"The crazy horse girl never left": Inspired by her lifelong love of horses, Sam Gubera is a farrier in the Bay Area. After five years of running her own business, she’s gained a foothold in the male-dominated field of shoeing horses. "With farriers, you think of an older dude," she says. "Women farriers are more and more common all the time."

Oh man you’re living my dream. Used to have horses for about 10 years when I was young now I’m 23 and trying to figure out what I want to do. Farrying is something that I’ve always thought about doing kinda had it sitting on the back burner but I think I’m ready to make the steps to make my dream a reality. Also don’t have a horse of my own but really I just want to buy a house and eventually have my own so I think this is the right path for me and if my customers let me ride for them that’s a huge bonus! Thank you Sam for being my inspiration!!!

Nice!! Im not a girl, but compared to my brothers, im less robust and focused on education as an adult but when I was younger, my uncle taught me all the basics. Its hard work but its also addicting to try to perfect your craft. My uncle took his time but he learned from my grandpa who just threw them on...if they worked, they worked. Not too much fuss. He also only liked dark hooves. Thought they were more heavy duty.

Sam may I ask what school you went to? And the amount of time your course was? I’ve looked into PCHS being that I live in CA. But also Oklahoma has two schools, 5-star being the one I’d pick. There are others that are much more expensive or offer longer programs, and there are good priced ones that I’ve heard less good things about. So the two I’ve narrowed are 8-weeks at either of those. I’m in So Cal, so I’m traveling either way. I have family in OKC so that’s another reason for going there. But as a father and husband, I’d like to get the most out of the school, in the least amount of time, while not regretting the amount of time and knowledge I’d received. Thank you any advise helps! Appreciate you.

I would learn by apprenticing with a local farrier if you don't have the time or money for a good school. The best school is Heartland -Chris Gregory the owner. The short courses are going to disappoint.

If I'm a horse I would only allow women to work on my hooves.
