The First Targaryen on Westeros (Game of Thrones Lore) 

George RR Martin made it pretty clear he likes to keep everything about ASOIAF pretty open ended, from the main plot to the history and mysterious of the world.

It took him like 15 years so far to release the the winds of winter book and he’s 73 I think, sadly, it’s safe to say that with 2 books remaining well never get an answer because he won’t be around to write it

Whoever winds up with the rights is going to pump out content till the end of time.

Maybe they had fewer and smaller dragons. Balerion was born 126 years before the conquest. So he wasn't the biggest dragon the world ever saw when the Targs were still in Valyria.

The Targaryeans of westeros were not only of low dragonlords but they were a cadet branch…if the Targaryeans of Westeros were of any influence they would have had more than 3 dragons, more dragon eggs and more than only 2 Valyrian Steel swords

It was the Valryans who knew the most powerful magic in the entire world of the Songs of Ice and Fire saga. House Targary don't really know magic, they only have generators, and they don't have a lot of power and business that would make them money. So they made the Lanisters a sword of Valyrian steel "a bright roar." In order to have more money, the Lannisters paid them "a mountain of gold."

The valyrians basically got a huge empire and defeated major nations not too in depth for a expanded lore on it

There might be some more lore that George has yet to write, I think. In Fire and Blood, in the passages discussing the Great Council of 101 AC, many people came before King Jaehaerys I and the Great Lords to stake their claims, including one man who claimed to be descended from Aenar’s son Gaemon, called “Gaemon The Glorious”. Makes me wonder what’s so “Glorious” about him lol

There’s actually a slightly older video by David Lightbringer about Aenar called something along the lines of “The Doom Was An Inside Job” that theorizes if Aenar was in on the Doom because he thought no empire as powerful and capable of destruction as Valyria should exist. Perhaps this sentiment was somewhat shared among his descendants before Aegon? Not sure, just love talking about ASOIAF with people 😅

Considering their decline was equally affected by the decline of the Targaryens and the current king after the dance of dragons (Aegon III) watched his mother get burned and eaten by a dragon it's understandable.

I personally think it’s much more likely the Dragons were poisoned over a lengthy time frame than Magic is fading…

I was the same until I got the book, and not to be a buzzkill, but it reads like a history text book and can be quite boring and repetitive in some ways. WhyCreate’s videos take all the best bits and make it digestible.

Well Kyle as to the first part of your point, Alyssa Velaryon who became Aenys I Targaryen’s wife and later in life Rogar Baratheon’s wife and had children with both of them, had a Targaryen for a Mother. It’s why she was seen as the perfect match for Aenys. The reason why no one hears about any Targs other than Aegon, Visenya, and Rhaenys is because of the shadow cast over the Branch Families by their actions. They took over almost an entire Continent in less than 2 years with Medieval levels of Technology and were the only Dragon Riders of the Family which leads into your second point. It’s actually a point of contention between the two styles of ASOIAF fans. The fans who believe in Fantasy style Magic in the ASOIAF world say that Magic ebbs and flows and Dragon Births are completely random. The fans who believe in a more Sci-Fi/Superhero style Power System based on Genetics and Telepathy say that a person has to have special genes in order to hatch Dragons. I personally believe in the second approach because there are 3 main spikes in the number of Dragons being born after the Conquest. After Rhaena (daughter of Aenys and Alyssa) was born the number of Dragons went from 3 (Balerion, Vhaegar, and possibly Cannibal) to possibly 11 (Dreamfyre, Quicksilver, Meleys, Vermithor, Silverwing, and possibly Caraxes, Sheepstealer, and Grey Ghost). After Rhaenyra was born the number of Rideable (not total just Rideable) went from 6 to 18. And Daenerys of course took the total from 0 to 3. All of these women were clearly special in some way that we haven’t been given the explicit answer to yet but all of the evidence points to Genetics in my view…

Yeah the double (dragon)X chromosome = hatcher, single = rider theory makes sense to me. Whatever blood magic that creates the dragon lord bond is carried in the X chromosome so both genders can be a rider but females can potentially have hatching-amplifying abilities if they get two modified genes

it is spoken on briefly in The World of Ice and Fire that the Freehold didn't consider Westeros worth invading, it was seen as "backwater", which is why the Targaryens leaving for Westeros was viewed with such contempt by the other families

I'd guess they were focused on Essos and just continued to see Westeros as worthless

@@nervachadikus It always surprised me. I think, as colleagues say here, it comes from seeing Westeros as worthless. The Targaryen took part in the wars waged on Essos from time to time. They were even offered the crown of Volantis (he was supposed to be the king of Valyri and Volantis) and reclaim / rebuild Valyria, but Aegon refused (he apparently knew Valyria was ruined / finished and dangerous) so he invaded and conquered Westeros. Why were the other dragonstone lords doing nothing? It seems to me that only Aegon saw that he could conquer the continent of Westeros and create all one great mighty kingdom under his rule.Perhaps the earlier targaryen lords did not have sufficiently grown dragons, and therefore waited. Or they lacked Aegon's vision of conquest. I wonder more about why the other dragonlords of Valyria were so pissed off with the Targaren that they moved out. They insulted on cowards and idiots instead of taking Daenys Dreamer's vision to heart. Especially since they knew each other about magic, so their terrible arrogance blinded them. I have read books a long time ago and I do not remember whether the dragon rock belongs to the personal property of the Targareyn family or whether they appropriated / stole it and that is why the Valyrians got pissed off despite the low value of the island (only fish and obsidian were traded there).

@@The-Khandor-of-Kalakuta And I wonder why Valyrian Freehold never conquered Yi Ti? The invasion of Yi Ti was too risky? For sure it was a more noteworthy empire than the tiny quarreling and mutually hating kingdoms of Westeros. Because with Kingdom of Sarnor and Asshai, Valyrian Freehold had a very good relationship. Valyrian Freehold defeated the Ghiscar Empire which it hated (Valyrians were defending themselves, that's their only defensive war, the rest were the Valyrians were the aggressors) they also defeated the kingdoms of Andals and Rhoynars. So they could only attack Westeros or Yi Ti and would probably defeat both.

@@axelos6963 1. I don't think previous Targaryens were waiting for their dragons to grow even larger so they can conquer Westeros. I'd assume, since they brought 5 dragons, that at least some were fully grown or big enough. Even a medium sized dragon is a powerful asset not to mention that Balerion was truly an exception seeing how he is the largest known dragon. I think they were A) content to rule the Narrow Sea and perhaps exact tribute from the free cities (perhaps that how Gaemon the Glorious earned his nickname) or B) involved themselves in Essosi politics (like how Aegon burned the Volantene fleet). 2. As to why other dragonlord families thought rhe Targaryens cowards for leaving, there's really endless speculation there. Valyria had, at that point, been around for thousands of years and had no reason to think anything would go wrong (you think the Chinese, after thousands of years of the world revolving around them, could've expected the century of humiliation?). We also don't know if Aenar told anyone of the visions or perhaps the vision story is completely made up and his family was just exiled (not improbable with them being one of the lesser dragonlord families). 3. Dragonstone was an outpost of the freehold so perhaps it was the personal property of the Targs, perhaps not (doesn't matter really cuz it was basically worthless). 4. We know that Aurion assembled army and marched to Valyria after the doom. If he was the first one to do that, perhaps others were scared enough by the fact that he nobody returned. Other dragonlords probably got involved in Essosi politics and were killed off one by one alongside their dragons. Heck, if the Faceless Men theory is true, they were probably all assassinated. Unfortunately there's just not much information about the period so we don't know.

I think during the century of blood a lot of Valyrians and their dragons were killed were they not? I think this could explain why their race is nearly extinct in the present times of the story

Actually, the Valyrian features are far more common like you would expect from a widespread empire like Valyria. In fact, many people from the Free Cities (at least in the books) have Valyrian traits, especially in Lys, where even the smallfolk have the silver-gold hair and purple eyes of the Valyrian race. Fun fact: a Targaryen King (Viserys II) married a Lysene noblewoman named Larra Rogare, who looked and was very Valyrian. Having the Valyrian look is also a huge deal in Volantis, where being able to prove you are of Valyrian ancestry not only decides if you are of noble status, but also decides that you can even access the gated eastern part of the city. Very Pure Valyrian Volantenes are also the only individuals who can become a Triarch of Volantis. So yes, while there are a handful of families such as the Targaryens, Velaryons, Celtigars, etc., there are also plenty of people in Essos who descend from or are of the Valyrian Race, which is a race according to multiple sources. Idk I just find this stuff interesting 🤷‍♀️😅

Valyrian traits ARE pretty widespread and not especially hard to find in Essos throughout Lys, Myr, Tyrosh, Volantis, etc. Even peasants and sex slaves can be found with Valyrian features (at least in the books they don't really show that in the show). Valyrian features are just not as common in Westeros because obviously the Valyrians never conquered it and so some of the only Valyrians in Westeros were from the Targaryens, Velaryens and Celtigars besides the occasionally immigration and mixture from Essosi people with valyrian features.

@@axelos6963 There probably was some sort of building or fortification there, and the Targaryens just expanded on it in the same way the Aegonfort was expanded upon. It's just that it's implied to be a Valyrian trading outpost, so not owned by any one family, though the Targaryens were just able to go and make a castle there and control the outpost for approx twelve years. Perhaps the other Valyrians just didn't give two sh*ts about Dragonstone because it wasn't a very _important_ outpost. I've always just been curious about it 🤷🏻‍♀️

@@made-line7627 hmm🤔, I would have to check because I read the book a few years ago. I don't think there is much information about it. Everything in Valyria is mysterious. After the destruction of Varlyria, he became the personal domain of the Targaryen family to be sure. The castle was built of black stone. The Valyrians shaped the stone with fire and would be able to control the perfect patterns, sculptures and carvings of the world according to Valyn's thought which was on the world level there. I remember some Targaryen were expanding the castle🏰.I am also curious because it is not known if this post was to be used as a military base later until, for example, I do not know the invasion of Westeros by Valyrian? But from what I remember, only fish, stone and obsidian were traded there. It's a rather rough island. But it has its own cool exotic atmosphere and mystery. I also wonder what was the purpose of that house Targaryen was sent there or they just moved in after "moving out of Valyria" which was not well received by the dragon lords, condemning them and believing them to be cowards.

Varys is probably a Blackfire, and Tyrion might be a chimera (both Mad King's and Lannister's son, as in absorbed his twin from another father early in womb, that would explain different eyes and weird hair and affinity to dragons)

Valyrians, as in every country, have people of different status. Only Valyrian aristocrats had "dragon's blood", ie genetically modified / improved magic, hence the fire resistance increased. But the purpose of this was to be able to mount dragons, the dragon felt like its Lord / brother in you and therefore you could ride it. Therefore, they kept their blood pure, because they would dilute their marriages with others, so that they would lose their genetics and lose their power. They would become ordinary people. House Targaryen are the last ARISTOCRATES of Valyria, and they are the only ones who currently have dragon blood.

Just being from Valyri as the son of a blacksmith or shepherd gives you nothing except purple eyes and silver hair. The lords of Valyria had dragon blood. And there were 40 noble families that ruled over Valyria. They had 300 dragons, enormous wealth (greater than the Lannisters), and knew the mighty magic of fire and blood, and the strongest.

The Targaryen are the last ones because they were the only dragon lords to survive the destruction of Valyria because they were then on a dragon rock.

@@jacksparrow9227 Dragon's blood are only Valyrian qualities as long as you are noble. Because only the nobles had it, they specially modified the blood, and it was a great honor. So to have dragon blood 1. You must be a Valyrian. 2. You must be a noble.
