Something amazing has happened: Berlin's new airport, under construction since 2006, is finally going to open!
At least, we hope so.

That's a misunderstanding -like for the Autobahn or the Railway. It's economical to have an airport for the economy of the area. It's impossible to make profit with the airport by itself. This is why no private owners are going to invest, cause the profit comes via income tax and VAT and so on.

The only reason they open now is that no-one is flying anymore. The perfect time for "opening" a dysfunctional airport.

During operational trial runs, there was a false alarm (someone was smoking in a janitor's closet) and in the airport CEO's own (translated) words, "everything that was supposed to happen did." The systems worked!

I’m very impressed by the attention to detail at the end of the video. The German part uses 7,1 Mrd € (decimal comma, Milliards instead of short scale Billions, euro symbol *after* the value), while the English part uses € 7.1 bn (euro symbol before the value - I still hate to see this in general - decimal full stop and short scale Billions instead of Milliards - 1/1000th of a long scale Billion). Great attention to detail for something that is only on the end card for a few seconds.

I don't believe it yet. There will be some issues. Fire, water, the thickness of the concrete layers, the safety of the roofs, the width of the sewers, general security issues, electronic failures. Just something... But in October 2022 the airport will finally open. Promised.

As I understand it, planning went a bit like this (as seen from the Berlin government): 1. "Hey, companies, what does an airport cost, completely built by you?" 2. "That much? We can do that cheaper!" 3. "Hey, we need some changes" 4. "This is getting expensive, let's change plans to make it cheaper" 5. "Strange, changing the plans when parts have already been constructed (that now have to be demolished) made it more expensive, not cheaper!" (and then the fire safety check came)

I first visited Berlin in 2007 and went to see Tempelhof Airport as it was a legendary piece of architecture - it was fabulous to see though it was scheduled for closure and running a very low key service - like a rural backward city airport like Paderborn or Kassel.

BER in 2016: Just some more time. BER in 2018: More time please. BER in 2019: This airport will be already to small when it eventually opens. BER in 2020: Opens, but nobody needs it now. Nobody flies during a global pandemic. Now the airport is too big. Well, at least they will finish that thing already.

A few thoughts come to my mind: 1. We already have an airport that works at Schönefeld/SFX, because it already used the runways, and while the terminal buildings and so on all look a bit improvised/temporary, it worked fine so far. 2. They probably wanted to spare themselves the embarrassment of Tesla finishing a whole Mega (or Giga?) factory for electric vehicles in the vicinity, which has only been announced in late 2019 and is supposed to open in 2021, before their airport is open. 3. They may have figured, during the Corona lockdown there aren't many passengers anyways, since most flights are cancelled, and therefore nobody might notice the desolate state this brand new airport is in, if they continue to fix it while it's already operational. 4. There were rumors of the thing having to be torn down completely and rebuilt from scratch, who knows, maybe that's still an option, perhaps once a building collapses in on itself, trapping hundreds of travellers in rubble (oh, right, only tens of travellers - after all, we're still on Corona lockdown).

they need to open while most planes don't fly ... already a few years ago, Tegel ran so much above its normal capacity that it surpassed the planned higher capacity of BER. thus they would have to build a new and bigger airport, but decided to first try and train what to do wrong with the airport they already had started to build. maybe thanks to the virus and other problems of air companies, the volume of traffic will meet the capacity again "wenn" they open, or they will open "wenn" the volume of traffic meets the capacity again. (sorry, Berliner myself, i couldn't translate "wenn" since depending on context and your opinion that word can mean "when" as well as "if") ps: i also doubt a date in october for another reason ... in contrast to Tempelhof and Tegel which both are "in town" between houses, BER is outside city limits where probability of fog in fall is even higher, and as soon as BER opens, Tegel automatically shuts down, which leaves only a single(!) airport for the town and the entire region, with the next airport in case of emergencies on the BER runways, or for emergency landings or detours (for most big planes) probably being 100++ kilometers distant, eg Leipzig ... which other european capital can offer this sense of adventure ?

You forgot to mention that during the period of repair work, various construction/fire protection regulations were changed - which is why individual, already completed components were no longer acceptable. Allegedly, one of the relatively early faults is said to have happened in the parking lot. Some of the trees, which were planted according to a given pattern, had to be moved because ... the company carrying out the work was holding the plan upside down. I have no clue if this is true, but if not it is at least a nice story.

please add STUTTGART 21 railway and railway station and airport project ... how to to replace a T shaped railwaystation at the end of an valley by a normal shape railway ... the next infrastructure project ordered for cheap, then abused by politicians to add features they were aware of from the beginning but did not wanna tell the public cause then the project would have been out of budget from the beginnning and would not have gotten a vote to go. the witchceaft word is called "Nachtragshaushalt" ... It starts always as we need a new airport 2 major buildings and 2 runways just to calm the public and to get offers or biddings that will meet the amount the public or state wants to pay at max. That is the bases budget and if you do not pull your magnum there and put it on the table to ask "Berlin had 3 airports with 5 or 6 runways and now you wanna build a brand new one and 2 runways are really enough how can this ever work? Didn't we have 5 Terminals before and 6 runaways and didn't you tell a 100% growth rate within 10 years ... ? How could that 2 new ones handle the twice amount of passengers on 2 runways and 2 terminals ? Wait a minute, you have already a plan b and plan c to add another 2 runaways and 2 terminals and then the next 2 of them right ?" And this will be trigger on the magnum cause the supplier with the cheapest bidding knows for sure: in the aftermath they will add 2 the volume of contracts and that by getting Nachtragshaushalt and that will not be determined or limited by competition but with the prices we will call for each tiny piece they want to get afterwards. That is the way the project went and one contractor was the "planing buereau" and that itself wanted more money too for the additional work for things politicians added afterwards ... and then the politicians pulled the trigger and said: No way, you are too expensive.. You are fired!. And at that point the project had become headless ... without any plans nor knowledge cause the masterminds were fired and took everything and eyery piece they could with them without answering anything the did not get paid for - additionaly for sure. NACHTRAGS HAUSHALT is the wizzards withchcraft word that lets you build any gigantic building like Adolf Hitler and even bigger ... Oh, you might think that is over the top ? Check a deepwater harbour germany has build in the German Kriegsmarine Harbour that was founded by the last Kaiser to become the bases of that fleet to defeat Britain: WILHELM-SHAFEN or Williamsharbour ... There you can find a brand new deepwater container harbor for ships with 20000 and more container ... cause Hamburg is a harbour on a river and depending on tide and so on when ships can enter the river to reach Hamburg Container Terminal .... When they had opened this deepsea conteainer harbor there in Wilhelmshaven around 2010 or so they had how many ships arriving per week ? 0 and they had no rrailways to transport the containers into germany and middle and eastern europe .... So they "hired" 1 ship to visiti the harbor every now and then ... to get traffic ... worst of all: Hamburg did never recover from the 2009 crisis and is far behind Rotterdam which is earlier on the route of the ships from Chrina... and that has grown fastern than both german harbours ... Why did I mention that ? the new airport might open as the new container harbor 2010 with that 0 containerships arriving and 0 passengers planes coming cause international tourism is pretty dead now and will be dead for dam long time for sure cause the only protection against a new infection rate from abroad would need a quarantine each time someone arrives and comes back and nothing else will work that way if you need saftey. You won t be able to put all germans in another lockdown after a 2nd wave coming from abroad like that first wave ffrom ISCHGL Austria where they held the ski ressorts open to make business after infections and warnings . The harbor is dead and fighting to survive as the hamburg harbor and the new airport will open the gate in a similiar bad situation .. but check the huge harbor in Wilhelmshaven on the nnorthern perimeter out via satellite and zoom in how tall that is which is completely arteficial build. There was nothing ... and now there will be nothing at all if you compare the size of ships and amount of containers arriving and shipped .... in the long run all might be dead if a bit smaller containerchips will go the direct way through suez canal too greece where china had bought a harbour or to Italy and from there through italy or balkan by railway to central and eastern europe like austria suisse and germany cause that link will be a lot faster compared to the far longer journey around cap good hope ... If they reach southafrica the other ships will have arrived in italy I guess. ... not better than Hitlers planings ... like a huge canal in eastern prussia - a lost place and all the other buildings ...
