This character was ahead out of it's time. Back in the 90's only a very small % of football fans who went to games were like this now they're the majority as all the working class fans especially the young ones have been priced out
Sadly true, there's a Ron Manager bit sitting in the stands talking about Football in nostalgic terms that may as well be a eulogy for the game Pre-93/93.
Yep sadly that’s true. The only ones who can afford to go to Premiership games now are the wealthy middle class Hooray Henry’s, especially dons south. Just look at the crowds at the England games. It’s all management types who’ve secured a few England tickets through some corporate jolly or sweetener. I remember when I used to go to the Birmingham city matches way back in the early 90s when were in the old division 2 and kids could get in for a quid. That’s why I don’t even bother with football now, it’s all money and the few that can afford it, I don’t even watch England play anymore, which is why I’m more into Rugby league now..
@@matty6848 Many real football fans watch nonleague now..where you can gain entrance buy programme then have a beer & pie and have change out of £20..👍
@@matty6848 Haven't bothered with footie for a long time either. The Prem , for me, was the downfall and after ten years or so of it my love for the game had mostly disappeared. Last match i went to was 2008. More rugby union myself.
I literally sat in front of 'this guy' once. Not long after hull city got their new stadium and there was a surge in new supporters, although we were in the old 3rd division still. Was watching a crappy midweek evening match against Barnsley and the bloke behind me would not shut up comparing every players abilities vs Beckham! Player gets tackled - loses the ball 'he's no Beckham'. Player takes a half decent shot at goal 'he's a budding Beckham'. Hilarious and annoying all at the same time.
I had a friend who used to interrupt every foot convo we were having with "Beckham's a real talisman isn't he." He said it like he was saying the wisest thing ever. I didn't notice at first but when I did I laughed so much. We liked the guy so we never let him know we knew that he only ever said one thing. Man Utd fan from West London in case you were wondering.
There is a definite symmetry between this and the 'I'll get me coat' sketches. They're both about someone trying to fit in with people from a different class and not understanding the rules.
When I ran pubs we used to instruct staff who were uninterested in football to join any football related conversation with 'they need a big man up front and more creativity in midfield'. It was literally a 'light the blue touch-paper' comment and guaranteed to cement their place in the football commenting community.
True that. It's not just his acting either; saw him do stand-up at a Just the Tonic night at the Old Vic in Nottingham in the late 90's. He was utterly brilliant, piss-funny, and nice enough to talk to punters afterwards. Lovely bloke :)
@@SiFiClark Harry Enfield always seemed to be jealous because he was middle class and tried to make out he was disadvantaged. Paul Whitehouse had the working class accents nailed down, his unlucky Alf sounds like me 😂. Kathy Burke's Oasis Manc accent was soooopeerb
Agreed. If I see one more 7ft bearded southern jogging enthusiast in a Liverpool shirt giving it the big un, I swear I'll get a stepladder and cut off his bloody man bun with my nan's rusty shears.
Sad reality is they the middle-classes who jumped on to football after Euro 96 as it became also fashionable have become the majority as the game has been Marketed for such clientel at a lot of premier league clubs esp the more successful ones as the hardcore working classes have been shafted and priced out. Hence why at most premier league grounds esp the newer ones the atmosphere is generally is Flat, staged, stale.
"Youre so detatched from reality! Lets talk about the football!" Its so twisted how much our society is invested in football. Never understood why its so important to some adults. Theres something very tribal about it and a way for some people to express raw emotion
It's quite normal to get into soccer when there's a world cup on. Whatever the sport, if there's an England team or a Great Britain team playing in a tournament, I will watch it.
It's symptomatic at any club that's had any sort of success in the last 30 years. Which is why Paul Whitehouse doesn't have much to worry about being a Spurs fan
Case in point being Jeremy Clarkson. For years he openly stated that he didn't like football and now he's claiming he's supported Chelsea since he was 10
My club is currently in the Championship. I know it sounds strange but part of me doesn’t want to get promoted. Don’t miss Var the tourists and getting thumped by Man City twice a season.
They all turned up at Reading when we went up on 2 occaisions. Buggered off when we went down. Pain in the arse...... Goto the away games as well, Arsenal were by far the worst. This was really close to the mark for them.
Get your point - genuinely hope the Royals get back this year, playing good football. The first year you got up under Coppell was a revelation - Doyle etc were superb. I was there for our cup game and did stay until the end if only to see Chamakh score which was something of a rarity. I remember Elm Park - proper ground unless it rained!
@@rogerramjet5302 cheers mate. as sad as it was to see the back of Elm Park, we desperatly needed an upgrade to progress. To finish that high in the Premier League was disappointing. Missed out on Europe on goal difference, then got relegated the following season. Clubs like Chelsea taking our players for next to nothing and shoving them in the reserves (eg Kitson) hurt us badly.
@@Clem_Fandango11 tell me about it! Ashley Cole, Fabregas, Giroud - admittedly some of those departures were from the club but then add in Van Persie, Clichy, Nasri etc and we’ve been a feeder club too. Youve had some great players over the years with Quinn, Gilkes, Lita, Long, Hislop etc. Showing my age but I do miss grounds like Highbury and Elm Park - remember a match many moons ago when you sang to us ‘are you Swindon in disguise?’. Brilliant but factually inaccurate as none of us bought livestock or wore wellington boots!
Chelsea worse once they got the minted Russian. I know someone I was at school with who definitely wore a Hammers top in P.E. but denied it, when We met up at a school reunion, and told us he was a season ticket holder at the chavs. There's a few like that.
Allo, Dave Angel here, I tell you, these hand artist fake football fans, they really get up my hooter. Drive me completely radio rental. What we need is more completely working class, Streetwise characters, tracksuits, baseball caps, getting zapped out of your banger on drugs, mugging grannies, Bosh! Over the head. Never done me no harm. Lavely... 😐
I knew a guy at work like this. Constantly going on about his love for our local team, constantly talking about football to people who clearly had no interest in it and then mocking them for having no interest in it. Then one day one of the older guys, who was a through and through true fan of the local team, had enough and tested him in front of everyone to assess his merit as a fan. Stuff like "how many times have you been to a game" (never it turned out), "what do you think of the new signings" (couldn't answer). Watching this self professed football fanatic shrivel in front of a proper fan was hilarious.
@@TheHeeksy Great to hear from you Rob. Hope youre doing well. Just glad to be alive at our age. At least 40 years since ive been called Bran. Pleased to see the Hammers prospering.
