I just moved and for some reason, I craved listening to this song and this album again at my new home. I was obsessed with it when I was 16 and I have listened to it on many occasions since turning 31, but for some reason, I was absolutely drawn back here again today. This album was the soundtrack for my latter teenage years. I can't thank you guys enough for that. I'll be a fan until the day that I die, and then some.
I'm turning 32 this coming August and I remember hearing this when I was 16 or 17 too! I was behind the times unfortunately. Time absolutely flies, doesnt it brother?
Wow mans, I feel ya. Pretty dang same years/age span of really digging the fucks out of this one from the first time I heard it. Either on M2 or maybe MuchMusic(?) and throughout my (almost sarcastic use of the term) adulthood, i listen to this over and over, in about 3 or 4 day spells of running it into the ground a year, every year since. The fella singing harmony on this goddamn song...breaks my dang heart. Every. Dang. Sangle. Tummm. Bonus about this one: When I was innnnnn prolly 10th grade(?) I was figuring out different chords and shit, and I (if Lars Ulrich had even invented Napster by then) wanna say I had found this on Napster to try and learn it enough to put it on the hunnies at Speech/Debate tournaments. And my Pops came in my room and kinda was digging it too, but he asked who does this song..I said The Get Up Kids. He kinda made a face and said something like..sounds more like....The...Let Down.. Kids. And don't worry, this gets very emo, very here:. Pops was always more of a best friend than a..father, once I got past say, 30. That side of my family were all musicians. Equipment albeit super old equipment and instruments were inexplicably everywhere in the house we grew up in. And what's cool about that is, old gear like that always smells..odd. good odd, but just....odd. Anyway, once I became whom I turned out to be, Something about turning thirty, he kinda let go of that harsh-ish Do this/Don't fuckin do that, Boy. type dynamic that more than most dads just kinda assume they're supposed to keep, to try and steer you away from death or prison. One of, if not the-most persistent and important demonstratively things he spent our relationship teaching me, was that you didn't HAVE to be one of those 80yr old, blind, black guys from fuckin... Mississippi, to have, play, live, or understand the Blues. Anyway, We/I love you and miss you, Pops. J.D. Sims. Nicut, Oklahoma.
This song always breaks my heart. Because I too waited years and i sought nothing, but later after realize I was selfish in thinking others weren’t feeling the same about me. Communicate your feelings to others as they will re affirm or help make sense of what’s there.
Get Up Kids... Never fail to love their songs... Heard them when I was a kid... about a decade ago.. and their music is still as awesome... Penfold, Biffy Clyro, Further Seems Forever, The Ataris... and a few others.. Those were the good ol days of emo... What do the kids these days know about the music of yesterday?
I've been listening to this song since I'm 14 more or less. I'm 28 now and is just now I realize the song fits perfectly not for a couple but an absent parent...and it's sadder
Cuando comence escuchar rock a principios de los 2000' tantas bandas que escuche por mtv q alguna se me habia olvidado el nombre logre recordaba de este clasico del principios de los 2000'
@AtarisGuy33 I'm 57 and still love the GUKs, Texas Is The Reason was awesome, Loved Static Prevails by JEW, Christie Front Drive and early screamo - Reflector and Midvale. Good music.
it's because back in the day before emo become nu goth, that bands like fugazi, sunny day real estate, Juliana theory, saves the day and the get up kids, we bands whose lyrics wore their hearts on their sleeves before my chemical romance came around turn the kids into the next generation of goth. i will still put on Jimmy Eat World's Clarity to this day and enjoy every last minute.
Heck Yeah after so many years I get to see these guys on Sept 29! Cannot wait for the show hopefully they stick around after the tour so they could make some new material :D
Awesome video I'm totally agree with playmoreloud there are a lot of metaphors in this video, the desperation to stay with his girl and only pass his life making dolls, the guy doesnt eat, and in his mind only lives the girl, his eyes only shine cause cannot cry, get crazy an go out with a doll, and at the end she arrive with 24 years overdue only to go forever % ever , the house dispappears as his impossible love, I
MTV-2 kept playing this video this over and over during the 2002 VMAs. They repeated a few videos over and over to try to annoy people enough to tune over to MTV for the event. I didn’t. Kept MTV-2 that night. I’ve liked this song ever since.
@55Mizzou That's awesome! I personally couldn't get that into emo sadly because it wasn't always my favorite, but it is definitely a very important piece of music in the 90's and 00's, whether people put it down or not. I admire your awesome taste in music!
So everyone says that this song is about a chick and I thougth so too. But actually the song is about Matt Pryor(lead vocals) and about his father, (he explained the song in an interview). He rarely talks about his dad. So this song just talks about his dad being "a few years overdue." And also in Four minute mile he mentions him also in "Fall Semester." This song Is like a more mature version of "Fall Semester."
At this time this was considered such a jump from their sound. I immediately loved it, as I too was growing up and maturing in my musical tastes. This and Guit Show were really formative in my Freshman year of college. That and a Mark, a Mission, a Brand, a Scar. Had some girl in my dorm try to sell me on Story of the Year - she said it was "yummy". I begged to differ. (sounded like a Yellowcard knockoff to me) I digress... Emo tho! High five.
Well said mate, I remember when emo meant bands like Starmarket, Knapsack, Sunny Day Real Estate, Mineral, Coalesce, Jawbreaker, Jets to Brazil, Planes Mistaken for Stars, Samiam, Rainer Maria, The Jealous Sound.... Jeans and T-Shirts all the way, no eyeliner in sight, Just great emotionally charged music. If your a kid, don't be force fed this watered down generic shit! Check out some of the bands mentioned here and burn your Taking back sunday and MCR CD's Take your scene back!!!!!
@Buckeye1244 ...i'd have to say it is, especially since the fact that most bands that call themselves indie usually are under contract through a major label but to better fit their image get subcontracted out to a hipper cooler independent label...ex. paramore...originally to atlantic, but sub'd out to fueled by ramen...lots others as well....the strokes, radiohead, and so ooooooooon
A genre of all screaming was the inspiration of this genre. Tight pants are a form of anti-culture, even sported in Punk Rock which made Hardcore, which then created Post-Hardcore, which then gave you Emo. Not all modern Hardcore is depressing either. :b
