The Fallout 4 Next Gen Update BROKE Fallout 4 Script Extender; a critical enabler for many of Fallout 4's best mods. As a result, Fallout 4 modded playthroughs all over the globe have been affected an thousands have been left playing the vanilla game and whatever additions were added with the Fallout 4 Next Gen Update. Thankfully the dedicated team at F4SE have been working tirelessly to update their plugin, and we now have a Script Extender beta available for modders to test with!
This video aims to cover the history of F4SE updating through this new update and as a pat-on-the-back for these absolute giga-chads. Visit their Nexus page and give them an endorsement! They deserve it for the hard work they've put in with tackling the mess the new update left them with!

So today 07/05/2024 Need: SEE THROUGH SCOPES (with solar cannon), MOD MANAGER, MCM SETTING MANAGER, TRANSFER SETTLEMENT and we are good to go and never update again Bug: actually the BFG9000 of creation club is broken, the weapon not charge. Use an old mod zip file and all is fine - some weapon are invisible and shoot esclamation mark (on xbox series X only?) That'all

With 350+ mods there's no way I'm "updating" my game to Todd the Howard's "Next Gen" update. My game looks amazing, runs great and this "Next Gen" shit would only be a severe downgrade. Many of the mods I enjoy are really old, the authors are long gone and I don't expect they'll be back to update their stuff. It's a shame that I'll miss out on Fallout London, but I can't go back to a vanilla game ...no way.

completely understandable. Some of my favourite mods, like "Play as a Toilet" and "Fist of the North Shaun" get lost with the update so I'm also very hesitant. There would need to be a lot more to gain from updating for me to consider it

Thankfully, last year I backed up my entire Fallout 4 folder + MO and am playing my game again as if no bomb update ever happened. When the new F4SE rolls out I'm scared to use it! I've got mods in my load order that I know the mod Authors have stopped updating years ago (yeah some of my mods are that old!). Well since I have the game backed up, suppose I could update F4SE and give it a try to see if I don't have a melt down from missing my favorite mods 🤣 Thanks for your help Snail!

I know what you mean. I dont plan to update my fallout4 (& F4SE) ever again even with a stable F4SE mainly because fallout is a really old game and alot of the creators of some great mods have stopped updating them probably because they have moved on with their lives. Anyway the next gen content is rather insignificant, just abit of some extra main missions that I dont think we will miss out anything. Also we have always been managing well with the previous version up until this nuclear bomb of an update came and literally causing this massive mod fallout. I am just focusing on building up my settlements while waiting for the next Fallout game to come.

@@SnailOXD Incorrect. I too have a Series X and have no issues downloading mods for the base game (No DLC) on Game Pass while I wait for a GOTY sale. Must just be good RNG after waiting so long to give it another go post refunding of the loading simulator less than 48 hours after the midnight release. 😎

I'm on the series S. I got sorta lucky, though. At first, the update deleted all my mods. I was able to download some mods here and there, nothing big, though. Mojave Hunter outfit, dogmeat harness, cheat engine things like that. I started a new game, and a few hours in the game crashed. Now, I can't even go to the mods section. It's lit up and I can click mods but the game says it can't go forward. I'm gonna try to clear memory or the cache on my Xbox and see what happens

@@GregsOrios That's exactly what happened to mine, I had over 25 mods for over 7 years (some very good nude) with bounce physics on my Xbox one, Series X. I completely lost it all😡 I can't even play the base game because I had the hide away PIP BOY mod so when I bring up the screen it just shows my arm. And my mod icon is still greyed out on the load screen! I spent hundreds of hours & years building up structures & custom layouts all over the Commonwealth, Nuka World etc. all to be removed in one update.

@@dwayneleigh9 update on clearing the cache. It worked. Just have to find all your mods again. Which sucks but it worked for me and the game is sorta fine. It crashed once but I played for nearly 6 hours so so far its okay

I discovered that some of my favourite mods are long abandoned - they were updated for the previous F4SE but wont be updated now. When I try to rollback, I paste all the depots as in your prev video and when I do, the steam nor the F4SE detects the .exe file of the game. I tried so much stuff, but nothing seems to get it to work. I know you have tons of comments here, but if you have any idea on how to fix this, would you help me please? I was so heartbroken when I found out I will probably never see my built cities and my old characters the same again.. :(

You'll probably have to uninstall FO4 AND F4SE, reinstall it, re-download the depots and do a clean install of F4SE (easiest by dropping the zipped F4SE file into Vortex if you use that). Run the F4SE_Launcher.exe with f4se as the only mod enabled. See if it launches. If it doesn't, you can either proceed with troubleshooting steps or use the downgrader mod on Nexus. See if all that works, hopefully it gets you up and running with your old mods again

I was going to use my back up but i decided to just play vanilla fo4 on this new updated until a new SE is available. Kill off any of my old mods that aren't going to be supported anymore. I'll just be starting over on my new mod list.

Thats fair, likely there will be replacements for many older unsupported mods. My only issue is a lot of silly old mods that do wacky things are going to get lost, because a lot of them are from around 2016-2017

I have no need to update the game now, but my main concern is that any NEW mods probably won't support the older version of the game which is a big bummer, and all so Bethesda could get gamer journal headlines that added nothing but lame Creation Club content to the game..... But my current mods will likely suffice.

A great visual enhancing mod I see you're missing is one that adds dynamic shadows to flashlights. Even without any other graphics mod it makes the game so much more immersive feeling! I highly recommend

There's a few of them on the nexus depending on what other mods you have. My game on Steam Deck is nuked and even my vortex install won't run so I have to wait for the update since I don't have enough storage on my main drive to downgrade. Try looking up one for the flashlights. You may or may not need a patch I'm actually not sure which one exactly is doing the work since I had a few dynamic lights mods installed but it may actually just be the Dynamic Lights and Shadows Overhaul. Otherwise like I said just look up ones for dynamic flashlights. I know there's a few

I subbed for updates. I have a request for a mod video down below, and why we would benefit: If you did a step by step walkthrough on how to mod fallout 4 with your exact modlist, that would be super appreciated. I like step by step guides that are friendly to people who have no idea what they are doing because I tried to mod fallout 4 and screwed up big time. See below for details on that. And, I successfully rolled back the update, but the unnofficial patch updated to the new version, so now I have to choose between pre and post-2024 mods. I have had huge issues modding fallout 4 because modding fallout 4 is more complicated than modding stardew valley. Stardew Valley I watched a youtube video that taught me to simply unzip the mods right into the mod folder and the stardew mod manager would run it from there. Not so with Fallout 4 and Vortex. Once I figured out how to upload to vortex, I had to start all over. Then, there are a lot of mods that I upload into vortex and they would not work in game. Other mods required mods that did not have an upload to Vortex option, so I had no idea how to use them. Some mods were also broken, and I felt lost not knowing what ones I could expect to work and what ones still worked. Being someone who has no idea what I am doing, I may benefit from learning the "Why" but if the "why" takes too long, I really don't have time to learn it. I just want to know what to do. A "step-by-step guide to Snail's mod list" would be an awesome video. I literally wasted a full day modding just to not have succeeded😭

I am fairly certain I know what the issue would be! Also, yeah this is 100% something I want to do and you've given me the right amount of push to start working on it. I have one video in the pipeline right now, once that comes out (roughly a few days - week) I'll begin work on the "How to Mod" video. The progress on the script extended is awesome but I don’t see myself updating anytime soon, I’m also at a similar spot where I like my load order and want to finish at least a play through with it. I have it running beautifully and I did all of the roll-backing and installed all the mods I wanted last night, since I reinstalled fallout the day after the update released. Because of that I still am finding plenty more mods that are 99% still made for pre-update that I’m adding right now, and I doubt half of these will get an update the dudes who made em haven’t been active in 5+ years

if you can find the files specifically related to that stuff, you can try. It's just a matter of removing the files again if they didn't work, I believe. HOWEVER, just in case, make a back up of your game (just copy it and put it in another location) if youre going to attempt this

I'm conflicted. I really like that the "Next Gen" update fixed the settlement resource bug, but I want all of my mods to work without needing to be updated. If there were a mod that fixed the settlement resource bug for the previous version of Fallout 4, I would happily roll back my game version. However as I understand it, it was an engine level bug that only Bethesda was capable of fixing.

Is it an up-to-date file? You';ll have to make sure it's the version compatible with 0.6.23 F4SE, otherwise I don't think it'll work. In any case this is also going to be something difficult for me to troubleshoot, you're probably better off posting to their Nexus page in the "Posts" section

I'm not sure if anyone can help me but I downgraded my game to 1.10.163 and it says that F4SE is not compatible with this version of the game. Please update. So I downloaded F4SE version 0_06_21 in hopes that that would fix the issue but the same message pops up? I'm just tryna play with my mods fully functional.

It should be version 0.6.23 for F4SE. You might need to completely uninstall.and reinstall F4SE, preferrably via Vortex or MO2, whichever

Only one mod I truly care about with script extender was CHW - Classic holstered weapons. Like such a simple feature that should be a given in the game ... I don't want to pull a rifle out my ass just kills the immersion SO with these updates i'm going to see if it will work but I doubt :( oh how far bethesda have fallen...

You need the newest version of F4SE, which is found on the F4SE website or their nexus page. Then you have to reinstall it

@@ztormur6504 so unfortunately until Bethesda gives us a "finalized" version there probably won't be a stable F4SE. There's most likely another update or two in the pipeline on Beth's end, and ianpat and team just need to sort of react to whatever they do. There's also the matter of a lot of classic mods needing to be updated to work with the new F4SE since it's just so different. Honestly I think we might not get a stable version, with everything properly working, for like a year. I highly advise rolling back your game version in the mean time

The Battle bus will definitely be mentioned, but I might opt for some additional mods that add to the flavour of the area. It's also my first time playing through it at all, believe it or not

They should have just made... Fallout 4 ... Vanilla, Last Gen version. Fallout 4 SE ... all the Next Gen stuff, and all the junk from the Creation Club you want to cram into it. Everyone is happy... Then you could have file transfers for Save Games from Last Gen to Next Gen Versions. Then Bethesda could have sold Fallout 4 SE as a new version, like they did with Skyrim SE.

it works*. The caveat being the next gen update itself is quite unstable. My best recommendation is to simply rollback. the NGU carries no actual benefits for anyone, at all.

Did not just break mods. My game shows that all the addons are installed but none of it is actually in the game so everything I built with items from the addons are gone.

The fucked up part is that native coded mods (i.e. on console) are broken by Bethesda's update, so it'll be up to individual mod authors on whether or not they want to update their mods

@@SnailOXD fortunately, UFO4P, SKK Utilities, Workshop Framework, Enhanced Interiors 2.0 (a personal favorite interior modifier), and something else has been updated. It’s not so the fact that these mods are good, but more so the fact that mod authors are quick to update their mods. I have hope for the community

hi guys i need help. I dont know if its that new gen update but when i enter power armor game automatically crash. I tried uninstal every mod but it fix nothing (please someone help )

Unfortunately if it's crashing even with no mods installed, it's probably a bug within the Next Gen Update itself. You can test it by starting a vanilla save with no mods, enter power armor at Concord Museum and see if it crashes. There's unfortunately little more I can advise in this case :( sorry. Hope it gets resolved soon!

If you are on PC, the game often crashes when you have weapon debris on in the options, try turning that off

I got it to run in vanilla mode before this update by going into my mod manager (vortex), making a new profile, and running it on that with no mods installed in the new profile. I'm saving the original profile (which I'm using now with this F4SE update) for my mods, which are, I'd say, 90% working, but some of the more important ones, to me, are still gone.

check your F4SE version, you might need to update it if you're running Next Gen. Many things should be working as normal now but you'll have to check mod pages individually; I actually haven't updated yet and probably wont for a good long while

@SnailOXD Not sure about that. It does stutter a bit more than before but it's in the spots that would normally crash which is an improvement to me lol. I would have done the same as you though I just had no idea an update was even coming. Gotta get out from under this rock once in a while

It works. Sort of. One of the most useful (IMO) is the place everywhere (anywhere?) mod, which still doesn't work. MCM is a no-go, and I believe AAF is still not working. But, some of the mod authors have been aware and made updates. For now, my game works with mods. I did back up the entire game last year, but I'm hoping to see this work out without having to use the old FO4 version. Oh, and even though Bethesda screwed with it, you'll still need the unofficial patch, otherwise the game is useless.

As long as it's F4SE version 0.6.23 it will be compatible with your version. However don't upgrade as anything newer than that version will not work for either F4SE or Fallout 4

@@SnailOXD I recently updated a couple mods now whenever I load fo4 up into the main menu it crashes buffout points out it was a player character crash it says it can be caused by alot of things like animations skeletons weapons and most commonly awkcr but after spending multiple hours disabling mods and downloading patches I cant find the issue

Idk they made the game have physics to be locked to fps, did they not expect people to run the game above 60fps? 60fps looks so bad once you start playing games over 100. I would play this game, but im waiting till mods get fixed so that i can run the game at 170fps

There's a way to unlock this with a mod, and the mod is compatible with the rollback version of the game. I actually use this exact mod to unlock it and my game runs at 75fps (75hz monitor)

Check your data folder for duplicate Data folder. Look inside; if this has a ton of files also present in the parent folder, you'll need to move these out to the parent folder and empty that duplicate folder out. Any present "cc" files in that duplicate should also be cut and moved Let me know if this works.

@@SnailOXD absolutely. So I'm gonna be that guy that says I never really got into Fallout 3/NV/4 when they launched. No idea why I was just more interested in Fantasy RPG games. So I'm just coming back to the Fallout series now. I can appreciate why so many people are pissed off. Bethesda are an awful company really. If Todd was that appreciative of the modding community he would a) not piss off the modding community with updates to the game that didn't add anything nor fix any problems, more likely create new problems and b) support and show some appreciation for projects like Fallout London and Miami. They need the help and Team Folon said that they haven't been contacted by Beth since they started. That for me is insulting and disgraceful.

Honestly even when the f4se update is complete fallout 4 is dead... Bethesda is going to keep updating the game just like they did with Skyrim, this will lead to so many different version numbers and confusion that people will give up the game just like they did with Skyrim... oof, this sounds bad. I feel like half the mods I have that just fix the game are gonna be borked forever. I don't know if I'm ever gonna update. This whole thing would be worth it if Bethesda actually put in a good faith effort to fix their damn game and render the aforementioned mods redundant. @@joeyboombatz9098 I haven't tried the current version, and I probably won't for a while. However F4SE team has stated that the NG update version is fairly unstable in itself so you can expect *some* sort of issues completely unrelated to F4SE plugin. It's really at-your-own-risk right now and that's part of why I'm just playing it safe and staying on v 1.10.163 Like my personal mod list I just uploaded in my new video is only compatible with 1.10.163 for this reason As far as if your mods will be okay, you can *try* but I 100% expect some mods to have issues with the new F4SE if they're not updated. A lot of changes needed to be made, essentially forcing the Script Extender to take a lot of cues from Starfield's Script Extender (same team, different game)
