As a 16 year old, i used to get into the Cavern and watch John, Paul, George and Pete play the lunchtime sessions and just knew they would be big....didnt realise just how big. Im now 79 and visited the Dakota for the 1st time last year and broke my heart. I didnt feel embarrassed at people looking at my tears, it was so emotional for me as ive loved this guy for over 63 years and will love him til I pass. R.I.P J.W.L ❤
@andydixon2980 hi Andy I have so many memories. The band used to stop for a break and while we all queued up for pop and ready salted crisps, they would piss off to the grapes then returned slightly inebriated lol. They had an aura that no other had. I was at the lunchtime session Mr Epstein was there to see them for the 1st time and Mr Lennon basically ridiculed him to an inch of his life and Mr Epstein took it with good heart. That's what won him over. The 1st session Ringo took over, certainly wasn't the way the press portrayed it. There was no protests, no fighting. When they came onto the stage, John announced they had changed their drummer. We all knew who Ringo was so he didn't née an introduction. The crowd were quiet then they kicked off with I saw her standing there....that was it. I also loved The Searchers too. In later years, I became good friends with John McNally and then Bill Harry. I have lots and lots of stories, I could reminisce for days.
I met and chatted with John Lennon in L.A. in the early 70's during one of his splits from Yoko...John was a Gentleman & a friend & I miss him very much
We chatted about the Beatles for a bit & how I'd been a fan....we chatted about little things....not anything spectacular, we drank coffee together & went our separate ways...he was a good man
Bullshit 😂 John Lennon and the rest of the Beatles had very little time for their fans especially during the end/post split. No way he sat and chatted and had coffee with someone he just met, especially a fan.
I worked with a gentleman that used to be a New York cop. We talked about Dec 8 1980 and he told me he was one of the officers who responded to the call. He said when he got there and found out who it was that he broke down into tears when he got home.
I can't even begin to tell you what I went through. I remember the Beatles on Ed Sullivan and my father was a DJ who helped them to stardom in our little town. I bought a bottle of Southern comfort and stayed drunk (with no sleep) for three days, until I finally passed out from exhaustion.
A big memory for me. It broke my heart. John Lennon tried to just live among the people like one of them. Thanks, Adam, for doing your vlog on John Lennon. R.I.P John 😢
I recorded in the old Hit Factory at 353 West 48th in the 80s. It had the same outboard gear and mics that were used on Double Fantasy. One of the big memories was the first time we got into the elevator to go to A6 where the studio was. When we entered we could see where many musicians had scratched their names into the walls. And when the metal doors closed the two doors made a heart, half on each side. One side said John and the other Yoko. We all just looked at each other. There are many stories from that experience.
@@patgalvez4563good, but what's that got to do with this vlog featuring John Lennon? I shook the hand that shook the hand that shook the hand of Little Richard, n cried when he passed, but there's a time n place to mention stuff n unfortunately u have not nailed it! Lol
I got lucky enough to meet both you on 5th ave yesterday (I was the guy that lived in Orlando) and Oscar Isaac after his show on Friday. It was a cool experience after watching you for many years. Thanks for being kind 👍🏼
I was lucky enough to have shared some time with Lennon during his One - to - One Concert , and a more giving , kinder , musical genius , there wasn’t .... such a tragedy !! 😢
I still get teary-eyed thinking about this & seeing these pictures. I have always been a huge Beatles fan & am a huge fan of John Lennon's. I still remember this horrible night, when we lost a true icon, a true legend. My heart still goes out to Yoko Ono & his sons, Julian & Sean. RIP John Lennon 🙏🕯🕊💔😭🎶🎸 we will always love ❤️ you, cherish you & miss you forever.
The Dakota is so iconic and it never fails to impress. The first time I went to NYC one of my friends made a point of visiting the Dakota before we did anything else in the city. I can relate to the "heaviness" Jay was experiencing while you guys were standing there. Just being there is so much more powerful in real life.
I went to Central Park for John Lennon's memorial. I looked to my left and a 13 year old was crying, I then looked to my right and a lady in her 90s was also crying uncontrollably. That told me all I needed to know about how many people were going to miss John.(and still do.) Peace and love to ALL!!!
Adam, in regards to the Statue of Liberty, there are a few ways to do it… if you want to go up to the very top and the crown, you need to get a pass however it’s 4 months or more waiting to get one. If you want to go up the statue to the base of the pedestal, the waiting list is a few months. If you want to take ferry to the statue and grounds, you can go on the same day. Just keep that in mind the next time you come
🍏🖤 I was born in 1963, and literally raised on the Beatles. I even remember going with my dad to buy Sgt Pepper, coming home and playing with the cardboard cutouts. It’s still emotional for me to this day, recalling hearing on the news that he’d been killed. Of all people, why him. What a loss. @17:17 Last time I was in Strawberry Fields, people had left flowers on the Imagine mosaic, and I teared up a bit at the sight of a green apple. 💔R.I.P. John Lennon
Ditto. I was born in July63. My earliest memories in life were of the Beatles. In 1968 we lived in Los Angeles. My parents flew me to Puerto Rico to see my Grandparents, alone. That was a 7hr flight. I was a bit scared. When I got on the plane, the stewardess plugged in headphones & put it on the Beatles channel. I listened to the Beatles for the whole trip...For some reason the only song I vividly remember was "Love Love Me Do"... I was Beatles fan since then, I was 5. Then Dec 1980, I was 17, watching Monday Night Football ..."OMG, An unspeakable tragedy. John Lennon shot dead. Upper west hills NYC"... Howard Cosell's legendary voice informed me.. I was in unbelief, shock. One of those times in life you never forget... I have tons of Beatle story's from 5-60 yrs of age, but I'll spare you.. RIP Mr. Lennon RIP
Adam, the Dakota is my favorite NYC apartment building by far that I've personally worked in. I've worked in Lauren Bacall's apartment, Leonard Bernstein's apartment, and a few others. Yoko Ono used to own the entire 7th floor (or at least every apartment on the 7th floor). And she has recently listed those apartments for sale since she's moved to upstate NY. Just a fabulous building, besides the negative things that have happened there over the years. The architecture is over the top inside - for example, I've never seen door hinges on such a massive scale - some of them are over a foot tall. 3 foot wide walls, 15 foot high ceilings, etc. It's such an awesome building to see from the inside. Awesome video by the way!
I remember the December 8th and 9th very well. I put a rose in the gate on the 9th. Met Yoko and Sean there. BitterSweet memories. The Hit Factory where John recorded the overdubs to Yoko's Walking On Thin Ice on December 8th. Thanks for sharing your love for John. He was definitely a complicated man who wrote some incredible music.
@@TheDailyWoo yeah, very depressing feeling. Such a senseless act. Elton John wrote a nice song in reference to it called Empty Garden. If you haven't heard it, check it out sometime in your travels.
@@TheDailyWooAdam, those " cardboard thingies" that go around your coffee cup to mitigate the hotness is called a " sleeve" where I come from( Winnipeg) LOL! Where did u stay in NYC and did they have cockroaches or bed bugs there! NYC is supposed to b bad for that n rats too!
Huge John Lennon fan. I remember visiting their when I was a teenager and felt very moved. I often think of the impact John would be making in todays world. Side note: I am in NYC for work right now. I am keeping my eye out for the Woo.
I'm so glad you're having a great time in my city. You were near my office yesterday (when you were on 5th Ave), I wish I could have known. I'm glad you're finding us New Yorkers to be friendly and helpful. We will always give suggestions and directions whenever needed. I'm loving watching my home through your tourist eyes.
For whatever reason, not as much of a fan of the Beatles as John Lennon. But John Lennon touched me with his solo music in a way that I cannot define. This video means a lot to me, Adam!
The killing of John Lennon was devastating. Frankly, as a fan this still hurts. Out of everyone, this one still makes my heart hurt. I think of him often and I was just a fan who loved what he stood for, peace.
I've been obsessed with the beatles since this year started, went back and rewatched all your beatle related videos over the years and glad to see a new one
Ohh my goodness it still hurts. I loved him I was a teenager in love now in my 60s my feelings still strong ,You woke them up. 😢😢😢😢 Thank you for this❤. 😢😢😢😢
Talking about New Yorkers while at the station reminded me of that scene with James Caan in Mickey Blue Eyes. Where the lady from the south is at the pay phone and she says "I dont know what people were talking about , everybody here in NY is so friendly" and right at that moment James Caan grabs her and moves her away from the phone and says "Go on, get the hell outta here" 😂😂
A rule of thumb for Beatlefan‘s is to never say the murderers name because that’s what he wanted. He wanted to have his name intertwine with the Beatles. Thanks for doing that for me. Made my day. Keep up the good work for us.
Hi Adam, I am a huge fan of the FAB 4, and I want to thank you for this vlog today. I was devastated when he died and I think of him often! I'm glad you are having a good visit to NYC.
Loved this video! I'm a UK citizen in my 70s, who grew up with Beatles music and saw them live in the early 60s at the Royal Albert Hall in London (I was 10 at the time). It was something I've never forgotten. I would dearly love to visit NYC to see these places, but I guess I've left it too late now so your video was great to watch.
I remember the Beatles on Ed Sullivan. I had to sneak to watch them because my Mom said their hair was ridiculous! OMG!!!! Thank you so much for this video.
HEY ATW...YOW! I HAVE VIEWED SO MANY DOCUMENTARIES about Lennon's murder, but today's episode made it so real! I don't remember crying about it back then. Today...I cried. Thanks pal.
I'm from the city and now live an hour north. I haven't been able to get there for a few years due to health etc. , so I've enjoyed these videos. Last trip we took a walk around just to see different areas and had pizza... things like that. We usually take the kids to the museum of natural history.
It’s almost impossible to explain the effect of John Lennon’s murder. The shockwave that spread from New York around the world was tangible. As with countless people I gasped in complete disbelief, struggled to comprehend what had happened & remained numb for days. To add to such an unfathomable tragedy there were people so distraught they took their own lives. Mercifully there weren’t many who reacted that way but it goes to show what a seismic event it was. The Strawberry Fields area of Central Park is where Yoko had previously scattered John’s ashes. The decision to officially turn the area into a memorial was obviously rooted in that fact. Certainly was the most appropriate place for it to be. As someone who’d been a fan of the Beatles, and Johns solo work in particular, since the 60s it was a huge deal visiting The Dakota and Strawberry Fields. I’m not ashamed to admit it was incredibly emotional, initially filled me with great sadness but that turned into happiness that I’d travelled from the U.K. to pay my respects in person.
Ms. Ono-Lennon has been instrumental in reaching out to the Green Haven Parole Board, in denying Mr. Chapman’s request for parole. Hope Yoko outlives Mr. Chapman. But if not, hope Sean, and/or Julian, takes the reins and keeps up the pressure. Mr. Chapman should never, ever get out of prison.
Another strange connection is. John Lennon's Mother died in front of his Aunt 'Mimi's' house in Liverpool, by a hit and run driver. John would live in this same house for a while afterwards, and it is just a short walk from this house to the real Strawberry Fields' park.
At 17 years old, I saw the Beatles in Las Vegas during their tour of the USA in 1964. I have the ticket stubs and the program for the show. I was visiting my Aunt who lived in Las Vegas and she got me tickets. A week later, when I returned home to Toronto Canada, my buddy & I drove to downtown Toronto & watched the girl’s screaming and passing out in front of the hotel they were staying at. I am now 76 years old and still have the memories.
Adam I've been waiting years for you to come to the Dakotas, thank you, wish you could place a rose on the sidewalk for the greatest songwriter of all time, peace and love
Oh, Adam. This is a good one. Thank you. I remember the night well. I was watching Monday Night Football when Howard Cosell announced the tragedy worldwide. 😢
I grew up in Liverpool at the time, and even as a six-year-old - my friends and I could feel the local and national shockwaves of the news of John Lennon's death. It seemed to me that all the radio played for weeks was Lennon and Beatles.
Great. A strange Beatles movie link Is 'Rosemarys Baby' (1968) a character falls to their death at the entrance of the Dakota. A film that stars Mia Farrow. Who around that time ( before filming or probably after) joined the Beatles in India on their spiritual retreat. Other famous residents of the Dakota. Boris Karloff lived in the top left corner attic area for a while. and Lauren Bacall was there from the late 1950s for the rest of her life. about 3 floors up facing the park. Huge apartment.
It was horrific. I had followed the Beatles as a young child and had 45s of some of their songs. I would play them on my old turntable. John was way too young to die.
People in NYC aren't rude. If anything they're in a hurry. Time is precious and when you're on your way to work or on lunch break your time is limited. Definitely not rude
I have seen NYC on TV shows and Movies but to see it through your camera is amazing. So many filming locations it is literally a giant location set everywhere you turn.
Adam, in an ER, when a GSW trauma comes in, alot of times, the staff alot of the time does not know initially who the victim is, you are concentrating on what your job is in the emergency.
I was 29 years old when John Lennon was shot. The first time I ever seen the Beatles was on that Sullivan show in 1964 I was 11 years old. When I heard about his death, I was very sad. Two young only 40 what is shame . To lose a man with so much talent and so much to give to society. Sure John was a little bit of a rebel, but he did it in a cool way. The Beatles were always my favorite band. Too bad we lost George to. But George got to live just a little bit longer. I miss those two. Sometimes I wonder what they would be doing today. A very educational video. Thanks so much. Have a great day.👍🏼👍🏼😁🎸😎🥲🥲
The horror movies buff that you are, I'm surprised you didn't mention that the Dakota is also the filming location for Rosemary's Baby, an iconic horror film.
Glad to see the apartment were john lived and yoko live the pictures you show on your smart phone was great. Thanks for sharing. Im a Beatles fan as well. You take care Adam .😎🙏
This by far my favorite video you did. It's on my bucket list to go to strawberry fields and see Imagine sign on the ground. Even though i was born after he died. I can sense how wonderful place it was and how he affected people's lives. I grew up loving the Beatles and now I'm introducing them to my kids. Thank you for all your videos. Especially my 9 year old loves watching them.
Watching tv in bed and News broke. Did not sleep that night or the next day did not leave bed. I felt I needed to stay in bed. As protest of evil. A local radio channel played his music for 48 hours. Listened to every minute. We did not have social media or cell phones but you felt the social hug from us that grew up with the Beatles and John Lennon. We lost John Kennedy, Robert Kennedy, MLK.
they had Billy Joel singing in Oliver and company a Disney movie saw Oliver and company way back when inspired me to visit New York City plus James and the giant peach movie plus King Kong movies plus Elioes at the Plaza hotel.
it was a heartbreaking day to hear of his death just days before my birthday ❤️🩹 awesome vlog retracing his steps seeing all these beautiful iconic places, The Dakota as lovely this building is and can’t help feel some sadness where his life was taken 🙏 RIP John Lennon
Adam, thanks for documenting this NY trip, this Aussie chick has enjoyed tagging along. You really spread so much joy with your vlogs, I can’t thank you enough for the generosity of your time and effort in bringing these experiences to us all. 😎
So sad that John Lennon, who liked to sign autographs for his fans, was killed in such a way. It was very interesting to see the places he lived and the studio he recorded in. A great vlog Adam and glad Tampa Jay was there too.
My late mom was the first one in RI I believe to own the Black Beatles record after her uncle, who was a DJ at WBZ radio gave it to her *radio station were the first ones to get them before the public back then.... She was so upset after John was shot... Hello from Gatlinburg TN Mr Woo .. Great job as always 🏞️🐻🌄
I Can Only Imagine by MercyMe is really a beautiful song. ~~One day I will have to give NYC another chance. Only went there once when I was little to Sotheby’s auction house for them to look at something. In and out of the city in a few hours and I truthfully hated the place. But one day I will give it another go. Maybe I will have a different perspective as an adult. Your videos are also making me think and also my love for photography. I have always wanted to see the real Macy’s parade in person and all of the Christmas decorations so maybe one day.
The man playing guitar in front of the mosaic at 17:14 is singer/ songwriter/ recording artist Jules Avalon. When he's not performing at Strawberry Fields, you might be able to find him if you venture a little further in the park as he's known to play on the Mall frequently. Jules has been on the New York music scene for a few years, playing guitar for projects like A Band Called Sad and Morphland as well as writing, producing, and recording 3 of his own solo projects. He's currently preparing to release his fourth album, and you can find his newest song, Mr Fraser's Cabin, right here on RU-vid. You can hear all of his music here, on Spotify, Apple Music, or wherever you stream your music. His video collaborations with Bianca Perez are beautiful, and every time he sings with Kakush, it's magical.
