Welcome back to Dreaming of a Chateau!
January and February at Chateau de Puy Vidal were quiet months as we continue prepping for the 2023 season and anticipating the arrival of Robert and Penelope to Puy Vidal. It's Valentine's Day, we visit the Farmer's Market & we bring in Architects to Chateau de Puy Vidal to begin envisioning a future Chateau kitchen and additional guest rooms.
In this episode we share the successful launch of our new September 2023 Oil Painting Workshop called "Retreat to the Château" with master painter Johanna Spinks.

Julia and Carolina visit the local Les Halles Market for our Sunday market day trips. They also share with you some exciting ideas about future renovations at Puy Vidal.

As someone who restored old houses, I applaud your approach to this project. I watch tons of RU-vid videos of people restoring mansions and chateaus. Rarely do I see people stop, step back and make a long-term plan. They simply run around putting out fires, fixing one problem after the other. They fail to do an overall assessment of the building's bones and maladies, not knowing if all their work is going to last or fall through into the room below. If I were 40 years younger, I'd pack a bag and find a little spot in an attic so I could be part of this adventure! I wish you luck!

So many homes/abodes are renovated for the sole purpose of flipping. I've heard people say they'll leave some problems for the next owner. Right. Those problems may or may not have been concealed. All people over the generations have more things to do than fix repairs. And many issues were never given much thought. While I love big, beautiful homes, in truth, they are not for everybody.

I agree with T.J. Bren. It’s so impressive how much you have accomplished in one year in the chateau and the gardens. Tackling the infrastructure first is so smart along with the business side to pay for the renovations and enough rooms ready for the events indoors and partying outdoors and accommodations down the road for more guests. Your home is just so exquisite its like a fairytale and a dream all in one. I hope you are loving it too. Business ideas for the Lady of the château 1.Outdoor Shakespeare Plays 2. Mirage ceremonies 3.Pop-up cinema 4. Carport 5. Farmers market 6.Film festival 7.Pop up restaurant with a well known chef 8. Cookery school 9. Kitchen garden 10. Puzzles and Gardens Maze constructed from 2400 yes trees 11. Room, dinner, alcohol 12. Children adventure park 13. Trail shooting weekend 14. Bed and breakfast 15. Ledbury Poetry Festival 16.Food Festivals Most of these things can be held by an event coordinator. They’ll of course do all the hard work and due diligence and of course split the profits with you whether that’s a 50-50 split or 25/75 split that’s all dependent on the agreement between you and the coordinator. They’re are country homes in the UK that has them, and it can provide a good monthly and yearly income. Especially if the upkeep of a home is 30 to 75,000 yearly.

On Waiheke Island in New Zealand, where I live, one of the upscale vineyards created a limited outdoor summer cinema run.They sell tickets along with wine and snack boxes and people bring blankets to sit on the grass. It is an extraordinary money maker with minimal effort and expense.

Dear Chateau de Puy Vidal family, I love watching your plans grow and develop to fruition. I had a few ideas to toss in. One thought is to host a night sky viewing with at least a few adequate telescopes or to bring in a specialist during an art conference as an evening activity for the participants. The other idea is to have a permanent labyrinth installed. Start the layout with a stone path with sufficient width allowance for easy walking and/handicapped wheelchair access.

Wow, your discussion of long-term planning is so interesting! Your term "pain point" is a useful construct. The fact of your traffic flow issues was not so apparent until now. I have noticed that a number of owners live in a separate wing or even an outbuilding (Bordeaux Life and Beau Chateau and Escape to the Dream). It's clear from watching reno channels that the 1970s was an era of very shabby workmanship, but you are very fortunate to have functioning, though problematic, utilities. Thanks for sharing the anguish of decision-making --- it is very interesting.

Whether you buy a house or a chateau the first investigation is foundation/ roof , windows; then where does water get in. I haven't bought a house that I haven't torn down to the studs, especially bathrooms and kitchens.

Sounds like since the various artists are so different, that a guest could attend more than one retreat and not have it be the same! I am very proud of y'all for embracing the French lifestyle which includes being ecofriendly with the trips to town! I think you could use some technology to control the lights, temperature, and anything else possible, if such technology would work where you are. I know you got new internet cable laid, yes? Y'all are so smart to have lived in the chateau for a year and tested your model before embarking on a lot of renovations. This overhaul will be the best thing for your family, the chateau, and your business. Once you connect the wings, your guests will be able to get their luggage up to the west wing without having to use the small spiral staircase. Will there be a structural engineer involved? Make sure it wasn't just door drips on the floor--that it's not the pan and/or any pipes that are leaking. Will you put little kitchens in the family rooms? Does your software also handle the billing? So glad that Papa Leach and Penelope are coming!

Whoa! Your chateau is like a maze! I LOVE the spiral staircase! My mouth dropped open when you showed the hole in the floor by the shower! One word…..Yikes!!! I can’t believe that when this was renovated, even in the 70’s, that there was no subfloor etc put in??? That’s just unbelievable!!! I’m so glad that you were able to get interior architects to help you with this huge project. I’m sure it was devastating to find this out but think of it as a blessing. You will be able to properly get things fixed and done right so that all of your future hard work won’t be wasted. Looking forward to seeing what transpires with the architects solutions. 🍷🙏

Wow! You all are trailblazers! Great respect for what you have chosen for yourselves. First time I heard of talent passport and looked it up and you guys are under some pressure for sure with that alone, let alone the extra renovations required. Yesterday, I was watching a couple of expats on RU-vid from England talking about taxes in France (40%) plus a "Christmas tax" for those who are self-employed. I suppose one could avoid those taxes if their business is incorporated in the USA for example, but it appears that a "talent passport" means you have to build a viable French business. Very interesting and so much to know and consider. Wishing you ongoing perseverance!
