In this video I’ll share the top 4 solutions to this error, hopefully at least one will work for you.
Now the first workaround is to change the clip’s file extension, but to be safe, make a copy of the file and change the file extension of the copy. I changed the file extension from .mp4 to .mts. But you can try a different video extension, such as .mov. After making the change go ahead and import the clip with the changed file extension, it certainly worked for me.
The second solution is to move the file to another folder. All you need to do is create a folder within your media folder and copy over your video clip. Again, restart Premiere Pro and import the video from that new folder. This was another winning solution for me.
If these two solutions don’t work on your machine, you might need to re-encode the video clip to create a new version of the video file.
I use Handbrake, a free video conversion app. You drag and drop your clip onto Handbrake, choose a preset to match your project, then select the output location and file name. You can even keep the file extension the same as the original and then start the encoding. Once ready, import the file into your Premiere Prom project and sequence.
Although these three methods worked for me, I also know users suggest deleting the Media Cache folder in Premiere Pro. You can do this from the media cache tab in Premiere Pro's preferences, or you can take a note of the media cache location in the media cache tab and then navigate to that location and delete the media cache folder. The next time you open Premiere Pro, the app will create a new Media Cache folder and files.
Although many people recommend this solution online, including on Adobe’s help and support community pages, this didn’t work for me. Neither deleting the cache from within Premiere Pro or doing it manually. However, this method has worked for many others, possibly it’ll also work for you.
