Very good video on locations. One method I never see demonstrated is simply carving or splitting off a fatwood "match". Everyone carries a lighter today. They are smart, practical, reliable, and lightweight. Instead of making all those scrapings, especially if there's high wind, why not just slice off a thin stick that will light easily and stay lit. Slide it into well stacked kindling and your done. I've been doing this for decades. If you have to use a ferro rod, use scrapings to light larger fatwood stick/s for a longer initial burn.

A little late to the comments on this video since it was posted a year ago. Very good info! Some of the negative comments on your appearance is petty in my opinion. You even had the decency to explain why you grew your hair out for a good cause to donate to children. What a wonderful exposee on fatwood ! Very well explained. I wasn't aware of Hemlock having flammable resin. I have stayed clear of Hemlock wood because I was told it was poisonous to use when cooking over open flame. The fact it is a source of firestarter is wonderful. I know Spruce produces a resin that when dry looks like sugar but is highly flammable. I have not seen Spruce fatwood. I am not certain if the flammable resin is water soluble. Most of the resin I have seen comes from fresh damage to the tree or sawn limbs and can be collected in liquid form. I usually keep a bottle on me for collecting Spruce resin or sap. I have also heard that pines that do not bear cones are less likely to produce resin or fatwood. It seems to be true but I can't be certain yet. I do tend to gravitate towards pines that bear cones in hopes to find good fatwood. Your comment on the sun is quite interesting and stands to reason. Thank you for your highly informative video, it is the best I have seen to date. There is a girl named Slisa Schell, I think, who has a channel on you tube that does nothing but hunt fatwood. You might check her out. You may have to try different spellings of her name because I do not know if my spelling is correct. It could be shlisa or schlisa or something like that. You cut into the tree to get your fat wood, In the spring the sap comes out of the tree and that is a good source of fire starting material, I use it when I go backpacking in the spring and with little to none it will start a fire easily. No need to cut into a tree

We call the dead branches pine knots that extend into the trunk of the tree

I put an "Uncle Kens Flat Candle" and a Ferral rod . Always get fire started .

Excellent video! Informative with awesome examples. I would caution about widow-makers when axing a dead tree but that example tree was a treasure trove of fire making materials and now I’m excited to look at my area with new eyes!

OK, so you make fine fuzzy scrapings of fatwood to start a fire. How differently do you process the fatwood for your tinder kit, other kits, fire starting in your home, etc?

Using a cutting tool amid the triangle is a no no no.

19:00 probably shouldn't holster your axe like that with the blade exposed facing forward. Assuming your axe is kept razor sharp, you're asking for a potentially serious injury.

Suggestion when capturing video, always hold the camera horizontal. Every TV screen, monitor screen, computer screen, movie theater screen, are orientated horizontally. In videos where the camera is vertical (portrait orientation), as are most of these, then played back on the aforementioned devices the left one-third, and right one-third of the screen is cut off, causing the video to appear as a stick video, tall and narrow. We humans, maybe all lifeforms, view our surroundings considerably more horizontally than vertically. Holding a cellphone or camera vertically the video produced is similar to looking through a tight keyhole or wearing horse blinders. In addition to seeing the entire scene the camera person must pan more left and right which creates much camera movement; not good. Also, viewed videos captured vertically becomes spatially disorientating.
