When US Gold snared rights to The Godfather in 1991, they planned to release two titles; a graphic adventure and an action game. Unfortunately, only the action game ended up coming out - although Delphine's sci-fi twist on the story evolved into something different. Enjoy this look at a game that's as beautiful as it is boring.

The graphics of the Amiga version always fascinated me. They have this painterly quality, especially int he opening shots and city, with its hazy look and the glowy neon signs. Also it features a great use of colors / palette. It is interesting, how they seem to be one giant bitmap, unlike the tile based approach usually seen in games around this time. The hard cut to Navy Seals really demonstrates this difference very well. I would love to know more about these graphics. Where they entirely created on the Amiga? Where they paintings that got scanned in?

The graphics look as detailed as Bitmap graphics come ; and judging the visuals, even on their own merit, divorced from medium? Tells that EVERYTHING looks "photo-realistic" ("photo-realistic" as ran-thru the filter of Bitmap graphics) ; so I'm very confident the art was heavily heavily referenced. It would take a long time (possibly a too-too-long time) to produce these graphics freestyle, without photo-ref ; and, I think the ol' production-line/business mantra is: 'if you can find a way to get the same result, but quicker? Then we will do that'. Namely: I think the artists could probably have painted these scenes from their imaginations - but I don't think there would be that time afforded, when you are making a product like this. If the boss caught you doing anything but craning forward, working? You were likely in trouble, LET ALONE going googley-eyed, staring at nothing, eyes unfocused, lost in a reverie of a piquant memory of how the light played on the drain-pipe you observed on the way to work this sun-dappled Morn.

what an absolute classic.. i'm talking about Flashback, of course. the best thing about this Godfather game, besides the graphics, is the deadpan comedy of the disaffected cops and civilians just going about their business while these suits keep firing off guns in all directions. thank you for another thoroughly enjoyable video!

Yeah the PS2 Godfather game is probably my fav Mafia/GTA style thing of all time, I generally don't 100% those, just get bored and play them as sandbox (I got amazing property detruction score in L.A. Noire, running over so many fedoras, Public Menace achievement attaboi!) But that one? Marathoned it.

When I saw this I thought to myself "Phew, another Kim Justice video for me to enjoy." Got myself a seat before getting to it and relaxing to what I'm sure is another great video.

As someone who finished playing through The Godfather (The Don's Edition) for the first time recently, I agree! The dev's approach to open world in it reminded me of Sleeping Dogs; populate the world with fun, accessible activities above all else, and you certainly don't need a huge world and endless hours of mindless side missions to do that, they both hit the nail on that one. Looking forward to the upcoming video!

The round up in the first 3 minutes really emphasises how 'realistic' Amiga games tended towards brown, sepia and beige palettes.

Had a hooky copy of this on the Atari ST - it was indeed... pants. Delighted I didn't pay for it. 1992 was a fun year.

I remember buying this game with my father (For the Amiga) the box was so cool looking. But damn was i disapointed.. Dont think i ever got past level 1 lol :D

The cool thing is that Delphine's games are now getting an Evercade release. Although Operation Stealth and that time travel one are a bit... filled with absolute adventure game fuggery, let's say. Obtuse puzzles. Plenty of moments to soft block yourself for missing out specific, teeny tiny items on-screen, and the worst offender of all, the arcade mini games that will instantly kill you.

That is a strange story, I know movie licenses don't come cheap but I guess people do these deals without even thinking about what the heck they will do with it Ie. did anyone working there even like the movies?🤨 I can read between the lines and see how the Flashback engine might have made a really interesting Godfather game, definitely could have captured some of those cinematic flourishes well. Well here's to Pete Lyon, those are some excellent graphics, a nice compromise of Sepia and more vibrant primary colors.😍 Reminds me of Dick Tracy on GEN/MD in the gameplay and side scrolling perspective. Gallery levels are nice, not unlike Cinemaware and it's large FPP views.

I've checked the Atari ST version on youtube... the full screen side scrolling is pretty impressive for the ST with even some parallax effects thrown in. The sound though ... ugh!

It's hard to tell exactly how that cancelled Godfather platformer would've handled, but it certainly looks more responsive and reasonably paced than the one US Gold released. I also like how the German magazine you unearthed that review in was just called _Video Games._ You have to admire Teutonic matter-of-factness :p

Port all the graphics to scorpion engine maybe?.. The game always felt so wasteful of the pixelart. It does run better on faster Amiga's, but keeps a weird feel that speeds up and down randomly.
