No I didn’t like the episode unfortunately. This guy and 99% of the other nutrition people you’ve brought on are basically grifters and have fringe views because the truth is boring! I get it you’ve got the podcast. I’ll save everyone a lot of time. Go and watch the episode with Layne Norton. That’s the only one who is willing to be honest.
A quote from Dr. Lustig that I never forgot …… “Any food that is linked to a television commercial should not be consumed.” Brilliantly said, and a great boundary to put in place.
Stephen I discovered this Doctor 3 yrs ago after my GP told me I was pre diabetic. 3 yrs on my blood levels are completely normal and everyone tells me how good I look recently. This man should be on every TV in the world but the food industry is trying to shut him up. Follow his work and you will change your life like he has changed mine. Stuart J 59 year old male uk
Brillant to finally here someone speak up so clearly, fascinating explanation, thank you! In my family we've always been obsessed with our food and the cooking of it, I was taught food is our medicine for life and even under financial stress I never waiver from home cooking from scratch day in day out, and at a lesser cost. But like everything it's a discipline that pays off. All processed foods are poison as is sugar, my father taught us that from day 1, stay simple and as natural as possible.
@@audience2if fast and summaries were efficient we would not have the health crisis we have now. Because everybody gets quick info in the internet these days, and follows it. Yet….
One of the most important gifts I gave my children growing up was the gift of eating well and enjoying fun activities. I’d say we ate healthy food that I cooked for them 80% of the time with 10% of the time where we went of to decent restaurants that served wholesome food and 10% of junk food. On my time off we went out and did physical activities such as hiking, going to the dog parks, going to specific children activities and our vacations were always active. Because of this I have 2 very healthy happy adults who know how to cook well and spend plenty of time in the gym doing my outside fun activities.
I am a 48 year old with Cerebral Palsy. I have been ambulatory since age 4. When I consume even the tiniest amount of sugar (less than a teaspoon), I experience paralysis. I can't move my arms or legs and my speech, which is otherwise completely normal becomes very impaired. We make all of our food from scratch now and I don't have a problem.
We don’t have to buy the rubbish they want us to!! Cook everything yourself in one go & freeze it, .Then you can have a quick meal, just prepare vegetables & get your main protein out the freezer to defrost the evening before. I keep my weight even. Intermittent fasting is wonderful & has been such a blessing to me. I yo yo dieted for 60years, I am now feeling fitter!!
Its about the flow of money. The food industry makes $$$ and creates the health issues and the pharmaceutical industry( including the diet industry) makes even more $$$$ in offering "solutions" to those same problems.
its essentially the same as the tobacco industry - but actually worse - bc school systems in usa anyway (not sure about uk, etc)....feed these industrial produced edibles for kids lunches -- that is not food - food is nutritious.
You guys with your degrees are part of the problem. The past 4 years have indicated that we aren’t in a scientific era. Only manipulation. Only signal carriers for corporate determinations. We get it.
I’m a Physician Assistant in primary care in California. I deal with these health issues every single day with my patients. This video is so amazing - I’m now suggesting that ALL my patients watch this! This is truly life changing! One of your best videos ever. Thank you Stephen and thank you Doc!!!!
Please do not speak of any advice on health or medical. As a physician assistant you are essentially worthless. You don't go for the many years of training that physicians do. You do not do the many hours and years of residency training that physicians do. You do not get taught the same in terms of toxicology pharmacology even physiology. you simply go to school for 3 years. Now please kindly shut up
As a newly qualified doctor, what’s interesting about medical school is we get taught the several underling mechanisms Dr Lustig is talking about (e.g. Gluconeogenesis, glycogenolysis, the role of insulin in growth etc) but its never pieced together in such a way that’s makes it now seem completely obvious to me how weight gain occurs. One day I hope his work and research wins him a Nobel prize
@@hannamaryann0705i went 6 months 0 carbs. Cured my migraines, lost weight, felt better than ever. When I started "eating normally" again my headaches came back and felt so slowed down. Then I realised keto is meant to be my lifestyle not a temporary diet. I now eat around 10g of carbs per day though.
For anyone looking for a summary of the how to lose weight part, the argument he makes is that you need to reduce sugar intake. Added sugar is what you largely cut out, and carbohydrate is what you really decrease and monitor your intake of. Calorie restriction is really only an good long-term option if your portion control is an issue.
@@Terrobul Not necessarily. The issue is that carbohydrate is, by definition, sugar. There is sugar in alcohol, bread, fruits, etc. This is important because your body controls the levels of free glucose in your blood very, very closely/tightly using hormones like insulin and glucagon (I am sure you have heard about insulin through topics such as diabetes), so when you have high levels of glucose in your blood and you ingest food, your body is then going to store it and compared to low levels of glucose is when your body is going to break down fat for energy. This is a very basic understanding of this, but hopefully you get the idea.
Dr Lustig doesn't know what he is talking about, it's not the sugar intake it's the fatty acids that build up in your cells and liver that causes insulin resistant cells and type 2 diabetes
Dr. Lustig is my hero. His book Metabolical saved my life. None of the doctors told me that it was the food that I was eating. I went from 317 to 180 when I stopped eating sugar and ultra-processed foods.
@@smckenz5- Thank you. I cook my food. I eat real food, nothing man-made. I don't go out to eat because I don't know exactly what I'm eating. I don't eat sugar, seed oils, or grains. I work in the yard for exercise.
@@kimsinghrai- I eat organic beef, chicken, eggs, and seafood. I eat organic produce. I drink organic swiss water process decaf coffee. I sweeten it with allulose instead of sugar. Dr Lustig was one of the first I came across when I needed to fix my weight. I started listening to him whilst walking. It inspired me to stay away from sugar. I lost 70lb in 5 months.
When my daughter was diagnosed with brainstem glioma as a young child, I did as much research as I could on cancer, neurology, and diet. I identified glucose as a serious threat to her survival and we changed our way of eating. We were fortunate to have her enjoying life for 20 years. I do believe nutrition did contribute to her extended life span.
I work with near drowning children on home life support, mechanical ventilation, tube feedings, etc. I just wonder what if the industray tube feeding was changed to a healthy diet fed through the tube.
Best interview about this. I like the guy who is interviewing because he asks questions instead of assuming everyone knows what is being talked about. I learned more from this interview than watching 20 different videos. I am hooked on this channel
As a pediatric nurse, I must say this is one of the most wonderful podcasts I've ever listened to. I will definitely save it and send it to some folks.
3 years ago I stumbled upon and listened to a talk by Dr Lustig on RU-vid… changed my life. I proceeded to listen to multiple talks and interviews over a few days. Now at 77 I feel better than I have in years-no meds, no issues . I immediately cut all sugar, ultra processed foods and alcohol. This was a full stop.. no messing around! I now consume a REAL food diet, relying on lots of protein and whole fruits and vegetables. I’m never hungry and feel so drastically different. This man is impeccable in his research and has been beating the drum against the “food” industry for years. I feel so lucky and blessed that I found and listened to him and changed my ways. Bless you, Dr Lustig!!
I really like your satement: "I immediately cut all sugar, processed food [square / rectangular box foods] and alcohol". I have done the same. Now I never used to drink alcohol, but I had a sweet tooth. I have gotten so so much better, and have lost 16 kilogram...

Home cooked food is the best. Nothing tastes better than a meal you put together yourself. As a mother and wife watching my family eat a home cooked meal brings me so much joy.
I have a mat in front of my sink that says "Cooking with Love provides food for the soul." I only have myself to cook for, most of the time, but it's still a good idea, much better than eating out all the time.
Yes, you're Wright, but it is although time consuming, especially for working parents with children. I'm a grandmother with grown up grandkids? I know how hard it is.
@@elkegreiser1799 How much more time-consuming is cooking compared to going out to a restaurant, looking at the menu, making a decision, ordering the food, waiting for the food, and God only knows what they use in the food to make it. This is the most sophisticated person on topic unhealthy foods I've ever seen. He is not afraid to say the truth about the influence of big food companies and how they alter our opinions. God bless him for what he does!
Well you should watch more RU-vid videos, because there's a lot more: Dr's Joel Furhman, Michael Gregor, Neil Barnard, Esselstynm T. Colin, Dean Onrush, Sean Kim, John McDougall. Just saying.
Yes the food and health authority should do something. Whilst the money goes to corporate pockets, it’s creating a national public health issue and will cost the government more money in the health department
You need to have him on your show again! No one is talking about baby and infant nutrition, he is right, our children don't have a voice. They depend on what us as parents believe is best for them, but the food industry keeps lying to us and selling all types of toxic food.
I had severe hives for 30-40 years on my arms. I went to many many doctors with no improvement. If I could use enough ice to prevent myself from scratching myself bloody during the day, I would do it at night. Finally, a chiropractor said that her mother had scars on her arms like mine, and that she had stopped eating sugar for a week and a half and the hives had gone away. Done! After decades and decades of going to doctors, and thousands of dollars, gone.
“Pleasure is dopamine, happiness is serotonin. Dopamine is an excitable neurotransmitter, which wants you to be tickled not bludgeoned. When it’s over stimulated neurons begin to die, such as in addiction, which anything triggers in the brain that is used in excess triggering of dopamine. But Serotonin cannot be overproduced and killed off….” This! This right here!!! Explains so much!!

Every parent should watch this video. I love Dr Lustig. I am 70. I have been addicted to sugar my entire life. I am Type 2 diabetic, have HTN, had colon cancer 9 years ago, hyperccholesterol, hyper thyroid and psoriatic arthritis.I will go weeks eating right, then one slip up and go back into the old habits. Immediately, I feel inflammation in hands and joints. Are there treatment centers for sugar addicts. I love how I feel when I am eating right but hate when I lose control.
Hi. Have you been on on a keto diet? It is the easiest diet I ever went on. It means you can give yourself treats, like strawberries dipped in very dark chocolate and whipped cream. You need never be hungry. Eventually, it will become a way of life.
The comment above mine is one way to address things. Another is to go full carnivore, eating fatty beef everyday kills all cravings , and in time carnivore changes the hunger signal, your brain gets the message to come out of survival mode. some folks have difficulty with such a big change all at once, Howe for some it is necessary to stop the addiction. Either way, you need to nourish the brain with quality animal fats and amino acids, and get a good mineral and electrolyte supplement like what keto chow has (don’t get any of their stuff with Splenda or sucralose in it). Doing these things will really help the PHYSIOLOGY of sugar addiction. It’s not just a willpower thing. If you do check out the carnivore route, you can get support and coaching from the “steak and butter gang” . You don’t have to do it forever, just do it long enough to heal and get your control back.
Excellent interview. Thank you, Dr. Robert Lustig. I’m currently dealing with insulin resistance and I have done a lot of research and you are spot on! Unless you are buying vegetables or fruits everything in the grocery store has “added” sugar! It makes me so angry! It’s truly not about calories. We’d also need to change voters’ public opinion to overcome the influence of lobbyists in America. Unfortunately we would need laws to keep the food industry in check, but half the US voters “don’t want the government telling us what we can and can’t buy”. The food industry has convinced us it’s a question of personal responsibility, which is partly true, but how true is it when not everyone has that information or are too addicted to sugar to change? And how does that affect our mental health and self-esteem when we are convinced it’s totally our own fault? 😖

When I did keto for two weeks and got my blood lab, my doc prescribed me with Statins. I took it for 5 months and realized I am making a mistake so I messaged my doc and challenged her about Statins and why she prescribed me. She didn’t answer so I fired her. My keto journey continued and after 6 months, all my blood labs went great. My cholesterol ratio went down to 3.9. When I was pregnant with my first child, I could not stand the smell of sugar for more than a year. I lost so much body fat and it stayed away effortlessly. The amount of food I required was less than half of what I’d normally ate. Whenever I ate something sweet, I’d take two bites and have sugar overload. It just didn’t taste good anymore. Absolutely love how Steven conducts these interviews. He always asks the right questions, the ones I usually have on my mind right before he voices them. . I’m growing very fond of this channel. Even better in my headphones in the morning during my urban hikes.
Actually he does, but with the right questions and they're not annoying, they are relevant plus Steven has a natural charm, he's very handsome and wellspoken so when he speaks and asks a relevant question, it's a pleasure to hear.
I agree, the interviewer is rare because he actually follows the narrative and isn’t just waiting to interrupt with scripted questions that don’t pertain to what has been stated. He isn’t making the interview about himself, or making inane comments just to hear himself talk. Quite refreshing.
Hooray! A man who talks total sense & totally agree with him. I have been screaming it from the rooftops for years. I used to own a fitness and nutrition centre; and could see the total health dysfunction done by years of yoyo dieting and calorie counting... especially creating a perfect storm with people in their midlife/menopause. And yes, young people are now also being devastated early. I only had ONE person that I can recall, from ages 18-65 who were NOT on some form of daily medication. The focus on "losing weight" has to end, especially when much of it is via unhealthy methods; and changed to a focus on eating for great health (which by definition, means that people will be a healthy weight for them too), vitality and optimum capability, in all areas of life

The healthy industry ( medical industry) want us to be ill because they are paid by big pharmaceutical companies to prescribe us medications. My GP surgery are paid zero to give nutritional advice yet paid to prescribe diabetic drugs. It’s a complete outrage.
Professor Lustig is such an intelligent and articulate person. In a world where so many charlatans present themselves as authorities when they know nothing, it's a breath of fresh air to listen to this expert.
I’ve struggled with sugar addiction & binge eating since I was 10yrs old - I’ve only recently (thanks to this podcast) been able to do a deep dive into the intersections between my brain chemistry + mental health diagnoses + relationship with food. All that complex work has been life changing and since Feb 2024, I’ve consumed so much less sugar than ever before. I spend more time thinking about the needs of my micro biome & figuring out what I need to do to help the little guys than eating sugar. The experts that have come on this show & shared their research have empowered me so much & I am just so excited to learn more about food and how to consume it better. I just want to love my micro biome and give it the goodies it needs to thrive
I don't believe Dr Lustig because he has publicly backed the ketogenic diet a diet that has the highest incidence of heart attack and stroke. Fatty acids aka saturated fat is the root cause of insulin resistant cells in the first place which is exactly why mitochondria in your cells cannot process glucose sufficiently which leads to super elevated blood sugar levels type 2 diabetes and metabolic disorders
Robert Lustig is both outstanding and unforgettable. He has the gift to impart information in a manner that is easy to understand, motivational and actionable.
I love how Dr. Lustig is frequently on the verge of swearing during interviews! How can you "not" considering the BS that is the modern medical and food industries!!! 👎
When I was in grad school, I was mostly eating very healthy, I was barely drinking any alcohol or eating sugar. I had a candy dish in my office for my students who came to my office hours. Some days I would eat the candy and noticed a direct correlation with getting bad sleep that night and feeling like crap the next day. It made me stop eating the candy altogether
You are absolutely not disliked, you are liked. You saved me and hopefully a lot of others, to do a much more happy, energetic and awesome life. Thank you Dr. Lustig
Love the no-nonsense approach in this video. It’s clear that focusing on quality over calories is the way to go. I’ll definitely be incorporating some of these tips into my routine.
I quit sugar after realizing how much control I had given to this substance. No control over my appetite, insatiably hungry and never satisfied, feeling perpetually bloated, inflamed, and constipated. I kid you not you guys it’s only be about 12 days of 0 added sugar and only low glycemic foods (although I will have potatoes & sourdough (not fried) after a veggie starter) I have lost 10 pounds, feel satiated with my meals (big focus on protein and veggies), feel energized, I have been SUPER regular, my skin is already glowing, and I don’t even crave sugar! Sweet things don’t even really look like real food anymore! I will indulge in watermelon, or make a Greek yogurt bowl with berries and almond butter and coconut flakes and it all tastes so SWEET with no added sugar at all! I am NEVER going back. After years of struggling with body image, disordered eating, and my relationship with food, I finally feel free! To anybody else out there struggling with these things, I promise there is a light on the other side of the tunnel, but so long as you consume added sugar and these high glycemic index and hyperpalatable foods, the proverbial shades will block out that light and keep you in a negative feedback loop. Never forget that a sick individual is the easiest person to be commodified, so there is literally every incentive in the world in a capitalistic society to keep you sick. My heart goes out to anybody struggling with this addiction, my agnostic self truly prays for everyone afflicted, and I’m grateful to this doctor for being courageous in the face of so many institutions who would be very eager to shut him up.
@@UnovianPrincess well I did a 36 hour fast in the beginning which I think mitigated a lot of the withdrawal symptoms! Initially I also had a little bit of added sugar in like 85% dark chocolate etc. that maybe helped with the withdrawal? The cravings were really intense at first but I would just give myself an apple and some string cheese and almonds etc. until I just couldn’t eat anymore and that really helped!
@@Heyheywereallfriendshere thank you. I did keto and IF before for 2.5 weeks and I felt the best I’ve felt in years. But it didn’t last long because I went on vacation and people couldn’t stand that I didn’t want to eat absolute trash so I caved and have been on the keto wagon since. It is so hard for me to cut carbs. It’s like I get sick until I eat them every damn time I try to quit it
@@UnovianPrincess one thing I’m implementing for sustainability is a hard “not in my kitchen” policy when it comes to these types of foods. I will not buy any of these items, but occasionally I will have them with other people, and only a little! One thing that helps I’ve noticed too is not telling people 😂 people sort of, I’ve noticed, push you to consume these products to justify their own consumption, like when an alcoholic tells you they don’t want to drink alone. If it seems like you just don’t want it in that moment, it’s easier to sort of fly under the radar. Also not beating yourself up if you cave in at any point. Just start fresh the next meal/day! Nobody has to live in your body but you, the good feeling only gets better I promise you!
Yes, sugar is extremely addictive. I am one of five siblings. We grew up poor,, with poor nutrition as our Norm for our entire childhoods. We're all addicted or have been addicted to something our entire lives, the oldest one of us now being 65. My addiction is sugar. I battle it every single day.
Thank you so much for this. When I go without sugar or carbs I become unbearable, irritable, even aggressive. I suffer from IBS, brain fog and irregular sleep patterns. Following this, I know that I need to break the habit and reclaim my health.
The same happened to me. I can promise you this.. after about a week, something flipped inside me. Once I got through that horrible flu like feeling, suddenly I felt better than I've ever felt. I doubt I'll ever put sugar in my body again. It's like poison
I went cold turkey from sugar it took me about 5 days to feel OK and after about 10 days I couldn't bare anything sweet it made me feel sick. My whole taste buds feel brand new now. Everything tastes so much nicer. Give it a go you won't look back.
I watch many videos on RU-vid regarding food and nutrition and I can honestly say this interview is one of the most informative I’ve watched in a very long time. Excellent.
The best interview you have done so far. No interruption, good questions and exceptional answers. Keep learning and educating ourselves for a wanted free will. Excellent job!
My mother was a dentist and told me 50 years ago to eat properly and no sugar. Denmark has by law reduced a lot of the issues talked about. But we can all reduce salt, sugar, chemicals and bad fats in our daily lives ❤️
I remember that Denmark was the first country in the EU to decide to ban trans fat in food, and the EU court decided to sue Denmark for “creating technical commercial obstacles”. Denmark accepted go to court, but suddenly EU turned on a dime, gave up any legal repercussions. It had suddenly turned out that trans fat indeed is poisonous and should not be put in food. Trans fat is amazing for conserving food, because no microorganisms want to eat it. But various other poisons probably would work the same way, it you put it in food.
Thank you for bringing Dr. Lustig on the podcast. I've been following him for quite some time now and I already commented several times, this man is one of the best educators we have out there. We meaning our species. 💚🙏🏻🦋
Dr Lustig has changed my life. 3 months of No added sugar - feels like I’m going through my own rebirth!! ❤ and no sugar cravings (I eat 1-2 pieces of fruit 1-2 per month and don’t feel any need to eat them more often) His books 📚 are 💎!! 🙌❤️
@@lauramonahan9343the first that blew my mind was ‘Fat Chance The bitter truth about sugar’ - after reading this first book and watching his videos I got rid of all junk food from my cupboards, I’ve also read Glucose Revolution, Ultra Processed people, obesity code and mark hymans books and Michael’s Mosley recipe books. Metabolical is the next great book by Dr Lustig, I wish all doctors would read it!!! I know I’m at the point of no return and in love with clean eating 🥰 ❤
@@ceeez3072he talks about things that are not advertised and why we need to stick to the way we were created by the universe/god and lean towards gods made foods rather than man made foods. Because food is our medicine with both the power to harm and heal. And of course it’s entirely up to us what we believe - McDonald’s ads with their amazing meal deals or fat free no added sugar stuff or we choose natural foods… food is not just carbs, proteins, fats it’s also consists of medicinal compounds embedded in animal foods or plants 🌱
I’m not sure whether the CEO realizes it or not, but I believe he’s moving a little right, as his eyes are being opened, veil is being lifted. It’s beautiful thing to see.
