Defending champion, IM Bibisara Assaubayeva (KAZ, 2404) is on a roll. She won her last four games to become coleader with GM Tan Zhongyi (CHN) 12/16. She must beat GM Harika Dronavalli (2407) in the final round 17 and hope Tan also loses or draws, else she will have to play Playoff games against her. Can she beat Harika? Check out the interesting battle when Harika opted for the Larsen Opening, 1.b3.

Proud of Bibi!!! She deserves such an honor to be 2 times world champion. As for rapid chess, she was sick, it is clear; she doesn't look fresh even during blitz games. I do not care about classical chess at all. So, Bibi is one of the best right now.

Harika shouldn't have gone for Larsen's in such a crucial game where if she wins she helps her countrywoman Humpy win the title. She should have gone for her main repertoires. Still, congrats to Bibisara!

Wow, if king move to evade that mate, there will fork after knight move to f3 (if im not mistaken read the board)

5:10 Why didn't she just take the Knight here Qxd3 ?? Had Harika made the move maybe it would had been mostly a draw. And had this match drawn then Bibisara would had points equal to Humpy Koneru. Wonder what was the logic behind not taking the free knight at d3

it would be mate, Qh1 xeque, and Q to h5 mate
@indiafirst3676
@indiafirst3676 Год назад
@@aggilos6127 For Qh5 it would be Kg2. Anyway it's impossible to mate with only Queen for Black. King & Pawns were way back so in worst scenario Harika would had made it to draw. I mean leaving the Knight & Queen at such an advanced position so close to White King is indeed dangerous
@aggilos6127
@aggilos6127 Год назад
@@indiafirst3676 No, pay attention, in the time you mark 5:10 its harika's turn, If instead of Kg2 she plays Qxd3, the black would play Queen to h1 xeque and after that Queen to h5

I asked the same question, but then I saw a beautiful checkmate in 2.

@@haggaisimon7748 ye, it seems Bibisara knew that Knight was untouchable due to mate when she retreated with a King to f7- g8

Knight was available for free why didn't she take it

Not possible... After check white king only has g1. Then the black knight will fork King & Queen at f3. Harika loses the Queen. Can't stop that.

_"Knight was available for free why didn't she take it"_ You have to _see_ why to understand why.
