a CBC British Columbia (CBUT) station ID leads into the opening minutes of a 1986 "Friendly Giant" broadcast, featuring the legendary Bob Homme & Rod Coneybeare.
Oh I know...my Dad just today sent me a picture via messenger from this show. Him and I used to watch it together all the time...great show with even better memories... Vancouver BC 🇨🇦
This show brings back innocent memories . I remember snuggling in my blanket , sitting there listening and ,being transported to another world of imagination. It is sad that the quality of children's entertainment has been diminished to commercial success. Shows like the friendly giant were humble in nature.
I remember watching the show when I was little. Mom used to tell me that this was her favourite show when she was a little girl. That was back in 1991 when I was 5 and Mom was 36. My mom passed away six years ago due to a brain aneurism but the theme song early one morning always brings tears to my eyes. I love you and miss you everyday Mom. 😔
Likewise! I lost my Mom in 2010, Dad in 2015. They always made sure we kids watched wholesome, entertaining shows like this. Missing my parents dearly too. ⚘🇨🇦🙏😪💔🙏❤🌈
And me too! My dad passed away in 2004 and mom in 2011. I love and miss them both dearly. I grew up watching this, and Mr. Dress up and the Polka Dot Door. Such precious memories 🤗
Sorry for your loss. Grief, mourning, it is love that endures. Be assured though, no one dies, their body might perish, but they live on. Whether in heaven or hell, God will eventually allow everyone back on to the new earth to live in peace and love forever. (**except those who have knowingly worked with Satan against mankind, so the politicians/pharma/certain key families**).
Indeed! I'm from Windsor and worked at CBC-TV9 CBET in different departments. It's a special place to work! Many "firsts" began at that very TV station that included Bob Seger's first big break into music industry! 🥰🇨🇦🎵🇺🇲💞
I say that all the time, to friends and family. And the other perc was "Hockey Night in Canada" every Saturday night, with Don Cherry. Was like living in another world 🤣
I remember watching this show regularly as a child. One day, at age 5 in1981, the ending theme song brought me to tears and I could not explain why to my mother, who was fascinated by it. I just watched it again, 42 years later. I know why. It was so pure. It was Genuine.
The great Bob Homme! I loved this show as a kid, growing up in Vancouver. I was more than a little annoyed with my parents, because Friendly lived in a castle and we were stuck in an ordinary house!
I use to watch this show, Mr. Dress-up and The Hilarious House of Frightenstein every day. Yes the kids shows today are dribble. Even the Canadian version of Sesame Street is crap now.
+Brothe hood BROKE The sad this is that this would be beyond some of todays kids comprehension !! I loved this show growing up & went to high school in the states (85-87). When I was home on breaks I would watch old times sake.
Once, in a teacher's workshop, I found myself seated next to someone who knew this show and song..we started singing it and got a sharp reprimand from the teacher...I finally understood the joy of disobedience in class...somethings have to be sung!!!
+PC Master Race Associate I love it! And only some of us would get the inference...at that point I would have started humming "Early One Morning", the theme song...thanks for sharing that...I might use it some day....
I love whistling for Jerome in crowds and seeing if there might be response ....very often there comes the next whistle, up one tone, and once and while you get a happy "giraffe!"
This was part of my weekday shows when I was a kid along with Fred Penners Place, Mr. Dressup, Canadian Sesame Street, Polka Dot Door and Today's Special
When I was a child my dad and I would watch this show together. Now that I am a father myself, I sit down with my 3 sons and my dad and we watch this show.
Seeing this show again, reminded me (of course) of MY childhood in Maine. There were only a couple of TV channels on our TV in the mid-sixties, and since we lived close to the Canadian boarder of New Brunswick, this show was able to he seen. "Thanks" to all who made available to we kids, this Canadian show!
I'll never forget that line - "Look up....waaaaaaaay up." Honestly, out of nowhere it just popped in my head and I had to look up this video. Great show, good times.
RIP Rod Coneybeare. He was Rusty & Gerome. But 89 is a good long time to be around. And as I posted 3 years ago sad that there are on kid shows like this today. Always loved TFG, MR Dressup, Cucumber & The Hilarious House Of Frightenenstein !!
Afternoon naptime😂😂😂 I'm 58 yrs young and I loved watching this program as a child...and my son was introduced to it as well. Thank goodness for you tube to rekindle good memories 😊😊😊😊
This was my favourite children's show along with Mr. Green Jeans when I was just a young fellow. Loved the entry to this show every time. So sentimental.
This video evoked emotions in me of my childhood and how wonderful it was to be a little girl in British Columbia and to watch this show. I always wanted the rocking chair. Maybe this is where I get my love of miniatures. Friendly Giant was a lovely man and a great musician.
Thank you for posting this! I liked the show from way back when. To this day after 40 years I catch myself whistling the tune. Thanks Robert and the rest of the cast and crew for making this show.
Thanks. I remember watching this and it was a huge influence even though I am 50 now I always smile. Just to see someone this nice and kind as well as Mr Rogers. Kept me sympathic.
This was my favorite show. Never did forget that song with the drawbridge coming down and the rocking chair. Forgot about the big boot but memory came right back! ☺️
For whatever reason, I just suddenly remembered my parents playing this show for me and my little brother. I’m a 2003 kid and I remember them always showing us shows from around their childhood in the 70s. My whole entire family is born and raised in Buffalo, so we’d always get all the Canadian channels too
Bob Homme was that special person that perked my interest and love of music. Even as an older man now, when I hear the intro song, " Early One Morning " I get somewhat emotional.
I love how he made me feel like he was just talking to me, made me feel special. How he says he's going to hurry up and open the doors just for me loved it.
If you are ever in Kingston, Ontario, Canada visit The Pumphouse Museum (see link). The village set from the beginning of this show is on permanent display there. It was donated to the museum by Bob Homme's family on the condition that it not be stored away, but would always be on permanent display. www.kingstonpumphouse.ca/visit
Grew up watching this ❤, then when my niece was 3 started watching it with her sitting on my knee 😊 she’s like the little living room , and when friendly would whistle for Jerome 🦒 now that little girl is 39 🥲 lovingly memories I’ll never forget
I did have a fondness for this show as a kid, it's a shame it was cancelled the year I was born, so I heard of it first through reruns...still, better than nothing ♥ Heh, I actually thought he had a bit of a striking resemblance to my paternal grandpa Thanks for the memories, Friendly ♥♥
I used to watch this on YTV all the time in the early 90s. No doubt they were re-runs, but even still, it was such a nice quality show that was so heartwarming. When my day at school was over (kindergarten was half days), I would go home and put on YTV and i would watch this show, The Waterville Gang, and Take Part. Man, I miss those days. Innocent times.
I have fond memories of this show. I always wanted to be in the rocking chair he set up by the fire. The impression it made on me is incredible because even as an adult i want to walk through that drawbridge and hang out with them.
This show was one of my absolute favorites. It drew you in like we were really there. I always felt really sad as the music played at the close... I just did not want to say goodbye to Friendly.
i never watched this show, it was a bit before me, having been born in '99. but whenever my parents would give me a bath when i was a very little kid, and they had to rinse my hair, they'd say "look up, look waaay up, and i'll call rusty". this is really cute. gives me Mr. Dressup Vibes.
I always appreciated that The Friendly Giant showed the printed pages of what he was reading to the children, as opposed to virtually any other kids show. That other, more well known, show simply taught children how to WATCH TV with a 60 minute stream of commercials for letters, numbers, colours, et cetera.
I'm just going over a traditional English arrangement called "Early One Morning" on page 6 of my level 2 Royal Conservatory Classical Guitar book (2018 edition). This piece sounds so familiar. It reminds me of a television show I used to watch as a kid... which led me here. Very special memories!!!
@@audreyseddon9749 Yes, I'm sure this show cost CBC a fortune to make, between the cast, the exotic set, and the special effects. The real problem is that whenever the CBC gets a hint of funding cuts, they axe what is popular to get the public agitated. When the funding gets cut to the point that they actually have to stand on their own two feet, they will rue that.
This was my All Time Favorite Kids Show when I was little! It was better than Captain Kangaroo, Mr. Dress Up and Mr. Rodgers Neighborhood and Sesame Street. Detroit, Mi.
I still hum that song to myself sometimes but didn't know where it came from. If I missed the part with the little chairs I was so disappointed. Such a simple time.
The end credits always made me melancholy as a kid. Particularly when the cow jumps over the moon. It meant the show was over and it was time to focus on other more mundane things.
