San Pedro de Atacama: A town dedicated to the rocks that surround the tiny oasis it envelopes.
I didn't really know what to say about San Pedro until a few days after we left town. But after wading through a sea of new age hippies upon arrival this is what stuck out to me. It's a bit looser script than usual, due to the story coming on the fly. Hope you enjoy regardless!

Thanks to everyone who asked about our Patreon. I'll put out a full video when I get the time, but for those who want to jump the gun and get on board from the start, here's the link: www.patreon.com/rareearth It means a huge deal that so many have asked us to start an account. I never thought anyone would watch these videos, let alone support them.

I'm Chilean and I have followed your channel for a long time, I was so grateful when you talked about Rapa Nui, and now that you talk about San Pedro, I don't know what to say, my father was raised in the desert, and so was I (even if I lived in the coast which is easier) he taught to see the beauty of the sand and the sun, and I love San Pedro, but it worries me how the tourism is eating it away, I hope one day we could find a way where people could appreciate the people and the landscape without making it a product to be consumed. I hope you guys at least caught a glimpse of Chuquicamata or Chacabuco, those are good stories too, even thou more modern.

If I remember correctly, that same desert hosts one of the largest interferometers on earth. I'm imagining an alien species looking down at this area, seeing the complex equipment of a species (us) trying to look into the vast distances of space while right next door that same species is gathering rocks it believes are magical. We truly are an odd bunch.

Must be 14 years since my wife and i were there, the place was much smaller then. The local mafia used to control the electricity, If you didn't pay them off you didn't get access to it. Very in keeping with the general history of the place i guess, people never change. My lasting memory of San Pedro de Atacama was the night sky, so many stars. I don't know if you'll even see this, but I want to say my thanks. Your channel is one of those awesome things that I can just immerse myself in and learn something without even thinking. I think the stories you tell touch most people that see them. I'm pretty sure I've found most channels like this and added them to my „list”, but it's always great to find a new one. And since your channel isn't that old or well known, I thought I'd leave my thanks. Not many people can produce content that is interesting and educative at the same time. But the people that make it happen really inspire me:D. I hope one day I can be someone that teaches other people like this. It seems you are already doing what is only a dream to me, and I wish you the best of luck in the challenges that are to come. The content you produce is great, and it's only a matter of time untill more people watch your videos!

Because they're very, VERY good at exposing the inhumanity of man, Micha B. Many, many people don't know the abuses that our country visited upon the First Nations, only hearing rumours and second or even third hand information. The reconciliation between the Canadian Government and the First Nations is a major point of contention, as the average Canadian basically just sees it as "them Injuns whining for more money".

As a Canadian this is an important topic for me that I'd love to see Evan cover someday. I had been taught that residential schools were bad, but I've never really been aware of how devastating it was to the history and culture of the native people of Canada until these last few years.

Another very thoughtful piece. I honestly couldn't tell that the script was looser than usual (take from that what you will!). It's sad to think how often this place has been re-invented by the various "invasions" (including the New-Age tourism) but there are places all over the planet that have suffered the same fate. I imagine the people living in San Pedro de Atacama would point out that in every circumstance--the arrival of the Incas, the Spaniards, the New-Agers, the most important thing was to adapt and survive. Living in a desert oasis like this is hard enough. Adaptation (which is ultimately the only way our species survives) is at the sharp end when you're dependent on the tricky ecology of an oasis. If, as you say, the New-Age tourism has expanded the town twofold and will do so again in the future, I suspect they will eventually overwhelm the ecology of the area and the desert will reclaim it. Rocks will ultimately triumph over man. The sad thing is, this will probably come as a surprise because now, more than ever, the human race seems to think it has (or should have) control over everything.

I think the sand on the camera sensor actually adds to the presentation rather than being a "flaw". :) Thank you so much for the work that you guys do. It's so positive and uplifting. Hopeful. Hope instilling, is maybe a better word. As someone who is disabled, with many medical issues and living alone* it really helps get me through the day. Take care and I can't wait to see the next bit of rarity that you uncover from the depths of the Earth. A rock records the story of its formation -- the heat and pressures involved, when and where this happened, what else was going on nearby, how this fits into the geological history of the Earth. A rock is all about realty. Ascribing 'magic' to a rock defies that reality.
@verdatum
@verdatum 6 лет назад
This reminds me of when my family visited Sedona. I was raised skeptical, so it was sort of a trip we made because we like good geology, and just as a spectator. That sort of "new age hippie" thing is so baffling to me. But at the same time, the "activist hippie" has the potential to be a force for a lot of genuine good. And at the same time again, sometimes other activist hippie types manage to cause change that is well intentioned, but woefully uninformed, and ultimately, objectively harmful to the very system they are attempting to protect. But in so many eyes, the ignorant, the harmful, and the beneficial all get grouped together and caricatured to the point that they are completely dehumanized.

First, let me thank you for this incredible body of work. I really enjoy it. Now on to what made me open my browser (I watch on roku) to comment. Quartz is not believed to contain energy. Well not by those well trained. Rather, it is a form of lens for the energy of the body. The electromagnetic energy some of us believe extends beyond our nervous system and radiates out and can be directed, shaped, and used as a tool. To what extent is always the question, and what do you call this magic is another, and can you prove it is the biggest. However, as to the place of quartz in this process, it's a focusing tool, or even a battery. The clearer the quartz crystal, the sharper the focus, and ones with a lot of occlusions are thought of as capacitor style, soaking in the energy to hold it then release it in either a burst or a slow seep. If you ever want to do a show on this, that'd be pretty fascinating and also to learn what other "new age religion" people think too. You could tour the rock fields and interview the collectors.
