Andy, I wanted to personally thank you for saving me about $280. My refrigerator repairman, whom I trust, was going to charge me $295 to add a heating element inside the door panel to melt the frozen line. He was convinced that there was no other remedy. I searched online and found your site within a couple of minutes. For under $15 and in under 5 minutes, Ice surrender took care of it. UNBELEIVEABLE! Something so simple and easy. So happy you thought of it. I wish you continued success.

This is a great device! My water dispenser regularly freezes up and I have added a heater, resealed it, replaced the flapper, regularly thaw the line either by turning off the refrigerator or using a hair dryer. I still had issues. I just got this device a few days ago and it will get the water flowing again in less than a minute. The problem is the ice build up a few inches into the line...this device is able to reach it and get the warm water directly where you need it!

Andy, thanks for sharing your solution to a very common problem. Most of the time you end up in the phone calling a service rep, because you have no idea what is causing the problem, much less a solution to it. Even if your “service rep” knows this is the easiest, fastest and cheaper way to go, he is going to give you the run around to get into your checkbook. Not only your gadget is inexpensive, you get the free advise on RU-vid, next day delivery (included in the price) and you get to keep it for future use or help a neighbor with the same problem. You are very down to earth guy with a real desire to help. Thank You so much.

Great tool for clearing frozen water line in my GE refrigerator. I have seen many solutions to this issue but most cost & I was not ready to spend anymore on this shaky unit. Water line was clear in less than 10 minutes from mailbox. Highly recommend!

Like many people, my GE refrigerator's water dispenser was constantly freezing up, making it inoperable. I tried a number of solutions for this; 1. Service call from a GE repariman who defrosted the line with a hair dryer. This was a quick $150 down the drain, 2. Defrosting it myself with a hair dryer. I managed to melt the ice dispenser unit in no time which led to another $150 service call, 3. Leaving the freezer door open while I taped sheet plastic over the opening to the freezer itself. This worked, but it was a pain in the neck, 4. Investigated installing a water line defrosting coil. The repairman I called said that he couldn't warranty this work because these coils burn out about fifty percent of the time. I saw the Ice Surrender tool on RU-vid and figured that I would roll the dice and spend about $13 to purchase this device, (including shipping), even though I am generally a skeptic about these kinds of gadgets. I followed the directions on this video and in less than one minute I cleared my water line. So simple! The chances that it will freeze again in the future are good, but I don't really care. I know that I can solve the problem myself in no time using the Ice Surrender tool. Take it from me; if you have frozen water dispenser problems this is the right solution.

Hi Andy, Sorry for the tremendous delay. Yes - it will work if the line is frozen for the inside the door dispenser as well. I personally have not seen these freeze though. Works like a charm. Thank you for offering this product to the public. What is up with GE? What makes the freezing happen i the first place? The freezing of the line wasn't an issue when it was new. Now it happens over and over again.
@andyf80
@andyf80 8 лет назад
Hi Mark, I'm so glad it worked well for you! Thanks for the follow up. The issue is due to the age of the fridge as there is insulation that breaks down inside the freezer door. This is one of GE's more embarrassing design flaws and one would think they'd bend over backward to assist customers with this issue as it is really really bad advertising for them. They do make a dispenser heater which requires a bit of work to install and requires tapping in to the factory wiring harness. In my repair business I've seen about 50% success with this repair due to bad insulation or having the heater burn out. For my repair business, I won't warranty this repair as it stems from poor design. The part runs about $45 and then around $100 (or more) for the install. GE really should at a minimum send this heater out for free to customers, but I'm told they no longer will do this.

@GraceAppliance 6 лет назад
Hi Randy, I'm glad it worked well for you. Unfortunately, (and as you know) you're fighting bad design. Some have had luck with adding some type of insulation to the inside of the freezer directly behind the dispenser area, raising their freezer temp slightly, and making sure to keep food from resting against the door when closed. Also, you may check the ice door flapper to make sure that has a good seal there. You can do this by shining a flashlight through where the ice drops down while looking upwards from the outside of the door to light to come through. If you see light there, you have an air leak and a new flapper is in order. I hope this helps some.
@randybruce2737

my fridge is not dispensing water but doing ice and cracking ice, just yesterday, I checked all pumps and connection, all them is working fine. Here is my last step to be done to resolve this problem.
@GraceAppliance
@GraceAppliance 5 лет назад
Hi Mehmet, Sorry to heat about your problems with your dispenser. Please check that your icemaker is still making ice. Just because it is coming out of the door does not mean that the icemaker is still creating new ice cubes. If the icemaker is still making cubes, but it is not dispensing water it’s quite possible that your dispenser is frozen inside the door. The easiest way to check if this is the case is to insert an 8-12” zip tie in to the dispenser where the water enters the cup. If the zip tie does not insert fully in to the dispenser, that is the ice blocking the water line. Here is a video showing this: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-rcZq96CKeTE.html I hope this helps and let me know if you have any questions. Thanks! Andy

Andy, anxious to try it, but would rather fix the entire problem...Is the heater the only option?
@andyf80
@andyf80 7 лет назад
Carolyn Rhodes hi, unfortunately due to the fact that the issue comes from the breakdown of insulation over time inside the freezer door directly behind the dispenser, the only actual 'fix' is to replace the entire freezer door. If it's worth it to you to roll the dice on a heater you can try this, but depending on the severity of the insulation breakdown you may or may not have success. I've seen spotty success in my appliance repair travels (40-50% callbacks) and for that reason no longer warranty a heater install. The heater heats only the outer part of the dispenser tube, but the ice typically will form 4-6 inside the door so the heater is often ineffective. Often you can clear a line once and not have the issue again for years which makes me wonder if the heater is more a placebo than effective. If water is run through the line often (many people in the house vs a single person) helps more than anything for keeping the line clear long term. Another trick you may try is to adhere a square of foam or styrofoam to the freezer door inside directly behind the dispenser area, being sure to keep frozen food from touching the wall also helps. I wish it were a different answer.
@ckr56
@ckr56 7 лет назад
Andy, thank you. We just found that if you just leave an 18" piece of weed eater cord up in the dispenser tube, when it freezes up, use long nose to pull it out, it breaks up the freeze and the water works every time....will never buy GE again--they accept all the 'whiz, pops, & motor noises' as 'normal'! Ridiculous....
@MarthaVeronicaRios

Does this work for a Whirlpool refrigeratior?
@GraceAppliance
@GraceAppliance 6 лет назад
Hi Martha, Yes it will. However, the most common refrigerators by far with frozen dispensers are GE side by sides because of a design flaw. I’d just be doubly sure it is in fact a frozen water like inside the freezer door. One trick you can try is to insert a 8-12” zip tie inside the dispenser water line. If it does not insert all the way, it’s a frozen water line and this tool can defiantly help thaw it. Let me know if you have any questions! Andy

@GraceAppliance
@GraceAppliance 6 лет назад
Hi LoebRules, Sorry to hear you're having issues with your ice maker water. If you're certain that the line is frozen, yes it is great for that too. Getting access to the frozen part of the line is the most difficult part. Many fridges you will need to remove the ice maker in order to get access to the ice maker water supply line. Keep in mind too there may be other reasons why water may not be getting to the ice maker. Let me know if you have any questions. Thanks! Andy

amazing tool, but before i buy one, i wanted to make sure this is my problem and not something else. the water dispenser was working fine one day and then the just the next morning it wasnt.. the lights turn on, ice machine works, but when i undid the filter, and tried to dispense water, still nothing happened, nor did water come into the fridge where the filter sits...is this normal
@GraceAppliance
@GraceAppliance 6 лет назад
Hi Faiz, If you have a GE side by side the water will not work with the filter removed so that sounds normal. There is a handful of things that could cause this symptom, but if you will try this: insert a 6-8inch zip tie in to the dispenser hose where the water enters your glass. If the zip tie inserts fully, your problem is not a frozen dispenser and this tool would not help. However, if the zip tie does not insert fully, you’ve diagnosed your issue as a frozen dispenser and the tool would thaw this out quickly. I hope this helps!

I just received your tool from Amazon. I didn’t notice any resistance in the water line. Would that mean it is another problem other than it being frozen?
@GraceAppliance
@GraceAppliance 5 лет назад
Hi Cara, I’m sorry I missed your comment. It is definitely possible it could be another issue. If your icemaker is still making cubes, you can rule out a clogged water filter and filter housing (I.e. what the filter screws in to). The other possible causes would be a failed water valve (which is separate from the water valve for the icemaker), a frozen water reservoir inside the refrigerator section, a failed switch at the dispenser (but if the ice still dispenser you can rule this one out too), a bad control board not sending power to the valve, or simply it is frozen but just further than the IceSurrender can reach. You can confirm a frozen water line by removing the kick panel at the base of the freezer hinge and you’ll see a water line that can be disconnected from a coupling. With the line disconnected you can attempt to get water and it water shoots out this line then, it’s a frozen water line in the door. Be sure to leave a towel down to catch the water obviously. Let me know if you have any questions. Also, there is a 30 day return policy so you can certainly return the IceSurrender if you wanted to do that and I’m sorry it didn’t work in your instance.

GE Side-by-Side ONLY - Refrigerator Repair Videos Thank you so much for the education. Would most of your tutoring apply to a Samsung side-by-side?
@GraceAppliance
@GraceAppliance 5 лет назад
You'r'e most welcome. Yes, the idea is the exact same on a Samsung except you may not have a connection near the freezer hinge as I mentioned to test for a frozen line inside the door. However, I have not seen a Samsung with a frozen dispenser before. I don't think they struggle with this issue. However, I have seen many of them with frozen water reservoirs inside the fridge section. The issue is that the fridge may be set to 37'F, but cool air sinks and the bottom part of the fridge may be below 32'F and thus freezes the reservoir. You can definately heat this part with a hair dryer if you were patient enough, but you may try raising the temp in the fridge section slightly (38F or 39F) and then be patient for a week or so. If this resolves it, you had a frozen reservoir. Let me know if you have any questions. Also, if you wanted to send your model number, i'm happy to have a look at your schematic and fine tune my response based on what the usual suspects are based on what i've seen. Thanks!

@GraceAppliance 6 лет назад
Hi Samuel, I’m sorry I missed your comment. If you’re still having issues with a frozen icemaker water line this tool works like a champ on those too. Depending on the model of refrigerator you may find it easier to remove the icemaker to get easier access to the ice maker water fill tube, but this tool allows you to insert the tubing in to the icemaker fill tube to where it’s frozen and squirt hot water directly on the ice. Thanks!

Hi, I’m sorry to hear it did not work in your instance. Either your line is frozen further inside the door or you have a more severe issue going on obviously. To confirm a frozen water line in the door you can remove the kick panel at the bottom of the fridge (on a GE side by side) and disconnect the water line from the connector (you must depress the collar around the tube as you’re pulling the water line away from the connector). Then, with a towel to catch the water, you can attempt to get water from the dispenser. If water comes out of the tube, you have a frozen dispenser in the door. Let me know if you have any questions. Also, there is a 30 day no questions asked return window for the Icesurrender. Please do send it back for a full refund.

But if you have an underlying problem with a really poor fridge design, as I do, you will find you have to use the tool once or twice a day because the water line keeps freezing. I have been looking at all the online posts on resolve this problem and have tried them all: - Insulate the inside of the freezer door. Didn't work. - Replace the ice cube flapper. Didn't work. - Stick a piece of weed eater cord in the water line and pull it out when the line freezes. Not a good solution. The line in the water hose actually causes it to freeze more quickly each time. Then it's really hard to pull the line out. And I don't feel really great about having an unsanitary piece of plastic hanging from the water line. Bottom line is this is a poor solution and causes the line to freeze again within minutes. So today I have installed the GE WR49X10173 water line heater. This was no easy feat as the instructions are crappy but there's a good RU-vid video that helped. Although beware that your wiring scheme and colors may be different than what's shown on the video. And I had a really hard time getting the wires to connect with the splice connectors. I had to expose the wires to finally get them to connect. Will this solve the problem? Still too soon to tell. But the next thing is to get a new door that has the proposer design and insulation. We didn't purchase this fridge - it was in our new house when we bought it. But I've had nothing but trouble with this water line for the last 2 1/2 years. I will never buy a GE fridge for this reason. It is a poor design and they don't seem to care to solve it. Ice Surrender is a really handy tool and will at least allow you to quickly unfreeze the water line. Before I found it I used to spent 30 minutes with my hair dryer and the freezer door open to get the water working. So it's great from that perspective. But the real issue is with GE and their lousy design. Unforgivable for a company that is supposed to be a leader in the industry.

Thanks for the comment Dale. What a hassle you've had with that fridge! You literally have tried it all it appears. Outside of raising the temperature of the freezer slightly and making sure that there isn't any food touching the freezer door when it's shut, that's about it. I've wondered myself if the ambient temperature of the room has a bearing on the waterline freezing more often, but I have had as many orders from warmer climates as I have from colder climates so I don't think that's an issue. I'll also be curious to see if the newer GE's will have this same problem 5-10 years from now. GE has recently been bought out by Haier Appliance a Chinese company which does not have a good reputation by any stretch - so I don't see good things for GE's future. I hope the heater kit does the trick for you. Also, i've heard of people leaving the door light on full time to produce a bit more heat near the dispenser, but again - not an ideal solution. Personally, I feel like GE should be proactively sending their fridge owners a free heater kit & IceSurrender with install instructions and an apology note. Seems like a really cheap way to gain some good will from your existing customer base. I've tried telling GE this, but who's really listening? You'd think a few million bad reviews might get their attention.

Have you tried lowring the temp a little bit? that worked for me, If your freezer is full, you need to lower the temp. since you don't need higher temp to keep things frozen.

@@lillianj.torres9538 freezer aren't just designed to keep things frozen, they are designed to stop bacterial growth for long term storage. That means a freezer must be set no higher than 0 f. Spoilage bacteria grows aboven 0 f and will double its rate of growth every 5 degrees above 0. Keeping food for long term storage is certainly more important than increasing the temperature to get water at a dispenser. Freezer 0f and fresh food compartment must be set between 36 and 38f as pathogens grow at 41f and a fresh food below 36 will freeze vegetables. Middle or normal settings on refrigeratos are calibrated for freezer to be - 2 to 0 f and fresh food 36 to 38f

MY GE refrigerator is the worst appliance I’ve ever owned. Not only does it freeze the water line but the fan cakes up with frost and sounds like a buzz saw. What a joke of a project.

It’s a shame isn’t it?! GE got bought out by Haier recently...which as we all know is known for quality. :( GE is sinking fast.
