Dr. David Litwa is a scholar of ancient Mediterranean religions with a focus on the New Testament and early Christianity. His current research question focuses on why some early Christian groups (so-called gnostic and Marcionites) came up with the idea of an evil creator. He has recently completed a project comparing ancient angelification and daimonification in dialogue with modern posthuman transformation.
Before joining Australian Catholic University, he taught at Virginia Tech, the College of William & Mary, and the University of Virginia (UVA). In 2012, he received a Ph.D. from the Religious Studies department at University of Virginia. Prior to that he received an Master of Divinity at Emory University and a Masters of Theology at Duke University. Currently he became a member of the Steering Committee of the Bible, Myth, and Myth Theory Group at the Society of Biblical Literature, as well as a member of the Society of New Testament Studies (SNTS).

The Demiurge or YHVH is EGO! In greek the phrase "I am that I am" the I is Ego! All our problems we have with understanding comes from the fact that we are forced to think in language and language is tricky business. The entire Idea of magic comes from language with it's spelling or vice versa.

The question about AD 70 is pertinent. Many agree that Jesus’ apocalyptic preaching, and Revelation, refers to the destruction of Jerusalem and the Temple. Josephus records that the Christians escaped unscathed thanks to an “oracle”. I’ve always suspected that, looking back at that event in recent hindsight, Christians like Marcion both assumed the destruction of the Mosaic covenant, and may well have also suspected that its deity was a liar who promised the world to them and instead enslaved, exiled, and slaughtered them all time after time.

I really love Dr Litwa’s work! I am halfway through Found Christianities- the book. I watched the whole series on his patreon and had to immediately begin diving into the Gnostic materials myself. Earlier I was reading The Wisdom of Jesus Christ and the poem in the beginning sounds kinda similar to the Tao in a vague way. The idea of a Divine Human as god is also extremely interesting. I’ve been wandering all over the theological spectrum during my life but have been a naturalist and atheist for quite a while but lately I am beginning to see how abstract and metaphorical truths can be conveyed via fictive mythological historiography and my previous biases are evolving towards an appreciation of all stories people tell that lead them towards being better people who seek truth and knowledge. My continued prejudices are directed at willful rejoicing in ignorance and hatred of freedom like what the modern Republican Party in America has become.

Jacob is more of a thinker/commenter because he's familiar w/Gnosticsm, I like Dr. Litwa because he teaches history and avoid as much as possible to taunt other beliefs, he usually avoids self opinions and just simply tells that this is the way it really happened. More power to both of you! 😎

Gnosticism is a broad church the common themes running through the different sects are The OT God of the Jews is either evil or ignorant and they were antinatalist as they realized this is Hell and they implored people to end hell by refusing to procreate. That brought the sword of Rome down on their heads. John Lash points out in his books that these people never called themselves Gnostics they called themselves the Teleostoi. Gnosticism is believed to have influenced Buddhism, the Sufis of Islam and the Kabbalist are Gnostics and the two big names who brought the Gnostics back to modern-day consciousness were Philip K Dick and Carl Jung. There is even a Gnostic Codex named after Jung as his institute bought it. Regarding Jesus opinion was divided some claiming he was a myth and some saying he came in the body but was replaced at the crucifixion. The Gnostics shunned material possessions they preached in the fields and only accepted alms for educating the ignorant fearful plebs.

Actually, for the "who is the devil's father" question, at around 23:00 of the video, read the tractate "The Paraphrase of Shem," in the Nag Hammadi Library (you can read it online or listen to it in audio form on youtube). In it, is the being called Derdekeas, who is said to have created the world so that he could remove the Mind from the "Darkness" (a character from the beginning, which was below the other two, the Light, which had its realm, and the Spirit, just below the Light, which had its realm, and then Darkness, which was below Spirit's realm) who prided himself in it, and that was crookedness to do that. It also had taken the Mind, from what I seem to somehow compute from reading that. It's a tough read, because it goes way back, and I've been studying it to compare with other knowledge I have.

Gnosticism is simply a variant of Christianity. The one that the Romans didn't select. Christianity of all types exists by claiming everything from everyone else that they like, and deny what they don't. The Gospel of Thomas was found with the Gnostic stash and it isn't Gnostic either. There are excerpts from Plato's republic in there too. Everything from antiquity sounds similar to everything else in some ways. They are encoded the same teaching inside of different shells.

The flood was to re set the earth's path in the image of the demi urge (yahweh, Zeus, Baal), the ark narrative being a metaphor for the lower animal nature of mankind introduced to this dualistic age of light and dark. The giants were the mystics and their gods who practised the ancient path of the gnostics their craft being known as heka.

Free will is abandoned once one turns themself over to a supernatural ...................... something or other. Especially if they only learned their local religion. That's not choosing very much. But it sounds good to say it anyway.

Free will is part of the trap... nothing is free is it. You create an evil world filled with traps then tell the players they are free and have "free will" then they fall info evil traps run back to you for help and answers and you pretend yhey had free will and you didn't design the traps for them. Then you throw them into one of your religious cults and there they become slaves

I read the Gospels when I was 19 years old in the year 2010 and having never heard of marcion, and the definition of gnosticism in the mainstream back then being much different than what people say now; I independently came to the conclusion that the New Testament is" God most high" saving the world from the Fallen Angel Who tricked man into believing that he was God, which is Yahweh from Genesis where is there anyone who's actually ever just read it, that the first 13 chapters of Genesis, God is evil in the book

You cannot disprove the resurrection. If you want to disprove Christianity just do that. “But if there be no resurrection of the dead, then is Christ not risen: and if Christ be not risen, then is our preaching vain, and your faith is also vain.” ‭‭(1 Corinthians‬ ‭15:13-14‬ ‭KJV‬‬). Christ can’t be some guy who an angel tricked him into thinking he was God. No angel ever came to him in any of the four gospels and said this. His miracles prove that he is God. Especially the resurrection. Jesus even says: “If I bear witness of myself, my witness is not true. There is another that beareth witness of me; and I know that the witness which he witnesseth of me is true. Ye sent unto John, and he bare witness unto the truth.” ‭‭(John‬ ‭5:31-33‬ ‭KJV‬) I used to be an atheist. If atheism was a cause of the mind I would’ve converted a long time ago. But it is not. Atheism is a matter of the heart and your bitterness and coldness toward God. And the fact that every apostle with the exception of John (only because he had to write the Revelation Of Jesus Christ in his old age) died a horrible death adds to its validity. God is not evil in any part of the Bible. He is morally perfect. You have no objective standard of morality, so your statements hold no water and are as fluid as it when it comes to morality. Even in sodom and Gomorrah, who was by the way sacrificing newborns to idols and played loud drums so the parents couldn’t hear the baby scream as it’s skin was being burned off on top of the abhorrent sexual immorality there. And I’m not just talking about homosexuality, they did it with everyone and everything. Nothing was off the menu for these degenerates. God wouldn’t destroy sodom and Gomorrah for even 10 righteous people there. “And he said, Oh let not the Lord be angry, and I will speak yet but this once: Peradventure ten shall be found there. And he said, I will not destroy it for ten's sake.” (Genesis‬ ‭18:32‬ ‭KJV‬).

@@christopherdavis7069 The Abrahamic god isn't real, champ. Look into his origins. Nevertheless, the historical reconstruction that El was the chief god of the Israelites is not indebted only to the testimony of the (rather late) biblical witness of P. *Numerous biblical texts attest to the fact that the titles, functions, and the imagery associated with the Canaanite god El, as revealed by the Ugaritic texts and the Canaanite myth of Elkunirša, were assimilated into the profile of the deity YHWH.* According to the Ugaritic texts, El was known for his *wisdom* (e.g., KTU2 1.4.V.65[6]) and *great age* (’ab šnm, *“Father of Years,”* and drd, *“Ageless One,”* in KTU2 1.4.IV.24 and 1.10.III.6, respectively),[7] his *compassionate nature* (lţpn il dp’id, *“Kind El, the Compassionate One,”* e.g., KTU2 1.16.IV.9), his role as *father of the gods and humanity* (’ab ’adm, *“father of humanity,”* KTU2 1.14..III.47, and bny bnwt, *“creator of creatures,”* KTU2 1.17.I.24) and *creator of the cosmos.* [8] El was the *divine King* (e.g., KTU2 1.2.III.5-6) and the *head of the pantheon or divine council* (referred to variously as the dr ’il, *“circle of El/Family of El,”* KTU2 1.15.III.19; mpħrt bn ’il, *“the assembly of the sons of El,”* KTU2 1.65.3; bn ’il, *“the sons of El,”* KTU2 1.40.33, 41; pħr kbbm, *“assembly of the stars,”* KTU2 1.10.I.3-4; ‘dt ’ilm, *“assembly of the gods,”* KTU2 1.15.II.7; cf. El was also known for his *divine patronage and blessing of progeny to humans* (as in the Epic of Kirta; see, for example, KTU2 1.14.III.46-51), for his *appearances to humans in dreams* (e.g., KTU2 1.14.I.35-37), as *being a healer* (KTU2 1.16.V-VI), and for his *dwelling at the sacred mountain* (e.g., KTU2 1.2.III.5-6) at the *sources of the mythical rivers* (KTU2 1.2.III.4; 1.3.V.6; 1.4.IV.20-22; 1.17.V.47-48) in a *tent* (KTU2 1.2.III.5; 1.3.V.8; 1.4.IV.24; 1.17.V.49; c.f. the Canaanite myth Elkunirša which *describes El’s abode as a tent[9]).[10]* *To underscore the fact that terminology and imagery originally used for the god El was adopted by the Israelites in their descriptions of YHWH,* the following brief summary might be placed in comparison to the discussion of El above: YHWH is an *aged, patriarchal deity* (Ps. 102:28; Job 36:26; Is. 40:28; Dan. 7.9-14, 22), *a father* (Deut. 32:6; Is. 63:16; 64:7; Jer. 3:4, 19; 31:9, etc.), *merciful and gracious* (Ex. 34:6; Jon. 4:2; Joel 2:13; Ps. 8615; 103:8; 145:8, etc.), *a divine patron who bestows the blessing of progeny upon Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob,* often manifesting himself in *dreams or visions, a healer* (Gen. 20:17; Num. 12:13; 2 Kgs. 20:5, 8; Ps. 107:20, etc.), who *dwells in a tent* (Ps. 15:1; 27:6; 91:10; 132:3) *amidst the heavenly waters* (Ps. 47:5; 87; Is. 33: 20-22; Ez. 47:1-12, etc.), the *creator of the cosmos,* who is enthroned as *heavenly King* in the *divine council* (1 Kgs. 22:19; Is. 6:1-8; cf. Ps. 29:1-2; 82; 89: 5-8, etc.) on the *sacred mount of assembly* (e.g., Is. 14:13). @Christopher Davis Jesus was a failed apocalyptic preacher and didn't fulfill the requirements of the Messiah. The following quote from Stephen L. Harris, Professor Emeritus of Humanities and Religious Studies at California State University- Sacramento, completes this point with a devastating argument. *Jesus did not accomplish what Israel’s prophets said the Messiah was commissioned to do:* He did not deliver the covenant people from their Gentile enemies, reassemble those scattered in the Diaspora, restore the Davidic kingdom, or establish universal peace (cf.Isa. 9:6-7; 11:7-12:16, etc.). Instead of freeing Jews from oppressors and thereby fulfilling God’s ancient promises-for land, nationhood, kingship, and blessing- *Jesus died a “shameful” death, defeated by the very political powers the Messiah was prophesied to overcome.* Indeed, the Hebrew prophets did not foresee that Israel’s savior would be executed as a common criminal by Gentiles, *making Jesus’ crucifixion a “stumbling block” to scripturally literate Jews.* (1 Cor.1:23) ------------------------------------------------------------------ The end is near? *The Bible’s New Testament contains a drumbeat of promises that Jesus is ready to return any day now, implying that it will happen so soon that it would be wise to keep it in mind when making any kind of life decision. But it didn’t happen.* The following is a sample of verses professing this theme: Matt 10:23: [Jesus said to his disciples] *‘When they persecute you in one town, flee to the next;* ***for truly, I say to you, you will not have gone through all the towns of Israel, before the Son of man comes’.*** (They fled through the towns but the Son of Man never came) Matt 16:28: [Jesus said to the disciples], *‘Truly, I say to you,* ***there are some standing here*** *who will not taste death* before they see the Son of man coming in his kingdom’. Mark 9:1: And he [Jesus] said to them [the disciples], *‘Truly, I say to you,* ***there are some standing here*** *who will not taste death* before they see that the kingdom of God has come with power’. Mark 13:30: *[After detailing events up to end of world, Jesus says]* ‘Truly, I say to you, ***this generation will not pass away*** *before all these things take place’.* Mark 14:62: And Jesus said ***[to the high priest - died 1st cent. AD]*** ‘You will see the Son of man seated at the right hand of Power, and coming with the clouds of heaven’. (The high priest died and never saw the Son of Man) Rom 13:12: The day is *at hand.* 1 Cor 7:29: The appointed time has grown very short; from now on, *let those who have wives live as though they had none.* (Funny thing to say if you didn’t think the end was imminent) 1 Cor 7:31: For the form of this world is *passing away.* Phil 4:5: The Lord is *coming soon.* 1 Thess 4:15: *We who are alive, who are left* until the coming of the Lord. Hebrews 1:2: *In these last days* he has spoken to us by a Son. Hebrews 10:37: For yet a little while, and the coming one shall come and *shall not tarry.* James 5:8: The coming of the Lord is *at hand.* 1 Peter 1:20: He [Christ] was destined before the foundation of the world but was made manifest at the *end of the times.* 1 Peter 4:7: The end of all things is *at hand.* 1 John 2:18: *It is the last hour;* and as you have heard that antichrist is coming. Rev 1:1: The revelation of Jesus Christ (i.e., the end of the world)…to show to his servants what must *soon take place.* Rev 3:11: [Jesus said] ‘I am *coming soon’.* Rev 22:6: And the Lord…has sent his angel to show his servants what must *soon take place.* Rev 22:20: [Jesus said] ‘Surely I am *coming soon’.* *It is puzzling to understand why Christianity survived the failure of this prediction. It is not ambiguous.* This would be like a rich uncle who promises to give you $10,000 ‘very soon.’ Ten years pass and he still hasn’t given anything to you, but he still says he will do it very soon. Would you still believe that it will happen any day? No, you would realize that it is a false promise. *For some reason, Christians cannot comprehend that they have been scammed. Jesus is not coming back, not tomorrow, not next year, not ever. But they still think it will happen any day.* www.kyroot.com/ *Watch* Jesus: Apocalyptic Prophet, Historical Lecture - Bart D. "When we say…Jesus Christ…was produced without sexual union, and was crucified and died, and rose again, and ascended to heaven, ***we propound nothing new or different*** *from what you believe regarding those whom you call Sons of God. [In fact]…if anybody objects that [Jesus] was crucified, this is in* ***common*** *with the sons of Zeus (as you call them) who suffered, as previously listed [he listed Dionysus, Hercules, and Asclepius].* Since their fatal sufferings are all narrated as not similar but different, so his unique passion should not seem to be any worse." *Note how Justin (Martyr) is less of a fool than modern Christian apologists. He admits that differences don’t matter.* Since each and every one of the suffering and dying gods are slain by different means, one cannot argue the mytheme requires exactly the same means of death. “But Osiris can’t have inspired the Jesus myth because Osiris wasn’t nailed to a cross” is a stupid argument. The mytheme is simply death. Being killed. Suffering and dying. The exact mode of death can vary freely. It makes no difference to the existence and influence of the mytheme. It’s simply the particular instantiation of a generic abstraction. *And Justin’s argument (that Satan invented these fake religions to confuse people) entails Justin agreed the mytheme existed: indeed, it was demonically promulgated, multiple times. Intentionally.* *Likewise, Justin notices the mytheme is not virgin birth, but sexless conception. Of which many examples had already been popularized in pagan mythology (there just happens to also have been examples of actual virgin born gods as well). And by his argument (that the Devil was deliberately emulating the Jesus mytheme, in advance), Justin clearly accepted the same principle for “rising again” after death:* the particular exact metaphysics of the resurrection could, like the exact method of death or conception, vary freely. The mytheme consists solely of the abstraction: returning to life. Somehow. Some way. We will say bodily, at the very least. But what sort of body (the same one, a new one, a mortal one, an immortal one), didn’t matter. *If it had, Justin would have made the argument that “those gods” weren’t really resurrected. But that argument, never occurs to him. Nor did it to any other apologist of the first three centuries.* *Ancient Christians well knew there was nothing new about their dying-and-rising god. Not in respect to the mytheme.* Their claims were solely that his particular instantiation of it was better, and the only one that actually happened. *They didn’t make up the stupid modern arguments that dying-and-rising god myths didn’t exist or weren’t part of a common mytheme everyone knew about. For example, in the same century, Tertullian, in Prescription against Heretics 40, makes exactly the same argument as Justin. Funny that. They had better access to the evidence than we do. They knew what was really and widely the case. We should listen to them.* Google *"Dying-and-Rising Gods: It's Pagan, Guys. @Christopher Davis Yes, the fictional Abrahamic god is evil. If you can't see that then you've been brainwashed into believing immorality is morality. *This website is designed to spread the vicious truth about the Bible. For far too long priests and preachers have completely ignored the vicious criminal acts that the Bible promotes. The so called God of the Bible makes Osama Bin Laden look like a Boy Scout. This God, according to the Bible, is directly responsible for many mass-murders, rapes, pillage, plunder, slavery, child abuse and killing, not to mention the killing of unborn children.* I have included references to the Biblical passages, so grab your Bible and follow along. *It always amazes me how many times this God orders the killing of innocent people even after the Ten Commandments said Thou shall not kill.* For example, God kills 70,000 innocent people because David ordered a census of the people (1 Chronicles 21). God also orders the destruction of 60 cities so that the Israelites can live there. He orders the killing of all the men, women, and children of each city, and the looting of all of value (Deuteronomy 3). He orders another attack and the killing of all the living creatures of the city: men and women, young, and old, as well as oxen sheep, and asses (Joshua 6). In Judges 21 He orders the murder of all the people of Jabesh-gilead, except for the virgin girls who were taken to be forcibly raped and married. When they wanted more virgins, God told them to hide alongside the road and when they saw a girl they liked, kidnap her and forcibly rape her and make her your wife! *Just about every other page in the Old Testament has God killing somebody!* In 2 Kings 10:18-27, God orders the murder of all the worshipers of a different god in their very own church! In total God kills 371,186 people directly and orders another 1,862,265 people murdered The God of the Bible also allows slavery, including selling your own daughter as a sex slave (Exodus 21:1-11), child abuse (Judges 11:29-40 & Isaiah 13:16), and bashing babies against rocks (Hosea 13:16 & Psalms 137:9). ***This type of criminal behavior should shock any moral person.*** ***Murder, rape, pillage, plunder, slavery, and child abuse can not be justified by saying that some god says it’s OK.*** If more people would actually sit down and read the Bible there would be a lot more atheists like myself. *Jesus also promoted the idea that all men should castrate themselves to go to heaven:* For there are eunuchs, that were so born from their mother’s womb: and there are eunuchs, that were made eunuchs by men: and there are eunuchs, that made themselves eunuchs for the kingdom of heaven’s sake. He that is able to receive it, let him receive it (Matthew 19:12). *I don’t know why anyone would follow the teachings of someone who literally tells all men to cut off their privates.* The God of the Bible also was a big fan of ritual human sacrifice and animal sacrifice. *And just in case you are thinking that the evil and immoral laws of the Old Testament are no longer in effect, perhaps you should read where Jesus makes it perfectly clear:* It is easier for Heaven and Earth to pass away than for the smallest part of the letter of the law to become invalid (Luke 16:17). There are many more quotes on this topic at my Do Not Ignore the Old Testament web page. *If you follow the links on this site you will learn about all the nasty things in the Bible that are usually not talked about by priests and preachers.* www.evilbible.com/ ------------------------------------------------------------------ Google *"10 Biblical Atrocities That Go Overlooked (Part 1) - Real Bible Stories"* Google *"10 Biblical Atrocities That Go Overlooked (Part Two) - Real Bible Stories"* Google *"God's 12 Biggest Dick Moves In The Old Testament - Gizmodo Australia"* Google *"The Will of God - The Christian Delusion"* Google *"The 10 Worst Old Testament Verses by Dan Barker - Freedom From Religion Foundation"* Google *"Top 20 Evil Bible Stories - Religion - Nigeria"* Google *"God is the Source of Morality. You are both right and wrong. The concept of a god somewhere in the sky who judges and makes creatures from dust is not true. The truth is much stranger than that. The simplest way it can be described is that there is only one being in this universe. This being split itself into innumerable fragments, in order to have the experience of being many. It is a game. This being is an actor, and we are the characters it is temporarily playing. There is no god other than you. You are god in disguise as a human. So am I. So is everyone else.

You're forgetting about Noah and Abraham. Through Noah God blessed the earth, and through Abraham God blessed all families on earth. Not something tyrants do. Also Genesis 1 and 2 are different stories about different Gods. Genesis is a complex book which rewards careful study and fools fools, gnostic or otherwise as you've demonstrated by your foolish equation of God with a tyrant. God sent the flood because of violence not for violence. The facts are being twisted!

Usually fundamentalist Christology is just like that, Jesus would be Jehovah😅 and it makes the story more confusing but my friends who are into Gnosticsm termed JC as the Good Sabaoth and the other one Evil Sabaoth haha
@Mehcool
@Mehcool 2 года назад
@@redrock7243 It's not "fundamentalist," it's biblical. Compare Malachi 3:1 and Isaiah 40:3 with Mark 1:2-3. Let's look at Isaiah seeing Jesus, YHWH, testified of John: Isaiah 6:5 And I said, “Woe to me! For I am destroyed! For I am a man of unclean lips, and I am living among a people of unclean lips, for my eyes have seen the king, Yahweh of hosts!” John 12:41 Isaiah said these things because he saw his glory, and he spoke about him. You can look at Isaiah 6:1-13 and John 12:38-41 for the full context. Just 3 examples, there are many more.

I love how "Dr Litwa" is so objective and of course takes great pains to not misrepresent the Hebrew scripture, especially since he is humble enough to admit that he doesnt understand it in the slightest. I also appreciate that he didn't neglect to tell the audience that the Jewish people have a carefully preserved oral tradition that bothers to explain the meaning of the Hebrew scripture, an oral tradition which all gnostics take great pains to ignore and slander. Its understandable why gnostics do that, if they didn't then some of their followers would study the Jewish tradition and would then proceed to conclude that the gnostic 'understanding' of the Hebrew scripture is complete rubbish at best, or willfully deceitful at worst.
