Actually what Arab use now days as numbers are Indian numbers and what the western world uses (1, 2, 3, 4...etc) are Arabic numbers. That is odd.

To all you guys saying “who cares if he was Arab. What matters is what he did and not where he is from”. - Ironicly this does not seem to apply when the Arab is suddenly a bad guy? It was invented between the 1st and 4th centuries by Indian mathematicians. The system was adopted in Arabic mathematics (also called Islamic mathematics) by the 9th century. Influential were the books of Al-Khwārizmī[3] (On the Calculation with Hindu Numerals, c. 825) and Al-Kindi (On the Use of the Hindu Numerals, c. 830). The system later spread to medieval Europe by the High Middle Ages.

The thing about knowledge is that it's a process. A long chain of discovery. That's why I believe we shouldn't credit one single demographic for knowledge but rather humanity as a whole. It doesn't matter which group the knowledge came from but rather who and how. Even prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said to his companions, "Seek knowledge! Even if you have to go to the far east of China to obtain it." We can clearly see he doesn't care which group came up with the knowledge. Because we are all the children of Adam and Eve. Allah's most precious creation because humans were made to be more knowledgable than other creations. So, let us all grow together as our father and mother Adam and Eve would've wanted us to.

There's a simple reason it's called the Hindu-Arabic numeral system. They had their origins in Indian 2,300 years ago, but were eventually imported into the Arab caliphates some time in the 9th century. Through the work of mathematicians in the caliphates, whether Persian, Arab, or other, they eventually came to be known to the Europeans. Eventually, they were referred to as Arab numerals, because that's where the Europeans got them from. So if you don't like Hindu reference in the name, you can chalk that up to the naive Europeans not knowing the numerals originated in India. Whereas if you don't like the Arab reference, that is on account of where the Europeans got the numerals from. Either way, it is not inaccurate to call the numerals Hindu-Arabic, and is a good compromise for acknowledging the history of the numerals.

Stop saying everything was invented by Indians, India wasn't the only culture that had mathematics, In the Islamic world at that time it was vast empire included countries like Egypt, Persia, Babylon and many others.. Egypt alone for example is the one invented many things in mathematics more than any other, Pi aka the golden ratio is found all over temples and the pyramids of Egypt Meaning they knew Pi well before every one else they also invented the metric and 0 system and the science of the pyramids can prove that, Pyramids still puzzle scientist today everything is precise to the centimeter. Baghdad was the center of knowledge at that time, they were able to gather all that knowledge from rich cultures and attributed to science and math to what we know today.

I've been scrolling through the comments and I've already read a lot of them but I'm upset because I saw most of them are conflicts between Arabs and Persians. My friends, you should know something. There is no difference between an Arab or a non-Arab except with piety. We are all Muslims. We are one hand. We help each other. We stand for each other and face difficulties. your skin, but unfortunately there are not many people who understand the meaning of this and the enemies (colonialism) have succeeded in separating us and making us fight each other So as an Arab our education didn’t teach me this numbers were Islamic

Actually it's Arabic numerals not Indian because: 1- Al-Khuarizmi developed the Indian numerals(१, २, ३, ४, ५, ६, ७, ८, ९, ०) into two types of fonts of numbers: -the western Arabic(1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 0) -and eastern Arabic(١، ٢ ٣، ٤، ٥، ٦، ٧، ٨، ٩، ٠) So basicaly he created a totaly new type font of numbers. 2- it's exactly like the writting systems just developing, for example: -Phonaecian alphabet developed into Greek then into Latin so if you want to name the Arabic numerals as Indian instead, you must name the Greek alphabet as Phonaecian 3- Al Khuarizmi was a Persian by ancestry but an Arab by culture, language, nationality and ethnicity. Actually I believe that all the people with the haplogroup j(j1+j2) are the same nation and they are all Arabs with different names so Persians Kurds Israelis Turks Azeris Akkadians Assyrians Babylonians Sabaeans Maganese Dilmunese Hijazis Phonaecians Canaanites Amorites Hittites Anatolians are Arabs. There's an akkadian insecription date to 2200bc mention the Arabs.

Al-Khwarizmi wrote "Kitab al hisab al Hindi"( "book of Hindu numericals"). This was translated into Latin by the name "Algorithmi de Numero Indorum" ("Al-Khwarizmi's Indian numericals"). Khwarizmi also wrote "kitab al-jam' wa'l-tafriq al-ḥisāb al-hindī ('Addition and subtraction in Indian arithmetic'). This was another work inspired from Indian mathematics which was largely in use until next 3 centuries. Khwarizmi's "Zij al-Sindhind" (Astronomical tables of Siddhanta) is another work consisting of approximately 37 chapters on astronomical calculations based on Indian astronomical methods. The word 'Sindhind' is literally means Hindus living along the Sindhu river Al Khwarizmi himself called it ilm ul Hind ("knowledge of Hindus"). But we call it "Algorithm" . But western historians deliberately denied Hindus the credit & now Islamists are taking credit

You should be greceful that he include the name of what he's developing into a better and useful version. If you made an electricity, and builds an electricity car, does that mean that the car is yours? Just because you made the first component? utilize your logic please. Al-Khwirizmi learn a lot, developing something that are already exist into a very different and better version of it, just to made a greatness invention for human life. And you Indians claiming that it were yours? Somehow I found a comment from an indian guy, that the arabs invade Indians and stole their knowledge, like what in the fairy tales is this? Middle eastern peoples will always travel around the world to spread Islamic religion and life, and also in use for searching better knowledge. Why you Indians can't take some peace and accept islam? You guys really hate them huh? Doesn't your religion tells you to be a peace and mind person? Your gods tell you this didn't? I'm not surprised if you were ignorant about this, since you're Indians, they will never accept any good aspect from islam, not even religion, not even their invention, not even their contribute to the world, and not even their kindness.

what an interesting vlog! i have few comments though: 1. I would suggest that you do another vlog explaining the concept of Arabic numbers (1 having one angle, 2 having two...etc). 2. 1,2,3...etc are what we call “arabic numbers” and (١.٢.٣...) are the Indian numbers; you can obtain them by adding an Arabic keyboard and switch to numerical values. 3. When I was a child we were taught that Indian numbers are what we used to call “Arabic number” and Arabic numbers are what we used to call “English numbers”.

true. AL translates to the and ABU translates to "father of", and IBN translates to "son of". it is not common in the western world to be identified this way, but this is how arabic nick names and family names are given. the "father of" is just a nickname, used PERHAPS (my own theory) to identify and distinguish a person from his cousin or brother who probably had the same name. so his name translates to: Father of Abdullah, Mohammad, son of Musa, who is from a place called Khawarizm so the guy's first name is: mohammad his father's name is: Musa (Moses) his oldest son's name is: Abdullah (servant of god) (sadly my father nickname refers to my older brother, not me). his last name is: Khawarizmi (meaning: a guy from a place called Khawarizm). this is still in use today by arabs. a man's nickname is usually "father of + name of his oldest son". however, nicknames are not mentioned on official documents. but official documents will mention his father's name. arabs dont carry a middle-name. even if the father's name was a strictly masculine name, women will still have their father's name written after their first name in official documents. the full name will just be like: boy's/girl's first name + father's name + family name nowadays, family names aren't always assigned based on the person's home country. last names can be assigned based on different things. you will find people whose family name is a profession (probably the profession of some great great grand father) such as: miller, tailor, soup maker, teacher, scholar, speaker, preacher, carpenter, black-smith, gold smith, etc. some people's family name will refer to something totally meaningless: water-melon, cake, olive... some people's family name still refer to their home place from several past generations such as: egyptian, damascus, algeria, morocco, arabia, hope that helps.

Glad to see some1 said what i was thinking! i know of this issue due to researching it for my book. my 1st vid posted talks about the book if you're interested. And The only thing Persian here is maybe the word Hindu itself lol (Hindu isn't really a VEDIC term). Keep in mind Vedas maybe wrote down over 5,000 years ago, but the more advanced ancients didn't need to write them down well before that age, but the ancient societies seem to be dismissed or deleted since modern theory disagrees and/or doesn't know much of them and their advanced/ancient existence. Anyway; nearly all significant maths was already known and taught long ago in the Vedas. It was called Ganit. For example, the concept of zero was originally called Shunya, or zero void. The symbol of zero and the decimal system was described in the Vedas (for example Atharva-Veda 5.15, 1-11) and also described is how the number increases by 10 by writing zero in front of it. The first usage of Pi also came from Vedic teachings. A (e.g. Rig-Veda 1.105.17) formula to find the area of a circle is mentioned showing that the Rishis knew of pi, approximating it to be equal to 22/7. The word Bijaganitam means “the other mathematics” and was given to math like, for example, what we call algebraic forms of computation. Eventually another notation that people called “Indian numerals” evolved from the Brahmi numerals and assumed common use. But under the dictatorship of Mohammad in the 7th/8th centuries, Arabs invaded and conquered the land from India, across northern Africa, to Spain. Most of these Vedic texts originated and remained in India and so, in the following centuries (through the 14th) the Arabs destroyed many texts. But since they pursued some arts and sciences, they came across some of this math and change some names. For example, they coined the term Algebra when it came into common use throughout the Arabian empire, which extended from India to Spain. Europeans later used the name "Arabic notations," because they got them from the Arabians. However, the Arabians called them Hindu figures (Al-Arqan-Al-Hindu) and they referred to math itself as Hindi-sat. The Vedas are so scientific, detailed, and advanced that it’s difficult to try to talk about the many examples they have. This is true not only for the Bhagavata, but even for the first four Vedas alone. They have many sub sections. There are multiple sections just on how to speak, understand, and teach it. One section (Ayur) deals with anatomy, physiology, hygiene, sanitary science, surgery, etc. Another section (Dhanur) teaches ancient military science for outward self-defense and from within. Another section (Ghandarva) teaches the science and art of music. Another section (Sthapatya) teaches engineering, architecture and all significant branches of mathematics in general. And remember the examples I was able to provide are in spite of the fact that around 94% of the original four Vedas are unavailable today. Now ask yourself, how could these teachings be there for countless millennia, which include times where so-called scientists today claim “primitive” man was the highest species that reigned, when only now are we starting to have (some) knowledge of these things using modern science.

Al Khwarizhmi acknowledged in his works that they were based on the "kitab-al Hind", the book of Hindu numerals and mathematics. Most Arabic mathematicians freely acknowledged that their work was based on Hindu texts. The so-called "Arabic numerals" of 1, 2, 3, 4... are NOT Arabic but Hindu. At best, the Arabs were somewhat honest transmitters of knowledge from India to the West. Similar is the case with many other "arabic inventions", including Damascus steel which was nothing but wootz steel from India.

Muhammad al-Fasari translated brahmagupta's brahma-sphuta bhashyam into Arabic. Another, Al-Khwarizmi, had some of Brahmagupta's findings al-Jamwal-Tafaric. B Hisal-al-Hind (al-Jam wal-tafriq bi hisal-al-Hind ) was published as a book called Addition and Subtraction in Indian Arithmetic. These Arabic books were translated into Europe centuries later and translated into Latin as Algorithmi de numero indorum, which spread through these books by Brahma Gupta and his contemporary great mathematicians throughout the world. But until recently, the Arabs and Europeans had propagated them as their own inventions.

One thing really baffles me is that the Chinese were in contact with the middle-east for a long time. But they didn't adopt the Arabic numerals and algebra. As far as I know, Indian Buddhist monks went to China during the 5th century and brought Buddhism with them. Why the Chinese never picked up algebra and the modern-day numerical system is either a mystery or a huge lost opportunity for the Chinese mathematicians and engineers to further their knowledge in their respected professions.
@youbigtubership
@youbigtubership 2 года назад
It's puzzling, yes, but I think there is an answer. Your question is a component of the 'Needham question', that is, why the scientific method didn't bloom in China, but in the West. There are other components and I think one of them is understanding Chinese cultural pride in their language's ideograms, the aspect which they refer to when they say their civilization is the oldest continuous civilization on earth. The intense memory work involved in learning the Chinese language is a source of huge cultural strength, but it makes for pride too, which makes accepting things like 'barbarian' mathematical symbols more difficult. It is no wonder that China has blossomed since adopting these numerals, but given the ethno-communist militaristic pride which now frightens so many people, I also reckon humanity has been incredibly lucky that China didn't get modern technological and military advantages before the West.

You could gather he is not Arab just from his name Al-Khwarizmi. Khwarazm had it’s capitals in Urgench and Khiva.

scishow: Check about the Indian Astronomers, who were far advanced than others

Fibonacci studied mathematics at Bejaïa in Algeria. Arabic countries and North Africans write their numbers differently. The numbers we use today were transformed by North Africans then later on entered Europe. For example the two in Arabic isn't written like this 2 but North Africans always wrote them this way.

Incomplete narrative. Numbers and advance math was used in India in astronomy, building temples and monuments. Brahmagupta in 7th century compiled bija ganit what is called algebra. Reference: archive.org/details/Brahmasphutasiddhanta_Vol_1/page/n17/mode/1up

Very appreciated to remember the original founders and contributers in today's science. Job well done, there are many more examples though. Fibonacci numbers originate in India, and were taught in Algeria to Leonardo from Pisa, who brought the knowledge to Europe. Another great mathematician is Arryabattha from India, who invented the zero and the "." for the decimal system. This happened in the time that the Romans were counting with letters. And the Greeks proved to be clueless about this refinement.

The Arabic numerals are now called as Hindu-Arabic numerals, may be they should be called Hindu-Persian numerals if that's the case.

Why even persian? Full "algebra" was well-developed in India even before Arabs/Persians invaded India. What is the Persian contribution other than translating?

It's a shame that this history isn't taught in public math class. I think if kids understand where the information they are using comes from, there is more a context to connect with.

Its quite funny that the Indians want to take credit for algebra and all of his inventions including modern linear and quadratic equation solving systems, algorithms etc because he just borrowed one particular digit which is 0. And Al kharizmi always told people that its Indian numerical system. He also wrote a whole book about what he learned from Indian scholars including the digit 0.

There are numerous texts in India dating prior to Al Kharizmi with solutions of linear & quadratic equations, most likely to be came across by him or other Persian/Arabic scholars translating those from Sanskrit. Anyways, who cares about history now but we should not forget. Because if we do, we will drag Arabs/Turks to ICJ for the crimes done against the 'kaafirs' of Indian subcontinent in the name of Islam thoughout medieval period.

Lmao who gave quadratic equation two zeros formula which is still used todays and what about the works of brahmagupta? You just can't say that he could get his value by himself? What about lemmas? Indian say that because Muslim dont give them credit and if you mention this name they would get angry. You can see yourself,Reply section is the best eye witness. Like they acting so ignorant that they say quadratic equation by dharacharya and Function of Zeros by brahamgupta were nothing. This is most stupidest thing if you know little math. Whole math is alive because of borrowing and sharing

Yep, he studied, translated and documented Hindu numeric and mathematical terms/systems; so merchants and traders in Persia could use the same, especially because Hind was the biggest trading partner of Persia in those times. You should make a show to talk about Aryabhatt, and other ancient mathematicians of ancient India.

Hindu Arabic Numerals are actually Indian Numerals because Arabic script is from Right to left but Brahmi script is from Left to right from which Hindu Arabic numerals originated.

Very late to the party, but you did not do enough research there at the end. For simplification, there were 2 sets of numerals, Hindi (١٢٣) and Arabic (123). Hindi was used initially, but Al Khawarizmi created the Arabic numerals (123) based on angles. Arabic numerals were adopted in the west and are now referred to as "English" numbers, whereas Hindi was more prevelant in Arab regions becoming the "Arabic" numerals.

@@ingegnerelibyana2465 Correction *cause the arabs who learnt the other west the HINDU NUMERALS not the arab numerals cause we hindu created the no. System. I am eager to see your answer if I am wrong . It is loud and clear that europe knew the number system from arab but from where arabs got this 😂😂. Its simple common sense. And yes for your kind info if at that time arabs didn't transported the no system created by my hindu ancestors. We hindus would still remain to practice our number system . Its doesn't matter to us that you transported hindu numerals to europe 😂😂😂.
