This is my Dad's Marlin. The car means more to him than just about anything in the entire world, and it makes me happy to see him share his story with the car. My dad is really a very quiet person, and usually just keeps to himself. But if you're going to start talking to him about AMC's and Ramblers, he will talk your ear off. I could tell he wanted to maybe say a few more things, but he was trying his hardest to let Lou run the show... 😂 I love my Dad.

You didn't see a lot of these way back when I was a kid. They always reminded me of the 66' Charger. AMC was kind of the wackier version of Chrysler. The little guys had to push the envelope to pull attention away from Ford and GM. Cool Car!

Yes, and even the fastback '68 Torino CobraJet 428 GT, my neighbor had. Ford was late to this midsize "party" though it had been present on the Mustang, previously! In my opinion, the best rendition of a trend ever offered by AMC, only eclipsed by the AMX.

Hi David, Happy to read you enjoy this "Nice car!" :-) Would sure make sense to have two head rests on the seats. Lou
@danielulz1640

Headrests were individually optional at extra cost. They had more to do with the reclining seats than with safety.
@maxheadroom8857
@maxheadroom8857 Год назад
Head restraints became mandatory on passenger cars in 1968, but were an option on earlier cars of most makes. I suspect the seats in the Marlin also become beds when reclined, just like the other Rambler seats. I have my late dad's 62 California model Rambler Classic Custom sedan which he bought new. The Rambler reclining bed seats are awesome!
@ACF6180T
@ACF6180T Год назад
That proably makes it that much rarer? Like a 1of1.
@danielulz1640
@danielulz1640 Год назад
@@ACF6180T not really. Since, in 1967, headrests were considered a comfort item, not a safety item, passenger only headrests were not uncommon. Thunderbird, Lincoln, Chrysler and Imperial offered bucket seats with headrests for the passenger only, but not available for the driver. Dual headrests were more unusual, I had them on a 65 Ambassador that I used to own.

That's a car you don't see every day! A 1967 AMC Marlin with an Ambassador front clip! The instrument cluster looks identical to the 1968 Ambassador SST that my aunt and uncle had back in the day! It was also equipped with the "Typhoon" 343 V8 engine. They drove that car for years! I believe that 1967 was the last year for the Marlin only to be replaced by the Ambassador in 1968. However, I liked the body style of the Marlin better than the Ambassador with its fastback styling. What a beautiful car Lou!

Gr8 feature Lou. You are appreciated amongst the AMC enthusiasts! The 3rd and final year of the Marlin was based upon the Ambassador Chassis. Essentially, the car was an Ambassador fastback. You mention that it looked like the '66 Charger, respectfully, no, the Charger looks like the Marlin as the Marlin was introduced in '65. The same has been said about the Plymouth Satellite and the AMC Rebel - Rebel came first as well. I think the designers at Chrysler highly respected AMC's Dick Teague. The '67 Marlin as mentioned, was on the 118" wheelbase Ambassador, which I believe was much more proportionately correct and better looking than the previous '65-'66 models which were based on the Rambler Classic chassis with a 112" wheelbase. The 343 Typhoon was also introduced in '67 as part of what was the Gen-2 AMC V8's. A very stout and underappreciated motor. And, a solid performer too... I don't have a link [but can be easily Googled] is the initial concept of the car was based upon the Rambler American chassis in response to Fords Mustang. It was named the Tarpon. Roy Abernathy [then AMC president] made the decision to go larger as he was anxious to shed AMC's econo-image even though the Mustang itself was based on Fords econo-box, the Falcon. The concept Tarpon based upon the Rambler itself was a proportionately good looking car - sort of Barracuda looking. And, the rest is history! Long live AMC muscle! 💪

Thanks for that very interesting information. Chicago-area AMC fan here. I attended the AMC Homecoming in Kenosha last year and saw a number of Marlins but did not know of the spec difference between the years that you pointed out. And good to know that AMC pre-dated the cars that the Marlin and Rebel are compared to, stylistically.

Looks like the weather last Wednesday July 5th didn't really cooperate in WI for a classic car show, and we had same here in IL. It started real hot until an afternoon storm blew in, the temperature dropped 20 deg, the wind and sky got ugly and almost looked like tornado weather, but the storm blew over quick, then it just drizzled the rest of the day. We need every drop of the rain this summer as we are in a bit of a drought, but rain or shine, always a great car story with whatever Lou may find for us.

Hello Lou! This time, you covered a car that mostly everyone seems to have forgotten about : the American Motors Marlin. Not very many were built during the three years it was made, and the '67 is the rarest; just 2,545 built that year. Total Marlin production : 17,419. The '67 is the best looking of all the Marlins offered. For one thing, it rode the 118-inch wheelbase also used by the Ambassador, while the '65 and '66 had a 112-inch wheelbase and therefore looked stubbier (IMO). And that 343-cid engine sounds so tough for an AMC. It's powerful in its own way. And the name "Typhoon" fits that engine well. That name also appeared on a special edition black and yellow Classic 770 hardtop in 1964. The owner has a very special car. You did not see many even when they were new; that's why they're so rare today. The 1967 model year spelled the end of the Marlin. AMC had something ready for '68 that would be far more successful: the Javelin, and shortly afterwards, the AMX. Thanks again, Lou, for another wonderful car story! I'll be looking for more, just as I always do. Loving your videos! _(7/10/2023)_

Love it! You know, growing up, I never thought very highly of Ramblers or Nash's and I considered those who owned them, penny pinchers and a little bit off. However, many were eyecatching, like the later Ambassadors, Javelins, Matadors and especially Casini Matadors. The Marlins were revolutionary and beating Doge to the punch one model year before the Dodge Charger was introduced. Rambler started the Marlin on the American chassis but quickly realized that the buyers that AMC wanted to market the car to wouldn't appreciate a fancy Rambler American, so it went to the Ambassador chassis. The Ambassador was the largest car AMC ever made, but it was actually considered mid-size. Dodge did the same thing by basing the 1966 Charger on the Coronet, a mid-size car. Looking back, I think that Dodge was actually copying the AMC Marlin. Rambler and Nash favored 3-speed manuals with overdrive for many years, catering to the cheapskate buyers. But, when the Marlin came around, they started offering a console-mounted overdrive shift lever, and they even offered it with automatic transmission, which was a first. I have seen Marlins and Americans equipped this way, although the inline six remained the standard engines. I saw a Marlin with a 6 cyl., floor-console mounted 3-speed with the overdrive lever. I felt that was so sad. I guess that 1967 was the first year for AMC's Buick-like designed V8, which lasted well into the Jeep-Chrysler era up to 401 c.i. V8, but more commonly the 304 and 360 V8's. The earlier Marlin's could be ordered with the 327 V8, which was a real HD powerhouse of an engine which could run circles around AMC's later V8's. I'd take a 327 Marlin anyday! They were in the same vein as the Studebaker 289's and 304's. Nowm if they had just offered a Paxton supercharger on a Marlin 327, it would have really drawn people to AMC. Like the Studebaker, remaining a 3-speed automatic operating like a basic 2-speed, atleast Studebaker added new shift quadrants which showed that it was actually a 3-speed automatic. Both Studebaker and AMC used the same B-W automatic, AMC, through 1967, continued to have theirs operate like the original Ford Cruise-O-Matic. The Ford cast-iron cased automatics were also basically a B-W design anyway. Fortunately, AMC went to the 'Shift-Command" automatic for 1968 and later, until they went to the Chrysler-built "Torque-Command".

handsome cars, in a way its both throwback to the 40s and paving the way for the "gran coupe" sedans of the 2000s. perhaps the design would have worked even better as a 4 door?
