Joan of Arc; the Maid of Orleans; Jeanne D'Arc, Jehanne la Pucelle: she goes by many names. A provincial French peasant girl, barely in her teens, living in relative poverty, illiteracy and complete subordination during a time of total war and medieval brutality. Imagine this traumatised though deeply pious child having visions of angels and saints, and being commanded by them to seek out the dauphin (the French word for Crown Prince) and convince him to let her lead his demoralised army and liberate their kingdom from a powerful enemy. Most people then, as now, would have thought her at best, mentally ill. But so determined was she to carry out her mission, that no amount of opposition, discrimination or humiliation was going to stand in her way. Never taking NO for an answer, she eventually got her audience with the dauphin, she also got her army, and with it, proceeded to blaze her way across France, inspiring troops and civilians alike to fight on against overwhelming odds and turn the tide of war against England finally in their favour; always leading from the front and being herself seriously wounded on multiple occasions. This naïve teenager would soon wipe out the celebrated army of English longbowmen that had so humiliated her country at Crecy and Agincourt, such that it would take a generation for them to appear in force again on any battlefield. She would live to see her king, Charles VII crowned, only to suffer capture, a show trial and a horrible demise at the hands of the English; based entirely on her being a woman daring to participate in a man’s world.

You have a way of telling a story that makes it come to life. I have such a clear idea of Joan as a real person, waiting to be seen by the Dauphin, telling soldiers to confess and behave, and handling herself with dignity in the travesty of her prosecution. I appreciate that you told the narrative and saved the modern interpretations for the end. Yes, I am a 21st-century woman, but I can only understand history if I can see it from the perspective of the people who lived in other times. Sometimes, I wonder what we miss in living our lives today with our minds and hearts closed to other possibilities. Thank you.

It is so sad when people say Joan just had a mental illness. This girl was raised in a war torn land! That was all she knew. Her parents thought a king born in France would be what is best for their future so she was raised around people who fully supported the disowned king elect. She did what she thought would be best for her home and the people in it. Her story should be a lesson to us all about war. A cautionary tale we all should pay attention to because some areas of the world are looking a lot what Joan had to endure.

Have you read "Personal Recollections of Joan of Arc" by Mark Twain? It's written from the perspective of a childhood friend who ended up accompanying her as her scribe. It's written in the year 1492 and the writer is an old man by then. It's accurate and detailed biography but entertainingly fleshed out. Twain spent a few years researching for it in France.

After a Scots army defeated an English army at the battle of Bauge to give the French hope that they could prevail against England, Scots became Joan's bodyguards.
@RayB1656
@RayB1656 8 месяцев назад
That's spot on, absolutely. Patrick Ogilvy from Angus Scotland commanded the Scottish Guard protecting Jehanne la Pucelle, with 50 Scottish knights and 70 archers . Ogilvy and Carmichael, including numerous other Scottish families, Crichton, Kennedy, Lennox, Steward, Stuart, Galloway, to name a few, also fought the English troops with Jehanne ! As Jehanne la Pucelle entered triumphantly in Orleans, Spring 1429, the most famous ''March of Robert the Bruce'' was playing in the streets ! It is said that without the thousand and thousand of Scottish troops on French soil, during the Hundred Year War, (the Auld Alliance) , history might have been different ! That Scottish protection was only for the royal family yet Jehanne was included ; furthermore, she was also granted the privilege and given spurs of gold, which was a sign of royalty !

This video admits she was put on trial by the English, but then claims it was because she was a woman rather than because she opposed the English. They also executed a boy named Guillaume le Berger for opposing them, and he certainly wasn't a woman. There are dozens of eyewitness accounts from people who were at her trial who provided behind-the-scenes details of why she was executed (i.e. to discredit her cause and thereby discredit Charles VII as well), so the matter isn't really in dispute. The video also claims she was given a new army to lead, which is misleading on both counts: Charles VII's records show that the units in "her" army were just the same ones that had always been there, and it was always led by a nobleman (the chain of command is also recorded) rather than by Joan directly. Some of the commanders said they eventually came to accept her assertion of Divine support because she seemed to be able to predict the future accurately on a number of occasions, which led them to accept her advice; but they made the decisions and sometimes ignored her advice.

@heroesandlegends
@heroesandlegends 2 года назад
Great suggestion- so many heroes, so little time! I certainly don't shy away from controversy. But first and foremost, the labour of love that these videos demand necessitates that the subject significantly resonates with me personally. But beyond that I do consider who my viewers would find both fascinating and illuminating. We know a lot already about many contemporary heroes - so I try to focus on the more obscure or forgotten ones. From the stable (excuse the pun) of the four horsemen, I'd probably look at Isaac Asimov, partly because he is less known to people nowadays, partly because he was a trail blazer in that domain and partly because as a Gen-xer I loved his fiction writing as well. You've given me something to think about so thanks!

@@Laocoon283 Having seen most of the films over the years, you can see a clear progression in the productions that reflects cult marxist politicization of the real history, which is one of the best documented instances of revelatory spiritual experiences, since it was thoroughly documented in ecclesiastical trials by both political camps and a Vatican retrial before her beautification. The remakes of the story are interesting studies in cultural marxism, going from pretty straightforward presentation of the historical facts to very politically stilted ones emphasizing feminist or pacifist themes and playing down the religious and spiritual questions her life raises. At the rate things are going, we are very like to see all replaced by an even more "woke" fantasy that makes Joan trans or non-European.
