This week I'm shaving with the Gillette Guard; introduced to the Indian sub continent in 2010, it was designed and bought to market by Gillette to move an estimated one billion men, in emerging markets, over to cartridge razors. There is an interesting article, produced by Gillette, which I have included, as a link below this description.

Very Nice! It was good to see that simple shaving device put through its paces and it really did give you a solidly acceptable shave.

+WolfRanger2008 Thanks, Keith. It worked quite well with the soap. I was tempted to try a can of shaving product but going down that path, I think, only leads to a quick functional shave rather than a more enjoyable experience. I'll stick to soap and a brush!

This makes the ultimate camping razor. It's also good for retired people and people who only shave infrequently, because it doesn't care about longer whiskers. I get about 12-14 shaves out of each blade. Gillette is now using the cartridge in the Treo, which is designed for use in nursing homes. That makes alot of sense. The cartridges can be cheaply disposed of after each shave.
@FriendshipShaving
@FriendshipShaving 4 года назад
Yes, it would be a fantastic camping razor. I wish they would make it with a bamboo handle, perhaps something other than plastic. I've not seen the Treo. I shall have to make enquiries, especially as my sister runs a nursing home. Thanks for that information. All the best.

India does have more than billion people but not all shave with that cartridge razor. Because of mass availability of Excellent Barbers in India, most people dont shave at home rather go to salons.

Hello Atul. I do know that not all Indian people shave with that cartridge razor. The information I related was gathered by Gillette as they were trying to break into a share of the very large Indian market. My apologies, if I didn't express myself very well in the video. I was interested in the single blade cartridge razor which is not for sale in the UK, except through the Internet. Thank you for the information regarding the wonderful Indian Barber's salons. Kind regards - Mark. 😃

Had I discovered the Guard before I started DE shaving, I might have stopped with it. Shaving is so comfortable with the Guard, I have to watch out for over-shaving. I've given away quite a few Guard razors to try an open gents eyes to the non multi-blade shaving world. Baby steps...

+Blain N Hey, thanks Blain. Great to have your comment. It was a pretty good shave, had I used it more frequently, I think it would have been even better. A good experience and I'm glad I put it on video. The response has been quite favourable. Cheers.

+Another Cut Above Thanks Cris. It's strange to shave with a single blade cartridge, not unpleasant at all but I didn't enjoy using it as much as a de razor. I can't really put into words why that is.

Friendship Shaving as the plastic bar just above blade was pulling ur hair up.......its a bad experience ....i used this razor for 6 months in 2011...scarred my face almost permanently by using mach3 7 years prior to that..then in 2012 tried de razor ....took me 6 months to get hang of it.....but now i get most awesome shaves in the world
@FriendshipShaving
@FriendshipShaving 7 лет назад
+rajeshsweet194 Hello Rajesh. It shaved me reasonably well, as you saw but I do not have the experience of using it for six months, like you. I have also, never used a Mach3 but I believe it was a very popular razor. I'm with you, my friend; I prefer a de razor but, I hope, using an cartridge razor, sometimes will keep my video channel interesting and varied and allow me to receive interesting comments, like yours. Thank you very much.

+marco cerqueglini I'm the same, Marco. You might see me shave with a cartridge occasionally, just to remind myself. I know many people get great shaves from cartridges but I get much more enjoyment from my de razors. Happy shaving 😃

Also couldn't resist the temptation to try the Gillette Guard so I ordered one from India. I was impressed with how well it worked but the cheap handle does detract from the experience. I guess the handle is understandable when one realizes that in India the cost of the razor with handle is only about 23 cents US.
@FriendshipShaving
@FriendshipShaving 6 лет назад
Too true, Robert. It did work surprising well. I was pondering getting one of the old Gillette twin blade cartridge razors. I think my first razor came in red or white, one had a fixed head and one a swivel head. I think I was 17 and in all honesty didn't need to shave very often at all. I do think any more than two blades is definitely overkill, but each to their own.

Gillette is quite the most successful blade seller in India but all the barbers still prefer the DE blades Mostly the lower class use a DE razor it might suprise you but they are cheaper but among the middle class it is a popular choice to use mach3 or fusion blades I found your videos quite educational ,i view them as a shaving guide thank you 🙂

Hi Sawan. Thank you for getting in touch. I'm very interested, but not very surprised, to learn that Gillette are very successful in India. I think they would have spent millions to make sure they gain a large share of the market. It's good to know that barbers and people who don't have much money, still prefer de blades. Very sensible 🙂 Your comment was very interesting. Kind regards - Mark

@ Friendship Shaving: When new products are launched, everyone gets excited to try at least once. So when gillette introduced their cartridge razors for the first time back in 1960's in Western and European world, many people ( I mean MANY) there too switched to these. After prolong use they realise how bad these cartridge razors are,...so these people again switched back to normal DE razors. Now Gillette when they came to India in 2000s, they introduced Mach 3 but it was way more expensive in India (approx 40-50 dollar) in early 2000s....cartridges were like 10 dollar each. So only rich got their hands on these and poor middle class people started fascinating about it. Slowly middle class started using these too....Now when those old gillette users and middle class have started switching back to DE ones, they are targeting poor people with cheap stuff...I am 27...I started with Mach 3 turbo when i was 16-17....always thought that to be the best one....constantly upgrading the cartridges....But since last 1 year have switched back to DE ones...I will not be surprised if u accept that ur father or some of ur uncles were also among those who switched from DE to Cartridge to DE again...

Ah, I see. Thank you for a very informative comment. It's interesting to know that Gillette flooded the Indian market with an expensive cartridge razor and only turned to the Guard cartridge razor, once their market share had fallen. It's great to read about your own experience and your knowledge of Gillette in India. I started shaving with a Gillette cartridge razor and shaved with cartridges for years until turning to a double edged razor, just a few years ago. My Father shaved with a de razor, went on to try cartridge razors but then started to shave with an electric razor and stuck with that for the rest of his life. My Grandfather's both used straight razors, all their lives. Take care. Regards - Mark.

Gillette Guard has become my go to razor. This gives me the smoothest shaves, I use combo of Gillette 7o clock super platinum (for with and across the grain) and Gillette guard (for against the grain). Works like charm!

Hi Anu. Strangely, I was just looking into the Gillette Guard again. I wish it wasn't made with plastic. That is the only downside for me, as we still have to dispose of the plastic but it is a good shave.

Friendship Shaving DE shaving has stood up well against the onslaught of the multi blade all singing all dancing all face scraping plastic razors for decades, so I would doubt the chance of this one razor destroying it. It will not be superseded by any, it is here to stay.

+Hugh Neek I hope you're right, Hugh. My impression is that DE shaving has gained in popularity over the last 10 years or so. There are so many great products for us, the manufacturers of those products are confident of a continuing market. Cheers.
@electricaleducation1086
@electricaleducation1086 7 лет назад
Hugh Neek the thing that concerns me is that these blades are still available to us as there is still a market for them in less fortunate countries but if those countries were to be sucked in to an affordable cartridge razor they could quite possibly become less and less available, they were more or less obsolete here in the U.K for many years and it's only due to the rise in popularity and online shopping that in recent years they have become more obtainable 👍🏻
@hughneek12
@hughneek12 7 лет назад
Electrical Education At the very worst the blades might become less available and more expensive but will not go out of fashion really. I hate all multinational monopolies mainly because they offer us less choice in all areas of consumerism and act as bullies with their might. It is about time the consumer stood up for him (and her)self and learned to vote with their feet and money, because after all, we are really the powerful ones, the guys with the cash. The problem is we are unaware of that great power. We could always start by objecting politically to the massive tonnage of shaving plastic thrown into landfill each year, that might appeal to the ecowarrior politicos in Brussels and Washington etc. Its worth a go.

Was thinking about your comment of "if you were in a developing country...." And, I stop to think... India is a pretty big manufacturer of DE blades and razors. Seems to me that Gillette would be sending them back to the dark ages with that disposable :P

We have all the models of Gillette selling here in India.This Gillette guard is targeted for low income customers.Most middle class average Indians usually prefer Gillette march 3 or fusion 5.

I know in terms of safety razors Pearl and Parker are pretty big manufacturers and of course there are many safety razor blades produced in India by Gillette. That somehow seems ironic as the focus of the report I read from Gillette, on which I based that video would suggest they were trying to get away from razor blade production.
@hughneek12

Bought some on eBay. The guard is, as far as I am concerned, my favourite plastic razor. Gives a great shave every time, although not as great a shave as the DE shave, it is not far off. My plastic razor of choice should I give up DE shaving.(very unlikely) One thing to watch is the pressure used while shaving, while it is hard to Nick yourself whilst using the guard, it may irritate your face or neck if you are heavy handed. Four handles plus 100 cartridges for £23.99 UKP. on eBay. Not bad. BTW, as it is hard to Nick yourself while shaving with the guard, that is unless you are entirely reckless, it also would make an ideal ladies razor.
@FriendshipShaving
@FriendshipShaving 7 лет назад
+Hugh Neek Hello, Hugh. There has been a fair bit of interest in this video. I have certainly enjoyed using the Guard razor and, like you, I think it would be my choice should I ever go back to using cartridges. That's a great price for about two years worth of shaving!
@FriendshipShaving
@FriendshipShaving 6 лет назад
Any razor would make your face sore if you were heavy handed and applied to much pressure, it negates the efficiency of the razor which is obviously meant to slide over the skin rather than be pushed into the skin. It's a good razor, considering it is very cheap. It's the quality of the blade that makes it good. Harry's are no doubt good too but a completely different concept, as it's a cartridge razor.
@willywonty2612
@willywonty2612 6 лет назад
Mike Barooshian The guard razor has a ribbed guard (from which it takes it's name) and heavy handed pressure will give you irritation just like any razor. Great little razor, in my opinion, the very best of plastic cartridge razors. Give it a try, I'm sure you will agree it's better than Harry's. BTW., Don't knock all made in India products, these razors and the famed Parker DE razors are very good products.

Hey uncle... I'm from India and I am from middle class family...and I'm student... Gillette guard this product can I use on my chest or stomach???? And how many time can I use 1 single blade???
@FriendshipShaving
@FriendshipShaving 3 года назад
Hello, my friend. You can use the Gillette Guard on your chest and stomach, although I do not need to shave those body parts. Body hair will be longer and less coarse, so may clog the razor. Really there is no definite answer to how many times the blade can be used. It depends on how thick and coarse your hair is. I can only suggest you try it. All the best.👍
