestly I enjoyed Earth 2 New 52 run And the reason why I enjoyed it is because it's what I wanted the new 52 to be where you have your own book and you're doing whatever you want to in that continuity without affecting the main continuity I wish Earth to was the new 52 and let us still have post crisis because nobody asks for flashpoint. And because Earth to New 52 didn't have any continuity or anything I could relatively enjoy it even though sometimes it was frustrating to read We just felt like damn these heroes can't catch a break.
Geoff Johns “Infamous”? lol, I guess if you only judge him for what happened post flashpoint, which isn’t even really on him. He’s got one of the most impressive records of any writer at DC.
Others have said it but rest in peace to Benny or the Comicstorian, he was a legend and for a time I wanted to do comic book RU-vid before I realized how impossible it’d be to learn the lore and keep up, he seemed like an amazing person and I hope those left behind are doing as good as they can be
I really loved how interconnected it all was right off the bat! Reading a bunch of issues that were tied together... trying to make everything relevant. It seemed pretty exciting at the time- like World's Finest with Power Girl and Huntress. There were also some cosmic DC issues too but I can't remember them very well lol Captain Karrot reboot or somethin... But alas! It's good to hear I didn't miss much by not finishing it
I feel like steppenwolf showed his potential as a main villain in the first arc of the comic. Zack Snyder must have read this and thought what a great idea it was to replace him with evil superman as well.
I loved Earth-2 until the main comics just became a supplement for World's End. Society was a step in the right direction and i loved the set-up at the end. Daniel Wilson did Jay dirty in Society though. Aged hum down and made him a drunk.
1:17 soooo Johnny Thunder is where Jakeem Thunder comes from. . . . Also, what happened to Crush's girlfriend who was in a love triangle with Damian in Teen Titans?
I’m adding you to my subscription list for the future! Your videos are truly fantastic so far and I’m very grateful for them especially because there was another feature that I was excited to look at this morning but the website is not working properly and I was feeling very depressed and stressed out until I found your videos. Keep up the great work and thanks again for making a hard day for me somewhat easier. Fantastic job on this analysis! There are certainly some stories you talked about here that I will have to look into. Once again I’m very glad that I added you to my list!
I’ve always loved the JSA, both in the golden age and when they became apart of new earth. Any story that had them crossover with the JL had me cheesing. I tried to get on board with this new reboot but I never got past Alan Scot’s new origin. I just couldn’t
They launched too many numbers too fast, i tried to keep up with new 52 earth 2, but was not able to get a good idea of much , then they launched convergys then futures end. It was too much as always i liked some concepts but it was too much too fast.
