The "Ghostbusters" on John Belushi (1984)

I cut this together from some interviews that Bobbie Wygant (of NBC 5 Dallas/Fort Worth) originally conducted in 1984.
For more of her almost 70-year career as an interviewer, check out:
bobbiewygant.blogspot.com/
I opted to begin with her speaking to Bill Murray about his dramatic turn in The Razor's Edge, which was likely filmed around the time that film was released, so October of '84.
Earlier that summer she had interviewed Dan Aykroyd and Harold Ramis (among others) about Ghostbusters. Judging from Bobbie's apparel, those were all shot on the same day during the Ghostbusters press junket at the Plaza Hotel, in late May of '84.
With Bob Woodward's book Wired coming out, naturally the conversations kept turning to the trio's late colleague John Belushi, who had passed away two years before.
I tried these three snippets in various orders, but felt the sequence Murray-Aykroyd-Ramis worked best. Especially since it allowed me to end with that highly ironic soundbyte from Ramis about his policy on sequels.
I also liked that their reactions play against expectations. Murray seems the one most raw and emotional, Aykroyd calls out some of Belushi's faults, and Ramis smiles and chuckles about fond memories.
Bobbie particularly refers to Murray's 'soliloquy' to Belushi in a scene from The Razor's Edge. For the full effect, watch Piedmont (Brian Doyle-Murray)'s reaction to the loss of two of his comrades in this clip: • "You wont be missed."
Then watch as Larry Darrell (Bill) applies this same form of eulogy to Piedmont himself: • He Will Not Be Missed ...
You might also enjoy this November 1984 People Magazine writeup about the 'eulogy' scene: people.com/archive/bill-murray...
Thanks for watching and stay tuned!

I met Harold Ramis briefly at Second City. He was doing a reunion show around 2009. He was rehearsing with the cast in a small room. I was in a larger room with my sketch group. He would walk by the hall every so often and finally popped his head in to ask if we could switch, since he had a larger group. Didn’t have much of an interaction but the way he politely asked always stuck with me. Like he wasn’t above anyone. I’ve also met Aykroyd a few times, very nice and genuine guy. Talks to you like he’s known you forever.

I've got recuts of at least two more interviews she did with him in my playlist. This one was more about Razor's Edge, but she spoke to him again during the Ghostbusters press junket. And by the time she interviewed him again for GB2 five years later, she finally had a two-camera setup and no longer had to reshoot her own closeups at the end of the shoot. That one's got a much more spontaneous feel to it, at least as far as her side of it.

He is. But if you listen to Jane Curtin talk about Belushi, you get a different side of it. She talks about how she met him before SNL, they were auditioning for SNL and for another show, and spent time hanging out just being friends. But after SNL started, she said he disrespected her and all the women cast members, claiming that women can't be funny. She didn't seem bitter, she just said the guy she thought she was friends with wasn't that guy. She wonders if it was the drugs or the fame, or maybe both, that affected him. But he was a complicated guy, for sure.

@@Historian212 Id argue that in many interviews and even this clip, Dan also rebukes that John Belushi. He speaks about how at the end John wouldnt listen and wasnt much fun to be around. He also speaks in other interviews about his ego. I think it hurt Dan how much they drifted apart just before Johns death. Ill always respect the way Jane talks about it also. Her and Dan speak about it honestly, but also with respect. Jane had every reason to hate him after he basically told her that women shouldnt be on SNL. The fact she is willing to attribute that to drugs and not her ex friend speaks to her character

Glad you enjoyed them. Hours of raw footage from Bobbie Wygant interviews showed up on various websites. The majority of them were single-camera shoots where she would film her questions separately at the end to be intercut, although by 1989 she was using a two-camera setup, such as when she interviewed Bill Murray for GBII. I tried my best to cut them the way I thought they'd have looked for broadcast, though I'm sure most airings would've trimmed them down to the bare minimum of catchy soundbytes. Which in my opinion is a huge disservice to her true interview style. Here's some of the others I've uploaded, enjoy. ru-vid.com/group/PLQ-zqMhV3keB822EawjWJUS1ffok1W_BH

To whom shall I speak, and give warning, that they may hear? He that has ears to hear, let him hear. Are you saved? Where will you go when you die? Heaven or hell? The Gospel, which means the Good News is the news that God Almighty, the Creator came in the flesh as Jesus Christ to take away the sin of the world. The one God is a trinity of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. The Son came and laid down his own life to save ours. His sacrifice on the cross paid the price for our redemption with his own blood. On the third day he rose from dead and offers the gift of salvation and forgiveness to those that repent and trust in him. Although God's creation was created perfect, having no death, sickness and disease, the creation became corrupted through Adam and Eve in them disobeying God. In this rebellion the creation became fallen through the curse of sin and mankind became separated from God. This world is fallen, but God offers reconciliation to him through his provision at the cross. Ultimately God will restore his creation to perfection when he returns but those that who reject his offer of redemption will remain condemned by their sins and go to hell. John 1:1,14 KJV In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and THE WORD WAS GOD. [14] And THE WORD WAS MADE FLESH, and dwelt among us, 1 John 3:8 KJV He that committeth sin is of the devil; for the devil sinneth from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil. Isaiah 9:6 KJV For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty GOD, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace. John 1:10 KJV He was in the world, and the world was made by him, and THE WORLD KNEW HIM NOT.

I'm guilty of my own addiction issues, but thankfully I managed to avoid drugs and alcohol. That stance cost me a relationship once, when the girl decided drinking and smoking pot was more important to her than my friendship. I had the rare gift of hearing from her later, when she was embracing sobriety after getting arrested. She told me I'd been right about everything-- including my prediction that the friends who just wanted to party didn't actually care about her. That was years ago now, though. I don't really know if she managed to put those issues fully behind her. I'd like to believe she did, though.

Harold Ramis was a smart man. Sequels run the risk of being inferior to the original movie. Nobody wanted to return to do another Ghostbusters movie but Columbia Pictures executives felt like they were sitting on a gold mine and they wanted to catch lightning in a bottle again. It goes to show that if you throw enough money at someone you can get them to change their beliefs about anything. Anyway I was 10 in 1989 and I loved Ghostbusters 2. If I had my way they would have churned out sequels every summer. I’m glad that we now have a trilogy of sorts.

To clarify, Murray is talking about a scene in The Razers Edge, a philosophical film based a novel that Murray insisted be made before he would agree to do Ghostbusters
@LextheRobot
@LextheRobot Месяц назад
The video's description specifies that she's interviewing him about Razor's Edge. But the timing on things is more like Razor's Edge was already in production when Columbia greenlit Ghostbusters to be released one year later, so the "let me make this other movie if you want me for the comedy" claim is a bit of an urban myth / exaggeration. I think it was more about a distribution deal, I'll try to find one of the older sources to see what it said back in the day. Internet versions tend to get distorted over time.
@AllenSmithe
@AllenSmithe Месяц назад
@@LextheRobot so it is, but the title might add confusion. The timing of those two films doesn't actually dispell that myth at all, it would align with it in fact.

I`ll give Dan credit for being consistent over the years with his evaluation of this situation of his late friend John Belushi. Maybe Dan knows something about this situation that he can`t share publicly, but I`m surprised how he always gives Cathy Smith a pass for John`s death in a way.

The woman who was with John Belushi when he died was sentenced to jail and served 15 months for accidental manslaughter after injecting him with 11 “speedballs”. She was the ex girlfriend of Gordon Lightfoot and a former associate of The Band. She died last month.

Thanks for fleshing out the Cathy Smith connection. She was responsible for her actions and needed to go to prison. Dan Akroyd is very eloquent here about how friends deal with friends' addictions.

I read Wired by Bob Woodward back in the summer of 1989 when that awful movie verison was about to be released and I really loved the book. I was 14 and it was the first book I not only read cover to cover, but I read twice. I understood everyone's problems with it, however, no one ever says that the events depicted in the book didn't occur. Also, when Danny says Bob didn't write it, I think that was his way of sticking it to Woodward. If memory serves me correctly, I think Dan and Judy (Mrs Belushi) tried to stop the book from being released. Anyway, even if he didn't write it, it's still a good read and It is sensationalized, but then again Belushi was sensationalized. He was larger than life. I highly recommend you read it. Also read the book Judy Belushi wrote about John, if you really want to understand his warmth and the effect he had on his friends.

That was by deliberate design. I wanted to collect the Belushi-relevant segments from these three interviews with the actors who played the Ghostbusters. But for more of them discussing the movies, check out my full Bobbie Wygant playlist. She also interviewed Sigourney Weaver, Ernie Hudson, and Rick Moranis. Plus I've got two more interviews she did with Bill Murray.

Bobbie Wygant, of NBC 5 out of the Dallas/Fort Worth market. I did a playlist of her interviewing the cast of Ghostbusters: Sigourney, Moranis, Ernie Hudson, these three, plus Bill again for GB2, and even John Candy talking about how he and Dan started out together. That one's from 1980, as they only discuss Blues Brothers and Spielberg's 1941. ru-vid.com/group/PLQ-zqMhV3keB822EawjWJUS1ffok1W_BH

This was recorded in '84, so GB2 was still five years on the horizon at the time. In a lot of the press for GB2, Murray and Aykroyd and Ramis all talk about their hesitance to make a sequel, for fear of being accused of doing it just as a cash grab. It was like they all had to justify it to themselves. In Ramis' case it's actually a wonder he even agreed to make GB2, having a bad experience the previous year where he was more or less coerced by studio execs into Caddyshack 2. He even tried to have his name taken off of the picture, but they told him it could hurt the film's chances if word of that got around.
@LextheRobot
@LextheRobot 2 года назад
There's another irony about them discussing European Vacation. Ramis says he "doesn't believe in sequels" but apparently he had no qualms about having an extramarital affair with the director of European Vacation (Amy Heckerling) and getting her pregnant. Heckerling would later make 1989's Look Who's Talking, and according to Violet Ramis Stiel's book, when Harold revealed to her that she had a secret half-sister, even he acknowledged that the character in Look Who's Talking of the 'creep boss who gets Kirstie Alley pregnant and then won't leave his wife' was based on him.

Thanks. I also have a video about Harold and Belushi working together on stage at Second City and in the National Lampoon. There's a little bit of overlap with this video, but it also includes similar soundbytes from an interview he gave Bob Costas five years later, plus archival clips of Ramis and Belushi working together. And if you enjoyed Bobbie Wygant talking to these three, you may also enjoy my playlist where she talks to Ernie Hudson, Rick Moranis, and Sigourney Weaver. It's also got her actual Ghostbusters press junket chat with Murray (the one in this video was for Razor's Edge), a 1980 chat she did with John Candy, her GB2 interview with Murray, and even a bonus second interview with Dan Aykroyd by a different interviewer from the same press junket.

Whenever I think about John Belushi I think about Tommy from In Living Color both John and Tommy had drug problems. The only reason Tommy didn't die from drug overdose it's because of Jim Carrey and the Wayan brothers they helped Tommy to get help; they put him in rehab for like one or two years and when the final season of In Living Color was released he came back for a few episodes. I don't know about the details I don't know if Bill Murray or the cast of SNL ever helped John Belushi if they ever got him into rehab at some point I don't know if we have existed in the 70s 80s. I do know in the past Dan Aykroyd has said that in the beginning early years of SNL there was a lot of drugs I don't blame the cast members I just think maybe if they didn't try harder maybe they should have tried harder to help John. Don't get any wrong in my life I lost a lot of clothes people in my life and I always think about maybe I could have done something different. Maybe there was something else he could have done maybe if they knew about the whole concept of detox locking somebody in a room for a few days just to get the drugs out of their system maybe that could have helped John Belushi. As we know most addictions are based on the environment you live in and based on the people you are around not saying that Harold Dan and Bill were into that kind of stuff but we will never know. we will never know what was John Belushi's triggers for drugs
@crazyralph6386

Apples to oranges friend. John Belushi was on top of the world when he passed and was there was literally only one person who John ever listened to in order to get clean, and that was his wife Judith. He had a good run during the filming of Animal House, where he managed to actual lay off the booze and drugs the entire time(since she was on set as a chaperone) and pretty much all the way up to '81, until he set off to L.A, where all hell broke loose. Even his closest friends knew the impending doom, the moment Judy stayed in NYC. They just knew they'd never see him again, and there wasn't a thing they could do! You cannot blame his closest friends, who were really just a bunch of nobodies(like Carrey and Davidson at the time), compared to John's star power. Not only would John not listen to them, the powers that be in Hollywood would've prevented them from taking him anywhere, since he was being shopped with multiple scripts each day! He was trapped in that God forsaken shithole, with only one person in the world who could've saved him, and she may as well been on the moon. If anyone should take the brunt of the blame, its his stupid manager handing him over a thousand in cash, knowing he'd blow it on dope after a meeting with Paramount Pictures Michael Eisner, who wanted him to star in some low brow comedy film, in which he'd wear an effing adult diaper for 3/4 of it. He told his manager he'd seriously consider it(which was a bunch of bs, since Akroyd already told him of Ghostbusters) if he'd give him a large amount of cash on the spot. His manager knew damn well John didn't have that kind of money of him, since his finances were taken care of by his wife, for that EXACT reason! He, of all people knew giving a bachelor John Belushi that kind of money in Hollywood, is like handing a monkey a loaded AK 47. But like Dan said in this interview, John had a certain aura and magnetic personality about him, in which he could convince a stranger off the street to rob a bank with him, just as a prank. Maybe the manager fell under that same hypnotism, just like the drug dealer Cathy Smith did, by injecting him over 9 times in one night!!! Not many drug dealers out there, who want to actively kill their best clients? I'm betting he convinced her in some way to keep the party going, which ultimately killed him in the end, combined with his poor health? Even Jim Carrey in his prime, couldn't have saved Belushi.
