Demo started on the Fairgrounds Square Mall earlier this summer. Boscov's, Burlington, AMC Theatre, Super Shoes and Planet Fitness remain and will be renovated into stand-alone structures but the rest of the mall is reduced to a pile of rubble. 1980-2020

Thank you for sharing. This is really sad. I live on the West coast now but I grew up in Reading in the 80s and early 90s. I spent alot of time in this mall. Incredibly sad.😢

This mall was great back in the 80s and early 90s. I spent a lot of time at this mall. Its sad that it's gone but it was on life support for quite a few years.

I worked here in 1987 and 88 at DEB shop. It was so busy during that time! I'm glad I got to walk through once more before the demo.

Spent most of my teenage years at that mall. Second job i ever had was at the Eric Theater. The original theater in the mall up from Time out. In the 80s it was the place to be for us. LOTs of fond memories. Thank you for doing this.

This mall was so amazing in the 1980s and 1990s. Very sad to see it die a slow death. Ominous clouds! Great video footage.

what it came own to was Stores wanted to open inside there . but they wanted too much for rent space . so no one wanted to pay the amount to rent . so over time stores closed and we got what we see . i used to go here cause of the Fyi and the short lived Hot topic and the golden eagle comics ( which is now next door ) but yeah corp greed .

It was dying in the late 90s, but Cinema Center breathed some new life into it. Unfortunately, IMAX became the big thing shortly after which relegated the mall to an afterthought. I remember going there often as a kid, when Montgomery Ward was added, and when they went under.

Sad.. and a shame, the mall was not that old at all, a shame someone did not come along with some good business sense and do something positive and money making with the mall, could have turned it into something good..

My friend's mom rented a space there for her business but the owner just kept raising rent to offset the dwindling customers which is what chased all the businesses out.

Boscov's still has the restaurant. The logo signs at the back still needs painting. Teal green is too 1980's and 1990's.

@@BerksNostalgia A few years back the Reading Eagle reported that the owners of the mall - I think it was GP Properties or something like that had supposedly been charging outrageous rent on the stores in the mall and the stores that could stay were paying it but supposedly GP wasn't paying what they were supposed to be on the mall property (apparently pocketing the money from the rent) and then ran off and filed bankruptcy. They were charging outrageous rental fees to the stores in the mall and when the majority of the stores couldn't handle the rent they ended up closing up shop. (I was trying to find the archive of the news article but reading eagle doesn't go back that far in their online archives).. maybe someone else can collaborate and remembers what I'm talking about.
@BerksNostalgia

@@angelascheipe5539 thanks that does sound familiar. They were just trying to milk it for whatever was left of it's dying carcass. I think this end was inevitable anyway but who knows. 😟

Everyone says to bring back the race track but the reason the track was sold to develop the mall is because it was no longer making a profit
@Robbinsbuiltgarage
@Robbinsbuiltgarage 3 года назад
Berks Nostalgia i was told the track was shut down because of the noise. People ruined the track. Shouldnt move to a place knowing theres a track there and you dont want the noise. Then complain about it and shut it down.

@@Robbinsbuiltgarage this is interesting... My dad grew up in Laureldale and seemed to remember it not being very popular by the end but Google eludes an actual answer. I think its time for me to dive in, research and use it as a topic for a future video
