I wonder if any kid ever owned the Megadrive + MegaCD + 32X and then had a SNES and at the same time had Playstation, Saturn, and N64. The powerstrip next to TV must be full.
I had the Gen/CD/32, SNES, and PlayStation. I was really jazzed about the Saturn, but I could get only one, and the PS won out. I kinda got out of games around 98/99 and had bypassed RPGs. Around 2001/2002, I discovered Chrono Trigger and got back into games, picking up a PS2, Saturn, and Dreamcast. I think that if I had gone with the Saturn, I might have not had that lull, considering games such as Princess Crown, etc. Also, missing out on those RPGs hurt me, especially with the quad of Grandia I/II, Chrono Trigger/Cross. I'm glad I picked up most of them in the early-mid 2000s when prices were reasonable.
The 32X was a victim of Sega's self-destructive infighting. I think it could have been viable had Sega given it post-release support, *especially* after Sony spanked them hard at E3 with that "$299" shot across their bow. A smarter Sega could have gone, "Yes, the Saturn costs more than the PS1, but the 32X costs less than the PS1! So we've got both the high and low end of the market covered!"
@@PatmanQC-Arcade-Documentaries As that remake of Doom for the 32X shows us, the hardware was put out to pasture before anyone knew how far it could be taken.
The 32X was always destined to fail. It came way too late, was way too expensive and made no sense, considering Sega was phasing out the Mega Drive slowly anyway and the 32 Bit consoles were about to arrive. Already the Mega CD was a pretty bad decision overall, but at least it got some good games.
I think if they'd released it as a standalone console (I.e. the Neptune) with slightly beefed up specs for releaese in late 1993 it could've been a viable Mega Drive successor. Then they could've released the Saturn in 96 or so with better 3D.
After paying $229 for the criminally underused Sega CD, I'd had enough of SEGA... and I had been a huge SEGA booster since the Master System hit our shores. I did end up getting the 32X out of the CLEARANCE bin for $19 and grabbed several of those games. The guy in the store even offered to just give me a bunch of extra games to get rid of them. I literally had the whole Tower of Power set up at home, and there were only five s***y FMV games available that made use of the whole $700 monstrosity. It was the $70 game cartridges that killed it. Had they stuck with Kalinske's plan of Sega CD + SVP, we'd have had the same amount of gaming power, but none of the janky 30fps platformers and wires coming out of our ears.
Even though the 32X is still remembered to be a failed console for Sega, I still have at least some favorites for it, like Zaxxon's Motherbase 2000. I always found the idea of hijacking enemy fighters and learning their weapons interesting.
Why do people always refer as consoles to the 32X and Mega CD, when they were ADD-ONS for a console, the Mega Drive? Was that stupidity started by the Angry Video Game Cuck and now everybody just parrots that clown?
Thank you for making these videos, I always learn a few things along the way; especially for these consoles I didn’t get to play a lot with back in the day. Cheers!
Hey Patman! Huge Sega fan here..i had a Sega CD and I wanted a 32X but I'm probably lucky to have not wasted my money on it lol.. I recently got a 32X and Sega CD emulator so I am enjoying going thru the games I missed out on as a kid! Thanks for the timely video💯👍🏾
I really like the way the chuck rock racer fades in trackside sprites rather than just have them pop into view like most games of this era would. Subtle but well done. Damn, they could have put a shadow for the golfer.
Ive said it before, and ill say it again... The 32X had the BEST, most arcade accurate console port of MK II! That was the entire reason I rented the 32X back in the day... so I could rent MKII right along with it! I ended up paying two weeks worth of late fees, and had the owners of the ol' mom n pop video rental joint all pissed at me. Totally worth it!
I finally tracked down a sega 32x much later in life. I had one when I was growing up but ran into a major problem where it wouldn't turn on. I would move on to other consoles and sell it off. Later in life when I got it again, I figured out it may have been a simple the av cord goes in this imput as opposed to that one or.maybe I had a cord for the model 1 and it wasn't applicable with the model 2. Guess I'll never know the true reason but I have one now and that's what matters. I'll hopefully track down some of these games had no idea there were that many good ones. Knuckles chaotic and spiderman are at the top of the list but after watching your vids, they may be a few more to track down. Awesome job with the vid! 💪🔥🙌
There were a few great games on the system but there are also some bad ones as well so be warned. Knuckles was fantastic and Spider-Man was a lot of fun. Thanks my friend
Do another part please.. I have one of these for the Mega Drive and an everdrive so I have all the games. This add on fascinates me and I'm proud to say I own one.
Brutal: Paws of Fury had so much potential. If the programmers had given it more love, it could've been as popular as Clay Fighters or at least Shaq-Fu.
I'm surprised the 32X version of MK2 used the same music, but new sound effects. Thanks. BC Racers was unique for the 32X, taking advantage of the sprite scaling/rotation, as well as the excellent version of After Burner. The fighting game Brutal is really tough to get used to. Merciless AI enemies too. I need to finish that Sonic spinoff, but that elastic band gameplay is unique. Doom was a good use of 32X. An add on device that was definitely underutilized and sadly never got its chance to shine for long. Thanks for the great reviews, Patman!
The working title of Zaxxon's Motherbase 2000 is actually "Motherbase," and while it retained that title in Europe, it was rechristened in Japan as Parasquad. Not gonna lie, the only reason I know that is because of the Super 32x 15th Anniversary Album they released in 2010!
I owned the tower of power... I miss my collection; (life dictated i had to sell about a decade ago, and cheap, although it wasnt mint condition because ny consoles were in use 16 hours a day 7 days a week practically lol) However I am very grateful for emulation as I have my entire collection, plus all my favourite as arcade games, all in my pocket on my phone - with an 8bitdo mini controller hanging from my car Interior mirror... my now gaming room with Bluetooth surround... I appreciate what I have, but I do miss seeing those beastly consoles all hooked up!
@@PatmanQC-Arcade-Documentaries .....yup - and my 45 year old wife with emphysema copd, has just shown me a positive pregnancy test. Just NOW. There goes the crossbow collection lol.......oh what a day!
@@PatmanQC-Arcade-Documentaries no excuses, you could have started on the muff course, it's like the bunny slope. They did and still do got a kick ass arcade for the chickens....oooh my shoulder hurts, my fingers tired, I forgot my contacts....better know as barn door betties
I loved the 32x when it came out, its too bad SEGA didn’t launch it with all the classic super scalers and system 32 games Outrun, Thunderblade, Power-drift, Galaxy Force 2, Golden Axe: RODA etc. the ones that did release were incredible, like Afterburner and Space Harrier. Such a missed opportunity. The Saturn should have got the latest and greatest, which it kind of did, the rest should have been 32x. It should have gotten all the CPS 1-2 games or versions of them.
very good video..i own a sega 32x along with knuckles chaotix (some slowdown here and there, btw), vf1, mk2, metalhead and star wars arcade...a very underrated system....all things considered...it was quite powerful but, sadly, quite under utilized
But no Outrun i mean why - makes no sense. Aside from changing the prancinh horse its a sega owned game. Great video as always Patman always a good day when you drop a classic on all of us.
Because Outrun was outdated crap by that time and there already was a Mega Drive version? Who is going to buy the same old game over and over (except Rockstar fanboys with GTA V)? What they should've done was do a proper port of Outrunners, as the Mega Drive version was pretty bad.
Great video, always wanted a 32X as a kid, but as an adult I can see I was probably wise to have asked for games on others systems. Also, that joke about your ex-girlfriend had me say “Damn!” 😂
The 32x would've been able to keep up with the ps1 w an add on chip to the cartridges, like what the snes/nes did mid life on out. Would've been interesting had they just committed to the add on. Could've just held off the saturn, and then came out with it in '99, with fully updated specs. That's the only way the 32x and saturn would've worked.
I was bummed when they didn't release the Neptune (32X/Genesis hybrid). It looked pretty cool in the game mags & even as a Nintendo kid, I was really hoping to be able to get it. Pretty much what you said, if they had focused on that alone, it would've held its own while they perfected the Saturn/Dreamcast format for release in '98 or '99
27:37 Huh? I didn't know that DOOM 32X RESURRECTION was made by D32XR Team this game fixes all the problems make it much better then DOOM 32X version it has much butter music than the original and it put back all the missing levels this is way awesome and better version in my opinion I wish the AVGN should check this version out I love First Person Shooter games and DOOM is the best First Person Shooter games ever in my opinion I should definitely check out all DOOM version games carefully and check this game out it looks so awesome!!
Heyyy I have the same red shirt! And I’ve worn it in a bunch of my videos 😂 if you go on with a part 3, I’m curious to know what you have to say(if anything) about the X Men game. I played it on emulation, and there is no way this is a finished game. It plays like a rough draft of an idea that would become bigger later.
Man I played the living SHIT out of Dirt Trax FX on SNES, then got Motocross Championship and was so disappointed. I thought it was gonna be Dirt Trax to the MAX and it was so lame, lol.
@patmanqc-historyofarcadega6601 I ask since I've been a bit curious as to the inspirations behind the game. So far I haven't stumbled upon any development history for the game.
@@PatmanQC-Arcade-Documentaries its really good man. I emulate it on a hacked ps vita and for some reason the vita retro arch has a special version of the pico drive core that does not crash on 32x games..
ΒC Racers on the real 32X doesn't have such smooth frame rate. Its an emulation issue with bad timings. That's why i don't trust reviews made with emulators that aren't accurate. And 32X emulation is far from perfect.
