Does anyone recognize the piece of music played by Friendly and orchestra? They mention "Sailor Boy" but I haven't been able to find a similar piece with that name... Barbiedee
We use to get the Friendly Giant program in the mid 1960's on the local Chicago PBS station, WTTW. Geez, I haven't seen any of this program in over 40 years. Thanks for sharing!
I remember watching The Friendly Giant on Channel 13 growing up in New Jersey in the 60s. It was a gentle 15 minutes that had lots of music and stories read by Friendly. I'll always remember him playing the theme on a recorder near the end of each show. The show was cancelled by NET (now known as PBS) in 1970 but it ran for many years in Canada. Look up! WAAAAAAAAAAAY UP!!
Wow the cats were named Phil & Angie. Never knew that till now. I always called them "The Jazz Cats." And I'm sorry if I offend people but my adult mind went to a dirty place when Gerome says " Sometimes I like to be blown (by the waves.") Always liked Friendly's good bye but got a little sad to cause the show was ending. Just a little sad that a kids show like The Friendly Giant probably wouldn't be a hit today. Just to quiet & simple. So want to go live in Friendly's world right about now !!
if friendly was a giant... those cats must be huge!. i remember being just a tot watching these shows. They just don't make kids shows like this any more. so calming and comforting to little kids. Now a-days everything is so frantic and noisy. that's why kids are the way they are now. :P Bring back shows like this, I say.
such a peaceful and calm show. i remember being very sick with the mumps as a kid and watching this show. it made me forget my pain for 30 minutes. i was somewhere else!
I always loved the way he said goodbye to his friends, Rusty and Gerome. The music always continued to play and the conversation kept going. And the bye bye's were not really bye byes but "lets continue tomorrow". I adored this show when i was 5 years old. Always had to watch till the cow went over the moon.
Did anyone else get completely creeped out by the ending of this show??? I did, and it still gives me goosebumps to this day. Something eerie about it.
Anyone I ever asked didn't remember The Friendly Giant, but I remember watching this show as a very little girl living in Brooklyn, NY, and loving it. I esp. Remember the music and the Giants costume. It was a wonderful time of my life. Those times will never come again. And yes, the music is bittersweet and nostalgic.
I always find it interesting to see how far the Giant traveled, so to speak. As it was a series produced in Toronto by the CBC it was a mainstay for a generation of children in Canada, but I wouldn't necessarily have thought it had been shown and appreciated in other countries too - but it is marvelous to learn that it indeed was.
robatsea2009 At least for those of us who lived close to the border and could receive a CBC station either over the airwaves or on cable, this was how we came to know of this show too. I suppose as a kid, I didn't think of it as Canadian at all but then I was probably too young to appreciate the exclusiveness of seeing this show at all.
So very very happy to have stumbled onto this program. I had been wondering about the name of this show for up to fifty yrs . I only found out today what the name was when I was on another Facebook page of a Prince fan member who had this photo as his photo. And tada it stirred a memory of something that I always wanted to know. The giraffe was my favorite as a young kid I remember watching this one time with my brother and sister and wanting to see it over again and I didn’t know the name to request it and of course my family was too busy to really be of help to me back then to find out what the shows name was, But now I have closure on this lovely memory. my heart is also healing from my Prince’s passing now. Thinking maybe he also enjoyed this as a child too. And wanted the music too be more funky maybe who knows. A pleasant thought anyways. Thank you for posting this lovely memory.
my son name nic has a remake of the friendly giant 1983 sailor concert untill we buy a giraffe puppet and get more paper to make rusty and buy a yellow book bag

I agree with you greybeardd. The masterpiece to this show was that it was so calming and comforting. Also it gave a sense of security because it was so consistent. You could always count on the giant to tell us to look waaaaay up at the beginning and to see the cow jump over the moon at the end. There were some absolute genius's in children's television back then and Bob Homme was one of them.
sorry for the people who are not interested. Since I mentioned Record and replay for music lessons same goes with another language or recipes or construction of legos - I know there she is with commercials built-in. Of course people like FisherPrice will love me.
